Militants apparently captured 29 Chinese workers after attacking a remote worksite in a volatile region of Sudan, and Sudanese forces were increasing security for Chinese projects and personnel there, China said Sunday.
China has close political and economic relations with Sudan, especially in the energy sector.
The Foreign Ministry in Beijing said the militants attacked Saturday and Sudanese forces launched a rescue mission Sunday in coordination with the Chinese embassy in Khartoum.
The Ministry's head of consular affairs met with the Sudanese ambassador in Beijing and "urged him to actively conduct rescue missions under the prerequisite of ensuring the safety of the Chinese personnel," the statement said.
In Khartoum, a Chinese embassy spokesman said the northern branch of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement announced that 29 Chinese workers had been captured in the attack. The spokesman, who asked not be identified, gave no other details and it wasn't clear if the militants had demanded conditions for their return.
Other details weren't given. The official Xinhua News Agency cited the state governor as saying the Sudan People's Liberation Movement attacked a road-building site in South Kordofan and seized the workers.
The Sudan People's Liberation Movement are a guerrilla force that has fought against Sudan's regime. Its members hail from a minority ethnic group now in control of much of South Sudan, which became the world's newest country only six months ago in a breakaway from Sudan.
Sudan has accused South Sudan of arming pro-South Sudan groups in South Kordofan. The government of South Sudan has called such accusations a smoke screen intended to justify a future invasion of the South.
China has sent large numbers of workers to potentially unstable regions such as Sudan and last year was forced to send ships and planes to help with the emergency evacuation of 30,000 of its citizens from the fighting in Libya.
China has consistently used its clout in diplomatic forums such as the United Nations to defend Sudan and its longtime leader Omar al-Bashir. In recent years, it has also sought to build good relations with leaders from the south, where most of Sudan's oil is located.
Chinese companies have also invested heavily in Sudanese oil production, along with companies India and elsewhere.

I haven't been keeping up with Sudan, but didn't they break the state up into north and south? So why the heck are they fighting?
Because someone wants their oil, Sally, just like in Libya. The propaganda machine aka " free press", the tool of the 1% makes news ( not report it as should be ) and the truth is hidden ,so often nothing reported makes sense . The Chinese need oil and can pay in products or their currency, not in dollars , so there is more that meets the eye. Ask yourself why Libya , a sovereign nation under U.N. Charter ,was attacked with modern military -bombers,helicopters, foreign troops real and disguised under the banner of " humanitarian aid" with war crimes even shown on TV ? There were Chinese there ,too, working in oil fields of Libya. We hear so many lies that it is a pleasure to listen to Ron Paul , our only hope in my view.
It's not Sudan fighting with South Sudan, It's the rebels in Sudan, SPLM-N, fighting with Sudanese government army. maybe they want to break Sudan again, in the future, there will be three Sudans: Sudan, the Middle Sudan, the South Sudan.
In order to learn the truth!!!
The first thing everyone needs to research when you hear of "insurgents" or "rebel guerrillas" or "militants" causing terror and unrest, (in order to know the truth about why these events are taking place & spreading from one country to the next ,) is :
1).--Does the "involved" country have OIL? I can promise you it does, or it has other valuable natural resources that can be exploited.
And:
2)--Have they recently "NATIONALIZED THEIR OIL????"<<<This is a big "red flag!!!"
You will realize this is the reason these "destabilizing incidents" are taking place!!!
And they will continue until, either the regime cooperates, or the regime is over-thrown in a coup d'etat. "They" (you know WHO "THEY" are), don't want countries NATIONALIZING THEIR OWN RESOURCES & INDUSTRIES!!
In the end, it will end up with the "PRIVATIZATION OF THEIR RESOURCES & INDUSTRIES.">>We will hear of "familiar, well known companies" getting contracts for oil, mining, etc, etc.
The initial deployment will be in Uganda, the president said in October, and the ARMED U S military "advisers" will operate in South Sudan, Central African Republic and the Congo “subject to the approval of each respective host nation.”
This article doesn't mention the ARMED U S "MILITARY ADVISORS" that Obama deployed in October, 2011.
Why not? Where are they? What are they doing there?
Holding Chinese captive is good for a change.
Chinese act smarter than what they are!
What an idiotic, racist, thing to say.
scott m: When there are no arguments, finger pointing and abuses are the easiest way out!
And you do it so well.
joe - you are absolutely right!! Ron Paul our only hope. Let's pray Obummer doesn't try to rescue them............
Hmmmm.... Wait a sec there. How much debt would they cancel in exchange for a quick raid by a seal team?
