UK soldiers arrested after Afghan sex abuse report

Updated at 9:35 a.m. ET: Reuters reports that two British soldiers have been arrested for "inappropriate behavior" in Afghanistan, according to the British Ministry of Defence.

Reuters adds:

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said in a statement that the government in Kabul was "deeply disturbed" by reports of abuse, and said their alleged behavior was "immoral."

The alleged incident comes just a week after a video emerged showing U.S. Marines urinating on corpses, believed to be dead Taliban fighters, that caused outrage across Afghanistan.

"The government of Afghanistan is immensely disgusted by the rise in recent incidents of immoral nature among foreign soldiers that clearly undermine public confidence and the Afghan people's cooperation with foreign troops," Karzai's office said.

The Royal Military Police have launched an investigation into allegations against the two soldiers, a ministry spokesman said, but declined comment on the nature of the allegations.

"Two service personnel have been arrested, interviewed under caution and released," the spokesman said, adding that the ministry took any such allegations extremely seriously.

Published at 7 a.m. ET: The Sun reported that Prime Minister David Cameron was "deeply shocked" in the wake of claims that the pair, a sergeant and a private, filmed the separate incidents involving a boy and girl aged around 10.  The two then reportedly showed the footage to other servicemen, the newspaper reported.

Defense officials who informed Cameron of the allegations told him that the pair had been arrested, The Sun reported.

The U.K.'s Ministry of Defense said it was taking the allegations "extremely seriously."

"We are aware that an allegation has been made concerning alleged inappropriate behaviour by two servicemen in Afghanistan. The Royal Military Police (Special Investigations Branch) has launched an investigation into this," it said in a statement to msnbc.com. "It would be inappropriate to comment further while an investigation is ongoing."

The allegations come just days after the American military was hit by video showing Marines urinating on Taliban corpses.

Two UK soldiers serving in Afghanistan have been arrested after they allegedly encouraged two children to touch them inappropriately through their clothes, a British newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Reuters and msnbc.com staff contributed to this report.

I hope you are not right about that, Jim. I heard that the British soldiers told the kids that they had candy in their pockets. Don't know if it's true, but it sounds about right. Idiots.

I think it's about time we left, either that or there will be more than one more incident. It's just a matter of time before something like this lights the fuse.

You ever notice how it works. It's either really freaky or intentional. Three earthquake stories, three tsunami stories, and now we are waiting for the third "military screws up by acting like jerks" stories. We got the Marines pissing on bodies, Brits molesting kids, we need one more.

way to deliver "democracy". Hey all you morons is this also because of war-time stress? need little children to relieve your selves? I guess so, they already raped and burned a 14 year old along with her family in Iraq. And now lets hear from all the defenders. Perhaps all they needed was some bodies to pee on.

Are you still crying over the dead Taliban who tried to kill the people who wound up peeing on them, bFromNJ?

Why don't you pick up a gun and join the Taliban? Seems to be tempting for someone like yourself, no?

People are touching little kids all over the world inappropriately as I type this. Where are your tears for them? Or is your vitriol only reserved for a few bad soldiers so you can paint all soldiers as doing these things? Well then logic demands you condemn everyone on earth for the behavior of other men.

    Wacko.

I'm sure some people will say this is all part of war stress affecting the soldiers and defend this act with "Have you ever been in combat" or other BS.

@Sammy Jones this article is about these soldiers thus I condemned their actions, had this been an article about child abuse in the whole world I would condemn the behavior altogether, duh. Just in case CHILD MOLESTATION IS HORRIBLE NO MATTER WHO DOES IT!. Its pretty special when bright fellas like yourself put forth brilliant arguments such as yours :).. I actually didn't paint all the soldiers as bad you moron, I was alluding to and pointing out the behavior of many people who justify these kind of atrocities by saying its just "war time stress thats all folks". When my own room mates fought on the front line in Afghanistan and had no urge to abuse children, nor pee on the corpses of dead combatants or civilians. Read carefully champ.

    @AG99 valid point.

Sammy Johns, why don't you come in my yard and try to touch a kid. You won't leave except in a body bag, and that goes for ANYbody that does that. Leave kids alone!!! Btw Sammy, do you think it's respectful of me to pee on you in the funeral home when you die?? I'm sure your family would love and appreciate the sentiment, right?.*sarcasm* But, I'd have more respect as a human, and for THEM and not do it even though you're an idiot

Just to play Devil's Advocate, I am under the impression that Sammy here was taking offense to the specific expression voiced from bfromNJ, which (as written) seems to be an indictment of all coalition soldiers. Bringing in an unrelated (and already prosecuted) case of a 14 year old being raped in another country seems to justify that view. After bfromNJ clarified (rudely) at comment 2.7, I think his/her case is more clear-- but comment #2 does seem to implicate soldiers everywhere as murdering, raping, pissing thugs without any oversight or personal honor code-- which is laughably inaccurate. The way I took Sammy's comment was that it isn't right to condemn an entire demographic (US or Coalition Soldiers) for the idiotic actions of a minority (a very, very small minority, even within the confines of that already limited demographic). I think that ultimately, Sammy misread bfromNJ's comment and vice versa. So, "Eat some reds and try to calm down. Smoke some grass, shoot some smack-- sh*t, do whatever you have to do..." (Raoul Duke/HST: Fear & Loathing in LV).

