3 charged in Muhammad cartoonist murder plot

STOCKHOLM -- A Swedish prosecutor on Tuesday charged three men with plotting to murder an artist who depicted the Prophet Muhammad as a dog.

The men, aged 23 to 26 and of Somali and Iraqi origin, were arrested in the city of Goteborg on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

According to the charges filed Tuesday, the men planned to stab to death artist Lars Vilks, who has faced numerous death threats over his drawing of Muhammad in 2007.

An art gallery was evacuated in connection with the arrests, and police originally treated the case as a terror investigation. They later relabeled it as a murder plot.

Good. I hope they spend a lot of time in jail. I hope the inmates take a dim view to these vermin too.

These Religeon-of Peace folks sure are mean.........but....they are just doing what their "good book" is telling them to do. Fact is, Brothers and sisters, zizzlam is at war with America and the rest of the world and our leaders had better take their heads out of their dark smelly places or we will lose all of our freedoms and become their slaves. Think not ? Already they don't have to pay a penny for zobamas health plan....not a penny. How much are you paying ???

Why don't you give us some facts to back up your racist claims? Islam is a religion of peace. When zealots of any religion, twist (or interpret) the words of their religion to fit with their twisted views, this is what happens. Look at the idiots of Westboro Baptist Church. Do they get free "zobama health plan" too? Every first world country except America, has universal health care. Also, we have implemented it in almost every country that "we" (US) has invaded. It would be great to stop invading and destroying other countries and implement universal health care at home, where it is sorely needed. People before profits!

Yes I agree that the Westboro Church is coocoo. But you need to understand one thing. Universal Health Care is NOT a good thing. When they are paying 60-70% tax in order to have it. Sorry but this is a FACT also to let you know a friend had a heart attack while we were on vacation in Rome. He was put in a ward where there were 16 beds and one nurse...We had to go get water for him. Also he was never seen by a Dr. So we had him transferred to the Vatican Hospital (non-government facility) where he had good care. Need I say more about UNIVERSAL HEALTH (not so good) CARE?

Nita, your take on Universal Health Care is foolish and uninformed. No one, anywhere, is taxed at anything close to 70%, read up before you spout your nonsense. No one ever said Health Care is free, what planet are you from anyway? What we know for certain is that citizens of nations with health care for all, (a very democratic principle), live longer, healthier lives than we do. Infant mortality is lower. And they spend far less on health care as a % of GDP than we do. Get your facts straight, your ignorance feeds the same vacuous fear mongering the GOP is infamous for.

Art - your artistry of creating hate is exemplary. You need to catapulted to Kepler-22. Don't blame the unseen God (let us know when you've seen yours). Blame the priests, mullahs, rabbis and the rest of mankind for inability to play with fire. Show me one religion (psychological trance) that has not experienced violence - hate to say Christianity being at the top. But who's counting. The sooner the 'Art's of thos earth are transported to Kepler-22, the sooner we can all live in peace.

Look at the headlines of the day from the Middle East. In Iraq you see Muslims slaughtering other Muslims simply because they practice their faith slightly differently.

These crazies consider them not to be true Muslims which apparently makes them fair game for any atrocity. Anyone that thinks the cult of the moon god isn't violent and barbaric is deluding themselves, and their followers are coming for us eventually, which is just as soon as their population in this country is great enough. Don't think so? Just look at France.

Yeah MD - It is sure a religion of peace, and its obvious no? As for being racist, FYI- Islam is not a religion it is an alleged Religion/Cult. And there is nothing peaceful about it, yes there are nuts on each side of the religious fence but really are you going to compare a couple of dozen idiots form the baptist church to the Millions and Millions that follow Islam? Or let me guess you are going to bring up the crusades that occurred 1,000 years ago and compare it to Christianity as well right?

No other religion breeds the violence, hatred, abuse, and complete and total lack of tolerance that Islam does, the sooner you get your head out of the sand the better. If it is a peaceful religion then explain the European crisis and the immigration of these folks into some of the most tolerant and open countries in the world, and are there simply not to blend in, but to ruin the countries and have them see the light of this faux cult. Sweden and Norway to pick 2 of the bunch, nto to mention, Germany, Russia, Greece, France, Spain, and every other country there. I know of no other religion that teaches violence and murder as a way to progress their agenda PERIOD. Islam is evil and is truly the new wave of the Nazism in the world, and if you do not agree with their view you will be killed. Has anyone see any murders due to the defamation of a picture of Christ, BUddah? Anyone?

