Til death do us part: Marriage to dead girlfriend draws mixed reaction

Chadil Deffy posted photos of his dead bride on Facebook.

Hopeless romantic or macabre publicity hound?

A Thai television director’s decision to marry his dead girlfriend and post photos and video of the event to Facebook and YouTube is drawing mixed reaction from the public.

Chadil Deffy, also known as Deff Yingyuen, married his girlfriend of 10 years, Sarinya “Anne” Kamsook, early this month as she lay in a coffin in a wedding-cum-funeral at a temple in Surin Province, the Pattaya Daily News reported.

During the ceremony, the 28-year-old groom, wearing a black tuxedo, placed a ring on the finger of his late girlfriend, whose body was lying on a raised platform, dressed in a white bridal dress.

He put photos of himself and his dead bride on his personal Facebook page under an album titled "Corpse Bride." He also uploaded a video to YouTube.

The couple met while studying at Eastern Asia University 10 years ago and had planned to get married for a while but Kamsook died in a car accident on Jan. 3, according to media reports. She was 29.

A friend of Deffy, Onsiri Pravattiyagul, wrote in an opinion column this week in The Bangkok Post:

The "wedding" was his attempt to right a wrong, however belated the gesture might have been.

As expected, the initial public reaction was an outpouring of sympathy for the "groom" and a wave of sentimental remarks. The romantically inclined were moved by this expression of "true love," however unconventional. It seemed to hit a nerve with many people. The offline media picked up on the buzz, too, and went to town with the story. Chadil found himself under a spotlight, experiencing an unexpected 15 minutes of fame.

Also as expected, within days, the backlash began — and it wasn't at all kind. In a heartbeat, Chadil went from being viewed as a hopeless romantic to being vilified as a publicity-hungry opportunist.

Pravattiyagul said Deffy was heartbroken and “wasn't thinking about the possibility of fame when he decided to put a ring on her cold finger. He merely wanted to make things right, however small or inadequate the gesture might seem.”

I am not judging the man. His motives may be unconventional, but so be it. However, the concept of marrying someone who did not agree (she didn't say "I do") is not possible.

That's the weirdest thing I've read all day, and I'm very grateful for that.

I agree. I would post this under 'hopelessly romantic', a symbolic act, and not one to be conjured up with twisted images of consummation of necrophilia. After all 'sleeping beauty' is one of those tales in where a prince kisses a corpse in a glass coffin, although he obviously had no history with her... and how many heart-broken mothers or grieving lovers refuse to immediately let go of their loved ones, crying, holding, hugging and kissing on them... in the minutes, hours, even days after their death.

Those who have never known true love or are quick to judge other cultures may cling to the clinically-macabre title of the article, but the truth seems rather sentimental...

Now, on the other hand, if this 'adoration' went any further... and I had a friend living in a very old (haunted) house, whose first owner, a doctor, was reportedly keeping his mummified wife in a coffin... now that's where it get's seriously creepy!

Kinda sick, kinda sweet, kinda sad, kinda unsure why he'd post pictures of this anywhere, but to each their own. Ultimately, he's expressing his love for this woman in the only way he can since she's passed and there's really nothing wrong with that.

Smeagol - Snow White was assumed dead and placed in a glass coffins by the 7 dwarfs (not Sleeping Beauty). If the guy weren't a television director who posted the photos and video of the event to Facebook and YouTube I would say devoted even in death. But btwn his advertising it and the fact that he's in entertainment business, his actions are tainted w/ an unbecoming degree of publicity.

and post photos and video of the event to Facebook and YouTube is drawing mixed reaction from the public.

And yet he was surprised about the "public backlash". Doing weird or different things is one thing. To broadcast and make it public is what makes this guy STRANGE...and possibly seeking fame or attention. After all he is a TV director.

10 years. For 10 years this man loved this woman, yet never took the plunge. Then she died, and he's finally trying to pick up the pieces of a love and existence he didn't fully cherish until it was too late. I'm sure if people lived through this scenario, the schadenfreude that my fellow humans are displaying would be quieted quickly. Afterall, it's freaky until it happens to us. Then suddenly we want sympathy for the tragedy in our lives, when we wouldn't afford it to anyone else.

So much for the sanctity of marriage....

Straight people marrying the dead

And you have a problem with Gay marriage?

Did the corpse consent? Nah

Did it say I do? Nope

Can they have kids? Hope Not

But your average gay couple that gets married, can do those things

REALLY "Frankly True", have kids?

