10-year-old girl swallowed by crocodile as father watches

MAUMERE, Indonesia -- A 10-year-old girl was swallowed by a crocodile as her father watched helplessly, Indonesian officials said.

The girl, named Juraida, was hunting for turtles with her father and brother in East Nusatenggara province when a giant saltwater crocodile sprang up from a river and pulled her in, The Jakarata Post reported.

“Juraida was seized when she was in about a half-meter of water at the river’s mouth,” Lembata Deputy Regent Viktor Mado Waton said when contacted on Friday, according to the newspaper.

“Her father and brother could only watch helplessly,” Waton said.

Villagers found pieces of her clothing several hours after Thursday's attack but there was no sign of her body.

Last month, a boy was killed by a crocodile in the same river.

Villagers living near the river have reported a loss of livestock in recent weeks as well.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Why post a story like this...trying to make people sad or something?

Yes, this is a sad story. However, on the bright side, that is one less mouth to feed which means more turtle meat for the other members of the family to enjoy.

This is truly sad, but there is something not right about this story. Crocodiles do not like fresh meat and are not going to take a live person and swallow them. They are known to drag prey under and stuff them under a rock or branch under water. They will let the body sit there for a while while the salt water tenderized the meat. I have no doubt that a crocodile would attack and drag away a person, particularly a young girl, but there is no way I buy a crocodile attacking and immediately swallowing the person. Anyone who has ever studied crocodile behavior knows something is wrong with this story.

@ JS in SD: that's probably exactly what happened, but to the untrained eye, the snatch and deathroll would have seemed like the croc ate her right there, when in all actuality he was just killing her, to take her body somewhere to rot for a while. Poor little girl.

JS in SD- Don't know about crocodiles, but I grew up in Miami and we have alligators down in the glades. I know alligators and crocodiles may have different eating patterns, but alligators will eat fresh meat. From what I remember about alligators, they use underwater ledges to store their food if they have had their fill,to hoard it from other alligators or if it is too big to grab chunks off of,then they'll let it soften up. (smack my head - I think I just refuted my own statement)Their teeth may also be different than an crocodiles.Of course the curing thing is cool,so maybe that's because crocs are salt water??

Has anyone considered the possibility that the father may have done this on purpose? Perhaps he took out a life insurance policy on the victim and made her go in the water knowing the danger and the financial reward he could have amassed should his evil scheme come to fruition.

Something to ponder..

BG-1026147 and voiceontheleft - the point that the other posters are trying to make is that this is not an unusual occurrence in Third World countries. Note that nothing was published by this news organization when the young boy was killed in the same river last month. If this had occurred somewhere in the United States, then it is an unusual event. MSNBC is only looking for something to fill its Saturday news quota. This is a tragic event for the family and community involved, but is certainly no less tragic than reports of children dying in Africa from starvation, murdered in drive-by shootings or abused by adults, etc. MSNBC is merely picking and choosing what it wants to sensationalize today. That's what people find annoying.

How did this go from a heartwrenching story to bashing Obama. Being a Canadian, I have a hard time understanding how 50% of your population can potentially vote for someone like Gingrich or Romney, men who are trying to destroy the Middle Class, and give the Rich more tax breaks. Obama may not be perfect, but do you Americans want another 4-8, Bush-like years, where he dissolved Clinton's surplus, and thriving economy? And Gingrich is a hypocrite. How soon we forget how good-old Newt bashed Clinton for his lack of moral authority, even wanting Clinton impeached. Go ask Newt's first two wives about his moral compass, especially what has come to light this past week. But we don't care about his personal life. Then why were the Republicans so worried about Clinton's?

I guess once you go gator, you don't come back. Poor taste, yes I know this, but when the hell will these adults learn not to take appetizers (their kids) to areas where gators are looking for a quick snack.

Maybe they should learn of a newer and safer way in catching turtles. You know, like breeding them in another location so they can sell and eat them minus the gator.

