At least 70 people died and hundreds were injured after a match between fierce rivals. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
Updated 6:48 p.m. ET:
CAIRO -- Soccer fans stormed the field and rioted Wednesday after a match between fierce rivals in the port city of Port Said, attacking each other with fists, stones, fireworks and bottles. More than 70 people were killed in the stampede and hundreds injured in one of the worst incidents of sports violence in Egypt's history.
The melee broke out after fans of Al-Masry, the home team in Port Said, stormed the field after a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly, Egypt's top team. Al-Masry supporters hurled sticks and stones as they chased players and fans from the rival team, who ran toward the exits to escape, according to witnesses.
State TV footage showed Al-Ahly players rushing for their locker room as fistfights broke out among the crowd. Some men had to rescue a manager from the losing team as he was being beaten. Black-clothed police officers stood by, appearing overwhelmed.
Rival fans shot firebombs and fireworks and threw stones, bottles and other objects at each other and some players.
The Interior Ministry said 74 people died, including at least one police officer, and 248 were injured, 14 of them police.
Hesham Sheiha, a health ministry official, told state TV that most of the deaths were caused by concussions, deep cuts to the heads and suffocation from the stampede.

"This is unfortunate and deeply saddening. It is the biggest disaster in Egypt's soccer history," deputy health minister Hesham Sheiha told state television. The players were later taken to the locker room for protection, Sayed Hamdi, a player, told state TV.
At least 47 people were arrested in connection with the melee, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim said.
Egypt Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of the country's ruling military council, ordered two helicopters be sent to Port Said to evacuate Ahly team members and injured fans.
"These kind of events can happen anywhere in the world but we will not let those behind this get away," Tantawi said, speaking to the sports television channel owned by Al Ahly. He said victims would receive compensation after their cases were examined
Witnesses said trouble broke out when Al-Ahly fans unfurled banners insulting Port Said and an Ahly supporter descended onto the field carrying an iron bar. Thousands of Al-Masry fans reacted by pouring onto the field and attacking Ahly players. They then turned to the stands to attack Al-Ahli supporters.
Most of the deaths were among people who were trampled in the crush of the panicking crowd or who fell from the stands, witnesses said.
Live television coverage showed fans running onto the field and chasing Al-Ahli players, kicking and punching them as they fled.
The violence raised fresh concerns about the ability of the state police to manage crowds. Most of the hundreds of black-uniformed police with helmets and shields stood in lines and did nothing as soccer fans chased players and rival fans, some wielding sharp objects and others hurling sticks and rocks.
Al-Ahly player Mohamed Abo Treika likened the violence as war.
"This is not football. This is a war, and people are dying in front of us. There is no movement and no security and no ambulances," he told the Ahly television channel. "I call for the premier league to be canceled. This is horrible situation and today can never be forgotten."
"One of the fans died in the dressing room,” Ahmed Nagi, an Ahly goalkeeping coach, said on Egyptian state television. “And there are thousands of wounded lying in the hallways.”
Ahly’s panicked players flooded the club’s in-house television channel with phone calls to speak about the post-match horror, Egyptian news site Ahram Online reported.
“The security forces left us, they did not protect us. One fan has just died in the dressing room in front of me,” veteran playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika screamed, according to Ahram Online.
“People have died, we are seeing corpses now. There are no security forces or army personnel to protect us,” midfielder Mohamed Barakat added, according to the news site.
Soon after the violence, another scheduled soccer game in Cairo between the Al-Ismailiya and Zamalek teams was called off in mourning for the violence in Port Said. Angry fans set fire to the bleachers. No injuries were reported and employees said firefighters extinguished the blaze before it caused much damage.
Al-Ahly fans, known as the Ultra Ahlys, gathered in protest outside the clubs office in Cairo.
Deep divisions
Politics cuts deep across soccer teams in Egypt and their fans. Al-Ahly's fans have been at the forefront of the revolution that overthrew longtime leader Hosni Mubarak a year ago, leading chants and protests against the military. Their anti-police songs, peppered with curses, have become viral and an expression of the hatred many Egyptians feel toward security forces that were accused of much of the abuse that was widespread under Mubarak's regime.
Albadry Farghali, a member of parliament for Port Said, accused officials and security forces of allowing the disaster, saying they still had ties to the government of Mubarak.
"The security forces did this or allowed it to happen. The men of Mubarak are still ruling. The head of the regime has fallen, but all his men are still in their positions," he screamed in a telephone call to live television.
"Where is the security? Where is the government?"
