Pakistan says U.S. drones in its air space will be shot down

Updated at 8 p.m. EST

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan will shoot down any U.S. drone that intrudes its air space per new directives, a senior Pakistani official told NBC News on Saturday.

Pakistani security personnel examine a crashed US surveillance drone inside Pakistan in August.

According to the new Pakistani defense policy, "Any object entering into our air space, including U.S. drones, will be treated as hostile and be shot down," a senior Pakistani military official told NBC News.

The policy change comes just weeks after a deadly NATO attack on Pakistani military checkpoints accidentally killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, prompting Pakistani officials to order all U.S. personnel out of a remote airfield in Pakistan.

Pakistan told the U.S. to vacate Shamsi Air Base by December 11.

A senior military official from Quetta, Pakistan, confirmed to NBC News on Saturday that the evacuation of the base, used for staging classified drone flights directed against militants, “will be completed tomorrow,” according to NBC’s Fakhar ur Rehman.

Pakistan's Frontier Corps security forces took control of the base Saturday evening after most U.S. military personnel left, Xinhua news agency reported. Civil aviation officials also moved in Saturday, Xinhua said.

Pakistani Military Chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani had issued multiple directives since the Nov. 26 NATO attack, which included orders to shoot down U.S. drones, senior military officials confirmed to NBC News on Saturday.

It was unclear Saturday whether orders to fire upon incoming U.S. drones was part of the initial orders.

Supporters of opposition political party Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (Movement of Justice) carry a mock US drone as they listen to a speech by the party founder Imran Khan, during a protest rally against the United States drones attacks.

The Pakistani airbase had been used by U.S. forces, including the CIA, to stage elements of a clandestine U.S. counter-terrorism operation to attack militants linked to al-Qaida, the Taliban and Pakistan's home-grown Haqqani network, using unmanned drone aircraft armed with missiles.

President Barack Obama stepped up the drone campaign after he took office. U.S. officials say it has produced major successes in decimating the central leadership of al-Qaida and putting associated militant groups on the defensive.

Since 2004, U.S. drones have carried out more than 300 attacks inside Pakistan.

Pakistani authorities started threatening U.S. personnel with eviction from the Shamsi base in the wake of the raid last May in which U.S. commandos killed Osama bin Laden at his hide-out near Islamabad without notifying Pakistani officials in advance.

NBC News' Fakhar ur Rehman, msnbc.com's Sevil Omer and Reuters contributed to this report.

I think Iran actually electronically took over the US drone. Stealth or not, I think it can be shot down if there is more effort.

louis magoois

That may be the invitation to obtain some of that stuff Iran claims to have. Or... a notification that they are ready to go to war over these intrusions. Or....maybe both.

Yup...another war is just what we need for Christmas. Maybe it would take some of the pressure off Iran.

We should handle our foreign affairs like Dennis Hoopers' character in "Blue Velvet". He used the line to threaten Jeffery the neighbor "if I send you a love letter you're fu-ked forever"!! We should be sending the same message to Pakistan IMO.

Take the money that we send them as foreign aid and give it to the troops that did tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our troops live at the poverty line while we pay the Paks. to do what?

Our government has shown little common sense since Korea so why should it start now?

crisp: And exactly what was "barry" supposed to do about it? Mount a raid into Iran to retrieve a drone? Hardly practical or advisable, don't you think? Or are you just out for a little POTUS bashing today?

It's actually quite hard to shoot down a drone, because they fly high and slow. Too high for IR manpads and too slow to be easily picked up on radar. Not that it can't be done, but it's not easy. I'm inclined to think that drone in Iran crashed due to a malfunction; I doubt Iran even knew it was there until someone found it.

Nothing is invincible or invisible.

Two craft down so far, and perhaps even more?

The heat signature alone gives away the craft using simple image intensifiers or IR scopes.

You cant hide heat you can only mask it somewhat.

If Pakistan flew a drone over USA protected air space I suspect there wouldn't even be a warning, it would be shot down. We give money to Pakistan so that gives us a right to fly drones over their protected air space? That is just plain arrogance.

Two things, one, the American government should stop giving them our money, and two, we shouldn't be over there in the first place. Let them all rot in hell where they belong. If they didn't get all the billions in American aide, they would not be able to function and build weapons to attack us or their neighbors.

That's how I feel. Pakistan has always played both sides. So we shouldn't beel any guilt about pulling all financial aid to them. Of course we did it because it was in our best interests to do so but I think the time is here to cut off all aid to them, and to Egypt, and to Israel, etc. Let's get out of that crazy part of the world and focus on the U.S.A. I'm so sick of going out to buy things and everything is made in China. The bad part is there are other other companies that make the same product but they're also made in China so often times you can't even find a U.S. made option. We need to do something about that.