Marebob... the rest of the world is interested in American politics and decisions as we tend to stick our nose in everybody else's business! Your comment is exactly one of the reasons that most of the world hates us.... the Ugly American comes through again!

And parts of Indonesia are beautiful. Unfortunately, most of the people there are extremely poor and will do what they have to do to find food. Instead of lambasting them for this, we should consider that but for the grace of God, we were born Americans! Our "poor" cannot imagine living the way the poor in Indonesia and many other countries live. There are no food stamps, SSI, medicaid, soup kitchens, HUD housing, etc. And there is no birth control either.

Yes, I believe there are quite a few young, selfish, immature brats posting here... but unfortunately, we get a glimpse from these people as to how bad it has really gotten in this country. Some of the posts on these forums have really enlightened me as to the thought processes of some of my fellow Americans and it is scary as hell!

I'm sure that little girl was terrified and I cannot imagine the horror in watching one of your children killed this way. I've lost a son and I can tell you, people the world over love their children... this family is in agony for sure. It is sad that so many of us have no compassion anymore.

        Marlen,

Do you really think a bunch of natives living along an Indian river who have to chase turtles for a living need a sign to tell them the river is full of Crocodiles? And Crocodile repellent? Are you kidding? Don't you understand that in the majority of fatal case's of attack... that by the time you realize "Big toothed water lizard" is there, he's already launched himself out of the water and has you in a death roll... and once he does reaching for an aerosol can is fairly pointless?

And "murder by Crocodile to collect life insurance"? You do understand that they aren't catching the damn turtles for sport don't you? Exactly how much extra money do you think a turtle catching native, living along a crocodile infested Indian river has to put down on a life insurance policy?

Are you intentionally being dense? If not....then God help you, and if so,certainly you can do better than this as an attempt at ridicule! Otherwise you need to chose another subject...one where you may have some semblance of a chance of actually not making a complete fool out of yourself.

Crocodiles are more aggressive in temperament than alligators. There are exceptions, natrually, as everything has, but compared to an alligator, Crocodiles are horrendously belligerent. Alligators tend to shy away from humans unless threatened or fed enough to lose their fear. Or, hungry enough, but humans arent typically seen as prey. Crococdiles attack humans faaaar more frequently, with greater fatal percentages.

An alligator is not being compared to a dog here. Just to reiterate.

It remains that yes, we encroach, but what should really matter is the utilization of safety. This was horribly tragic, and my heart goes to that father, but things can be prevented...

            And your point is?

These people were hunting where there were crocodiles...so why would they be surprised this happened? And someone was surprised how something that big could hunt in such shallow water...if it was that big it was definitely older which meant it had a lot of experience.

I don't know what it's like for these people...maybe the children have to help in the hunt...I wouldn't have let my kids near that, but then again, it's a different world there from mine here.

I am so sorry that this little girl was taken...I can't imagine what her family is going through.

I just hope she died quickly...it had to be horrifying for her.

COmommy, this vine is a lot like driving in traffic, people flipping people off, riding their a$$es, things they would never do if they were face to face with that same person in line at a store. I'm always baffled that when someone reads a comment they don't like, or has something they find to be inaccurate, they respond by saying " hey %$#@*& you're an idiot, go to hell, get your $hit straight, stupid libby, stupid teabagger", it goes on and on. Is it just news reading people, or MSNBC readers, or are that many people really so powerless in their lives that they use the anonymity of the vine to say things they would never say in person. I'm writing so much about this because it used to be an awesome platform to have a discussion and read about what folks from all over the world think, how cool is that!? Until, F you right winger, F you left winger, etc.etc.etc.

It's too bad that we cant have two vines, one for civil, intelligent and opinionated people, of all ages, and one for all the name calling, insulting, "others".

P.S. I'm guilty of letting someone have it if the rip on me, not if I disagree with what they say or think their facts are not accurate.

I hate to tell you people but "voiceontheleft" is absolutely right. Let me tell you something if we had Indonesian or Australian Crocodiles in the U.S south east or gulf coast regions...they'd shut down every damn golf course out there! And you wouldn't be walking down the canals in Florida without a care in the world and sunbathing on the dock!

