BBC: Secret report reveals Pakistan-Taliban ties

Pakistan’s security services are directly assisting the Taliban in Afghanistan and know where senior militant leaders are hiding, the BBC reported on Tuesday.

The British news service cited a leaked secret NATO report compiled from thousands of interrogations.

According to the report, the Taliban remain defiant in the midst of allied bombardment and also still maintain wide support among Afghans.

Taliban talks: Another Karzai tiff with the US?

The BBC story comes after a series of reports that the United States, NATO and the Afghan government plan talks with the Taliban in an effort to end the 10-year war in Afghanistan. It also comes amid tensions between the United States and Pakistan.

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

Defense Secretary Panetta told CBS’ "60 Minutes" on Sunday that he remains convinced that someone in the Pakistani government must have had an idea that a person of interest was in the compound where Osama bin Laden was killed. In the interview, Panetta acknowledged a Pakistani doctor, Shakil Afridi, provided information to the United States that helped identify the al-Qaida leader. After the raid, Pakistan arrested Afridi and has accused him of treason.

And last November, Pakistan shut down NATO supply routes into Afghanistan after a NATO raid killed 28 Pakistani troops at a remote outpost. The Pakistani government also ordered a U.S. drone base closed.

According to the BBC's correspondent in Kabul, Quentin Sommerville, the leaked report for the first time exposes ties between the Pakistani intelligence service, known as ISI, and the Taliban.

Though alleged in the past, Pakistan has denied any direct links with the Taliban.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen alluded to ISI ties to militants fighting in Afghanistan during testimony in September 2011, according to NBC.

Pakistan has closed crucial roads used to ferry supplies to U.S and NATO troops in Afghanistan-- leaving Pakistani drivers stranded and driving up the U.S. price tag for the war. NBC's Amna Nawaz reports from Peshawar.

He called the Haqqani Network, a close ally of the Taliban, the "veritable arm” of the ISI, and said that the ISI is using other “proxies” to attack in Afghanistan.

NATO spokesman Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings told the BBC that the report was a “classified internal document not meant to be released to the public.”

According to the BBC, the report, based on 27,000 interrogations with captured Taliban, al-Qaida and other fighters, states: "As this document is derived directly from insurgents it should be considered informational and not necessarily analytical."

The Afghan government says President Hamid Karzai will hold talks with the Taliban in the hopes of starting a peace process. NBC's Atia Abawi reports from Kabul, Afghanistan.

Can anyone on newsvine give a reasonable and convincing argument as to why after more than ten years after defeating the filthy hillbilly Taliban in 3 weeks why Americans are still fighting and dying in a war so far away from our shores against an enemy armed with ak-47 rifles and rpgs that literally wipes their behinds with their hand{left}? We are surrounded by Islamic enemies in pakistan and Afghanistan posing as our friends while murdering our young warriors when they turn their back. President Obama time to follow the French lead and accelerate our withdrawal from this entire area as these cave dwelling muslims are not a threat to the mainland of the USA,the only way they can kill americans is when we go to their primitive country and fight in the dirt and mud with them, let's wise up and stop the muslims at the borders airports and immigration offices!

LIfe- why not ask Obama what the mission is in Afghanistan? How about the media ask him? We rarely hear a thing about this war. If McCain was president the media would be drilling him about the lack of progress. People would be taking to the streets in liberal cities across the US, but now are silent. Hypocrites.

Bush was right to leave Afghanistan after pretty knocking off the immediate enemy. The Taliban may have been a co-conspirator but they were not the initial target. So the Taliban jumped back into power once the US moved on to Iraq. So? Apparently the Taliban was in fact a target since Obama choose to accelerate the war effort there. But why? If the Afghan people want to be suppressed by the Taliban that is their choice. Why are we nation building there?

Why is Obama being given a pass? He doesn't like to talk about Afghanistan and nobody asks him about it either.

Life&Liberty,

I completely agree. Most people dont remember that we supported these Muslims when The Soviet Union was trying to eradicate them. All in the name of the Soviets not having a warm water port. HInd sight and all that.