A lot of the drones aren't up in the stratosphere.

The little plane in the photo cant carry bulky large telephoto glass for the camera, nor can the hell fire missile be shot from the heavens, so at some time almost all have to come to earth except the big platforms in spy mode only.

I'm not talking stratosphere. IR SAMs really don't go very high. The new ones could reach a cruising drone, but I don't think Iran has the new ones.

No, when it comes to Pakistan its not about oil, that's the way Israel wants it, Israel needs a 'monster' in the region to get all the funds and aid it can from us gullible Americans!

Israel is planning to get US to wage war against Iran (since they don't have the balls themselves!) due to Iran's proximity to Israel (Iran's recent development of missiles reaching Israel). Exactly how they got us to attack Iraq (due to its proximity with Israel). Pakistan is the next 'threat' to US after Iran.

We're falling for it each time! for the past four decades we've been playing into the hands of Israel, what have we got from it? nothing but billions of dollars spent and our lives for Israel! We've and we're being used! They own our corps, banks, media and even Hollywood, and they own our souls! They've made us to become superficial thinkers and shallow in nature, they're sitting back and laughing at us, calling us rednecks!

We in the US are never going to learn who our true allies are, and who is not. Iran,
Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Suide Arabia, Syria and so forth are not our
friends. We need to do whatever it takes to get away from importing OIL, and
use all the money that goes into Wars to find alternatives, or OIL that is in
our areas. As far as drones are concerned why not have self destruct procedures
in the cases where a drone gets hijacked or shot down.

Maximiliuss, what shred of credibility your position may have had went out the window with this:

Israel is planning to get US to wage war against Iran (since they don't have the balls themselves!)

Get real. That's the one thing they do have and it goes with a bad case of sheer audacity. The kind that might make them justify using nuclear weapons on a neighbor to prevent them from having nuclear weapons they might use on someone. Yeah it's incredibly irrational, but no more than seeking a solution of armageddon to win the argument between two 5 year olds that your imaginary friend is better than someone else's imaginary friend.

They fly around 30 miles max.

Drones except those flying higher are Susceptible.

Most drones only fly a mile above the looking area so all of those are dead with a 50 cal, let alone a sam.

IR vs Radar is only a guiding package and sams go way back to Nam.

I can't believe there are fourteen pages of very little common sense intelligence in response to some stupid report by MSNBC over some Pakistani shooting down a piddly assed toy plane? This isn't the same deal as Iran shooting down a multi-millon dollar stealth drone over their air space.

Some friggin farmer probably caught this sucker crashed in his poppy field and claimed he shot it down.

Its a hand/ground launched infantry mobile type reconnaissance drone, not a major loss to us. There are so many teenagers that got an RC plane from Dad for this Christmas, we could probably start a campaign and have all the RC enthusiasts meet in Afghanistan on the New Year and start a major assault, for the way that Pakistan is making a big stink out of this.

All this is their stupid idiotic way of rallying a stupid idiotic public into frenzied obedience and turn their attention away from the fact that their government has been accepting US aid and billions in bribe money and pocketing the money rather than using it to help oust Taliban or Alqeada forces or even giving aid to their own people.

The fact of the matter is that we as an American people are ignorant and weak. Our nation would have been a lot better off hiring professional mercenaries to go in and live beside these camel jockey Jihadist, and knocking them of a half dozen at a time with our own IEDs and scaring the living hell out of them as they realized we could hit them as they prayed to Allah or ate a fattened calf.

We can't ever help these people, the only thing we can do is play the game and hope to leave Afghanistan and Iraq in some form of a compatible Allied position for later. By later I mean, this ain't over by far yet. When all hell busts lose over in the East, we don't want to burn the bridges we have already spent hundreds of billions building along the way.

It is time for President Obama to now take a strong standpoint on the matter, and I am sure he soon will. First lets get our men and women out of Iraq, saving the US untold billions a year on that war. Then work towards pulling out of Afghanistan, and as soon as we do, consider what we need to do to secure relations with other nations after having been at war now for a decade, better than that in Afg land.

Then simply start a renewed reward program for every convoy or Taliban turned in at an Afghanistan check point. With that, we will bomb the adjacent Pakistan checkpoint that let them through. Retaliation in response to failed diplomacy has always worked before, why not now?

        Exactly! Morons on this board are so far from reality it is laughable. Few points they refuse to comprehend;

        1. They think $1.5 billion runs a country of 170 million people and GDP of $534 billion.

        2. The 6th largest military who has fought wars with enemy 6 times bigger and with nuclear power, advance delivery systems can be pushed around.

        3. Pakistan air force, arguably one of top 5 air forces can't defend its air space. Just look at PAF record against the "great" Israeli air force during Arab Israeli wars.