Sweden, Malmo, Spain, France, UK- all have areas that are simply no go zones and if you are not Muslim you are not welcomed period. The cops wont go in the fire department will not go in, once they have enough of the population in control they take over, plain and simple and Europe is way ahead of us in this matter. This is why Europe is passing all these laws and being much less sympathetic to this call for civility among these animals. Whether they came here legally or illegally is not the point. The Ellis Island immigrants got their share of prejudice when they got here, putting up with the "wop" or "dago" insults and seeing "Irish need not apply" signs everywhere.

                #7.6 - Tue Dec 6, 2011 11:27 AM EST

Jim, I disagree in your assessment, because times change and the case happens to be that Italian, Irish and German immigrants in the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries came to America by legitimate means with proper documentation. They took pride in their new home by adhering to the laws and customs of the times. There was discrimination, sure, and there were criminals in the bunch, absolutely, but the majority of immigrants from this time period were hard-working, honest people.

I do have room to admit that perhaps history has looked especially kindly on these people in these times, but on the whole, immigration in the United States is very different than it once was.

What concerns many Americans today is the large number of illegal immigrants crossing the Southern border who do not adhere to the language, customs, or laws of the land, benefitting from social welfare programs paid for by citizens while contributing nothing to the system. To many, this constitutes an invasion.

All the more reason why I'm agnostic. Those with extreme thoughts--including YOU--will always find a reason to slaughter those who disagree with them, and the hyperbole of your statements is typical. Soooooo typical. And the difference between your earlier statements about radical Christianity (or extremists of any other religion besides Islam) is too obvious to need rebuttal. Name the last time a Christian/Jew/Buddhist/Hindu/Shintoist/Wiccan/etc. suicide bomber blew him/herself up in the middle of a group of women and children for no purpose other than to butcher those whose only sin was not believing exactly the same as the bomber. Your arguments lack logic, rationality and any basis in fact. The parallel excesses of radical Christianity stopped centuries ago--what's happening in radical Islam is going on TODAY.

well, don't we also rationalize murders we commit in Afghanistan and Iraq in the name of democracy and freedom? don't we say it's ok for the sake of greater good? is that an insult to democracy and freedom? you just need to see things from all angles. what you think is justifiable is not justifiable to everyone. same goes for them, what they justify may not be what you justify. insulting someone's religion is pretty bad idea. how would you feel if someone draws your father or a mother as a dog? it hurts doesn't it. I think that bad people get what they deserve, like the artist got a life full of fear and these 3 will go to jail. if you don't insult people you have nothing to worry about.

Florida84.. so lets see if I have this right. Freedom of expression stops where it becomes insulting? Expression should be limited only to those words that don't offend others? If one exercises that right, and it offends you, you have the right..no the duty... to threaten them with bodily harm and death? And in Florida, that's considered just and right.

I'm unsurprised at your stunted thinking. It seems to be prevelant in the south.

Here's a thought... phuck your mother, Muhammed, and phuck jesus, infact..let them phuck eachother. Hurt's does it? Awww...
Now.. what? Fatwa? Jihad? Crusade? Inquisition?

                        @ bart

your last sentence just proved how immature you are. However, we do have numerous restrictions on expression, remember the "hate speech"? anti-defamation? all over europe there are many restrictions, such as wearing religious symbols, drawing swastikas, etc. if I am walking down the streat insulting people's beliefs I would expect to be punched or even killed. should I blame others for that? or blame myself for being such a stupid person?

                          #13.6 - Tue Dec 6, 2011 9:45 AM EST

florida--yes, and our "restrictions" on hate speech and defamation call for legal action; those committing such offenses are charged in a court of law, face prosection and if convicted are punished with fines or jail terms. What DOESN'T happen is private citizens being given the right to hunt them down and murder them. Big difference. HUGE. In fact, if that does happen, the perpetrators are then prosecuted for a much worse crime, just as these idiots are going to be. What part of this don't you get? Muslims no more have the right to ignore civil/criminal law and commit crimes--especially capital crimes--in the name of their "religion" than you or I do. And if you're walking down the street insulting other peoples' beliefs you expect to be...killed??? Speaks volumes about your personal beliefs. How wonderfully tolerant of you.