          Afghanistan's dirty little secret

          August 29, 2010

          |By Joel Brinkley

For centuries, Afghan men have taken boys, roughly 9 to 15 years old, as lovers. Some research suggests that half the Pashtun tribal members in Kandahar and other southern towns are bacha baz, the term for an older man with a boy lover. Literally it means "boy player." The men like to boast about it.

"Having a boy has become a custom for us," Enayatullah, a 42-year-old in Baghlan province, told a Reuters reporter. "Whoever wants to show off should have a boy."

Baghlan province is in the northeast, but Afghans say pedophilia is most prevalent among Pashtun men in the south. The Pashtun are Afghanistan's most important tribe. For centuries, the nation's leaders have been Pashtun.

In Kandahar, population about 500,000, and other towns, dance parties are a popular, often weekly, pastime. Young boys dress up as girls, wearing makeup and bells on their feet, and dance for a dozen or more leering middle-aged men who throw money at them and then take them home. A recent State Department report called "dancing boys" a "widespread, culturally sanctioned form of male rape."

Yes indeed the Afghans engage in this man/boy love thing. N.A.M.B.L.A. should open a chapter in Kabul. It's being going on since the beginning of time and it will keep going on until the end of time. Those big tough warlords all have a boy. Since they hate women it makes perfect sense. But you have to wonder what the Quran says about boy rape. Do they condone such acts? Probably not. Only the little girls are officially targeted by Mohamed the Molester in his book of filth. The boys are probably well fed and clothed so they'll get something out of it besides pain from ugly old men. These British soldiers are probably admired by the Taliban since they have so much in common.

Then these kids grow up and repeat the cycle of abuse. Great, just great. ;>(

Paedophilia 'culturally accepted in south Afghanistan'

British forces were advised by a military study that paedophilia is widespread and culturally accepted in southern Afghanistan.

By Ben Farmer, Kabul 13 Jan 2011

Older, powerful men boosted their social status by keeping boys as sexual playthings and the practice was celebrated in song and dance, a military study claimed.

British officers in Helmand requested the study to help them understand the sexual behaviour of locals and Afghan comrades after young soldiers became uneasy they were being propositioned.

American social scientists employed to help troops understand the local culture reported that homosexual sex was widespread among the Pashtun ethnic group in southern Afghanistan.

Strict separation of men and women, coupled with poverty and the significant expense of getting married, contributed to young men turning to each other for sexual companionship.

"To dismiss the existence of this dynamic out of desire to avoid western discomfort is to risk failing to comprehend an essential social force underlying Pashtun culture," the report said.

The study, called 'Pashtun Sexuality', said that as well as willing sex between young men, "boys are appreciated for physical beauty and apprenticed to older men for their sexual initiation".

The practice of 'bache bazi' or boy play, is known throughout Afghanistan, but is particularly renowned in the city of Kandahar next to Helmand, where prepubescent boys are widely admired.

            "bacha bazi"

            The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan,

            Apr 20, 2010 .

As the United States deepens its commitment to Afghanistan, FRONTLINE takes viewers inside the war-torn nation to reveal a disturbing practice that is once again flourishing in the country: the organized sexual abuse of adolescent boys.

In The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan, Afghan journalist Najibullah Quraishi (Behind Taliban Lines) returns to his native land to expose an ancient practice that has been brought back by powerful warlords, former military commanders and wealthy businessmen. Known as "bacha bazi" (literal translation: "boy play"), this illegal practice exploits street orphans and poor boys, some as young as 11, whose parents are paid to give over their sons to their new "masters." The men dress the boys in women's clothes and train them to sing and dance for the entertainment of themselves and their friends. According to experts, the dancing boys are used sexually by these powerful men.

In detailed conversations with several bacha bazi masters in northern Afghanistan and with the dancing boys they own, reporter Quraishi reveals a culture where wealthy Afghan men openly exploit some of the poorest, most vulnerable members of their society.

"What was so unnerving about the men I had met was not just their lack of concern for the damage their abuse was doing to the boys," Quraishi says. "It was also their casualness with which they operated and the pride with which they showed me their boys, their friends, their world. They clearly believed that nothing they were doing was wrong."

Ignored by society, Afghan dancing boys suffer centuries-old tradition

            October 26, 2009|
            By Atia Abawi, CNN

A young boy dressed in women's clothing, his face caked in make-up, dances the night away for a crowd of men.

The bells on his feet chime away, mimicking the entertainment and sexual appeal of female dancers. But there is no mistaking his pubescent body and face as he concentrates, focusing on every step in order to please his master and his master's guests.

The boy is but one youth among many throughout the country forced into an age-old underground tradition known as "bacha bazi," or "boy play," in which young boys are taken from their families, made to dance and used as sex slaves by powerful men. The number of boys involved is unknown -- the practice has been going on for centuries, in a country where such practices are overshadowed by conflict and war.