Crocodiles from those regions make alligators look like pacifists. We do however have Crocodiles... a very limited number of American crocodile who aren't nearly as tempramental and dangerous as those on the other side of the pacific rim or Africa.

Obama sucks badly and is a real danger to the USA, but this article had nothing to do with politics in the USA. I think MSpielman was empathizing with the father and brother, and the poor girl too. Why pick a fight with that?

makemad it is fair to say that most Americans don't approve of a party represented by a lowlife that left his wife dying of cancer for a younger lover. Very few also approve these days no child left behind or outsourcing American jobs to Mejico. I think that in the future your party will be a sad memory in the pages of American history books.

Salt-water crocodiles have sharks beat hands down as the scariest animals around. What a horrible thing to see. I remember some years ago a California professor and his wife were on a nile cruise and while canoeing, the husband got attacked and eaten by a croc - while his screaming wife watched. I couldn't imagine retaining any sanity of you had to see something like that. Nature = scary sometimes.

Don't understand why humans haven't eliminated Crocs and Gators ( other than Zoo's ) from the face of the Earth by now. No need or use for these relics. My heart goes out to the Father and his family.

I'm sure this is not the only croc in the neighborhood. But I suspect when you live in an area where there are dangerous elements all the time - you develop a tolerance. Crocs are part of their world and until the danger exceeds a certain point,it is more dangerous to go after the the croc than to just exercise caution. You never hear of villages going after the man eating tigers until it reaches a report of several deaths.

Why go hunting for a croc? They're big, and powerful, and notoriously hard to kill. Besides, they knew what they signed up for when they built houses near a river full of crocs. Who wants to get eaten going after dozens of crocs that might or might not be the one(s) that ate the kids? They (the crocs) all look alike to me.

                    HShaver,

Really???? I seriously doubt they "built houses" there... they are lucky if they have some tin and cardboard to construct a hut! They built near the river for many reasons... sort of like Americans do! And I've said it before, it's not like these village people in remote areas of Indonesia get there daily dose of the news to warn them of dangers. This sort of thing is spread by worth of mouth which isn't quite as fast as the internet, radio, or TV where you get your news!

descrs - The thread was about whether this dad/villagers should or should not go hunting for crocodiles in retaliation for the child's death. I did not get the impression HShaver was saying the dad should just suck it up since he chose to build near the river, but rather that, for all of the varied reasons he built near the river, you also accept the dangers associated with that location. We buy houses near roads - one of the dangers we accept is that the cars that drive on those roads are potentially dangerous. But you wouldn't outlaw all of the cars from the road by your house. (of course I could be totally off base,HShaver may be saying the dad should just suck it up - problem when speaking for someone else! :)

Then your other child would be standing there watching their father/mother being eaten, too. No human being can kill a saltie with their bare hands. The animal grabbed her and was gone in a split second. There was no time to react or respond, it was over.

Your other kids would starve to death without you. Great decision making. Way to win Parent of the Year Award.

Let's get Mitt Romney in there. The way he made hundreds of millions by buying companies and breaking them up for profit would be wonderful for America! He could just continue to let America slide into the abyss like that other co cksu cker we had between 2000 and 2008!

To those who are saying they would go after the crocodile - it doesn't quite work like that. The crocodile grabs its prey from a bank, takes it in deeper water, and goes into a death roll. There is no prying the jaws apart. You may not even be able to catch up to the croc. They take the prey, they may make one brief reappearance, and they disappear. That father probably saw the croc, had a few seconds to realize what happened, and then it was gone.

Ya Dicer, ya got that right. In the nature flicks those crocks spring out of the water and in a second or two got a big antelope and is draggin it back into the water in the time it takes to blink. G-d bless that little girl.

Surprised he didn't have a machetes though. They seem to wack everything with a machete there. Don't know the feasibility, but if he got a wack or too on da gators head, at least the authorities could identify it and kill it if they saw it again. But sh!t happens in fast motion when it goes down.