Egypt's general prosecutor has ordered an immediate investigation into the Port Said violence, NBC News reported.
The parliament said it will hold an emergency session Thursday to discuss the riot.
The governor of Port Said, Ahmed Abdullah, submitted his resignation after the violence, NBC News reported. Port Said's director of security, Gen. Essam Samak, was suspended pending investigation by the Ministry of Interior.
Egypt's Football Association Executive Committee was holding an emergency session to discuss whether to suspend the remainder of the season.
It was the deadliest incident of soccer violence since Oct. 16, 1996, when at least 78 people died and 180 others were injured in a stampede at a stadium in Guatemala City before a World Cup qualifying match between Guatemala and Costa Rica.
The worst soccer disaster on record occurred on May 24, 1964, in Lima, Peru, when 318 fans were killed and more than 500 injured during riot and panic following an unpopular ruling by a referee in a Peru vs. Argentina match. As many as 340 were reported killed at a 1982 European Cup match between Soviet club Spartak Moscow and Haarlem of the Netherlands, but that toll was disputed by Moscow officials, who said only 61 died, according to The Assocated Press.

Religion of peace, culture of peace, sport of peace?
So confusing! The Venn diagram is one big overlap!
The Islamic religion will always be of peace and is the true religion. People who are blind (dont bother to research), deaf (dont bother to listen), and dumb (dont use their brain properly), will always see islam wrong. Remember, it's not the religion that is bad its only the people that behave bad. Do not use people's actions against islam. No one ever talks about the hutaree (radical christian group), or the fact that america went after iraq for no reason when korea had nukes. No one ever blames the christian religion do they? So do not blame my religion. At least I do not go around talking about Prophet Jesus (Peace be upon him) but people like you go around talking about Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Only the true religion would never slander a Prophet of the Monotheistic faiths.
...or no true religions exist...
"Man is the only animal that has the true religion...all of them."
--Mark Twain--
There is a race war between Islam and the Muslims right now. It takes two to tango...Islam kills people over religion too.
"The Islamic religion will always be of peace and is the true religion"
Except for when they kill Muslims....
Man was "given" religion. He never had it. Mark Twain is an animal like all of us. And we all know animals are not capable of morals so my question to you is how would an animal invent something that he himself and the rest of the world does not follow.
"...it's not the religion that is bad..."
Yeah, it is. Not just Islam. All religion is inherently evil. If there is a devil, religion is surely his creation.
Religion is a farce, feasting on brainwashed individuals who are not capable, or willing, to entertain rational thought.
Really? Then why is it that people ignore religion? People consistently have been following drugs, gambling, fornication and killing. If Islam is evil then why is the world ignoring it and trying to crush it. There are a billion christians and jews that follow their religion because the devils influenced them that man is God, yet they do not follow Islam. Why is that?because islam is the true path. Answer me this why does the world want to conquer islam and continues to slander it? You call our religion devilish yet devils do not follow this religion.
I agree with Nemesis on this one. All you have to do is search on sports/soccer catasphies and you will see dozens of such incidents from all over the World and over a century now.
http://oddculture.com/weird-news-stories/historys-top-15-worst-soccer-disasters/
@Nemesis
you are truly an idiot, in the quran and hadith it clearly states the killing of non muslims. BTW i see christian humanitarian groups all the time, where are the muslim ones?
Islam is the religion of evil, they promote nothing short of death and pain to all those who dont believe the way they do. I've read parts of the book, cause parts of it is all i could stomache.
And i did do the research btw,
qur'an:8:65
"O Prophet, urge the faithful to fight. If there are twenty among you with determination they will vanquish two hundred; if there are a hundred then they will slaughter a thousand unbelievers, for the infidels are a people devoid of understanding"
So STFU NEMESIS cause you have NO IDEA what YOU are talking about
and i wouldnt doubt if your religion(islam) was made by the devil himself. And its Islam who is trying to conquer the world. Look at the muslim populations in the UK and france, they are putting up posters for Sharia law, which is clearly them trying to takeover other places.
And i think we can agree this world is getting worse. There are less true christians now than ever, but there are alot more muslims. In fact the muslim population is the fastest growing population to date. Gee, what a coincidence
Nemesis-2101965 - you slander Jesus, who is the very Son of God, God incarnate, when you call him a mere prophet and dare to compare Muhammed, a false prophet, to him. Obviously from the looks of the Egypt and other Islamic countries, Islam isn't working.
They are ANIMALS in those countries!
mike277 - they are people, misled into believing a lie that is destroying them from the inside out.