        4. US safely exiting from stupid war they started without land locked Afghanistan.

        5. If Iran can take control of this "advance" Drone and bring it down safely, what does it say about it's "stealthiness". LOL!

The fact is US has never won a war since world war 2 because they have started unjust wars. The world war was just and they won that. When nations are on path of destruction they often don't realize it until it is too late. USSR is an example how unjust wars destroy countries and super powers.

And on the point of the US firing on their guard outpost, folks...we have lost far more troops under friendly fire than these cowards will ever lose in a war. Their guards openly take bribes to let contriband cargo pass their checkpoints, their own guards have fired on and killed US troops before and are known to work in compliance with Taliban forces. If they lose a few troops everyonce in a while, its the tides of war, the poor bastards.

And as for the camel jockey commentors who posted something about the US paying their taxes (financial aid) to Pakistan and be happy with it? You low life yellow belly suckers can't fight for freer government by yourselves, you have to have us do it for you in bribes, you have to have someone else try to buy your own way in to a true democracy and fight corruption for you. We throw Senators in jail for fourteen years here in the US, while you sheepsters complacently hide your corrupt officials under a guise of some false fraudulent respect and honor of a Pakistani people. For the posters who seem to always bring up oil when talking about the Middle East:

This country does NOT depend on a single drop of oil from the Middle East, Africa, Venezuela, or anywhere else outside of North American. The United States, Canada and Mexico together produce over 120% of all the oil that the three countries combined consume. This is assured for at least the next 50-60 years and with new production methods for oil sands and oil shale, most probably for over 100 years at our current growth in energy usage. And that is just proven reserves and does not consider any new findings.

And as if something were needed to make it even more irrelevant, the US holds the largest natural gas deposits in the world --- about equal to all known reserves from all other countries combined. That's what all the fracking thing is all about. When you look at it from an objective BTU-based view. The US has about the oil and natural gas reserves of all the rest of the world combined.

This means that the US does not need a single drop of oil from anywhere other than its own domestic production, and that of Canada and Mexico.

We do import some oil from Chavez's Venezuela that would probably continue. This is because the Venezuelan government owns Citgo and its non-franchise gas stations and refineries in the US. It would be difficult if not impossible to craft any sort of oil embargo that would not destroy a significant part of oil refining and retail gasoline sales in this country because of Citgo.

The reason we import oil from Africa and the Middle East is purely and simply screwing the American consumer in the name of huge greedy profits. The cost of oil production in the US is about $18 a barrel or so, from Mexico $22, and from Canada $60 headed down towards $45-50. Most of the oil from the US is the sweetest lightest crude requiring about 1.2-1.4 barrels of Saudi or Nigerian oil to equal one barrel from Texas. The US actually exports over 30% of all the oil it produces. By selling American crude and petroleum products to other countries, primarily Japan, at international market prices --- hanging around $100 a barrel --- the oil companies are playing a massive hugely profitable shell game that gouges the American taxpayer.

Here's how it works. An oil company produces a barrel of Texas oil for $18. They sell that barrel to Japan for $106. Then they import 1.2 barrels of oil from say, Saudi Arabia, to replace it, paying about $100 a barrel. (The discrepancy is because US oil is higher grade than Saudi oil.) Then they base the price of gasoline at the retail pump on the $106 price. It works out to be about a 24% profit on the Saudi Crude, but a profit of over 624% for the US crude. If the oil companies based prices on just the cost of production of domestic+Canadian+Mexican oil, gasoline would be around $.62 a gallon at the pump plus taxes. So the re4asson you are paying nearly $4 at the pump is so that the oil companies can collect huge, even economy damaging profits through an international oil shell game.

If the three countries got together and formed a North American Oil Cartel, the three countries could all have gasoline for less than a dollar a gallon and still export 20-30% of total production to other countries for huge profits. The only rule would have to be that oil companies are limited to a 25% profit on sales of domestic crude and that all domestic consumption would have to be satisfied before any oil could be exported, effectively killing the shell game. Cheap energy prices at home would certainly fuel more economic growth than any tax cuts, spending cuts, or new taxes could ever provide. China would find it very difficult to compete with a country which has very cheap, almost limitless, oil and natural gas. They would be caught in the middle between even cheaper labor in countries like India and their own lack of energy resources. China has virtually no oil or natural gas and its coal reserves are not only running out quickly, but are a source of pollution that is literally killing its capital city.

But as long as we allow the oil companies to product the "Middle East oil myth" (we get more from Africa, but don't actually need either ME or African oil) and the demand is outstripping supply myth (that should be China's, Japan's and India's problem, not ours) and the ability of oil companies to move much of their huge profits out of reach of US taxes, nothing will change.