"But your average gay couple that gets married, can do those things"

You mean a GAY couple can raise children conceived by a STRAIGHT couple (or lesbian surrogate I guess, sperm still required).

Gay, dead, it's all sick and wrong. LLLLLLMMMMMAAAAAAOOOO!!!!!

since when does marriage have to do with commitment oh that could be your blood diamond thinking that marriage actually makes a difference about how you feel about your partner. How many deaths of famous people are advertised on tv and in the media where hundreds of thousands show up to a funeral to pay the respects to the dead how is that any different. Obviously they were commited to each other for 10 years. How many people actually keep the ashes of people in Urns in their house. People who also die daily make the news after their death does that mean the people putting them on the tv in the media are sick because it is basically the same thing advertising the death of someone. All marriage does is help to keep the poor people mining diamonds poor, and the rich white boys rich.

@Frankly True. Gay couples may be able to say I do...but they can't have babies...I'm not sure what you made in Biology, but I assure you gay couples CAN NOT have babies. They can adopt. They can go through a surrogate, but they can not procreate. With that said. I happen to agree with the intent of your message. I still don't believe there should be a law on the books allowing it. They should go through a church or a judge that will marry them. If they have one of those two willing to marry them then it should be good enough for all.

Sorry but I am as hopelessly romantic as the next person ( I would hope so as the author of 14 romance novels), however, this woman looks far to preserved to be a deceased anything. In their world where food and water is scarce, I find it hard to believe she was kept so remarkable maintained just for this. I am inclined to go with Jack Mayhofer, There is the rotten smell (no pun intended) of a facebook stunt. I looked through his profile, for someone so in love with her, he has only two pics of her, and both are of her deceased. And if this was simply in the vein that he wanted to right a wrong, that was between, her, him and their families. Putting that on Facebook is a way to attract attention to a budding director and nothing more. Didn't they also say he had also been with her for ten years previous to this? He had more than enough opportunity, this is bull sorry.

Sick and hurtful is what I think of most of you. My husband/boyfriend of 15 years died @ the age of 39 from a fatal heart attack-3.5 hrs he lay in agony knowing he was going to die. I was so distraught, I climbed into his coffin @ his funeral. My mother had to slap me in the face and take me outside. That was in 2006, I still miss him every day all day long and so do our children! I agree he was wrong to air his woes publicly for all the world to view but people do weird things when they are in Emotional Mind! Cut him and all the world a little slack. Like you're perfect and NEVER have done anything stupid!!!

gamer4life: I think what recklesscoot was meant is if it was just to right a wrong then why did the man who lost his girlfriend make a public display of it? It's not like Chadil Deffy tried to do it privately then the media got wind of it and reported it. He decided to do it very publicly. If you wanted to just right a wrong to settle your conscious or try to do right by someone even after they've gone would you feel the need to make a large public display of it not just on one of the biggest social media outlets (Facebook) but You Tube as well? If Chadil Deffy was seriously only trying to do right by her he could have easily done so without the publicity. It seems he was purposely looking for the attention because HE reported it instead of the other way around. I haven't read very many comments so I'm probably just repeating what a bunch of others have stated so apologies for that. I'm new here.

Also: If he didn't make his video "private" on You Tube then msn can post it here all they like. (You Tube's TOS explains it further) It benefits Chadil Deffy in the form of free publicity. HE can make money off of his video on You Tube as well.

Wow, all the people who are upset about his not doing this privately sure are having fun sticking their noses into this article, watching the videos, commenting, etc. The media is only as prolific as the audience lets it be. It's very Petunia Dursleyish of everyone to bash this guy and complain about all the publicity they're giving him.

That being said, maybe the couple had talked about having a photographer and someone to make a video of their wedding. He could just be following through with their plans. My friend plastered the web with her boring wedding videos and pics, but nobody cared because there was nothing unusual about it.

We don't know this guy or anything about their relationship so we can't really criticize him for how he handles his grief.

Ok Berecca, so when do we get to see the pics of your next dead relatives funeral? Why not, perhaps this person was a celebrity and it would be everyday for them? Taking her pics and plastering them on the web of her dead in any connotation is wrong. Where was her consent form showing she allowed this?

I agree that what he did with the publicity was wrong. He should have kept it private. If he did it for fame (Which I am sure he did), then yes, I agree it is wrong to go about it that way. But if he did love her, my whole point of my post was just to say, that if they had wanted to get married, what was wrong with actually getting married after her accident?