Ishmel
Thank you A.L.S. i'm glad there is some sanity left here. I wont disagree that some people who CLAIM to be christians do messed up stuff, however, a true christian is as pure as a human can be. Nobody is without sin, but the bible is clearly against murder, Jesus lived and died for us, he was not selfish, and he knew only love. Your demon muhammed, or however you spell that crap, promotes violence and death, this is a fact, not debateable. And i dont trust a "prophet" who gets his visions by fasting(starving himself), hallucinations are a proven effect of starvation.
I've never seen so many retarded people all in one place like that !
ANY MORON THAT CALLS THIER RELIGION A TRUE RELIGION NEEDS A LESS INTENSE HOBBY
its the people like you who cuase this stir
you said islamics are the real cuase of wrong doing not the religion
but isnt the people like you with too much passion that you want to veil the world with just ur religion
you are willing to use ti like a cloak and deny all existence of another religion, then you sir is a bigot as well
ontop of that go on reddit right now and look at the post from a friendly christian asking why an athiest disagrees with religion
they answered politely and the discussion ended
they didnt end up argueing with each other, everyon ehas thier own opinion
religion is a bitch, god is a sadistic monster, and you are no less a cuase of it
Islam is going to be the poorest country in the world...
a 3rd world country isnt judge by its economy, its by the mind set
i live in new york...if your religion isnt respected here or your beliefs that doesnt dismantle others to your own wim, you are obviously living under a rock
A true prophet is NEVER wrong. There are few true prophets. Muhammed has been wrong many times, and changed his story to fit each situation as needed. Of course, these changes to his prophecies are not publicized, but they are verifiable. Also, Allah - The God - was selected from some 700 gods to be The God. Originally they worshiped all of those gods. Allah was the moon god. Muhammed was a storyteller. Period.
Consider too that Muhammed came along some 400 years or so after Christ and revised the scriptures then disregarded the New Testament in order to make himself the "true prophet". The New Testament was written in part by men who actually lived with and walked with Jesus so why in the world would anyone take the word of someone who arrived on the scene centuries later and decided the eye witness accounts were inaccurate? He also changed the historical facts of Isaac and Ishmael. It's true that from Ismael has come a great nation, as God told Abraham would be the case, but the chosen nation, the chosen people came out of Isaac.
"Galatians 4 tells us that Ishmael had been "born according to the flesh" while Isaac had been "born according to the promise"."
Nemesis seems to fancy himself a prophet, leave him be.
ill just giggle a little like the rest of you in my sleeps
#1) I'd call Osama Bin Laden a devil, and also the beasts who flew the planes into the WTC towers. Were they not follwers of Islam?
#2) There is one true religion. Accept God Almighty as your Savior, and believe and accept that his Son, Jesus Christ, walked the earth, died for our sins on the cross, and was Resurrected.
God said It, I Believe It, That settles It.
I would rather die than be called something that I could never be. It is a religious duty of mine to speak good of islam and call people to it. If you have nothing nice to say about islam then just be quiet and let someone who has something nice to say say it. And they say that people in america respect islam. Yeah right....well I hope that maybe my words might convince someone. I dont care about the majority on this page who just slander my religion for no reason.
Some of you just astound me. Sitting at your keyboards all day just waiting to blame it on islam and muslims. Have non of you ever heard of the violence at European soccer matches? They banned it all at this point. But people dying and fights between rival clubs use to be the norm......
Nemesis-2101965 - "The Islamic religion... the true religion". I dare you...nay...double dog dare you to find a way to prove that your "true religion" is any more "true" than someone who believes that man was created divinely by a rock. Man was not given religion; he made it all up.
Arguing who's religion is more "true" is like arguing whose superhero is better and remember this well...Man has pulled more gods out of his butt than superheros.
Nemesis - I don't know who "they" are that says people in America respect Islam....."they" are full of crap! Any respect that may have ever been given to Islam collapsed the same day your religion of peace took down the Twin Towers and killed innocent people. Ya know, like my friend who was a firefighter and never made it out of his truck alive because one of the towers FELL ON IT!
So take your religion of peace and SHOVE IT!
Nemesis-2101965 - who is this "they" who says people in America respect Islam? Most Americans respect an individual's right to choose his/her religion, how they will worship - or not worship. But there is nothing out there that says Americans as a whole respect Islam. I respect people, be they Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Atheists, or whatever, but I do not respect the teachings of Islam. Islam is a lie.