Saltwater croc skin is tough. Granted, you could possibly have a machete. If you did own one (and the possibility is low, tools are very expensive and the annual income in Jakarta is below $70) it would bounce off a croc's thick bone skull. It might even break the machete. The skin of the head is like steel plate...not to mention the attack of a saltie is incredibly quick. Sometimes there is no outcry from the victim, one turns and they are gone.

Children are physically smaller in other countries because they have less to eat then children in the US. One can only hope this child was killed with the first crushing bite. Poor little girl.

Those who criticise her family for living close to the river: her ancestors have likely lived there for tens of thousands of years. She lived in a village. No roads, no running water, no indoor toilets.

Jakarta's a Third World country in many areas (outside the cities) where the people live. They live in huts and shacks and can't even afford hygiene products. Deodorant companies market single-use containers to the populace because that's all they can buy. They purchase a single cigarette at a time.

Criticising them for where they have to live, forsooth. One may as well criticise Americans for their own ignorance of geography and sociology.

Well, now, come to think of it, that would be valid, wouldn't it? ;-) ;-D

If we are the strongest creatures on the planet, then why do so many things eat us? Strongest would imply top of the food chain, and it seems like there are plenty of things that find us relatively appetizing, and it seems that, unarmed, there's not a hell of a lot we can do about it when they get a craving for us. Stop being so anthrocentric. It's not our planet exclusively, and we are not the top of the food chain.

I see the croc, who is doing what he does naturally and for logical reasons, however repugnant it might be to us, as less wasteful and much less full of hate and nastiness than you are. The people were in the croc's habitat, children had been attacked and killed crocs there before, and there they went anyway. I am sincerely sorry for the family's loss, but seems to me the croc won here and it was totally predictable.

Stephen, if you believe that humans are the strongest animals you need to take some real biology courses or google or something...we are weak in comparison to many, many animals. Only thing going for us is our supposedly amazing brain, and I don't see us using that very well much of the time. I don't think since you obviously know little about nature or biology you are qualified to judge whether they are "needed" or too big to survive any more or anything to do with evolution...lol.

On the atheist part of your rant I would say you also have no clue what they believe, and that this has nothing to do with politics, corporations, or religion except in your confused brain. Seriously, you don't read much or take many classes on the topics you rant about, do you?

I also think it's interesting you complained about Lydia doing exactly what you did more than once. You wanted all the crocs destroyed for doing nothing wrong, but just acting on instinct, and you weren't very polite to atheists. So before you start talking about other people's behavior how about reading your own posts first? And if you know you are very emotional about things, I suggest taking a moment to read your posts before you post them to see if they make sense or are just ranting from an emotional viewpoint. Of course you have the right to rant, but a bit of checking might help readers take you more seriously if that is your goal. I am not really sure what your goal is.

As an atheist writing only for myself...I do believe in natural law. Humans are the smartest and most capable animals on earth. So I say the people there quit going into the water for turtles and instead go hunting for crocs. I don't know about the other stuff you wrote, it's not easily decipherable.

A croc ought to make quite a meal, though I'm not sure how close to cannibalism I would want to go with it. Once removed is too close imo.

Bunny, it's not guns and knives that make humans a threat, it's our brains and ability to reason and make moral judgements that make us stronger. We are the highest form of life in that we have the ability to choose to do or not do, to act morally or immorally. The rest of the animals have only instinct, no reasoning ability. That puts us on top because we can adapt to our environments much more effectively than other animals. It also gives us great responsibility, a role at which as a whole race we fail miserably. Don't hate the Christians. A lion or Croc would tear you or me, or Bambi, to sheds without regard for our feelings or any sense of whether it was right or good for anything beyond filling its belly or protecting its young by instinct. Christians do a lot of good, and have done great things for our world throughout history, witness Mother Teresa, St Vincent De Paul, St Francis of Assisi, Martin Luther King Jr, Johannes Gutenberg (invented the printing press and used it to print bibles -- significant contribution to the spread of science too), and many others who have been motivated by their faith in God to do great things that have made our world better. Christians have done way more good than evil throughout history, though not in every instance. Don't group us all into a single stereotype like so many do by ethnicity and race.

