I have a hard time arguing for native peoples like the aboriginals and native Americans being better off uneducated and uncivilized, in an undeveloped country. Aboriginal rights should include exactly the same rights as all Australians have, and not one thing more. The best thing that ever happens to a society is education, civilization and development. If you are reading this then you have the benefit of all three.

What rights do they not have?

Free and secure in your native country, albeit "backward" (by white-anglosaxon definition) or "blessed" to be repressed in an "educated" society, spit upon, discriminated against and denied human rights ...

Bravo, the mistake that our government and apparently the Australian government has made is when these people's were concurred tht they were not immediately changed into citizens of that government instead of being left as part of the old Nation. The Indian reservations should have been demolished and the people made the same citizen as any one else. I can say that because my ancestors as well as my wife's ancestry are Cherokee. because of the recognition of the Cherokee Nation, Apaches etc they live in poverty instead of become regular members of society.

Arms dealers selling to the uneducated to keep wars going so that sales stay high. Endangered species being sold on the black market just for money. Seeing this from from the other side of the Pacific I can only say, Australians and Americans have been such good friends over the years. Our countries are very similar...our freedoms, our national goals, and also our historical mistakes. The images of a leader in danger, one elected by a free people, is haunting. Let's not forget, Australia, unlike so many other countries in the world, is a good place populated by a good people.

ihateliberals - I disagree that Native Americans should have been forced to assimilate into general population, and I'm part Cherokee as well. For one thing - many wanted to follow the old ways... for them being poor was not as bad as losing their identity. And even those tribes that wanted to be assimilated (like some Cherokee bands) were always treated like dirt by the whites.

Steve - while your statement might be true it does not settle the issue of fair treatment. If you want to civilize and bring the indigenous people into modern society do so with equal rights, fairness and recognition of their cultural rights. If they want to kill each other let them.

In America we by treaty gave back the Black Hills to the Indians but then took it back as soon as gold was found and in the process killed them for it....remember Custer. Similar things happened throughout America. Give them their land and leave them alone.

I really believe people need to read the books that are not readily at your finger tips. Remember history is some one else's interpretation of events and are at times slighted depending on who will benefit. So its usually best to really seek out a few "historical" accounts to get an overall picture. As for the Australians history tells of the host country England sending its unwanted to a continent to fend for themselves and to be problems for others. The fact that the original native people have to assimilate to a bunch of rapist, murderers, thieves and political criminals is hilarious. Its amazing how people of anglo-saxon heritage support their right to be superior to any other race of ppl especially when they want to take it over. Dear Mr/Ms ihatliberals. I really doubt you are Cherokee. If you were you would know the Cherokee attempted to do the exact things you suggest. They attempted to emulate the white man. Read the history. But of course it didn't matter because the white man didn't care what the Cherokee did. They wanted their land.

Also, attempting to make them equal to the people who came to take their land would have been equally pointless. The white people didn't want any native peoples to be equal. That would have prevented them from taking anything they wanted.

I've been to one in Montana, and guess what? I'd rather live in the ghetto because it'd probably be cleaner and a whole lot safer than a reservation.

And if by God anything were to happen to you on a reservation, say getting raped or robbed, the police won't/ can't do anything because it is considered a sovereign nation. And good luck trying to get the police force from the reservation to do anything about it.

I guess if another country invaded the U.S., claimed the country as its own, made its society dominant and took away everybody's rights, only to come to its senses centuries later and grudgingly concede a few rights back, you wouldn't feel victimized either. If they raped women, then seized the children to train them to become their servants--that's okay, too.

Most of the countries in Africa today which have the largest problems were once colonies of the British, French and Dutch - borders were redrawn, Africans were subjects - not part of the European governments in place, etc. If these countries were not colonized, Africa would be a different place and better for those who were there first.

Aborigines have been trampled by Westerners for generations--their children stolen to be raised by whites; forced to live under white rules. When I visited there a number of years ago, I felt that Australian attitudes about the aborigines were like those of white Americans about blacks in the 1950s.

Captn. if you think the People living on the reservations 'wallow in filth' you really should look at any poor community in this country - from inner cities 'bad areas' to dirt poor rural areas in the South. Some poor people keep all their old stuff in case they may need something from that 'junk'. I would much rather live in the poorest reservation than in bad neighborhoods of LA, Chicago, New York, or New Orleans - by a factor of 1000 to one. I have NEVER felt unsafe in a most run down reservation.