I hate all religion as much as the next guy... but what does religion have to do with a soccer riot? Soccer riots happen all over the world, especially in Europe. Religion has nothing to do with it.
Excuse me, but what happened in Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada in 2011 after the Stanley Cup. Pot, this is my good friend Kettle.
What country you are from does not determine your religion, your morality, or if you actually follow it or not.
Christ in Islam was a prophet. That is how Muslims believe. Christians should respect that.
ALS, Yhwh, or Yeweh, was one of many many Jewish Gods before they elected him to be the one true god. Before that he was the Mountain God, and every bit as jealous and nasty as he is in the Old Testament.
Pots and Kettles, Pots and Kettles
John S-400329 - Haven't you figured out that all MSNBC discussions come down to politics and/or religion? :))
Overpopulation is just grand, life is cheap. Keep on screwing
rwalker-2504195 Your statement, "
ALS, Yhwh, or Yeweh, was one of many many Jewish Gods before they elected him to be the one true god." is not true. The Jews worshiped the real God, Jehovah, Yaweh, then they strayed and worshiped many false gods, then came back to the one and only true God, and they repeated that behavior many times, but Yaweh (human spelling applied) as always been the God of the bible, our Creator, none other. Either they followed God (Yaweh) alone or they followed false gods, but Yaweh was never a false god.
JMO2011, Timothy McVeigh was a Catholic. Do you hate Catholisism too?
A.L.S. - They all come down to politics...religion...or choice of smartphone. Any of those three subjects brings out the vicious in people. :)
so sad so many people died and were injured. SOME PEOPLE are crazy...
John S-400329 - religion doesn't have anything to do with the soccer riot directly, that's true. But I think that the initial comment and the reply from Nemesis set off a chain reaction - happens in every discussion though. Thing is, while it's true that there has often been crowd/fan violence associated with sports, especially soccer (football to the rest of the world), most countries don't claim to be linked as a whole to a "religion of peace" so when such things take place in an Islamic nation, it is a natural reaction to call this peaceful religion into question. Muslims in general seem to be peaceful when the situation is peaceful. Otherwise, they react like anyone else and in some cases, to the extreme specifically because of radical teachings. What that exactly has to do with this sports riot, I don't know. It's just very sad that it had to take place. Lives lost for nothing.
StMiller - we all like to exercise our freedom of speech and practice our typing skills :)
A.L.S...that is what the bible says. It doesn't go much into detail about what the hebrews were doing beforehand. You can't use a book to prove itself. The Atheists on here will eat your lunch.
rwalker - don't presume that the only reason I'm not fond of Muslims is because of 9/11. I've had other dealings with Muslims and in general the experience has never been positive. Do I wish anything bad on people whether I like them or not or agree with them or not? No, I most certainly don't. I just don't buy into lies. (ie: Islam is a religion of peace).
However, to actually answer your question, no I don't hate Catholicism.....I also don't agree with a lot of "institution" church. Which is why I am not a Catholic.
@ Nemesis;
You see Nemesis that is the difference in Islam, and Christianity, they(Christians) care about even those that slander them, and are not them, as you say you and your religion do not. Infidels as we are called.
You see to us all Muslims are not terrorist, we are not that ignorant, so a Muslim will not always be a terrorist, but we as non believers in Islam will always be infidels as far as your religion goes.
This you can not deny.
Now you tell me which religion,or people is more prejidous,Islam, or Christianity, and non believers?
JUST A REMINDER...THIS ARTICLE WAS ABOUT 70+ PEOPLE DEAD AND MANY MORE INJURED DURING A SOCCER GAME WITH ONLY A MINOR REFERENCE TO POLITICS. NOTHING ABOUT RELIGION MENTIONED (unless I missed it, of course!)
Our sincerest condolences to the grieving families of the newly dead for a reason that completely escapes my understanding. To the injured...get well soon!
Okay posters, back to the idiocy!
I feel like I just lost 10 minutes of my life for no reason reading all this drivel.
I justify it by at least posting something.
Bobby Jones Bia:
I'm with you! You said it better than I did!
rwalker-2504195 - name the scripture please so I can read it. With regard to the bible, you can use it to support itself. Why? Because it is infallible. One need only examine the historical, archaeological and prophetic evidence to arrive at the conclusion. In any case, I'd be interested in that scripture reference if you have time.
I suppose all those soccer riots by christians just don't count...