Critical times hard to deal with, will be here. Man dominating man to his injury.
They are just workers and please release them who have nothing to do with whatever the people of Sudan are fighting for.
And surpiseingly to see the Asian nations have the hands there already.
china how about the safety of syrian people ha?!! only safety for the chinese, get lose you chinese
Whoops, the Chinese just found out what the rest of the world already knows. You can't deal with terrorists. I wonder what they are going to do?
I'd suggest to these rebels, let the Chinese go as quickly as you can! China is must smarter than the US, they will waste no time in killing every one of you scum rebels who attacked thier people. This just might be a really good lesson for all of us Americans. Oh, and if anyone has ever noticed, that muslims have never attacked China because they know the retribution against the typical cowardly muslim attacks would be so totally swift and severe there would never be another attack.
There have been muslim insurgency in China, but only in the far western regions where there are different minority groups. It is an on going problem that is not resolved swiftly or efficiently because there are millions who cannot be marginalized forever. Although I must admit that China doesn't follow human rights rules when deciding what to with them.
No, Muslim terrorists haven't attacked China because China isn;t occupying their countries, building bases in their countries, supplying unlimited arms and financial aid to its enemies, bombing their people, and sticking its nose in their domestic affairs.
"Muslim terrorists haven't attacked China because China isn;t occupying their countries, building bases in their countries, supplying unlimited arms and financial aid to its enemies, bombing their people, and sticking its nose in their domestic affairs."
Actually, they HAVE been doing all that (save building military bases in foreign countries). But China's kind of a n00b, you know? Not that easy to get a bunch of fanatics all riled up about them when America's still around, large and in charge. And I know that there are many protests and riots in China that are routinely suppressed; I don't know if any of them were Islamic, but Ineptia says they were. Can't confirm that myself, but I believe it.
Well Well the Chinese government that thinks they can handle the Muslims and the constant fighting in the region are now running for their lives and being kidnapped and they send in a Sudanese Army to extract their hostages and expect to get them out unharmed? I don't hold much hope that they will get them out unharmed because it takes highly skilled well equipped and experienced military men to pull off a rescue of this magnitude.
At least China respects Sudan and doesn't roll its Military in and invade them. They are allowing the Sudanese to handle the situation with some advisors of course. USA would just fly in extract their people bomb some innocents in the progress and piss everyone off.
American seals didn't bomb anyone the when they got the two hostages (one was a young woman)who were missionaries. I am against invading any country but the taking of hostages is a serious business and if you think the Chinese are so high minded and respectful of others then you need to look at their human rights violations. I might also add that they are not in Sudan to help the Sudanese people they are there to exploit them and use the Sudanese army to do their dirty work. If you think that the North or the South Sudanese people have not killed innocents then you really are naive.
Well it could be worse. The Chinese workers could be home working at Foxconn.
The Chinese are heavily invested in numerous countries on the African continent. The biggest mistake they are making is that rather than train locals to do the job, they bring in their own citizens to do the work, try to keep their workers from co-mingling with the locals by bringing in their own food and other goods. Of the money paid to the Chinese workers for wages, very little gets to the locals. This has been going on for at least 10 years in some places and longer in others. In some of the African countries, this is starting to cause resentment and is similar in concept to what was done on the continent during the occupation by Europeans. Any money paid resources goes to the rulers of the country and are sometimes wired directly to out of country bank accounts. Take the resources, ship them home, leave when you've taken it all and the locals get nothing for the resources.
I was in Cameroon and Nigeria a couple of years ago and was surprised by the number of Chinese I saw there at the airports and on the street.
Historically, Africa had always been trading with China, India and the Middle East. And everyone prospered. Then the European colonists came along and decided to just steal everything instead of trade. They are a cancer and everything these European colonists touched turned to @!$%#. I don't know how you can compare European colonialism to China in Africa now.
who cares?
I don't think China's government cares too much if some of their people get kidnapped. They have plenty of more people. Also, the Chinese mentality is not like American's mentality. For example, if a Chinese person falls in the river and is drowning, he will most likely drown unless he can swim. That's because Chinese people will not help others in trouble, for fear of being blamed or responsible for the fall. Just like that little girl on video that was ran over by a car In China and many people just drove by without helping the little girl. Some other vehicles actually ran over her again. Also, another video from China where a Chinese woman was trying to commit suicide by drowning in the river. An American woman jumped in the river and saved that woman. Chinese folks could not understand why the American woman jump in to save someone she did not even know. Its all on video on Internet.