              @Roger,

What most likely happened with the RQ-170 drone that Iran has is this: They knew the drones were flying over Afghanistan, most likely because of intelligence "shared" with them by the Pakistani ISI. This intelligence would have included the operating frequencies for controlling the drones and data-linking back sensor info and pictures. It would have also included exit and egress points on the Pakistani border. Any fool could have calculated the operating altitude from just the coloration of the drone but this was probably supplied by the Paki ISI as well. This information would have been provided to the Pakistani air defense systems so that there would be no interference with radio signals and that it would not be mistaken for an Indian recon drone.

Knowing the entry point into Iran, all they would have to do is station an unsophisticated broadband mobile jamming (bagpipe) station right on the Iranian border. Since the drone was only capable of medium altitudes (less than 30,000 feet) it would have been able to be spotted visually if you knew where to look. Once the drone passed the border into Iran, the Jamming station would be between the drone and the control station in Pakistan and it would be an easy matter to jam all control signals and data links. The further inland into Iran the easier this would have been. Them it appears from the lack of damage that they just continued jamming until the drone ran out of fuel. Even out of fuel the onboard fly-by-wire systems would have continued to try to fly the drone, eventually bringing it to a relatively gentle crash landing. It appears that the Iranians were quite lucky and it may have crashed in the desert instead of hitting a mountain.

Neither the Iranians nor the Pakistani military has the radar ability to detect an RQ-170 unless it had its landing gear extended. In fact, extending the gear is how the controllers make a drone visible to air traffic controllers. At 25,000 ft it would have been difficult to hit with any IR-guided missile because of its engine location on top and baffling of the intake and exhaust. Undoubtedly it would be have also been very quiet to prevent acoustic detection.

But an RQ-170 would have had three Achilles heels: 1) the data link transmissions would have allowed ground observers to home in on the drone even if they could not read the transmissions using only simple direction finding and triangulation. 2) the control frequencies would be susceptible to being jammed, even if they used sophisticated frequency-shifting and other anti-jamming measures. You just have to get between the control station and the drone. and 3) this time of the year, the drone would most likely have left a contrail. If you see a contrail and radar shows nothing, it is either a UFO or a stealthy drone. The contrail would also give you a vector that you could exploit to determine the direction and perhaps the drone's targets.

What really really surprises me is the lack of a "dead man switch" that would have destroyed the craft after it lost both control signals and data link responses for x minutes. This is a shockingly incompetent design flaw and heads should roll over this one.

My thoughts exactly, why wasn't it exploded on impact? And, I do have to question why Pakistan continues on our welfare roles, given how plainly their government has stated their political/international affiliations? Let someone else line their pockets with cash, I'm sick of it. I think we need to tighten our belts a little anyway, and this seems like a good place to start.

As if you (Pakistan) could actually shoot one down.

Your air defenses are classified in the "look what I found" category.

Sorry Pakistan, it is what it is.

The CIA drone that malfunctioned fell into Iranian hands. The operative word being fell.

You know what's hilarious about all this? The tax payers are paying about 1000% more for those so called drones as pictured as we should be, you're looking at what will end up being the biggest source of government waste we've seen since all the fraud in the "missile defense" scam.

But here you all are, ffeding off the fog while corporate America steals your soul.

Iran had recently bought several russian mobile jamming stations shortly before the stealth drone went down. The drone in this pic could have been taken down with a shotgun, anyone looking at the pic of this one and thinking it could reach high altitude has no clue.

AG99 if you spent ANY time around drones you know the dont fly high as most are heard from the ground after they pass of course. The picture shown above is an R/C aircraft NOT a drone. And as a FT for the Navy, I KNOW most missiles DO fly high enough to bring down the common drone. Just ask any pilot that hears the lock on coming from his left earpiece.

The fact is US has never won a war since world war 2 because they have started unjust wars. The world war was just and they won that. When nations are on path of destruction they often don't realize it until it is too late. USSR is an example how unjust wars destroy countries and super powers.

No. This statement is not true. The concept of "just" and "unjust" war is a false concept when it comes to wars. Wars are not fought for justice. They are fault for strategic needs of the nations involved. The US did not fight the World War 2 to stop the genocide that was occurring. It fought it for the strategic need of preventing Japan and Germany from controlling more of the world.

The reason that the US has a hard time now at winning a war is more because the population has a problem stomaching the nature of war. In one day on the beaches of Normandy, the Allied forces lost it is believed to be over 6000 soldiers KIA, and another 8-12k wounded. That was one day. That attrition rate was not condemned by the population of the Allied forces, yet the 4000+ soldiers that have died in 3650+ days of action for both Iraq and Afghanistan are condemned. The involvement of the US into WW2 was participated by an attack on a US military base and city. The involvement of the US in to the Afghanistan war was participated by an attack on a civilian building in a US city.