            Afghanistan's Dancing Boys

            9 september, 2010

In a society where the sexes are strictly segregated, it is common for boys to dance for men at weddings and traditional gatherings.

However, it is what happens after the party that is the most disturbing. Many of the boys, some as young as 12 years old, are taken to hotels and sexually abused - sometimes by several men.

This is a practice that is dramatically at odds with the kind of society that the country's Western partners hope to encourage but - according to some reports - it is also a phenomenon that is growing.

Some viewers may find the content of this video upsetting.

Chuck, you're welcome to doubt it, but it doesn't make it any less true. It's traditional in Afghanistan (particularly amongst Pashtun). Sad, but unfortunately true.

I am sorry to say, but this is very true indeed to all the doubters. 'Bacha Bazzi' as it was told to us, means 'Boy Play' and in certain parts of Afghanistan it is culture.

We produced a documentary on this behaviour a year ago and it was shown on British TV as 'The dancing boys of Afghanistan'. Whilst it is not legal, it is a very cultural thing for men to have boys as objects of desire to play with as they wish, and the laws like many others are down to how much influence you have over the Police. The men look after the childrens needs in exchange for whatever they want to do. You need to realise that many poor children are left to fend for themselves at an early age, so having someone look after them gives them status among themselves. They do not know any better ! A civilized country, 'not'. Abuse is traditional there, but they do not see it as abuse, it is just normal to them. There are so many things going on around this world which we do not know about, and that surprises us when brought to light. It is shocking for us to think these things go on, but go on they do, and there is not much we can do about it. We cannot go invade every country that has poor human rights or whatever. All we can do is record what is happening and pass it on through TV.

Once again, proof that sexual abuse is a crime of power, not of passion. Even same-sex abuse has little to do with sexual attraction.

Let's kill the lie that gays abuse children--straights are FAR MORE likely to abuse than gays, even in same sex abuse. This story along with so many other in the news recently show that (Sandusky at Penn State, the Catholic Church priest scandal, the Mormon Church Boy Scout scandal, etc.--mainly straight men touching boys)

You are so correct about this. Heterosexuals want to smear gays and gay parenting when it's HETEROSEXUAL MEN who are the danger to kids. Statistics bare this out. As you said "straight" men are far more likely to rape a boy than a gay man. But once the pedophile acts out they'll say he was gay and that was the reason he raped the boy. What crap, heteros always blame the "other" people. If they're to believe that heterosexuals do this, then they have to admit they're capable of doing it. So lie and pretend it doesn't happen the way it really does happen.

But no matter how much or how effectively anyone lies, the truth is still the truth.

I can't imagine how much abuse and inappropriate behavior is going on. We only seem to be hearing about the ones so incredibly stupid that they take photos of it. Smile for the camera guys.

I would just like to remind all of you military haters that as a group military people are far more moral than non military people. Just look at your local news tonight and listen about all the rape, murder and other various crimes taking place.

Wow,I never thought I would see so many Americans defending child molestation.Looking for any excuse to defend the coalition soldiers. We are so afraid of having been wrong, that we have to come up with anything, not to admit it.Sure, these particular soldiers weren't ours, thank God,but the wee-wee boys were. There have also been many more stories, dismissed or overlooked by people, again, not wanting to hear the truth.Have we come to such a point ,that we hate Muslims so much, that we don't care about wrongs if there done to them.We are supposed to project a better image in the world, and must hold ourselves to a higher standard than our enemies are held. Those posts about Afghan culture are actually the worst.Because pedophilia may be widespread in another culture doesn't have anything to do with how we must behave. When Allied powers occupied Germany after WW2,we didn't say, since antisemitism and racial hatred was endemic there, then we should follow their customs. This problem isn't just a problem in Afghanistan, these type's of things happened in Iraq as well. When we don't control the behavior of people that represent our nation,we disgrace ourselves and give aid to our enemies.Sure its true that this men have a lot of stress over there. But during the fight against the Nazis, and Japan in WW2 ,those men where under at least as much stress, yet when we liberated those territories, and then occupied the enemy states. We didn't allow our troops to get away with crimes against civilians. What makes us great is that we DON'T act like our enemies in the same situation. If people don't agree with that, then we have a far worse problem than the terrorists.

I know that troop over there are fighting a war not like ww1 or ww2 where you took lan and held it but this war is crazy as hell, your friend is your enemy, terrorist don't wear uniforms-it's hard to tell who the enemy is-I think this brings more stress than a war like ww1 and ww2 but what they did was plain wrong. We need to get all troops out of that @!$%# whole country-we have nothing to gain there.

Is it not possible to condem or critizice an action without the use of abusive words? Why calling people ...idiot, stupid, wacko, numbskull etc ? I am always disgusted every time I read a comment with such dirty words. The soldiers deeds were morally wrong for whatever their reason.

The object for many is not to criticize, but to condemn and belittle. For that, pejoratives are a very effective tool. The fact that you are so easily disgusted makes you particularly vulnerable. I suggest that you understand that about yourself and make allowances before you again decide to roller-skate in a buffalo herd.