Yeah you lost 10 minutes of your life. Try spending 2 hours to protect your religion from people who slander it and slander it more as you speak. Its not fair that people call Islam evil when they themselves are evil. Its not fair that people call us killers yet we are the one's being killed. Its not fair for people to slander my religious figures yet I never slander their religious figures (Prophet Jesus pbuh to be precise). People in America hate my religion for no reason other than because some nuts went and bombed a few buildings. Is that fair to judge us and yet we are the ones being killed unjustly by the people who slander islam and call it evil? All the comments I put to defend islam get replied too by people who slander it and not only that they get many thumbs up for it. Screw this! I hope I see everyone of you who slander my religion. I hope I die a muslim so that I could laugh at everyone of you who slanders my religion.
Soccer violence is nothing new. I lived in Brasil and there were "moats" between the stands and the playing field to stop fans storming the field. Many, many deaths have occured over the years in various parts of the world between rival fans. Mosst of these were caused from the effects of stampedes where fans were crushed. British hooligans were notorious when travelling to other countries but the authorities were able to identify the principals and seemingly that has been overcome but it still happens elsewhere. Bringing "religion" into commentaries belongs in left field. This was a soccer rivalry plain and simple. Because of lack of security things boiled over. Egypt is still caught in the throes of unrest and perhaps some other factors such as regional disparity played a role. But whatever caused this must be dealt with to ensure it doesn't happen again.
Nemesis-2101965 - I don't hate Islam. I pity and pray for those who are convinced it is the truth.
Nemesis-2101965 - You whine about having to protect your religion, but you were the one who attacked first by calling your religion the only true religion. The first posting was clearly a bit of fun that poked at soccer as well as religion.
Get over yourself and stop playing the victim unless you're going for that martyr angle.
Nemesis, as you can obviously see - we aren't buying what you're selling. Go sell it somewhere else.
Coming on a public forum whether your Islamic or a Christian and calling people evil - will get you nowhere! Your last line of the above posting is you showing your religions true colors - Islam is not a religion of peace. So get over yourself.
Mohamed- DEAD PROPHET....key word being DEAD!
Nemesis,
You just have to realize ignorance will always exist in every form, in every culture, and in every religion. For many many reason. I wouldn't take it personal.
Just like Toasty said I guess riots in England and all over Europe don't count.
@ nemesis the reason we invaded Iraq instead of Korea are as follows. A: Iraq's government supported terrorists and we had just got punched in the face. B: Saddam was threatening our economic security by threatening to destabilize the export of oil . C: we put him there and there were enough convenient excuses to remove the pain in our butts that we our selves had placed. the biggest reason we didn't invade Korea is because they are backed by china who has a standing army of 1 billion and short of nukes we would be hard pressed to turn the tide of an invasion from china with our military ,which isn't nearly as large, spread out about the world enforcing our diplomatic will across the planet. China which isn't the world police doesn't have their military spread to and fro they are consolidated. Not to mention we owe china @!$%# tons of money.
oh and btw the reason no ones talking about radical christian religions over radical Islam is cuz radical Christians don't go blowing up buildings themselves and or cars to prove that we should all be righteous people who don't sex before marriage and use profanity. radical christians want to marry more then one woman and make communes where they generate crazy 'prophets' who marry young girls and have 300 kids.
Bobby Jones Bia - Riots dont really count. They happen all the time. Killing 73 people over a soccer match counts a lot. That doesnt happen all the time.
God, thanks for the news and borders .
your colors are showing. I call people evil for calling my religion evil. Read what I am saying before you judge. IS it not evil to go kill people and call them evil because of something someone else did. Americans have killed thousands of muslims for no reason other than oil and because some lunatic went and blew up the twin towers. You have talked about my Prophet (peace be upon him) yet I never mention Jesus. AND you call my religion evil look who is talking. I never cussed the christian faith once, the only thing I have against it is that you call Jesus who is a man god, when in reality he is nothing more than a prophet (peace be upon him).
StMiller
Your missing the point, Yes they do happen all the time even in England and across Europe even at soccer games. They are preformed by mostly white catholics.
So why is this riot being blamed on Islam? When riots in England are blamed on hoodlums?
Bobby Jones Bia - Nemesis isn't speaking to whether the sports riots were based on religious beliefs (i.e., Islam), he is defending the religion itself and those who speak out against Islam are not automatically ignorant. It's a fair debate and sadly, Nemesis doesn't do a very good job of defending his religion. He just whines a lot.
Nemesis --
What are you complaining about?