As another point, the US involvement in WW2 consisted of massive bombing campaign on civilian cities and targets as well as military ones. We carpet bombed ball bearing factors in Germany and dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan. There was massive civilian deaths as a result of the military actions of the US on that war. To the point that the governments of those nations said "We give up". Yet, in the wars of modern times since, any civilian deaths are condemned at the highest possible way.

"WAR" is dirty. War is not a clean action. This belief that there is a such a thing as a "just war" or a "clean war" IS what makes wars near impossible to win in the western civilizations. History of the human race has long shown that a winner of a war is the one willing to completely destroy all parts of an opposing nation. Look at Sherman's burning of Atlanta in the US civil war. Look at the privateering aspects of the French and England conflicts of the middle ages. Look the cities destroyed by Caesar or Hannibal or Alexander. War is not clean or just. If it is to be done and the desire is to win, than it has to be dirty and mean and just about the worse thing in human nature to do.

We need to do whatever it takes to get away from importing OIL, and use all the money that goes into Wars to find alternatives, or OIL that is in our areas.

It should be noted that removing depending on oil as a means of energy product would not reduce the strategic importence of some areas like Afghanistan or Pakistan. May of our modern day devices and green technologies have become relent on what is called "rare earth metals". While these items are found in a few other locations in the world, both Afghanistan and Pakistan have known high quantities of these limited resources. And they are needed for that item on your hip or in your purse known as your cell phone as well as those electic cars being advertized by Ford and Honda.

By blowing up their innocent citizens and making sure generations of their family's will hate us.

We are the terrorists greatest recruitment tool.

If we had another country flying drones, blowing up schools and roads killing our citizens on a daily basis we would have American terrorists all over this country and I'd be one.

With the amount we spend on wars we could have Marines in every single air and sea port inspecting all ships and planes with destinations to this country. Then after a generation where we aren't killing them, spying on them, causes coups to get rid of their democratically elected leaders and installing dictators this crap will go away.

Posse Commitatus meaning anything to you?

That's why I said, "every single air and sea port inspecting all ships and planes with destinations to this country".

They would be in other countries doing the inspecting. Since we have bases in like 170 countries it shouldn't be hard to convince them that all flights heading to the states be inspected.

Also the Posse Comitatus Act will be repealed soon, the NDAA is about to hit Obamas desk approved by Republicans and Democrat traitors and after Obama signed the Patriot Act I expect he will sign this even though he says he will veto it. Apparently, the Patriot Act was powerful enough for the traitors running our country. Now instead of secret courts where we don't get to face our accusers, see the evidence against us or show evidence we are innocent, with the NDAA the Military will be able to just snatch us up and lock us away forever without due process. While we are bombing countries that do the same thing and applying sanctions on them our leaders are passing legislation to do it to us. However, we won't have anyone to rescue us.

Seriously Khalid? Without the U.S. you and yours would still be living in the stone age, killing women for practicing witchcraft, stoning women who get raped, and allowing honor killings....Oh wait never mind.

If we were harboring terrorists in our country and unwilling to do anything about it, you'd be right. Sorry, Charlie.

Bottom line on this is that Pakistan has told the United States to leave their country. For the U.S. to stay one day longer than that was an act of war and aggressive behavior on the part of the U.S.

I agree that Pakistan is nothing but a terrorist sympathizing country and all monies and military support for them should be stopped immediately. But, all of that aside and it doesn't matter what arguments anyone comes up with, they said leave and by international law the U.S. should leave.

Let's wash our hands of all of this and leave them to their bickering and fighting. OR we go ahead and declare war on them, as there's enough proof on the table that Pakistan is guilty of aiding terrorists who have attacked the international community. Short of that, we MUST leave their country or it is the United States who are the aggressors in this and are seen as the bad guys.

So let's leave and take all our money and military equipment with us. No more money for them. All we should send them is their own citizens back that are here in our country. Far too many.

Not only take our money and military equipment back- but totally remove all the 7 year tax free incentives and visas for those planning to come here in the future for free education, or to open a hotel or gas station. lol

I disagree. We shouldn't just take back money and military equipment. We should send them the bill for cleaning their house for them.

Your statement does not represent fact - Nevertheless would like to send back all of them Paks working on US military software and 'smart-weapons' too? You do know that you can't compete with them on advanced maths! And what you recommend ...that may be exactly what the Pak's would like. Lol!

Wrong! We can surely compete with them on advanced math or in any other subject. All of the Pakis in the US are a national security threat anyway and they should have their Visas revoked and be sent home. We should stop all aid money sent to Pakistan and stop issuing Visas for the Pakis to come here. We don't need them here. Just close the US consulates there.

