Subscribe to RSSNAIROBI, Kenya -- An American military drone that had been used to monitor piracy off the East African coast has crashed at an airport on the island nation of Seychelles during a routine patrol, officials said Tuesday.
The U.S. Embassy in Mauritius said the unmanned U.S. Air Force MQ-9 Reaper was not armed and that the crash caused no injuries. The crash sparked a fire that was quickly extinguished.
Lina Laurence of Seychelles' civilian aviation authority said the drone developed engine problems minutes into its flight and needed to land as soon as possible Tuesday morning.
"But due to its accelerated landing speed, the aircraft was unable to stop before the runway's end," Laurence said.
The embassy's statement said the cause of the crash is being investigated.
"It has been confirmed that this drone was unarmed and its failure was due to mechanical reasons," Laurence said.
The affected runway was closed for about 10 minutes as a "precautionary measure," but was later reopened with no disruption to airport operations, Laurence said.
The U.S. military and the civilian aviation authority of Seychelles have coordinated to remove the debris, officials said.
While U.S. Air Force officials attempt to determine the cause of the crash, initial reports indicate that upon landing the drone failed to stop and ran off the runway into large rocks along the shoreline, U.S. officials said in Washington.
The MQ-9 Reaper is a medium-to-high altitude unmanned aircraft system with sensors that can provide real-time data. The Seychelles-based MQ-9s, which are used to monitor piracy activities in and around the Indian Ocean, don't carry weapons, though they have the capability to do so.
Tuesday's crash follows last week's claim by Iran that it seized a drone identified as the RQ-170 Sentinel. Tehran said it was captured over the country's east. The nearly intact drone was displayed on state TV and flaunted as a victory for Iran in a complicated intelligence and technological battle with the U.S.
U.S. officials said the unmanned aircraft malfunctioned and was not brought down by Iran. President Barack Obama said Monday the U.S. wants the top-secret aircraft back and has delivered a formal request for the return of the surveillance drone, though it isn't hopeful that Iran will comply.
The U.S. has used drones to hunt down al-Qaida-linked militants in Somalia and Yemen, among other countries. Their humming is a constant feature in the sky in many of the major towns in southern Somalia, especially the capital city and the militant-controlled southern port of Kismayo. It was not clear if drones operated out of the Seychelles are used for that purpose.

North Korea has an active duty US Naval ship captured and on display in pyongyang...the USS Pueblo.
They both should have been destroyed when it became obvious we were not going to regain possession of it.
I remember the Pueblo incident well. I didn't know that they still had it and that it was on display. Must make them feel so proud. As their own people starve due to their ridiculous political stubbornness.
But as far as Iran goes...don't know yet if they will give it back...after all, we have not denied the spy mission.
Destruction is not easy, without an overt act of war.
Why? What has crashed is now obsolete technology. The Iranian drone and the USS Pueblo are simply trophies that hold little value in the way of bragging rights. Neither constitutes a loss that wasn't allowed for prior to their commissionings.

The aircraft was streaming its information to a satellite and then to some other hard drive. Let them have it. If they did not plan for a downed mission they would be idiots. Smoke and mirrors.

The drones should have fail safe self destruct devices.
They should have, but it's very evident they don't. Until they do, we may be giving our enemies more information than we are gaining. This makes our spy corps (whoever they are ) look rather stupid.

USS Pueblo and a stealth drone as public trophies. Gadhafi had a rather clever sculpture of a fist grasping an F-18 Hornet symbolic of his survival of "American aggression", but didn't really serve him too well in the end.

If it crash lands it will take substantial damage (there's no way the drone the Iranians have in the picture is the actual drone. A fall from 50,000 feet would've destroyed it)

When the drone went down in Iran, the electronics on the thing are worth a fortune and if the hull is damaged, they have the material as well as images on the Internet. It wouldn't exactly take the world's finest to replicate the thing. It's made to glide quietly and even at low altitudes.

I'm with JK. Who cares. The technology isn't exactly at risk here, they can't reproduce these things. Historically speaking, look how difficult it was for Russia to reproduce B-52s in the Cold War, and those didn't have a fraction of the technology and billions of lines of programming that these drones have.
And I don't believe the drone Iran has on display is real, looks fake and nothing like the pictures of real ones.
The drone is real there is no benefit to Iran to lie.

I think Pakistanies have been misinformed that unmanned plane is a spy plane. They can buy that from any American toy shop and place their thermometer on that to find the atmospheric pressure in their country. And take the permission before using for this purpose because these plane are to use in a specific way.
I am sure that Pakistani will be stealing one of the Unmanned plane through different country from the America without American permission. That plane will be shot in the air by the American plane. Try a little critical fact-checking. USS Pueblo, captured in international waters off NK coast in 1968, while LBJ had us so bogged down in Viet Nam that we couldn't do anything but complain about it. Captained by Lt. Cdr. Lloyd Blucher, IIRC. One of the low points of post-WW II U.S. history, and something to be remembered whenever people are giving out the designation of "Worst President Ever" (realistically, all of those were probably pre-WW II).

Arizona constantly relies on Federal money because they couldn't manage on the State and local level to save their life. The moon has less craters than AZ roads - no inspectors means all our roads got paved with half the asphalt needed....kick back city.

no, we've just become slack. I have worked in the Aerospace Industry for 30 years. About 10 years ago most companies were taken over by bean counters who care only about revenue and profit, not quality and performance. Same thing happened to our auto industry. It's the new corporate America...

Any mechanical device will fail. Moving parts don't move forever. I'd say maintenance failed to catch a problem.
Randy....you're correct about the bean counters, but way off, I believe, on the idea of quality and performance. We hear a lot about shoddy materials and such, but I'll tell you that's just not the case. It's possible that someone may try to push out substandard material, but they are committing business suicide by doing it with military material. That's a fact!
Things that make you go. "Hummm":
1. Was this some kind of disinformation tactic by the CIA: send in and crash a "non-stealth" stealth vehicle?
2. Why are there no provisions to completely destroy these "high tech and secretive" machines? Certainly, primer cord or well placed C-4 would do a nice job.
3. How are the Russians and/or Chinese involved with this "downing".
It's not beyond belief that control transmissions were hacked. If it didn't happen here it will in the near future. It would be a huge victory for the cyber groups like ANONYMOUS to pull something like this off. Giving a stealth weapon to our enemies wouldn't bother them a bit. One can only hope military programmers are working to make this a non-reality.

Hey, we should not lose sight of the up side. Not ten years ago, both of those vehicles would have been piloted. Maybe the pilots would have survived, and maybe they wouldn't have. Either way we would have lost two manned aircraft that cost several times as much.
So, while the loss of these drones is not good, it's not nearly as bad as it would have been.

The Africans wouldn't know what to do with a crashed drone except maybe sell it and I guess that could be dangerous depending on who bought what, if anything was left.

Anyway, I believe we learned our lesson in Iraq with the "no bid contract" scheme, when the KBR/Haliburton/Bechtel gazzillionaire pals of Bush/Cheney electrocuted our troops in the showers.
It seems as though I just recently read an article about how our drone program had been hacked into but no one was worried about it because they said that it appeared as though they were only observing how the UAVs were being piloted and the commands that were being sent to them. I guess now we know why they were doing this.

Lost of military hardware is a a norm in time of war. Happens all the time. As for other losses in the past. Who gives a dammed what happened in the past unless of course we failed to learn a lesson from the incident. In the case of pirates I think finding out what towns and cities along the coasts in the general area are supporting them and those should be leveled and laid waste. I know it sounds harsh but driving the point home is the only thing that some will listen to. Stealing the life blood from someone else is no way to survive or make your own life better.