If Muslims are hated and killed, it is the will of Allah. How can it be otherwise? You say it is "unfair." Yet, can Allah be unfair? It is preordained, as the life of every human is ordained from birth to the moment of death by Allah. You are railing against his plan. And yet you call yourself a Muslim. Shame on you.
Nemesis - do you want some cheese with that whine?
Fake religion - dead prophet. What else is there to know?
Have a nice day.
I think what most people are missing here is religions have always battled about who is right, who is more just, and who has the best belief system.
Now what you also have to realize is man invented religion, wrote the books, spread the beliefs. So yes they are competing for a reason. Because they all want you to believe their story.
Now if you sat back and took an objective look at it, you would realize you are fighting over absolutely nothing. None of it can be proven, and all of it can be used as propaganda.
So do I expect fighting between religious beliefs to ever end? No. However a little understanding between the faiths is not too much to ask.
@ Nemesis;
Far from true and an ignorant statement, Muslims in America feel much safer than in the Mid East, get it straight sir.
How many Mosques have been bombed lately in America, Im guessing zero? How many in the Mid east, probably at least 5 or more in the past 6 months.
Im not talking about some yahoo throwing a maltov cocktail at a building,Im talking about the way mosques are bombed with worshippers in them in the Mid east, while people are preparing themselves for prayer, or leaving a service.
Once again you have it backwards sir.
is there a disclaimer on the ticket stub? Warning !!! soccer can cause fatalities among the feeble minded.
Your not following me. Of course I know that it is the Will of Allah for people to hate Islam. I am merely speaking to those who claim that we Muslims are bad. I am pointing out that to call us evil is not fair and that they should think about what I said and research our religion more thoroughly before speaking and perhaps change their thoughts. I am not trying to complain its just hard to speak to people who hate my religion. I am trying to do my job as a muslim and defend my religion. Bad as I may be at it, I will still try.
flip,
No they actually say riot at your own risk.
Ok but I will ask you this just as I will ask any religion. Why do you feel a need to "defend" something that can't even be proven as true?
It's like defending the idea that big foot exists, when there is absolutely no solid evidence. Sure sometimes it's nice to believe in things. However as we can see religion causes more problems than anything else.
Congratulations, you started a religious flamewar over soccer riots. This was NOT motivated by religion, it was motivated by...uh soccer. As was the other mentioned riots. Also, I wonder if people get a hard on for insulting other people and their beliefs over the internet
Bobby Jones Bia - by definition, truth is absolute, so there is truth to be known and anything that opposes that truth is a lie. Religion is a human institution - a structure for acknowledging a defined set of beliefs. That doesn't mean that beliefs are not true - however, not all beliefs can be true based on the definition of truth. Something cannot possibly be true (in the real sense, not the "this is my truth sense") if something that is the polar opposite is also truth just because someone believes it. There is absolute evidence for the bible being the inerrant Word of God. If that is true, than anything opposed to the Word of God is not true. Therefore, any religion that adheres to the Word of God is based on Truth and those that aren't are a manmade lie.
This naturally leads to the issue of who "wrote" the bible. Yes, it was penned by men but it is God-breathed, not because those men said so - they didn't know they were writing "the bible". Many of the writings were letters shared among believers (Jews in the Old Testament and Christians in the New Testament, many of which were Jews too). No one was trying to set up some book that would fool people over the centuries.
Yes the church had a hand in picking the canon of scripture - but that was not to filter things out they didn't like, it was a process of discernment, to include only those writings that were truly God-breathed. And there are plenty of other writings that support scripture, but they were not determined to be God-breathed scripture so they were not included in the bible. So it's not just opposed ideas that were left out. We gain a lot of history from non-canonical writings though.
The point is, if a person really cares to know, you can examine historical and archaeological evidence for the bible and see that this book stands out among all others. And it is amazing that it has been preserved for millenia unlike almost all other writings. Why, because the bible is God's love letter to the world and he made sure that it lasted.
So, a person can dismiss Christianity as just another manmade religion if they wish, but that doesn't automatically make that point true. Christianity is about living out what the bible teaches and having a one-on-one relationship with our Creator. It is not about conquering and ruling the world though throughout history, even Christianity has been used for ill-intent. Because we are all humans and are all fallible. But the fact that a person uses truth for ill-begotten purposes doesn't take away from the truth. It means that person mis-used the truth. And that is not an excuse for things that have happened at the hand of the church, but it is to say that any individual seeking truth in this world can find it, despite the fact that the truth has been abused by many.
Truth is out there for anyone who wants it.
A.L.S I wish you were capable of seeing through my eyes. I see how the world could be if people would put petty differences aside.