I'm thinking that's not a good idea, a lot of innocent children, and non-terrorist civilians would be killed, and that would only increase the "Destroy Americans" mentality in the rest of the Muslim world here and abroad......but I am definitely for targeted strikes on any military installation and current Government officials (past and present)........you want to go to the 7-11 on the corner in your neighbor only to be blown up by a suicide bomber because you ran out of beer, cigs, and pork rinds? Yet, I have a feeling it won't be long until that starts here, thanks to our "Great" foreign policies of the past...

We're trying to lessen the "Destroy American" mentality? Has ANYTHING we've done since we've become a democracy with individual freedoms ever resulted in anybody from that part of the world thinking they don't want to "Destroy America?" Perhaps we should stop searching for various nice things we can do (many of them Obama-inspired) to change the "Destroy America" mentality. We need to sustain our military strength (who said, "Peace through Strength"?) and forget about the let's-be-nice-concept...it doesn't work.

Our arrogance (stupidity), our lack of information about other countries and cultures, self centered, spoiled upbringing, has caused and will cause us to destroy ourselves! Great Empires in the past due to these reasons have destroyed themselves from within, not by their enemies!

If we want to continue to be a great nation where we can be seen as roll models and be respected all over the world, not for our money or by being a bully, we need to make sure we act as super humans and not as apes!

Information (the right type, not fabricated) should come from independent sources. Currently 96% of the media is owned by six people! and their primary concern is not US! search on google and read more about it.

Since WWll we've been into meaningless wars which has not only costed us billions but more importantly lives! for whom and for what? only the corporates and banks have benefited from this not US. Our reputation in the world has and is being tarnished as a great country in the hands of very few who's primary concern is not US but some other country thousands of miles away from here! Its time to Wisen Up!

That will never happen, heck Iran possibly "shot down" a top secret drone and the US had several opportunity's to do one of several things; blow up the site where the drone is, send in SF team to get it back or even possibly pay for it....it does not matter because Mr. Obama refused to take any kind of action on this matter. Obama cited that he didn't want to start a war with Iran, WOW and to think some of you people voted for the spineless wonder.

Sorry got off tract, Obama will not order a darn thing again Pakistan for the same reasons, keep giving them aid Mr. Wonder.

                                                Dangerous Mind,

There is absolutely no proof that Bin Laden was killed. No real time video of the raid was released, as they carried out a raid the White House said they watched as it happened, no photos of the body released because supposedly it would upset the terrorists, I suppose they weren't upset when we claimed we killed him but would have been really pissed of we showed proof of it. And lastly, the entire Seal Team 6 who supposedly carried out this raid are all killed less than a month later by an RPG shot into an open back door of a CH-46, which happens to be only the second CH-46 shot down in ten years of the war. The only logical reason to eliminate Seal Team 6 would not be to keep them quiet about the raid since it was publicly acknowledged that they were the ones that supposedly killed Bin Laden (Normally when any operation of this type is carried out the unit is not specified as was Seal Team 6, normally it would be released as "Members of the Navy Seals" carried out a raid that killed OBL... That in itself seemed odd to me when the actual unit was announced, just doesn't happen that way.) rather the only logical reason to eliminate Seal Team 6 would be to keep them quiet about a raid that never happened or at least not the way it was presented to the public.

The political payoff for releasing photo or video comfirmation of OBLs capture and/or killing would be something no politician could resist. It would be political gold, but it never happened. One has to ask oneself why. Does the photo or video proof exist ? Since we can't prove that it does we must assume that it doesn't since its existence has not been confirmed.

The only "proof" the world has of OBLs death is the word of a politician in a re-election campaign and the backup by a hand full of people who he gave jobs to. Hearsay evidence at best that wouldn't hold up in court since there is no evidence or proof that the events actually happened as stated.

Your references to Libya are apples to oranges. Libyans did the ground fighting, NATO did the bombing by using the British and French for 90+%. The U.S. did provide AWACS support and did perform a very few specialized bombing missions, so Obama didn't win any war, he assisted NATO in supporting the Qaddafi opposition who actually won their own war with NATOs help.

Soldiersdad, Al Qaeda acknowledged Obama's death on one of their websites. Maybe Al Qaeda is in cahoots with Obama. The formal name for "Seal Team 6" is "The United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG), commonly known as DEVGRU." NSWDG is divided into color-coded line squadrons: Red Squadron (Assault), Blue Squadron (Assault), Gold Squadron (Premier Squadron) and a recently-formed Silver Squadron (Assault). There is also a Gray Squadron (Boat Crews) and a Black Squadron (Reconnaissance and Surveillance squadron). Each squadron is divided into three troops and troops are also divided into smaller teams.

So, "Seal Team 6" is composed of a a number of smaller units and subunits. The men killed in the CH event you referenced weren't from the same one that took out OBL. This was reported widely and repeatedly at the time. I assume you didn't believe those reports.

