Report: Amanda Knox 'loves Italy' and might return

Amanda Knox, left, is comforted by her sister, Deanna Knox, during a news conference shortly after her return to the US on Oct. 4, 2011, in Seattle.

Amanda Knox "loves Italy" and would like to return despite having spent four years in a prison there before a murder conviction was overturned last year, her lawyer reportedly said.

The 24-year-old may go back to Italy as early as September because her parents are charged with slandering the Perugia police, according to an ABC News report, citing the Italian news service ANSA.

Carlo Dalla Vedova, one of Knox's lawyers, told ANSA that Knox "loves Italy and likes Perugia" and would like to return to the country "as a tourist, but if necessary she will return to testify in the trials against her parents," ABC News said.

Knox's mother and father face a prison sentence if found guilty of slandering police officers in a 2009 interview with London's Sunday Times newspaper in which they alleged their daughter was physically abused and threatened while being questioned.

Knox spent four years of a 26-year sentence in a Perugia prison on charges that she killed her British roommate Meredith Kercher.

Her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was also convicted. A third person, Rudy Guede, was convicted of taking part in the murder in a separate trial.

The Italian appeals court that overturned the murder conviction of American student Amanda Knox is now explaining its ruling in a newly-released report. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

Knox and Sollecito were cleared of the murder last year, but Knox was convicted of a separate charge of slandering her former boss by saying he was involved in the murder.

She would have to be an idiot to return. There are elements of the police there that would happily trump up some new charges against her and arrest her again. To return to Italy is literally asking for trouble. I also hope that the US government will refuse any extradition requests against her parents on this slander charge. It is just a case of the police trying to do whatever they can to save face in the aftermath of their completely botched investigation into the murder of Amanda Knox's roommate. I certainly hope her parents are not dumb enough to go to Italy voluntarily with these charges pending. If Knox or her parents do return to Italy and are arrested I hope that the US government will let them deal with it on their own. I would hate to see any taxpayer money wasted trying to get them back if they make the stupid decision to return to a country where they have had such legal problems in the past.

I'm pretty sure they have her passport blocked at customs and won't be allowed to enter even if she wanted to be a foolish person and try. Plenty of other places that are just as pretty and much cheeper to vacation at then Italy. I'll be shocked to see them even allow testimony from Amanda at her parents trials.

JS iN SD.....you sound like an expert in Italian law and we thank you for your insights on what will happen if poor little Amanda ever sets foot there again.....only advice I would have for Amanda is as follows: if you go back, make sure you don't do any drugs, get so wasted you have no clue what happened the night before and, if at all possible, don't commit any crimes. Stick to these 3 basic rules and I bet those awful Italians will leave you alone.

If she goes back and gets rearrested, I will have no sympathy for her. It would be an idiotic action. The whole arrest and trial was a scamm. They would do it again to save face.

she is taking the advise of her parents attorney, saying Italian people and places are great; the parents each face years in prison(they are already broke from paying for her defence), they are hoping that the Italian court, dismisses her parents charges; if Italy asks for extradition the U.S. State department will grant it, due to treaty obligations; it is a crime in Italy to question the tactics of the police, even if proved true as it was at her trial. Catch 22.

If Foxy Knoxy goes back to Italy, she is bucatoddy (sp ?) . They will watch her like a hawk and eventually they will catch her infringing the law, even if it is a very obscure law which has not been enforced for generations, and then they will throw the book at her. Even if she eventually wins that one in court as she won this last one in court it will cost her years as it did before.

Leslie in MI - I think Italy wants her back - in prison. While I feel pity for Amanda - there gotta be some truth in the murder case that she was in. She went as an exchange foreign student and look what she got involved - drug, alcohol and Italian sex and a mystery murder for sex, and she paid dearly for it. Cheers!

