As international tension with Iran mounts over sanctions creating a chokehold on the oil-rich nation's economy, life goes on for Iranians.
U.S. lawmakers crafted Section 1245 of the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2012 to reduce Iran's oil revenue as punishment for what the United States says is a program to develop a nuclear-weapon capability. Among other things, it prohibits financial institutions from dealing with Iran's central bank, which acts as the clearinghouse for OPEC's second-largest oil exporter.
Iranian officials earlier this month bluntly warned a U.S. carrier not to return to the Gulf and have threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, spooking oil markets and raising the specter of a U.S.-Iranian confrontation.
The West accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapons, but government officials claim the research is for peaceful purposes.
In Iranian cities, international affairs seem to go on far away as students still take music lessons, fishermen go out for their daily catches and canine lovers volunteer at local animal shelters.

What this item fails to mention is that as we speak two US aircraft carriers are approaching Iran and a third carrier is standing by in the Indian Ocean. It appears that the Nobel Peace Prize winner is about to kick off world war 3.
In the Chinese media today, China has indicated that both China and Russia are running out of patience with the United States consistent warmongering and have backed down as far as they are going to go. The article also suggests a military alliance between the two nations might be forged specifically to confront US and NATO aggression. Given the fact that the United States has illegally imposed sanctions on a Chinese company for refining oil products for Iran, has also contributed to the heightening of tensions. The United States is trying to force China to obey a US domestic law that it is not obligated to abide by as a sovereign nation. The Chinese company is not in any violation of the UN approved sanction regime in place against Iran.
The United States Government is endangering every American citizen and citizen of the world in it's persuit of world hegemony and domination by military force instead of pursuing peaceful negotiations.
True, add this to the pot, China, under cover of BP, is drilling oil as we speak in Southern Iraq. The US military gets shot at but not the Chinese. They hire locals, work them hard, pay them about what the US did for support work and the Chinese have the run of the town. They were allowed full use of the US military airport and customs/badging services....even on days when the US component was otherwise on total stand down. The US has pulled out of the area....what the H__— did we go in for????
A military alliance will do nothing, there is no WIN in a war against a nuclear nation like the US.

Are you saying that our ships do not have the right to sail in international waters, because Iran say we shouldn't be there. China doesn't have a free press so what ever they wrote is lip service. Iran grabbed our Embassy people in 1979 and raided the British Embassy last year how do you peacefully negotiate with some one who holds negotiators as hostages. We don't buy Iranian oil. What does China do if Iran closes the Strait? I think there is a lot more to the entanglements with Iran. Republicans want to go to Iran and bomb them into submission. I don't think the US government is "endangering every american citizen and citizen of the world" in trying to negotiate with Iran, in fact it's doing the exact opposite. What you fail to mention or acknowledge is that Iran has threatened to close international waters which it has absolutely no right to do. International waters are open to all nations, therefore we have our war ships on call to ensure that they stay open and that international commerce is not disrupted or impeded. We are not the only ones to benefit from these waters staying open, alot of nations depend on the oil coming through there.
Iran has supported Hezbollah and Al Quaida for years, both known terrorist groups and the latest word is their stooges were caught constructing a bomb or something in Thailand. Iran does not need nuclear weaponry to protect itself. No one has ever invaded Iran in the 20th century with the exception of Iraq, which is no longer a threat--so why does Iran need nuclear weapons to protect itself? BTW, Iran doesn't know how to get along with western nations, nor does it respect the sovereignty of foreign embassies/governments on its soil. Invading an embassy is an act of war in itself. The recent take over of the British embassy was a carefully planned event, orchestrated by the Iranian regime and with its full support. Iranian Revolutionary guards stood by while these people trashed the british embassy. So don't portray Iran like they're peaceful and non aggressive, which they're not. Threatening to close a major shipping lane in international waters IS an aggressive act, and we have a right to respond to it.
As to the sanctions against the Chinese oil company, the US cannot force them to comply with a domestic law, but if they do not follow sanctions imposed and approved by the UN, they can in turn be subject to sanctions themselves. I think you are grossly misrepresenting that.

You mention the US embassy in your post but fail to mention the embassy takeover was a reponse to the 25 years of brutal rule by the Shah...our Puppet....you do know that he US took out their democratically elected President in 1953 and repleced him with the Shah..our puppet??? Sanctions imposed on a country do not work and only hurt civilians.....Sanctions could also be considered an act of war....