Meanwhile, in RealityLand where the rest of us live, humans make tasty snacks for crocodillians. (Don't tell JD in SD, he thinks we are never on the menu for some strange reason, so shhhh!)

These giant reptiles hang out in water and predate on animals attracted to it. They're ambush hunters. Whatever creature happens along, they grab it. Sometimes it's a human.

It sounds as if it happened too fast for the father to react. Crocodiles tend to pull their pray underwater as fast as possible so there is a good chance that there was nothing he could do. Very sad event wither way.

just because they live in a 3rd world country doesn't mean they don't value and care for their children. The event probably happened in a split second. Even if he wanted to fight with the croc. he wouldn't have made in time to do anything let alone see it. I believe he would have given his life for his little girl, but you can't fight something you can't see or isn't there anymore.

I think Peridot hit the nail on the head - the dad can not kill that croc, so if he goes after it - he dies and then his other children have no dad and probably no means of support . When you live somewhere that life is hard, you make hard choices so the greater number of your family have a chance to survive.

If he was being eaten by a croc, I wouldn't have a chance an icecube has in he-- of saving him. The dad had more children and probably a wife and property. If he dies, who's gonna care for all that? Use your heads, people.

                                      Mark Wahlberg much?

Self righteous, 'I would have done better by my child if I'd been there,' judgmental, I'm a better father than he was, I love my child more than he did, etc, etc, etc.

Have you never seen a nature documentary? Are you simply ignorant of how rapidly these animals attack and retreat into the water? They're lightning-fast, sometimes the person taken makes no sound, the companion looks over and the other is simply gone with only a ripple in the water to show what happened. Surely Arnold Schwarzenegger would be more sensible than to leap into the sea at this point.

What would you do? Would you truly abandon your other child alone on the riverbank, perhaps to be eaten alive by another saltwater crocodile, to leap into the water and save a child who was already lost? He may only have fallen into the water to drown, still is that a wise choice to chase after the child who is taken and abandon the living son?

You and I live in civilisation. We have running water in our kitchens, vaccines to protect our children from disease, indoor toilets and free public schools where they can be educated. You went to free public school, or you had that option, although it's crystal clear you paid little or no attention in Geography and Biology classes.

No single human being is a match for a saltwater crocodile. I don't care how how much you work out or how big you think your testicles are, even Steve Irwin had a team when he captured these animals and he used ropes and bait and sophisticated cages, and sometimes he or one of his team were injured by them.

This father had at least one more child. He did the smart thing and the wise thing. You would do the foolish thing and your entire family would be wiped out from the planet when you were eaten and your child was also taken on the riverbank. It's not appropriate for me to say that the Darwin Award would come to you, but there are others who might draw conclusions in that area. There is never a single saltwater crocodile in the water. There's always more than one.

If you knew other people and animals were being devoured in that area by giant crocs, wouldn't you keep your kids out of the water unless you organized a watch party around the gathering area? I won't indict their need to gather whatever they needed for food, because these people can't wander down to Jiffy Mart for fresh veggies, BUT there are GIANT freaking crocodiles in the water. Watch out for your kids. What a horrible way to go.

I'm sure the dad was watching out for his kids, but as you said, Mike N, there is no Jiffy mart out there. Either they gather food or starve. Mike N, think over what you just said. This is what is called a catch-22 for the villagers - - either way they don't win.

                                        Mike,

I would venture to guess that most of the villagers in that area still know nothing about this! They get their "news" by word of mouth. It's not like they can read the news on the internet every day or even turn on their TV's in their huts with no electricity! Think of the location where this occurred... it didn't happen in New Orleans where news of something like this would be spread across the internet, the news, cell phone messages, etc. We must not judge situations we know nothing about.