PJ why should Aussies get use to rowdy behaviour? Sadly the majority of aboriginals in Australia have a bad reputation because of their own actions. They are given whatever they need and the non-aboriginal tax payers pay for it. There is still a lot of racism in Australia which goes both ways. You should see the $40000 cars they are seen driving around in and I guarantee you they didn't pay for them. This really upsets the hard working people trying to make a living but then part of their taxes are supporting these people. There will always be fighting as long as the attitudes stay the same. It is very sad that a lot of aborigines choose to sit under a tree all day drinking instead of trying to get a job but then again why would they change when they are being enabled by the government? I've known a few aborigines that work and the attitude towards them is exactly the same as it is towards anyone that has a job and is trying to earn their own. Good on you for not sitting on your arse! I wish it was different but it just isn't at the moment. They have even better opportunities than anyone to further their educations with special grants just for being aboriginals but many choose not to do anything about it. Unfortunate because their culture is one that we can all learn from.

I live in Peru and the indigenous are still struggling for their rights. In Cusco, their heart and soul, there is a small monument with a plaque commemorating the 500 years of struggle and all the lives lost due to the "conquest". No one has forgotten. I used to love playing with the little old indian ladies in the local markets who would always have Inca vs Spanish chess sets on display. I would ask them, "Well, who won? They would always reply, "Well, the Spanish, of course." Then I would look around and ask, "Where are the Spanish now? Reply, "They've gone." When I would say, "Well, it looks like you won then" it would always take a minute to soak in, but the inevitable gut level laughter would come. They were always smiling when I left. Cusco is a city of about 400,000 and probably 90% or more indigenous american.

Thanks for your intelligent post. You have to know the situation in Australia to appreciate what's going on down there.

Some people compare it to the American Indian situation, but it isn't like that. Most Abbo's don't want to be tamed with an education.

It has been my first-hand experience since the early 1960's that Australians are among the most racist people in the world, ranking right up there with the Japanese and similar to the USA in maybe the 1930's.

The contrast between Australian and New Zealander treatment of its indigenous peoples is a stark contrast. The Australian Aborigines were a pastoral, peaceful, nomadic people who were easily conquered by Europeans with guns. The only protection the aborigines ever had was the extremely and hostile land itself. The Maoris, on the other hand, were a warlike Polynesian people who actually featured war as a pastime. Not so easily conquered since they liked fighting anyway and thought that guns were a wonderful and useful innovation. So the New Zealanders have had to form a better relationship with the Maoris.

If you go to Australia and look at the newspapers, you see daily articles about alchoholism, rapes, killings, fights, gangs, etc --- always involving Aborigines. In New Zealand's news papers you are more likely to encounter Maori words in common usage. While the Maoris have their own cultural integration issues, they are light years ahead of the aborigines.

My wife is a social scientist and researcher. Several years ago she was in vited to speak at two different Australian universities. Since a lot of the expenses were paid, I went along as her "arm candy." Much of our social life in the trip involved faculty teas and receptions. But one thing that astounded me was that even well-educated academics who should know better, very openly pull you aside to "educate" you about the criminal, shiftless, alcoholic, stupid Aborigines who are killing the country by sucking at the public teat. I finally just countered it by asking, in the most pleasant possible voice, "If all this is true, how do you explain that the average aborigine is around 15 IQ points smarter than the average Australian?" Their self-righteous indignation was priceless.

The Australians came in a wave of not just colonists, but wave upon wave of exiled petty criminals and political convicts. (Lots of Americans can trace their roots back to the Georgia penal colonies as well.) When they arrived, they killed the Aborigines for sport. They forced them from every inch of land that was worth having, reniging on promise after promise. Until the 1980's, it was a routine practice for physicians to tell aborigine mothers that their newborn child had died, when in fact the child was being placed in a government "school" to "purge them of their Aboriginal taint." The often stated goal was to "Eliminate the full-blood and permit the white admixture to half-castes and eventually the race will become white."

The Australian government ordered all the records destroyed in 1969 to prevent human rights groups from bringing lawsuits, so there is no way to get an accurate count of the children "stolen" from their parents. The most conservative estimates start at around 100,000 with most estimates considerably higher --- the so-called Stolen Generations.