I postulated that OBL is still alive and experienced "rendition" so he could be "debriefed" free of encumbrances from all manner of "special interest" groups ranging from anti-torture humanitarian do-gooders to Al Qaeda members and sympathizers who would start a world wide campaign of kidnapping, hostage-taking, and slaughter to try to coerce his release. And that would be fine with me. However, I've come to believe the guy is really dead, because "Seal Team Six" spared a number of people in OBL's compound, including those of his wives who lived there, including one wife who was present in the room where OBL was shot in the head and killed. The Seals left these survivors for the Pakistanis to find. My guess is that Al Qaeda reported OBL's death because OBL's wife watched him die and confirmed it to them. I think this is for the best. That was one fellow who needed to die, and to die quickly and with as little fanfare as possible. Dumping his body quietly into the ocean was brilliant.

Barack Obama had the dilemma of notifying the Pakistani authorities and letting them deal with OBL, or hoping they'd let us take him out, or just doing it ourselves on the QT. When Bush had OBL trapped at Tora Bora, he was persuaded that the politically correct thing to do was to let the local tribesman take him. We saw what happened with that strategy. OBL has some serious guts. He basically said, #&%$ the Pakistanis, we're going in and taking him. I'm very pessimistic about the extent to which the Pakistanis really can be trusted to be our allies in rooting out these death-to-America numbnuts. I think there are some good folks there who really are with us. But I don't think they have the kind of numbers or clout to keep all the extremists in power over there at bay. Sadly, I believe we may at some point need to launch some very aggressive military action against the Pakistanis, hopefully with allies like India to lend a hand. I say this with a heavy heart, but the nukes over there have to be fought over rather than just meekly surrendered to people who want to coerce the world to live under Sharia law. To my way of thinking, there really are good and evil forces in this world, and that #$%* is just plain evil.

                                                Scanpanman,

I wasn't aware of the breakdown of the seal units so that info is appreciated. I also never heard or don't recall the reports that the Seal Team 6 killed in the CH-46 weren't the same ones, so that would make a difference.

I'm really not a conspiracy theory nut, but things just didn't seem to add up with the information I had. I agree that dumping the garbage at sea was much better than having a shrine somewhere for the nutjobs to go worship him. I had forgotten about the wife or two that watched him get his reward, I'm glad the left them alive so the could tell the others in graphic detail what happens to their leadership when they're caught up with.

I think Obama did the right thing by acting then notifying the Paks. If he'd have notified them first OBL would have been gone when we got there. The Paks have proven time and time again that they aren't our allies and can't be trusted, they are just playing us for our money and the sad part is that we keep giving it to them. I agree that we will most likely have to go in and destroy or remove their nukes and I believe that India would be more than happy to help us out, I hope so. If that does happen in the forseeable future my son will most likely be involved since he is in a combat brigade of the 101st.

True that there are good and evil forces in the world, I hope the good continues to triumph over evil.

There's a real reason why the U.S. continues to support and protect aggressive countries such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., and Israel. Think about it.

If Pakistan does anything aggresive, take out all their air bases and their nuclear plants. India will then invade and take over Pakistan. Yes, a hundred or maybe even thousands of US citizens may be killed. But do your research and see how many American troops died is past wars. The bull@!$%# stops NOW !!!!

for decades we have supported leaders in these middle eastern countries with billions of dollars just so U.S. oil companies could have access to the wells and rape the world, and in return we are hated by all who live in these countries, no money ever went to helping these people in only went into the pockets of those who would benefit the U.S. and big oil, while many in the middle east lived in poverty there was no effort from the U.S. to pressure these paid leaders to give funds to the people instead it became a feeding frenzy for arms companies that sold billions in military weapons to these country with the money that should have gone to the poor and now the meek will inherit the world through fear, we can send all the troops we want but we will never win, the hate for the U.S. is greater than a jilted bride, we reaped the benefit and exploited these countries for oil and wars and now we want to be friends to people who have seen their families suffer under the leaders we supported , just wait until the oil goes dry, then what?

We will never abandon that area and will not walk away from Pakistan because of all of those Nukes they have. They could easily end up in terrorist hands if we don't fund them and keep their army strong and on our side. Their military had to do something after this latest mistake from our Drone. But behind the scenes I am sure our CIA guys are still all over that country.

no one is on our side over there anymore. Let's pack up and bring our folks back and turn the Indians loose on them. They've already done the math, and India is prepared to take the first strike and then annihilate the Paks. They've done the math.

Those nukes are already in terrorist hands. Pakistan has proven by their actions they support terrorist and are not in the fight to end terrorism.

If I read them I'd think somebody was writing with English as a second language. First let me reiterate, I disagree with all the jingoistic comments above mine.