To watch for what, Mike? When they're seen it's too late to react. These animals are ambush predators. They lurk in the water, attack and kill and then you know they are there.

Does no one else ever watch nature documentaries? Once they have hold of one, it's too late then. They attack rapidly. They are not slow.

They attack so rapidly it requires high-speed cameras AND film to be able to see them take their prey.

Why doesn't anyone else seem to be aware of this? Have IQs in the US dropped sharply since one went to school? Are people here truly that uninformed about animal behaviour? I'm in Marine Biology, this isn't even my field, and I'm aware of this fact. How can people not know this about these animals?

Hey Peridot......don't get your Marine Biology panties in a bunch. No, I don't study freaking crocodiles but I do know they are huge and fast and deadly, and I have decent IQ notwithstanding the fact that I don't read any crocodile-fact-of-the-day website you geek. Now if the mainstream media got word of attacks on precious livestock and children in that area, then I would damn sure assume the VILLAGERS told them, because they damn sure aren't living there with their laptops and press passes. HENCE, the villagers probably knew giant crocs were prevalent, HENCE it would make sense to set a perimeter if you are going to let your children gather in the water. By comparison, If I'm walking around in a big bad American inner city, I don't tell my daughter to walk up ahead near that alley in case there's a mugger there. So,I stand by my point. They should watch a perimeter or keep the kiddies close.

This story does sound a little peculiar, why is this man's children there in the first place? I understand the necessity to eat and not starve, but his children were supposed to be kept safe at all times. That is a parents responsibility!!! I am sure this incident will haunt this father for the rest of his life, as it should!

Don't make the mistake of thinking alligators and crocodiles are the same. There is a reason you read about people surviving alligator attacks. I can only recall one story of someone surviving a crocodile attack, and that was an expert who was taken from her canoe by a Nile crocodile, not a salty.

It is likely the reason the Father could do nothing is that the crocodile and his daughter disapeared that fast. There was nothing there but water.

Saltwater crocs and Nile crocs are different as well. Salties are the worst, the most aggressive of the crocodilians.

Oh, and guess what? Alligators can jump, too. We have one here in THE SAINT AUGUSTINE ALLIGATOR FARM. His name? Jumper. More than one will occasionally jump up to be fed. Most of the time they don't, they're just lazy.

JDinSD, before you deny it, come on down to FL and watch it. Happens every day at feeding time. Or call them, they answer questions on the telephone. You needn't believe a person who has seen it again and again.

Okay... first off, it said the boy was killed in the same river, not necessarily the same area of the river.

Second, there probably was very little he could have done. Crocodiles are extremely powerful and extraordinarily fast in the water. Unless he was standing right next to her (it doesn't say), the croc was probably already out of reach before he blinked. Add on top of that the fact that it was probably a surprise attack and it might've taken him a moment to let what was happening sink in.

The jokes by some of the lesser intelligent posters are what the world expects from such people.

It was shallow where she was standing but it was likely much deeper near by - crocs are strong, fast, and brutal. It would take seconds to drag a child to deeper water and underneath.

I would gather up my buddies with as much artillery, weapons, spears, etc as I could find and go on a hunt for some crocs. Nothing less than extinction for that species in that part of the river. I'd also be hanging treble hook every 15 feet along the river and annihilate them.

Will that bring the girl back? No. But it would make me feel better.

If this had happened to an adult, like marlen101917 for example, that would be bad too, but certainly not as depressing as the fact that it was a little 10 year old girl that was out have a good time.

Why is it so amazing the water was shallow? Estuaries are noted for having poor visibility, ie, being muddy and cloudy. Crocodiles are well-camouflaged and can lie flat in less than half a meter of water. Millions of years of evolution have made it so.

Here's another one for you: most shark bite incidents take place in less than 1-2 meters of water. It takes less than a meter of water to float the largest bull shark and they can bite, take you out to sea, and kill you in an instant. They hunt shallow water and easily tolerate fresh water.