The US has troops and military bases in every country that borders Iran, we have warships off their coast, drones over their airspace, CIA agents on the ground, the US has 8000 operational nukes and Israel has over 400......If that overwhelming military advantage does not placate your fears and anxieties over Iran ...than nothing ever will.....Stop being so afraid.

Every poster who labels the US or Israel as aggressors has completely blocked out his mind, that it was Israel who was attacked by Moslems four times and had their butts kicked. If the Gaza Strip and the West Bank had not sent suicide bombers into Israel and attacked it with rockets supplied by Iran, Israel would not be taking land from the Gazanians and the West Bankers and invading Lebanon. You seem to forget it was Iraq who invaded Kuwait and was poised to do the same to Saudi Arabia. Those were civilians who died in the Twin Towers, so don't tell me about innocent anybody until you can justify those deaths by Moslems. For my money any Moslem who doesn't want to die a Moslem can convert to Christianity or Hebrew and die under those banners, either way we would be rid of an Islamist which is not a religion but a political philosophy, much the same as Nazism was.

The United States has been involved in more wars, invasions and occupations since world war 2 than all other countries combined.....we have also overthrown more Govts and installed more brutal dictators than any other country..... So just to name a few ... we supported Saddam Hussein , Osama Bin Laden, Pinochet, The Shah, Manuel Noriega and the list goes on, we have bombed more countries than any other country since world war 2
Currently the US has attacked or invaded the following countries...Yemen < Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Afganistan, Pakistan.....just to name a few over the last decade.....

Hezbollah was formed in 1985 to resist the brutal invasion by the Israelis into Lebanon....not the other way around...... Gaza is being occupied by the Israelis, The west Bank is being occupied by the Israelis and is not Israeli territory....
Yes Iraq invaded Kuwait and the US and coalition drove them out.....However Our subsequent Invasion of Iraq was naked agression against a soveriegn nation that had not threatend the US, nor did they have the ability to attack the US..... it was an Illegal invasion without UN approval as well as a violation of Internaional law......

Did you ever consider that Iran might be defensive because of our actions? I mean we supported the Shah who got away with unspeakable acts to the Iranian people, and we guarded him from prosecution. Later we showed we have no problem invading a sovereign country and removing its leadership. We continue to bully foreign countries to do as we want them to do. No wonder they feel uncomfortable with us and feel they need to be on the defense. I think it's going to take a lot to get Iran to ever trust us again, and threatening military action will not do it. Don't think for a minute China and Russia would not attack us if we invaded Iran. They already have the means to cripple us by attacking our infrastructure. The only thing that holds them back is the fact that it would be economically devastating, but Russia and China will not sit by and watch us go in Iran like we did Iraq. We can get away with strikes if we have to but not an invasion or a full out war. Iran wants to draw us into war as they know that would be the downfall of America.
America lacks the political will and the military capability to invade Iran anytime soon, you also have to consider the re-emergence of Russia as a political force and China's growing influence. The world has moved on since the Iraqi invasion so quite frankly the defensive argument as you've correctly, if unintentionally pointed out doesn't hold water.
The latest information suggests that they haven't decided as to whether they will develop nuclear weapons or not which makes a lie of the purely civilian usage claims. Iran doesn't want a war, it wants to embarrass America without pushing you over the brink.

The Israelis withdrawal has been certified by the UN and yet Hezbollah still have all their weapons, why is this? Why is a group backed by outside Governments being allowed to carry weapons? Could it be that the Lebanese Government didn't have the strength to disarm them?
We could ask Saad Hariri, in 2009 he and the pro Western group won 71 out of a total 128 seats and yet by 2011 Hezbollah and it allies are given 16 out of the 30 seats in the new cabinet, this couldn't have anything to do with them being heavily armed, could it?

Iran does not have nuclear weapons....YET. But they soon will if no one stops them. You haven't answered one fundamental question: WHY does Iran need to stockpile nuclear weapons? And don't tell me they need to defend themselves against attack...no one has attacked Iran since Timberlane (present day Uzbekistan) invaded Iran in the 1300s. And just like the first poster, you ignored the fact that Iran has threatened to close off international waters, and they did not say "only if they are attacked". Iran has told our navy not to enter the strait of Hormuz which are international waters again....or else. They have threatened other nations not to seek other means of obtaining oil...or else. Because the War left Afghanistan war torn, and most of the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen were killed, and then the US abandoned them (no funds, few weapons left, little ammunition, etc.) it was very easy for the 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban supported by Fundamentalist Islamic Iran to massacre the 20,000 to 50,000 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen.