We really should pull all of our troops out immediately. The Muslims will go back to killing each other, and as long as we are vigilant, we can keep them off of our shores. Everyone knows that Clinton could've killed Osama, and likely prevent 9/11. Maybe political correctness was the reason, but I liked how America used to be. Like when we bombed Libya. We dont need to have American boots on the ground when cruise missiles, and drones do a bloody good job.

If I had the job I would remove all troops and send a message to every person on this planet. If you mess with the U.S. you get bombed back to the dark ages.

And then we will send aid : )

Why don't the so called 'conservatives' and 'liberals' read sh!T before posting stupid questions?

I am not against those who want to pull out of Afghanistan at this point, but as to why we are still there, your government answered that question a long time ago and you may disagree with it, but shut up about not knowing it. And just to remind you, it is the military and defense secretary Gates that are recommending we don't just up and leave right away. Like they did in Iraq. We left earlier than was recommended in Iraq because of the Iraqi government and the current President wanting us out of their earlier. Can you argue that Obama should have even made it faster? Sure. But again, don't ask dumb questions whose answers are already out there. Try reading and then making an intelligent arguement.

The sad thing is that America's safety was much more protected when the majority of Muslims were ruled by dictators. How many Muslims have the U.S. army, and civilian contractors, killed compared to the Hussein brothers? What happens when Muslims arent controlled by an iron fist? They kill each other.

Not trying to be inhumane but what these barbarians are doing in Northern Africa, and now South America, is frightening.

We even have Muslims doing honor killings in the good ole USA. Islam has never evolved and that is a problem.

We are in Afghanistan whole hog because one of Obama's campaign promises was to take the war back to where Osama was based. Whose to say that Osama wasnt killed because we focused on the right area. You cant fault Obama for that.

But.

Why do we send ur kids over ther to be their parents? Why do we need to pay Pakistan Why do we know Pakistan bend us over and not have the common courtisy of giving us (use your imagination). What the hell is going on? As Far as I am concerned Pakistan can kiss my ass. They play that they are our ally. If yer stupid I guess you believe that. So stop beleiving if we give that if we give them Brittney Spears thet are gonna love us.

American POLITICAL RESTRAINTS. It's as simple as that. We as a nation have been the proverbial 'Broken Record' since post WW2 incursions and wars. Our Congressional leaders and some Presidents fail to act on the big picture. We know full well who is pushing the buttons in Afghanistan and it ain't those wild eyed, crap-fingered anthropoids dragging their Kalashnikovs across the landscape there.

Our military might has not been turned lose to completely fulfill their promises (missions) of protecting this country because YOUR government has continually hamstrung them from completing their missions. We have been fighting our enemies in a God damn BOX for almost 67 years! That didn't happen during WW2 when we "kicked ass and took names" across the entire planet with bullets and dumb bombs in four and a half years. Pakistan along with Iran, Syria and North Korea (to name a few) should have been reduced to rubble when we had the chance to retaliate. We conveniently isolate our adversaries within the political boundaries of their country's borders while we IGNORE THE OBVIOUS and disregard other 'Actors' in the region who give aide to the enemy and kill our troops. PAKISTAN.

As I have said before on these blogs, we need a policy change which would first gather the irrefutable evidence of collaboration: Make our case; Point our fingers: then RETALIATE. If we lay waste to these "enablers" next door to Afghanistan, a HUGE MESSAGE will be conveyed to the rest of these filth. "You screw with the United States and we WILL retaliate. It's going to happen sooner than later so it might as well start now. And as far as our "Friends" China and Russia goes? Tell them to 'kiss it' and that we're doing just what "you" would do, PROTECTING OUR COUNTRY AND OUR INTERESTS.

WOW who would have thought that!? Pakistan has supported the Taliban since they took power. The ISI even airlifted 1,200 Taliban fighters to Pakistan when we first invaded Afghanistan. The Pakis have never been our ally and they never will. You know what else is kind of funny, in the 2010 video game Medal of Honor during the Operation Andaconda mission you are pretty close to the Pakistan border and one of your fellow soldiers says "That way is Pakistan we will be going there shortly" I just find it funny. Anyway F the Pakis and support India they should be one of our closet allies in that region.