There were bull sharks in that water, too. They are pervasive, but fewer in numbers now than once they were.

She was not out to have a good time, she was gathering food for the family to eat but instead became food for the crocodile, no pun intended. The father needs to be charged with manslaughter, child endangerment, neglect, child abuse and a host of other crimes just for allowing his children to be in the water where crocodiles live.

When the lion was killed, there was public outrage and indignation voiced for the dead lion but not a peep of sympathy or compassion for the woman or her family. All this from the lefties who claim to have cornered the market on tolerance and compassion. When I go into the hills I do not go looking for trouble or violence, but if something, man or beast, offers me either, I will return it in spades. Save the sympathy and compassion for a being that has the capacity to understand those emotions.

By your logic, because saltwater crocodiles, by nature, are large animals, they should be killed by man? Too big for today's ecosystem? You mean the one the people were walking into looking to collect turtles from? Most likely, they were turtles to be illegally exported.

Here's an idea- since humans are the ones that DO NOT act on instinct, stay out of rivers that are habitat for crocodiles, particularly with children, and you won't have stories like this. But God forbid, we impugn anyone's civil right to do whatever they want, rather than respect the fact that there are animals that are bigger predators than we are out there.

The father had to know there were crocs in the area...yet he allows his child to get in the water? That's as bad as you letting your children go swimming in Australian waters where there are all the recent shark attacks.

The croc was doing some thing natural..but either the people in that area need to either kill it and feed everyone, or stay away from it so no one else gets killed.

When someone is eaten by a shark in Malibu where tourists go: they go out and kill 10 with no idea if they got the right one. Just so the tourists feel better and don't change their vacation plans. Now in a poor Country like that, how do you propose they get the equipment to target that one beast?

The answer is you don't. There's no money, nor tourists there. You teach these people to train their palate for Alligators/crocs (tastes like chicken) rather than turtles. And you don't worry about getting the offender and try him and execute him. You kill them all. They breed plentifully and could feed a lot of hungry people. and be an on going food source. and if they run out...would that be so bad?????

                                                                        #19.2 - Sat Jan 21, 2012 9:07 PM EST

You go try to kill a croc or t wo and tell me how successful you are before bashing people's decisions, especially the decision not to kill the crocs in the river. They are big, mean, and smart, and very destructive to life and property if provoked. You ain't seen nothing yet. Wait until a big group of men who never caught or killed a croc in their life try to do that.

Are you dreaming the hunting of 10 Great White Sharks or did you make it up of whole cloth? In other words, you've been caught out.

When a surfer's been in a shark bite incident at Malibu, signs are posted that the beaches are closed. That's all that happens. Surfers routinely ignore these signs and they take whatever happens to them on their own responsibility.

There's catch, tag and live release of White Sharks that goes on anually by an international team of researchers. There's an ap for your Smartphone in which you can follow the satellite tracking of the sharks. The Aussies have a tagging research team as well.

An Oregon fisherman was fined $299 for illegally keeping a White Shark he caught last year. Appallingly not enough of a fine if you ask me. Two Aussies were fined $15,000 pounds for killing a White Shark last year and that's more appropriate. These animals don't reproduce often and it takes a long time for them to achieve maturity. We don't know enough about their reproduction to say how many young a female gives birth to in her lifetime, but studies are underway now.

In Indonesia, I would guess that a criminal investigation would not take place in a remote region, where the locals make up their rules and laws as they go along.

They were hunting turtles for a reason and i doubt it was to hang it on a wall for bragging rights. Shows how much more advanced your thinking process is...

Bravo! But I think as a civilized Country we should supply the tools and offer some training in catching these nasty beasts and eating them instead of turtles. If my man could kill and round up a croc/ alligator and bring it home for dinner.....that would be an afrodisiac for me. And that is usually why a critter that are not as sensible to hunt are sought after.

This article is about a horrible situation where an innocent girl got eaten by a crocodile right in front of her Father and Brother. This is not a political article.