Coral, I found your statements horrific, and so too of others on this blog. There is a riot, and suddenly religion comes into debate? Everytime there is a murder in the US, and there are many mind you in this country, do you guys suddenly disparage "Christians, Americans and Anglos"? Would you say that the killing of 6 people and serious wounding of 13 in public in Arizona, a year ago, was a Christian problem or an American problem? Most people sanely talk about "guns, emotionally charged or mentally unwell people having access to guns, influence of Hollywood movies with violence and gore as a staple diet for the young, a culture that glorified violence as 'macho, manly and heroic'." They don't start talking or debating religion! Why do you guys do this? It is so provocative and deliberate. It almost feels like you are the ones who are religoiusly or culturally hateful.
America used to represent Blacks on TV as "dysfunctional, deviant, difficult or diabolical"...now it is Muslims. It is like some of you Americans always want someone to blame, bash and batter. If it is not women it is feminism, if it is not feminism it is Blacks, if it not Blacks it is Latinos, if it is not Latinos it is Asians, if it is not Asians it is Muslims, if it is not Muslims it is Chinese, if it is not Chinese it is Canadians...When are you guys going to stop blaming someone or some other people, culture or religion all the time?
If anyone should see anyone as crazy or dysfuntional it is the rest of the world with America - that has so much going for it...yet wastes it away in "wars, elite policies and social handouts for the rich and the banks" while some of you have nothing but stale bread, stinking butter and blogs.
So, stop this hating!
The only group that needs to be sent out to the 51st colony in the Moon are many of you men, and your stupid female devotees. May we suggest that you destroy your awful weapons, carefully and peacefully, that you have produced in huge numbers before you get on that shuttle to the Moon or the Mars. I, for one, would be happy to see many of you macho stupid clueless insensitive idiotic, moronic, insensitive, cruel hateful men disappear! Really!
Stop the hating you stupid boys and men!
Jesus Christ created Salvation for all. "Believe on me and you will be saved".
Man created religion for himself.
Matt 7:20 says about teachers of salvation: By their fruits you will know them. That's good enough for me.
God said the way you judge will be the way he will judge you.
My advise, whether you take it or leave it, "Walk the Talk".
nemesis -
Well, I'm an American. I think it's been well-established that Americans are not the ones to advise regarding how to win hearts and minds. Even so, I suspect you're not going about it the right way.
Personally, I'm convinced that extra-terrestrials created us.
rwalker-2504195 - I absolutely agree, but the issue of Truth is not a petty issue.
Don't forget all the other books that used to be in existence that have been burned and destroyed over the centuries. Books burned by people who simply didn't agree with them.
Those books could have been just as "true". I was raised catholic, I have heard, read, and seen all I need to. After 18 years of exposure to religion, I made up my own mind.
If there is a God and he doesn't want me in heaven because I didn't want to believe the rhetoric of religion that uses people as pawns to achieve goals for centuries, I'm ok with that. I have had my fair share of politicians here on Earth.
While I agree with the ten commandments, they are pretty simply common sense. That's why religion was created. To bring people together with like ideas for safety in numbers. Life was a lot different in the time of "prophets", they were politicians for their cause.
I think everyone is free to belief as they like, I am not going to tell someone who is wrong or right. We all have different thoughts and views.
Cpt. Porkchop - you are correct in that the riot wasn't motivated by religious beliefs but one would think that those who subscribe to a "religion of peace" would control their sports fervor instead of beating people to death.
@ Dr.Ms.
Yes doctor, horrificly true, much horror has came from this idealogy, and this truly can not be argued with.
There is no hate in my statement, only truth. I am very well versed on the religion of Islam, I respect all beliefs.
Whoa! Didn't think that post would generate this level of discussion!
StMiller was correct - I was poking fun at the entire situation, perhaps not so subtly, by suggesting an overlap between three potentially violent 'things' in the region: religion, culture, and soccer.
A culture and religion that seems predisposed towards violence (towards itself, amazingly) in the region doing something like this over a soccer match is just sad and unfortunate.
I was not intending to start a flame war over prophets or beliefs.
But, when was the last time you saw that many people killed at a baseball game in the US?
Our family has absolutely no interest in sports, thank goodness. (Except fencing I guess.)
Nemesis-2101965 - You're the one missing the point. Read the very first post here...that post was clearly a teasing poke at soccer and religion and culture. Venn diagram...read about it. He's teasing with something that is not some blatant nasty attack on Islam as you say. You immediately follow that with a post that is nothing more than an all out attack on anyone who isn't muslim. You flatout say..."Islam...is the true religion". How can you be so on the attack and then immediately act the victim?!? "Oh...everyone is attacking me and my religion." blah blah blah.