I beg to differ. I spent time down range, in combat zones. Due to the harhness of the region, they had to grow up with dependance on their tribes. To us, what we call civilized, to them could be considered supporting the weakest link, in an area the the strongest survive. And as far as civilized, urinating on a body? Making naked men lay atop of eachother? and only God (our version) knows what has truly happened over there, as no one is going to tell the true. I have seen things that would turn your stomach and turn away in disbelief. The people are rugged survivors in a very harsh land. I can tell you have never been give the hospitality of a "middle easterner", as your cup will over-flow with their generosity. Of course they are not trustworthy, you are not a member of their tribe; a group the have based the basics of exsistance apon. But, if you earn their trust, then you will have a fierist, closest friend, but you will not come between their order of life; Allah (their religion), family, and tribe. I have a good understanding of some of the people there. And we have not done much over there to dispell the worlds view of America. We are a brash, ruthless, lying, kniving, under-handed, loud, arrogant, bulling nation in the world's eyes and there has been little done to prove anything different. And as far as trust-worthy goes, as a nation, we have flip-flopped our support as it has suited our nation and it's agendas; even if it was terrible policies or actions. We support terrible rulers and dictators. Why? Because they maybe friendly to America and support us up front, but stab us in the back when they can. Many countries do not have the liberties we enjoy, as the power was not given "by the people". The strongest, most ruthless and hardest, rose to take the power and leadership. Even when the leaders of this country knew it to be wrong, they still supported people like this. And we wonder why, as a nation and as a people, we are hated so badly. I put 27 years of my life in the defence of this nation and would still be there, if I wasnt too old. And yes, with what I wrote, I would still defend my country; even with her many faults. Why? Because I have a faith in the democratic way of life. I believe that others can benifit from self rule and the choice of whom they care to choose as a leader. And the choice of removing that leader, when they no longer support a nation and a peoples choices. And, civilized, isnt having the luxuries of life and running water in a bathroom. It's how a country treats its people and supports those people. Some of the more wealthy countries pay for their peoples medical health care; I have yet to see that for me in this great civilized nation. Again, do I want to live anywhere else, no as I have faith in our way of life. And before I get attacked as being a Democratic, Obama supporter, I am not. I do not supprt that political agenda. I am a Republican. Why the Democratic views? Because I have faith in America and what this nation can become, only if we truly become the nation we pertend we are. God bless America and guide us down the correct path.

We cannot control the Paki border, wihtout annihilating all of Pakistan and creating the headache of instability of a country with suddenly no infrastructure. We cannot control our "interests" in the Strait of Hormuz, without all out war with Iran, a partnership we ruined not once but three times in modern history. Their navy beats ours, and they only have little gunboats. How? We clearly have no definition of how to win, without total all out counterattack of any nation.

You can blame yourself for losing ground to China. The corporations moved manufacturing to China because Americans were willing to accept inferior junk and sell out their neighbor in order to pay a few dollars less for an item. The people left the corporations with no option but to move overseas, because they wouldn't pay for American made products. Government policy and misguided treaties didn't help either.

actually your logic is flawed... you seem to assume the consumer is at fault, that is not so. The consumer does not have to buy anything if they do/do not want to.. it is the corporations selling their souls to china to MAKE a quick buck off of these poor people... nothing more.

but keep thinking that it is OUR fault, because obviously you have NEVER bought ANYTHING from CHINA... EVER... so you can not be the problem. good luck with that...

Life&liberty- You stated that "the ONLY way they can kill Americans is if we go to their primitive country." This a horribly inaccurate and skewed statement. The Taliban are terrorists who are hell bent on destroying anybody that they deem as infidels, especially Americans. 99.9% of Muslim extremists hold the same beliefs and convictions. These beliefs and convictions led to the what we call 9/11. Remember that? Remember that it happened here? In America?

How about this idea...cut all funding to Pakistan. When they ask why we cut their funding, we'll then simply deny that we cut the funding.

What a great idea. Please do cut funding. That funding is gobbled by corrupt politicians anyway.

I beg to differ. I have known many East Indians; most are pretty funny once you know them. They are also becoming a good ally of the United States. They really have a very human side to them.

Pakis are ......well, very different. I'll just leave it at that.