In order to forestall UN sanctions regarding genocide, in 2008, the Australian government formally apologized to the Aborigines (though they did nothing more than apoligize.) People watching the Prime Minister and opposition leader's reply speech protested nationwide. Thousands of people who had gathered in Canberra and Melbourne turned their backs on the screens displaying the speech; in Perth people booed and jeered until the screen was eventually switched off; those watching in Parliament House's Great Hall began a slow clap, finally turning their backs, with similar scenes and walk-outs in Sydney and elsewhere." The vast majority of Australians feel that the apology was a mistake and that the Aborigines are "loathsome creatures."

Considering that there were only about 500,000 Aborigines when Australia was settled, and the impact of wholesale slaughter of the Aborigines as well as small pox, influenza, typhoid, syphillus, etc that the Europeans brought as "gifts", the population had dwindled to 93,000 in 1900. 100,000 stolen children looms large.

Under Australian law (the Half-Caste Acts) you are an Aborigine and a ward of the state if you are one-fourth Aborigine. But if you had 25% or more white blood, you were considered white and automatically were supposed to be taken from your parents' "abusive custody." The Commonwealth Franchise Act of 1902 excluded "Aboriginal natives of Australia, Asia, Africa and Pacific Islands except New Zealand" from voting unless they were on the roll before 1901. By 1979, when human rights organizations around the world started to take note of the Aborigines, their life expectancy had changed from 15 years greater than the "white" population (exclusive of mixed blood Aborigines) to 25 years less than the white population. This is how benevolent the treatment of Aborigines was --- a decline of an astounding 40 years in life expectancy compared to the white population.

Less than half of Aborigines complete high school compared to whites of the same income levels. Government programs still emphasize that "Aborigines are ill-suited to modern technologies and education." There is 40% more unemployment among Aborigines today than whites. Criminal convictions in Australia are currently 14 times higher and 10 times longer sentences than white accused of the same crime. Australian law forbids free legal aid for Aborigines of as much as 75% white blood. This probably accounts for a good part of the extremely high conviction rate.

This is the shame of Australia (along with its alcoholism and suicide rates.) Ambrose Bierce described "democracy" as "Four wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for dinner." Australia has, and still continues, to be one of the most repressive, racist, and brutal governments in the world. Normally you only see this form of racism in countries with huge ethno-cultural homogeneity --- such as Japan. Australia's treatment of its Aborigines makes it an exception even to that.

I would suggest that Australia is a good country to skip in your world travels unless you really like beer in excess and hate speech, especially while drunk and "not accountable." The scenery you find is New Zealand is superior in every way to that found in Australia. The Maoris are a great deal of fun and seeing their living conditions is not depressing as seeing the Aborigines in Australia is. I continue to find the racist attitudes of both white Australians and South Africans to be stubbornly offensive. The Cronulla riots of 2005 show how very much alive Australian racism is. A protest against Middle Eastern immigration turned violent and escalated into attacks on Sidney's Aborigines and its ghetto. (Hey, when you've had a few Foster's Liquid Courage and there are no "ragheads" in sight, you beat up and kill your traditional downtrodden --- Aborigines.)

While the historical treatment of aboriginal or indigenous people by white governments in both America and Australia has been very lamentable, let us not forget that there were very Few indigenous people in those lands before white and other settlers arrived and that there was space for all. The vast majority of the present population of Australia date from the arrival of the first white settlers from Britain. Many more have arrived, even of other races and ethnic groups since then.

In the Americas, the vast majority of the present population owes it presence to the arrival of the heroic explorer Columbus. The Americas now are largely biracial, mestizo, mulatto and secondarily white. Many are black. The Native peoples are a minority, but deserve respect as do All people that live in the Americas. In what is now the US, many Indian tribes or nations were at war with one another and would massacre members of the other tribes. There was No Concept of being Indians or Native peoples until they found they had lost all the wars and most of the territory.

The opposition leader's comments in Australia were a recognition of past problems and a plea to "move on" from the past, so the interpretation certainly did not merit a hostile attack on the location. Some people try to misinterpret everything in radical ways. Read Abbot's comments again and try to reason on his words. If the Aboriginal peoples still have some issues, let them state them rationally, precisely, and peacefully, although forcefully also, if they feel they have been ignored.