I should think they would blow them up. Your readers seem to think we'd all be fine with their drones flying over our cities and plains. There is no US Raj over Pakistan so I'd be surprised if they missed any opportunity they had to blow the suckers to hell!

They have given the lives of their 30,000 soldiers and civilians for this war. Even after that, we consider them as enemies and kill their soldiers then obviously this friendship can't last. Sorry to see it go like this.

Your conclusions are correct but you may inadvertently have transposed facts: Before he became president, Ronald Reagan conspired with the Iranians in the Iran-Contra affair: Arms & ammo, treasure, drugs - conspiracy against the release of US hostages, delaying their release before he took office. This conspricy was against the United States, its Armed Forces, its Institutions and its people... And against the sitting US President Jimmy Carter...In these actions Ronald Reagon committed the highest from of treason possible against the United States!

After becoming president, with the help of this black-mail, Reagen contributed to the slaughter of a hundreds of San Salvadoran villagers, mostly Christians and their families; some had taken refugee in Churches...they were hunted down and slaughtered there at the feet of their Saviour(Statue).

Ronald Reagen has many similar nefarious feathers in his cap: Including the making of a flippant remark in an official speech, in which he said to the Soviet Union: :"Our bombers are on the way". This put the the Soviet multi-tipped ICBM's ticking on there launch pads - 100MegaTon Yield each - before the Pentagon was able to explain Reagen's limited mental capacity to the Soviets...and convinced them to stand down!

Osama Bin Laden was provided aid, comfort and concealment by the Pakistani government or persons in control of the Pakistani government. Hiding our enemy while accepting our aid makes you our enemy. So you should shoot down our drones and prepare for the consequences. Drones can shoot back.

How are we going to win when the country is surrounded by Arabs? Get out and let the Taliban take over. Then, when our interests are attacked, all the bad apples will be in one bunch for our missiles to exterminate! Education system - your people come to the US for the best education and then run back and talk @!$%# about the country you were educated in. Let me know hwen you get out of the fricken stone age.

It is sad that you guys don't utilize the great educational institutions of America to get educated. Its time to move out of that trailer park and see the world. Strangely enough there is life outside of the great USA.

                                                                      #24.10 - Sun Dec 11, 2011 5:23 AM EST

And secondly, World's greatest universities holder with most intelligent people (hahaha,, as they think, but reality is opposite), has the world's most uncertain economy with the world's greatest debt of about 14 trillion dollar (from IMF, China and other countries), the most expensive spy agency of the world is still on 6th positions. When americans cannot grip their economy then how they hold the other situations.

I really don't understand why the USA has to play big brother all the time, just stick with supporting Israel. The Pak's and Indi's can't get along with each other, all over there are nothing but lying cut throats. Just ask USSR, they were smarter than us and backed out. Think about it we're essentially fighting our own trained troops in Afghanistan, we trained them to fight against Russia.

Just pack up our $hit and come home, use them to seal off the southern boarder. We wouldn't have a problem there now either if the idiot peace loving liberals were here. Just simple math, if it crosses the US boarder illegally it's fair game start shooting. That would end the so-called "tragic" lives they have trying to cross into the USA.

We are getting out now, but next time we will really kill some women and children -- next time we will fire multiple warhead intercontinental ballistic missiles, and we will eliminate about 200 million Muslims. So, are you guys going to leave us alone?

If you are referring to 9/11 then go and do some research. Everyone (not us, but your own Americans) is agreeeing that 9/11 was a big conspiracy against Muslims. You have worlds best technology, defence system and you believe that couple of Muslims just came like that from nowhere, hacked your plane, and destroyed that building? Really! I don't want to go into details of 9/11 because every details is already there on internet & media.

".. but next time we will really kill some women and children -- next time we will fire multiple warhead intercontinental ballistic missiles, and we will eliminate about 200 million Muslims."

Isn't this what you are doing now? Drone attacks in Pakistan are just killing innocent children's & women's. You just throw a million dollar cruise missile on some xy target because you THINK that there lies some terrorist and who dies? You media won't tell you but your cruise missiles are just killing women & children.

This ain't the way of fighting terrorism. Instead, you are just provoking hatred. Americans are on a war because they want to capture oil, money, & land. For that, they need to fool you guys and trust me they are doing it very well. I won't say that we will fire warhead intercontinental ballistic missiles because this isn't the solution. Get some un-biased education. Explore the world from your own. Do some research instead of listening the only BBC & CNN.

We're paying them and they're killing our soldiers. Good grief. All we've done is make everything worse. We should have pulled bin Laden out of his hole in Tora Bora, declared victory, and come home. Still unexplicable how we let the Afghani locals handle it, and of course, he got away (what a surprise).Time to come home, RIGHT NOW.