The botton line is - a young Bristish female roommate got killed and think about her parents' loss. After doing drugs, alcohol and sex, Amanda got her lfie back (even after 4 years of jail, which was minimal). They let her go only on the grounds of the US govenment intervention -otherwise she will still be in jail, which would have taught her a little more lession on how to behave when you are on a foreign land...

She found out she is miserable. She may actually have a conscience after all and return to the scene of the crime....to see her boyfriend and try their stunts again. I think his family will keep that guy away from her at any cost.....they make a bad combo.

Guess what? Most of Seattle didn't want her back, either. We're still trying to find a way to get rid of her again...so this article is actually a good sign, though the comments are depressing. She's a spoiled little scumbag and liar at absolute best, and the pity party I'm hearing from my own fellow Americans seems to conveniently leave out the fact that she brought her whole ordeal upon herself by LYING, OVER AND OVER AND OVER, TO THE POLICE in the context of a MURDER investigation...how freaking stupid can you be?! Well guess what? When you lie repeatedly to the police, they tend to have a hard time believing you have nothing to hide. The only thing more egregious than having to see this spoiled, extremely ugly little runt come back to my city to a parade of sympathy and embarrassing butt-kissing is getting to read and hear all the laughably hypocritical comments about Italy’s justice system from other Americans. Right…because in the US, we don’t imprison innocent people for crimes they didn’t commit. We also don’t have overzealous cops who lie and manipulate evidence to support their preferred conclusions, nor do we have egomaniacal prosecutors who employ those same tactics in the courts rather than the interrogation room. Because none of that happens in the USA, right? You people are so hypocritical I am actually embarrassed to share even so much as a land mass with you.

She barely spoke the language and then zeroed in on her and concocted this story of smoking POT and then going on a wild sex binge/orgy and killing a non-participant - ridiculous.

Four years ago she went into a Police station to help the police find the killer of Kercher never dreaming she would be the lead suspect, be arrested and convicted in a foreign country? huh? Glad to have Amanda back on US soil. She needs to stay here.

I don't understand. Why would her parents go there and risk being imprisoned?

As American citizens, given that they didn't even break the law by American standards, can they be forced to go to Italy and stand trial?

This Amanda Knox case is the weirdest thing from the start. I still have no idea whether or not she is guilty. Her early behavior was so bizarre that I tend to disbelieve her and to think her late, more appropriate behavior, was coached. But I guess we'll never know. Can't imagine why her parents would be willing to put themselves at the mercy of a system that tried to railroad her daughter -- assuming that's what really happened.

Yes they can and should be extradited if Italy requests it. Italy is a NATO partner and one of our allies. If the U.S. government blocks extradition, then we are telling the world that they cannot handle their own judiciary system correctly, how very elitist of us. Interpol can legally take them as with any other criminal/suspect the discover in most countries. Who says they are innocent? I believe political pressure was exerted in the case of ms Knox. Take note: Italy is NOT America.

I don't get how Italy can press charges against the parent for an act that occurred on British soil unless Italy thinks their jurisdiction extends around the world. I cannot imagine that floating in international law. The problem is that if the parents blow off the Italian courts, Italy can issue an International Arrest Warrant and any country that honors that warrant can pick up the parents when they enter a country. That pretty much makes them a prisoner of US soil. They cannot travel to Canada, Mexico, Aruba etc without risking arrest and extradition to Italy.

Hell I will say it, the Italian cops beat that girl, falsified evidence and pressed false charges against the girl and her family. Come and get me!

subdoc ----- Why should Knoxes' parents be extradicted to Italy? In any case, why hasn't Roman Polanski been extradicted to the United States. Granted, we are talking about two different countries here, three if you count the US, but why should extradiction treaties be enforced by the US, but unenforcable by other countries.

We, the U.S., just had suspected software pirates arrested and detained in New Zealand for "allegedly" breaking our laws and some of you are doubting Italy's jurisdiction to charge someone in another country? What makes us so special that we can enforce our laws in other countries but other nations are not allowed?