The massive alcohol problems in all States headlines....You may not be informed over there what goes on in the American Indian world, but we are very well informed here what goes on in the Aboriginal world. The law I'm most referring to is the new one put in place where the Aborigines must give up half their pay to the government so the government can decided how best to spend it for them since alcoholism seems to be an issue with Aborigines but alcoholism loves depression and when you feel like you are at the bottom and are being stereotyped by the law one can only wonder when depression will show itself.

Shona1, just in case you were unaware, in the U.S. people are always saying how racist the south is, that they are the most racist in the country, due to the Southern heritage of having once owned slaves in the most extreme sense of the atrocity. (I'm sure you know of the American Civil War and all that entails) Well, many see South Carolina as being the most racist out of the bunch, truth be told I think Mississippi is right up there with the S.C. lot (but that is another matter entirely). So Cavalier was only comparing the two together, not saying it isn't alive and well the world over. I really think that in America the racism is no worse in the south than it is anywhere else, I just know southerners don't hold back on their true feelings the way the rest of the country may, they aren't much for the whole political correctness nonsense.

Mike Sol, sadly in our own country we treat the Natives the same, we may not take their pay but we did give (and not really for it was not ours to give) them a paltry space of land to live on after we nearly decimated their race entirely. And they have other organizations to fall back on, in the Outback there is nothing. But they are now looking into it as white children etc are being neglected as well etc. In the Aboriginal communities things have got so bad with booze many communities have now gone dry and no alcohol is allowed in. It is policed by the Aborigines themselves and mainly by the women. They are sick of the bashings, the stabbings, the sexual assults on their children by others in their community and the general destruction of their communities. Children are malnourished and eating junk food and now diabetes is a majour concern. To try and stop the general destruction this has been brought in so they have to buy food and clothes for their kids. Or they can go roo hunting for other indigenous food sorces it they want, but alot of them are losing the knowledge. It is not being handed down. They have tried education, extra payments if their kids go to school, we get find if they don't, but nothing works. So with the assistance of some Aboriginal communities this is what they came up with and decided on. Yes we expected the racist screams by some communities but what else is there? No it is not great, but it is better than nothing for the moment until something better comes along. If it stops a child going hungry be they black or white then far as I am concerned it is not a horrible law.

Tribal people believe that their way was right for their particular tribe . And for good reason they had 1000 upon 1000s of years to work it out . Our culture of keeping food locked up and working for that food is fairly young . We are now seeing the unsustainable reactions to our actions .

As long as we point to man as first becoming a civilized culture about 2000 years ago historically then all that predates this period does not exist , yet it did and those people did not toil the soil as we do for our food and they certainly did not ever seek to exterminate others because they lived differently .

I went to Australia while in the service. And AU12 is right, 99 % of the country is the most wonderful and friendliest people you ever want to meet. And of course they have the A-holes too. Since I live in South Carolina, I don't find racisem rampat. My girlfriends family lives in Connecticut and they are all extremely racist. Yes, the people who live in the Charleston area are pretty racist, but throughout the rest of the State racisem is much less rampant.

As for American Indians, I'm mostly Commache, have lived on our 'Trust' lands (we have no reservation as such), deplorable conditions. I suspect Australian Aborigines are treated much the same. I live in South Carolina because I find the atmosphere of the State much better than that of Oklahoma.

I feel your pain with math and science issues, but are you expecting the education system to teach kids about respect, honesty, honor and integrity? Historically, this has been taught through the religion and family culture. We dont really want public schools to venture that far. Only mandate for public schools is to train the workforce for todays economy and they can barely do that job. We have to rely on family structure to teach these values, that worked for centuries and hopefully will continue to do so.

Religion and family culture is in a death spiral in America. Too much government "protecting" and supporting all the victims. Naturally education suffers.

Its not school's job to raise children. Its the parents job. Instead of talking family values - practice them and show it. There is a reason why people call themselves conservatives and but porn is a multi-billion dollar industry. Same reason why Gingrich can divorce his first wife during cancer treatment, divorce the second wife for not agreeing to a open marriage and then still call marriage - bond between a man and a women and lead in "conservative" SC and FL panhandle.