No I feel the same way about Israel being attacked and think that they are living in fear as much as the citizens of Beirut. I don't think nationality is a factor in the fear when innocents are attacked. Innocents are always the victims of stupid religio-political violence... be they Israeli or Lebanese.... or anything else.
I have not personally seen a suicide bombing anywhere and hope I never do. I am only observing what I saw but it would be the same if the roles were reversed.

The Country of Iran has been financing the spilling of blood in Middle Eastern countries other than their own for far too long.....it is now time they spill some of their own so they have a true understanding of what it is like. The Embassy hostage taking was a response to the 1953 overthrow of the democratic government of Iran by teh US so we could steal their oil.

The Shah ruled from 1941 till 1979. The 1953 thing was an attempt to overthrow the Shah who was the ruler. It was called a coup by Mohammad Mosaddegh who was the Prime Minister. So the Shah was the rightful ruler at the time. We didnt try to impose his rule on Iran. Facts are fun.

Various additional controversial policies were enacted, including the banning of the communist Tudeh Party, and a general suppression of political dissent by Iran's intelligence agency, SAVAK. Amnesty International reported that in 1978 Iran had as many as 2,200 political prisoners, a number which multiplied rapidly as a result of the revolution.[citation needed]
Several other factors contributed to strong opposition to the Shah among certain groups within Iran, the most notable of which were the U.S. and UK backed coup d'état against Mosaddegh in 1953, clashes with Islamists, and increased communist activity. By 1979, political unrest had transformed into a revolution which, on 16 January, forced the Shah to leave Iran. Soon thereafter, the Iranian monarchy was formally abolished, and Iran was declared an Islamic republic. Facing likely execution should he return to Iran, he died in exile in Egypt, whose President, Anwar Sadat, had granted him asylum.
In the 1990s and the decade following 2000, the Shah's reputation has staged something of a revival, with many Iranians looking back on his era as a time when Iran was more prosperous[3][4] and the government less oppressive.[5] Journalist Afshin Molavi reports even members of the uneducated poor - traditionally core supporters of the revolution that overthrew the Shah - making remarks such as 'God bless the Shah's soul, the economy was better then;' and finds that "books about the former Shah (even censored ones) sell briskly," while "books of the Rightly Guided Path sit idle."[6]

I personally know several families who left Iran for the States (relocated to a midwest USA city where I used to live) before the Shah went out....and they all stayed here. Nobody held a gun to their heads keeping them from going back to the homeland to be repressed by the almighty Ayatollah.

Most of the people of Iran are probably uninterested in doing anything other than just trying to live peaceful lives as are most of the people of the United States. The problem is oil and the world's dependence on it. Throw in some religion and cultural hatred plus a little nuclear posturing and it's difficult for the rational people of the world to just live and let live.
The problem is the funding of terrorists by the fanatical islamic regime. In the end the innocent always get caught in the cross fire.

Why are we warmongering? I served in the military. I'm not warmongering. I enlisted in the Army at the age of 17 in response to our embassy being taken hostage....hoping we would go kick some azz...but we didn't. Probably because Vietnam was still to fresh a bad memory for our nation at the time. It has been 31 years since I enlisted and I still feel like I have "unfinished" business every time I hear the word "Iran". Their Gov't has done nothing but "Stir the Pot" for all of those 31 years and they will do it for 31 more if they aren't "taken out".

Iran before the Islamic movement took over the country was modern in their lifestyle and much of their thinking. I worked with a woman who had to flee that country after she was nearly stoned to death for refusing the veil. Now all of a sudden we see images of women who are not wearing anything but a scarf? We see Christians and Jews unmolested in this country? Well Well. First the country won't allow anyone in now that sanctions are under way we now see just how modern they are. Ah the media with world leaders do love to mix it up and manipulate public opinion.
With regards to Iran's nuclear power neighboring Muslim countries don't want them to have nuclear bombs either and with good reason for Iran's leaders have delusions of grandeur and expect to be the Caliphate of the Middle East. This will ramp up the problems in the Middle East. Russia and China could care less if these Muslim dominated countries war against each other because after the dust settles they will be the ones in there taking over which has been their agenda all along. I say let them have the ME. They will soon find out just how friendly these people are and how Islam operates with the infidel.
Americans can and should drill elsewhere and should demand the development of infrastructure to push forward clean energy. Enough of the lies it is possible and it is imperative that we show the world what ingenuity and living sustainably means. We can do this we have the talent the factories and the people to do it.
Most importantly we need to put a stop to the Chinese benefiting from our schools and stealing our technology so they can then sell it to us and further cut the American worker off from income.