Right a wrong? it took ten years to decide he loved her enough to marry her? Come on people, get a grip. This is a slap in the face to all of us who truly love our spouses. He did it for publicity plain and simple. If he had done it strictly for love he would not have posted the video on Facebook/Youtube. Is this how low our society has dipped? It is sad however. She loses her life in a tragic accident and then this sick pos makes money from her death. Feel sadness for her. Not for this lamer.

With you, perhaps. That means little to to those of us with compassion.

Compassion is nice but come on, this was a publicity stunt. He's in entertainment and he put it on facebook and youtube but none of this seems suspicious in relation to his motives?

Peridot are you compassionate or gullible or a sap. The story would be sad if he didn't make a show of his love for this poor woman and post her dead body on you tube for everyone to gawk at. The title Corpse Bride, tell me do you find that romantic and sweet? I bet you it brought tears to you eyes didn't it.

So do most others who upload videos to Utube. We live in an age where people share private crap that should be kept private all the time!! It's like keeping a diary of ones life for all to see!

Well, now. Did you watch the video, Sosad? Were you unable to resist?

I feel compassion for them, yet I didn't watch the video. I knew it would be distressing. Did you watch it? Did it disgust you? Is that what's really upsetting you about all this?

I could tell enough of the story from him holding her hand that Deff loved Anne dearly. That was enough of the story for me.

To all you people complaining that they should have gotten married before now: really? You're damning the both of them for not being clairvoyant. That's Monday morning quarterbacking. Had they married young, had kids and were he now a single father unable to support them without a mum, you'd all be damning him for that. What would you do differently in your lives if you could see the future? Don't tell me nothing, everyone has some regrets. Everyone.

Remember this: Not even God can change the past.

None of us are given more than one day to live at a time. It's sad that this couple weren't able to marry while Anne was alive. Deff tried to honour both their wishes by creating a new ceremony before the usual funeral ritual, whatever that is there. Was he right or wrong in this? Who are we to judge him?

A lovely young woman has died. A young man mourns her in his special way. As a director of films Deff has memorialised Anne forever. There are as many ways to create memories as there are people in this world. There are 7 billions of humans on this planet today. That means there are 7 billion ways to remember the dead people we have loved.

In the United States of America, many people claim to respect human life and other people, but there's little evidence here. One wonders how many of you will be remembered as well or as long.

If the moments everyone all over the world spent watching the video were to be added together, they might add up to a normal lifespan for Anne.

Perhaps that's the true gift Deff was offering to Anne by posting this video. If that was what he meant to do, then perhaps I should add my offering to the rest by watching the video myself, giving my moments to Anne to increase her gift from her spouse.

I must consider this. I dislike weeping and I know this will make me weep.

I didnt watch the video Peridot cause I wasnt goint to waste the three mins to figure out its bull spit. Either they have incredible undertakers there, or she is no more dead than you or I. This woman is to remarkable preserved for any of this to be true. The title of his pic album alone, and lack of any pic of her alive in his fb says this is all crap. I love my husband, I cant imagine calling him my dead groom and plastering pics of FB, and in ten years I think I can scrounge up a alive pic to put on my FB. Its all crap.

I can understand that he is keeping his promise to marry her because he loves her still... Totally unusual but totally hopeless romantic.....

He wanted to share his intentions.... some people are more open the others....that's all....

Anyways it is his life and her family did not object so who am I to say anything negative ?

He's posting pictures on Facebook under the title Corpse Bride. I would go for macabre publicity hound. It's a sad story to be sure but what he's doing now, going public with it, uploading a video to YouTube, and using a less then loving title, seems more to me like he wants the attention and likes the shock value.

If I had to right this wrong, I think instead of marring a corps I would have opted for something like getting married in spirit. A blessing if you will of my life with a loved one that got cut short. I also think I would have kept it private, there is no need for Facebook and Youtube to be in the mix.

QE137 - I hope that you mean "corpse". It might be difficult to marry an entire corps of anything, whether Army corps, press corps, etc.

The story: creepy and weird, and IMO, solely a publicity stunt. Regarding the "corp" comment, marrying a corp is like marrying a troop. But then why do we use the word "troop" to define a single member of a unit? As in "15,000 troops deployed." It should be "15,000 soldiers deployed" and "15 troops" to define how many units. Look it up, quite frustrating for grammatically correct English users.

The fact that he uploaded the video and called it Corpse Bride is very disrespectful. I actually felt very sorry for him until I read that, I can see why alot of people changed their first impression of him.
