Egyptian pyramids drawn into Islamist debate

CAIRO -- Around 1,000 Egyptians rallied near the ancient pyramids on Friday to protest against what they said were threats by Islamic radicals to undermine tourism, one of the country's biggest money earners, Reuters reports.

Islamist groups look set to dominate the next parliament, with the once-banned Muslim Brotherhood seeing its party win 37 percent of the vote in a first phase of balloting and the much more puritanical Salafis securing a surprise 24 percent.

The Muslim Brotherhood will use the Saudi model of tourism: only Muslims need apply for tourist visas. I don't mind a bit. I never had any interest in visiting this flea-infested (leftover plague from Moses) country. Now the Muslim Bros can build their jihadi spas for terrorist makeovers. They can offer manis and pedis for those who are about to lose their arms and legs as they commit their acts of violence against the infidels. This will be a special vacation package for those Muslim fanatics who wish to getaway. Egyptian tourism at its best.

Tourism is one worry, but an even bigger worry should be what will happen to the pyramids should Egypt come to be governed by Sharia law. BOOM, BOOM, bye, bye pyramids.

May the Evil Eye keep tha puritanical Salafist (offshoot of Wahhabis- both originating from Saudi Arabia) away from the Pharaos' tombs. They are real history. Culture.Heritage. Knowhow- all the seeds- Kohl make-up,poisons.mummifying techniques, gold (not the alchemists' one) writing in papyrus- the scribes. Wanting to learn- not suppress learning. What is much more dire might be the Suez Canal. Hopefully the yoke of totalitarian ultra-puritanical Salafism and the neo-backward looking Brotherhood will not prevail. The Copts are really worried- where are they going in order not to be annihiliated in the stampede of religious fanatics' unleashing their vitriol and their shock-troops (remember CBS- correspo0ndent? the Egyptian-American correspondent- both women).

Yes, "They are real history. Culture.Heritage". But the Arabs have no relation whatsoever to that heritage. It's the oppressed minority of Coptic Christians that are descendants of ancient Egyptian people. The Arabs came as occupiers. The passage of time didn't change the fact that Egypt is a country under occupation. The only land to which Arabs are indigenous population is Arabian peninsula. All the land beyond that is occupied territory, including Iraq, Syria, Israel, Lebanon, and all of North Africa.

Let them vote off the scale to the right.

    Let them destroy everything.

Let them demolish their economy. These people are off the chain crazy with their misquoted "religion"

They will blame the result on the West. Religious zealots who are misquoting ancient texts to justify their actions, are all over the world. The basic tenet of all religions is simple. BE NICE!

Now.....If we vote to the extreme right in the USA, over misquoted religion, who are WE going to blame?

The young liberal facebook generation saw the bad economy and protested. They removed the strongman Mubarak and now they have the highly organized, Islamist Muslim Brotherhood. Great job boys and girls. You identified the problems and with no solutions, allowed the Brotherhood to take over. Don't let immaturity get in the way of a good protest.

Seems to me these extreme Islamist groups wish time to be rolled back and for us all to be tribal barbarians. Why are they threatened by anything not to their liking? Change is inevitable, learn from it or be crushed by it.

I dont know why anyone is surprised. Everytime ,in the past and present, that Muslims are allowed to vote, they vote for the Radical groups. The Palistenians did it, the Turks did it, so did Egypt. The Muslim people want to live by Sharia law and they want to force it on all of their citizens. They wish to force it on YOU AND ME,one of these days.

However- if the fields are covered by thorns, flowers are not blooming and the spiders are flourishing.

The rally was attended by the new minister of tourism (Christian). Do not equate The Brotherhood with The Salafi. The craziest of them just lost the run off in Alexandria. Also, during the Mubarak years, the Salafi were the ONLY ones supplying medical care and food assistance to the rural poor. The poor only saw the Salafi. Who did they vote for? The people they knew. Now people are really paying attention to what these guys are saying (funded and supported by Saudi Arabia, our big friends). Anyone who has been to Luxor or Aswan knows the puritanical aspects of Salafi teachings will not go down well with the people any more than it will go down with the tourists.

This is a revolution. Do not expect all to be resolved in a day or week or year. Also, few things here (I am in Alexandria) are seldom what they appear to be, and anyone who says he KNOWS what will happen is an idiot. I have in the past few days spoken to many Christians who are feeling stronger and more secure. They are not marginalized. Christians control about 45% of Egypt's economy and now control the area of Tahir Square. The Sufi (Muslims) are hated by the Salafi more than the Christians because they are Muslims who do not agree in any way with the dogma of the Salafi. Most of Egypt enjoys a strong Sufi heritage. The Sufi are working with the Christians.