As far as the U.S. being elitist, that's what we do all the time, why do you think we are so "popular" in the world? We told Canada they had to crack down on marijuana, they cracked down, we told Iraq it needed democracy, we forced it down their throats, we told New Zealand to arrest those guys for piracy, they did it. Basically many of the things we bi**h about other nations doing, we do the same things. Before we can actually lead the world it might be a good idea to stop treating other nations like they were bad children.

      #3.5 - Wed Jan 25, 2012 12:50 PM EST

If the U.S. government blocks extradition, then we are telling the world that they cannot handle their own judiciary system correctly, how very elitist of us.

And in this case, that elitism is entirely justified. We're not talking about real crime, here. They didn't rob someone. They made statements, statements which they probably believed to be true -- statements which might very well be true. The story doesn't say whether this is a criminal or civil proceeding, but at this point nothing would surprise me.

I don't believe America should respect the authority of any foreign laws which contradict the fundamental rights our country grants us. One of those is freedom of speech.

@ jerri-1; There is no doubt she was innocent. Granted, her behavior may have been either bizzare or coached, but that is not what cleared her. It was the DNA evidence, or lack thereof, which was hidden by the prosecution and the police. This is done all the time, all over the world apparently. I was just reading about the man in Illinois imprisoned for 16 years for murder before he was found to be innocent. During his trial 16 years ago, the REAL murderer came forward and confessed, but the police and the prosecution hid that because they had already falsified a case against this innocent guy. Just like the Italian prosecution and their police hid the fact that the DNA evidence did not implicate Amanda. It took international pressure (thankfully) to unseal that evidence so that impartial experts could examine it, otherwise Amanda would still be wrongfully imprisoned.

And on point to this story, yes, she'd have to be an idiot to go back there. That prosecutor was already in hot water for falsifying evidence in a previous Italian case, and I'm sure would like nothing more than to somehow, some way, try to vindicate himself in this extreme worldwide embarrassment, no matter what it would take. The police as well. And if Amanda thinks there's no way they could make that happen, then yes, she is super naive.

There is no way in hell that she or her parents should ever return to Italy for any reason. Her parents committed no violent crimes or did anything physical to harm anyone, so there's no way the US would extradite them to return to face charges of slander. Tell the Italians thanks but no thanks and move on with your lives. As hard as the US worked to get Knox home, she should be overly-grateful and return the favor by keeping her white ass at home. There are endless choices of other countries to visit if she's travel-hungry, and if she misses Italy that much, order a damn pizza.

Yes, but it was reduced to just a few years. The man is clearly guilty. He even tried to escape to Germany - ran away! The Italian justice system is exceedingly peculiar and retarded to have sentenced this guilty man to a sentence less then the two innocent ones were sentenced to, and then to cut that smaller sentence in half! Makes NO sense at all! Who was paid off, how, and why?? As a minimum, it is clear that the warped and misguided prosecutor has a vendetta against Americans!

Great another idiot to embarrass America on the world stage. Is she going to have a weird orgy again? And why is the media and MSNBC bringing it up again?

The Appeals Judge has reinforced everything the parents are being charged with. They stated their opinions, which have now been confirmed correct! The charges should be dropped immediately! If they pursue the trumped-up charges, let them be thoroughly rejected and repudiated by a total rejection of any extradition request.

Neither Amanda or her parents should ever set foot in Italy again. Italy has forfeited the right to have them come and spend their money there. Their heavy-handed tactics have caused many to change their minds about going to Italy. Perhaps they do not care! There are other beautiful countries in Europe, such as Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Holland, France, Spain, Portugal, all of Scandinavia, etc. Poland is truly delightful, and not so expensive either. Amanda would have never spent four years in prison in any of these nations, as they generally have due process and objective justice systems, which Italy has proved they do NOT!

Hopefully, I have slandered your justice system, Italy, or at least the police interrogation practices. Now, try and get me there! File all the charges you wish! It will never happen! I have freedom of speech, and am proud of it!!