Pro Am: You zero out about the Packies. They are the Islamic nutcases India threw out of the country for starters. They still hold baddad (revenge) deep into their hearts against India. In that line of religion, Islam, how one deals revenge is EVERYTHING! Mumbai times two should ring a bell. Sonar is essentially right. Tons of bad blood between the two. The main reason Al-Qaeda and the Taliban became so strong in A-Stan is because the Packies pulled its guys from the A-Stan border and sent them to the line with India right after Mumbai Two. Packieland also knows that India will indeed pay them back for Mumbai. Understand that on that side of the world there's but two countries that won't turn a face when slapped. India and Israel. Both strike back on their and their terms only. The above comes with mucho time spent there and seeing the REAL picture. Many Quds have established roots there too as evidenced by the increased hardware from Iran being used by the Packies. Don't be surprised if Karzai gives in completely to the Taliban because no other country will take him, not even Hugo Chavez. Because of this Karzai will have to buddy up to the Packies because Tommy Taliban will put him down just like his brother, the former head of the opium trade. Packieland is the most regional and factional governed nation on Earth. Boss today, be-headed tomorrow. Nothing like a real working experience on the subject to put a spine to an opinion. Get some, your words will mean more.

In 1947, when Pakistan and India got independence from the British...Pakistan chose to be America's ally while India chose to be Soviet Union's ally. We did all the dirty work for Americans in the Cold War and this is how America repays us. Ask Reagan's ghost who helped defeat the Soviets. He won't say indians, thats for sure.

As for indians commenting in this page, its us Pakistanis who always wanted to get away from you cow worshipper pagans.

Islamic religious Nazi barbaric beasts, Pakis and Saudis, are the worst liabilities on earth ever seen in the history of mankind!

9/11, Iraqi wars (1991 and 2003), Osama case and half of NATO forces deaths in Afghanistan and more humiliations are due to them.

They are also responsible for most of our problems in the US.

I think sht gonna hit the fan soon, China pissed off, Russia pissed off, Iran acting crazy as usual, Pakistan is a snake in the grass playing both sides, Americans fighting man dying, big corporations are swimming in money and the mass is starving , committing suicides, losing jobs , homes.

I think sooner or later (hopefully sooner) the masses will rebel all over the world, and when all this is over and 2/3 of the population is dead, things will be better.

Some thirty years ago, I took a Military Science course at Northern Michigan University. It was taught by a high ranking Air Force officer. I was told way back then by him that someday, circumstances surrounding Pakistan would be the cause for WW III. Hmmmmm!!!

Basset: I vote first that Assad will lose Syria. Losing Syria he also loses Lebanon. Iran loses their only acting friend on the East Med. Iran is isolated, makes threats to Israel in hopes to gain support from other Islamic nations. Israel gains a wider foothold in Lebanon and strikes first at Iran before other Islamic nations offer support regardless of what the US wants. My second vote is India returns the favor to the Packies for the two strikes in Mumbai.

Actually both Iran and Pakistan are threats to our people in that region. Not so much to the US mainland though. We either need to go all out to wipe out one or both or else just go home and let them fight amoung themselves. Just going home is probably the better option at present. When they attack us in the US, wipe them out, no quarter.

Karzai knows his days are numbered, with the Packies all at the line with India the Tommies (Taliban) have gotten stronger and deeper into A-Stan. Take the rural areas and you have the metro areas in a stranglehold. A-Stan is gonna go back to the Tommies, Karzai wants to keep his head so he has to buddy up to the Packies. Not even Uncle Hugo wants him in Venezuela! He's got the Chinese already because they pay for their stuff lightning quick, perfect. What represents the Afghan government's days are numbered and Karzai and the Tommies know it. I vote Karzai goes to Packieland until they give him up to Tommy in exchange for a deeper handful of the opium game Tommy has full control of today.

Steve: The job is half done. Bin Laden only represented the face of Al Qaeda. Zawahiri is the spine of the outfit. Until Ayman's head is separated from his body the job is nowhere near complete. More than likely the Packies are protecting him and countless others of his flavor. After all, Zawahiri has an endless line of people wanting to give their lives for the cause than the Packies could ever dream of having. With a force like that the Packies would be stupid in not giving the head of such an army refuge. Remember, you're only as safe as your neighbor is and your guests!
