67-foot wave recorded off Irish coast

LONDON - A wave measuring 67 feet -- the biggest ever to be recorded off Ireland -- hit the country's northwest shores on Tuesday, according to meteorologists.

The Guardian newspaper reported that the wave was measured by a buoy about 60 milles off the Donegal coast during a fierce storm.

"At 14.00 today the M4 weather buoy off the Donegal coast recorded a maximum wave height of 20.4 meters which is the highest maximum wave recorded in Irish waters," the Irish meteorological service said on its website.

The data from the buoy gave evidence of the most severe weather conditions recorded that distance from land, The Guardian reported, meteorologists said.

Much of the United Kingdom has been experiencing particularly stormy conditions over the past several days, with high winds of up to 80 mph in some areas, driving rain and blizzards.

This may be the largest wave they have ever recorded in Irish waters, but rogue waves this size are certainly not that unusual. Rogue waves occur that are two and even three times the average wave height so a farily common storm in the ocean with 30 foot waves can generate rogue waves of 60 to 90 feet.

Just watched, too, bore head; absolutely incredible! Oddly, seems that although obviously not a relaxed crew, they seem to be more or less not so worried (didn't have sound on.... just viewed footage).

Hard to believe, but until recently, rogue waves such as the monster off Ireland were thought to be speculative or exaggerated. Granted, there were storm conditions this time, but the right conditions, cyclical and resonating 'wave' effects building upon eachother, and there you have it.... a wall of water that's unbelievable!!

the biggest Rogue wave ever filmed was in 1945, the Queen Mary was bringing soldiers back from Europe, a escort ship filmed a 100 foot wave that struck the Queen , the Captain saw it coming and was able to quarter the wave, it hit with such force all electricity went out in the ship for a couple of minutes, until the back up was engaged, when I was in the Navy, I saw some big ones in the North Sea, however not a 60-100 footer, scary situation.

When you are out there you just roll with it.

Instinct will tell you when its time to become excited. Or a loud crash that sounds unfamiliar.

I'll bet the guys on the trawler felt uncomfortable, but confident!

Nope, rogue waves have been spotted by mariners for centuries, the first one actually measured scientifically was back in '95.

Its just a matter of a bunch of little waves building into a monster when conditions are right.

Nice and opaque and covers every plausible and conceivable type of atypical weather pattern and event ---

militant environmentalism is the last attempt for pro-statist individuals to grab humanity by the the throat and control and manage the very minutia of your lives --- from the lightbulbs you buy to the car you drive to the type of job you have ( it better be a green job that barry and company are attempting to dole out else your nothing but a greedy stupid capitalist, who is destroying the earth and the economy)

enough with the chicken little mentality about the weather ---

Mike-L - Agreed rogue waves have nothing to do with climate change.

alinnj - Interestingly a previous skeptic in a study partially funded by the Koch brothers has recently found that the data really does show warming temperatures. Here is a link from the Washington Times (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/oct/31/skeptic-finds-he-now-agrees-global-warming-is-real/) which is a historically conservative newspaper. You will note that the Koch brothers are also unlikely to fund something with a liberal agenda. The point here: Climate change is real. The piece of data that is not determined is if it is anthropomorphic (caused by man) or natural. I am suspecting that many years down the road, our kids will learn that the Sun is the largest contributor to the Earth's weather (shocking I know), but that humans also impact the climate (maybe that would be shocking to some). So what's the point? Being a climate change denialist just makes you look ill-informed. If you want to argue about it, argue about anthropomorphic change vs. natural change - just don't deny that the ice is melting (it is).

Well, J.Scott. I guess from your reply, you are a Left-Wing Liberal, and most probably, an ignorant one. I think most conservatives believe in global warming, but probably don't believe we have much of an impact on it.

As Battsman said, it's primarily an argument of anthropomorphic vs. natural. After all, the global climate began warming, again, almost 11,000 years before Al Gore began making money off of it. Most of us believe that it's a good idea to limit pollution and try to limit our impact on the environment. And yet you mistakenly point your grubby little finger at Conservatives. When conservatives mainly are about personal responsibility, and would like to keep the government from poking their fingers into every aspect of our lives. How can you not agree with the need for more personal responsibility, unless you are a child who needs others to tell you what to do, how to do it, and to hold your hand while doing it.

So we need to find a way, together, to limit our environmental impact, but not cut ourselves off at the knees economically while doing it. To claim that Conservatives are anti-global warming is like saying Liberals are all welfare recipients.

This is just a unitary phenomenon. It is no more proof of global warming than a cold day in December is proof that the Earth is not warming.

Wish I could have seen this wave, from a safe vantage point of course.

That wave has to be pretty amazing, considering that hurricanes and tsunamis usually don't generate waves much above 30 feet. Sounds like a storm-driven "rogue wave."

Once again: Please look at the work of Scott Owen, a geodocist, from Goshen, Ca. He has spoken on this PARTICULAR senario involving Ireland & the U.K. These events are NOT caused by the 'BOGUS: manmade global warming/climate change theories" The cause of these events is: POSTGLACIAL REBOUND EFFECT (isostasy): nuclear fallout in the ice, has melted the ice at the poles, glaciers are melting (greenland rapidly) the fresh water is going into the ocean and pooling, stalling the ocean current and putting tremedous pressure on the ocean floor causing it to SINK which puts pressure on the natural piping systems that go around this planet. Using maps of the ocean floor, and calculating pressure and weight, Scott has predicted that ISLANDS WILL SINK. The ocean HAS NOT RISEN-islands are sinking. Scott has made dire predictions for Ireland and coming climate change for the U.K. I invite all of you to view his videos on youtube: believersunderground channel. Also, you can call Scott and ask him yourself as he has a daily radio show which, can be accesed on the web: libertybroadcasting network 10am to 12noon eastern standard time. He will gladly explain all of this to anyone who asks. EVERYTHING that this man has stated so far has come to pass. He also predicted the New Zealand & Japanese events WELL BEFORE they took place. This man has desperately been trying to warn humanity. Are you listening MEDIA? What will the headline be today? Kim Kardashian has another beau? Lindsay Lohan overimbibes? Black bear eats from family's birdfeeder?

Incidently...all you "global warming" et al "climate change" pukes - the earth is warming all right 0.1 degrees - big EFFIN deal - all within the natural variability of the earth. BTW, the polar ice caps are also melting on Mars - I guess there must be a fleet of SUVs roaming that planet as well. The link is....here it comes...the sun's energy output is variable...OOPS! Sometimes it's less and we get colder weather...sometimes it's more and we get warmer weather. Sometimes it's stable and the weather patterns globally become stable.

If you want to see a great musical that mimics the clowns in the environmental movement, watch "The Music Man" - well, my friends, we've got trouble right here in River City...hand over the money and I'll fix your problems...

Man will never achieve running a four minute mile, there will never be a need for a hard drive larger than eighty five Kbits. There has been found remnants of plant life on Antartica and the magnetic poles have always been migrating. I go for the rogue wave helped by climate change theory. The climate has always changed and will always change long after the end of man and until the atmosphere is stripped by solar winds and earth becomes a frozen barren rock, unless the moon falls down and earth shakes itself to pieces like a 57 Ford F-150 with shot ball joints.