Your logic is the same as when after 9-11 some leaders had the balls to say..."we had that coming". SAVE IT!

                          Florida,

I guess we should get rid of South Park, they make fun of Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Catholics, etc. As I recall, they were going to make a show about Islam, but decided not to because they would have to "draw" mohammed. A radio show that I listen to makes fun of Christian religions (while the host is also a Christian). Also, SNL, Late Night (like Leno, Letterman, etc.) should be banned as well. I'm sure that there are people on those shows that have made fun of many people, including the muslim religion.

You are completely off base. I believe that humor is one of the best tools in overcoming religious/political differences that divide so many of us.

The guys that committed murder are the only ones that actually committed a crime. We don't know exactly what the intentions were of the guy that drew the prophet mohammed, but we know what the murderers intentions were.

What's the difference between defamation and drawing someone's prophet as a dog? isn't that defamation as well? in england, you are not allowed to insult anglican church (state church for that matter) publically, but you can insult any other religion. is that equality? in norway and denmark, king has to be a lutheran!!! and the state religion is lutheranism!!!! how the hell is this different from iran? where is equality in all these countries? humor is a one thing but drawing someone's prophet as a dog is too much and very bad taste. I cannot justify or comprehend what this "artist" tried to do.

                            #13.10 - Tue Dec 6, 2011 12:16 PM EST

I agree that it was in poor taste, but isn't it in poor taste to make fun of a christian religion as well? Or is that allowed? As for the whole state religion, sure Norway and Denmark may have a state religion, but they allow other religions to practice there freely. They don't murder Catholics there. Muslims are allowed to worship there.

The same could be said for most of the latin american countries. Their religion is Catholic, yet people are free to decide for themselves without peril of losing their lives to the state. Iran is Muslim and you are free to worship how you choose, but you risk losing your life for what you believe in. Just look at the coptic Christians in Egypt. They were killed.

Hey, Ragheads. Your "prophet" (little p intentional) was a pedophile. Depicting him as a dog is an insult.....to dogs everywhere. There is no tolerance in islam (little i), just as there was none with the Borg (Star Trek TNG), "assimilate or die". We took on Saddam and the Taliban, and then stayed around to avoid civil wars breaking out. Why? Leave and let all the animals kill each other.

The difference is I didn't claim to be tolerant of these animals. But they constantly preach the lie of tolerance in islam. The fact is I own a business that employs 70 people. And NOT ONE is muslim or middle eastern. Coincidence? Sure. And by the way, being that the business is in Florida, I am happy that florida84 doesn't work for me either.

Which begs the question, where did you serve? And by "serve" we don't count super sizing the order at your drive thru window. You wouldn't have the guts to live in an environment where you have to "man-up" every single day. Now run along home. You don't have the intellect or the courage to play at the big boys table.

trex, are you, seriously, bragging about serving in Vietnan? How sad. You participated in the slaughter of 2 million innocent Vietnam citizens, a nation that never raised a finger against us. Yet we invaded based upon the proven PHONY Tonkin Gulf Incident, an event that never happened, and went on to do our best to destroy a 3rd world nation. Seriously, are you proud of what we did to the Vietnamese? If so, you're no better than the murdering psychotic fringe muslim fanatics. How many Vietnamese women, children, grandparents, etc., etc. were incinerated with Napalm? Too many to count. Guess when the US slaughters civilians, it's OK with you. I am ashamed of what we did to that nation, and if that makes me a pansy, I am proud to be called that by the likes of you. You served, allright, served a heaping portion of misery on an innocent people.

Be VERY thankful for the anonymity afforded you on this forum. Malign the veterans of this country who served proudly so that cowards like you could hide in the shadows, and you will find your direst expectations fulfilled tenfold. Think of the embarrassment of suffering a whoopin' from a 62 year old man. That alone would require you to spend years in therapy just to get over it. You are an insignificant pusillanimous little pissant. Now run on home to your mommy.