For arguments sake...let's say the first post was a horrible mean-spirted unfounded attack on your religion. You then argue that you can say bad things about other religions and others because "he started it". Are you in the 3rd grade? I can understand that argument if you are.
I wasn't saying that there was support for my argument in the bible, I was saying that you are using arguments from the bible to support its own statements. That is an invalid argument. I appreciate your strength of faith, but the book you proport to be infallable was written by those who wished to control and profit from other people who are willing to be led. I have tried to believe as you do but alas I cannot. The real truth is that people are willing to do and say anything they can to improve their standard of living. The real truth is that people who win the wars write history, and they cut and paste as they see fit to suit history to their liking. The truth is we are only slightly better off than our cousin the ape, and that until we throw off our shackles and find our own truths we will be slaves to the powers that be, where that be your preacher, policeman, soldier, or politician. Stop looking to other people to feed you answers. They will feed you the ones that benefit themselves the most. Find your own truth. Don't look in some book. Don't ask it of any other person. The truth is inside of yourself when you speak from a place of truth and love to yourself. It is a very private and personal thing. It isn't something you share screeching up and down the isle of a church, or from atop a political soapbox. When you find real truth it will strike you like lightning. Keep it in you heart and nurture the spark into a flame. Your life will never be the same.
Americans have other things to do, If we were stuck in a desert, with no job, no opportunity, and not much hope. You would see a lot more riots when the Yankees lose.
Look at hockey fans in Canada, they flip and burn cars after loses. When Miami lost last year in basketball there were riots there as well.
Bobby Jones Bia - yes, everyone has the right to believe whatever they choose to believe. No doubt. But that doesn't mean that what everyone believes is true. And yes, many other writings of truth may have been lost/burned/destroyed throughout history, however, if they were actually truth, they were in agreement with bible, not opposed to it. One truth because truth is absolute. If I say the sky it purple and you say it's red but in fact it's blue, neither of us has spoken the truth. If I say it's red and you say it's blue, and it is in fact blue, you have spoken truth. Religion can confound us, no doubt. But remember that religion is supposed to be built on the truth, it doesn't establish the truth. So where man falls short in his religion, as we ALL do, the truth remains steadfast. Though I am in disagreement with many things taught by the Catholic church, Catholicism does have the bible and Jesus Christ at it's core so I hope that whatever it is that turned you off, you can put aside, and dig down to that core, to the truth, and not be distracted by the blunders that all of us people make in the name of truth. Remember, we don't define what is truth, truth stand no matter what. Go back and find it because in truth, if you do die without it, you will not be "ok" with your place in eternity.
Be well, be blessed. I'm outta here! Signing off. Good discussion. Hang in there Nemesis :)
Timothy McVeigh was a Catholic. Do you hate Catholisism too?
Of course and just to shorten the conversation add all other religions which are BS
Just people being people. Can't wait till the earth evicts us all. Or we just kill each other off. The dinasaurs lasted longer then we will and they weren't that smart. Time will tell.
Those people are so sick over there...no wonder they suffer so much.
ALS, Either you did not read the article or your comprehension skills are a reflection of your intelligence. Although judging by your comments, your fanaticism puts you in the latter category. The worst soccer riot ever was in Lima, Peru - last I checked Islam was not very prevalent there. And in the 1996 incident was in a game between Guatemala and Costa Rica, both predominantly Christian countries.
Face it, all religions have blood on their hands. It's the promise of any after-life (with or without virgins) that undermines the value of life.
@ nemesis:
I can see that you are clearly a moderate muslim, not an extremeist. There are many moderate muslims that are indeed peaceful people. Sadly though, the Quran and muhammad, along with Islam itself is NOT peaceful. That is the plight that moderate muslims face. Infact, the quran has nothing nice to say about moderates either, it refers to them as "hypocrits."
The Quran goes on to state that in paradise (often referred to as "The Hereafter")muslims will be able to look down on infidels, jews, and gentile christians and watch them be tortured so that they may laugh and mock them as part of their reward.
The Quran states that Jihad is clearly a physical holy war, not a war within oneself. This is evident in that the Quran says all muslims are to take part in Jihad save for the blind, the sick, and the lame. Think about it, you dont need to be able to walk, see, or be in perfect health to fight a war within oneself, but you do need to be all of the above for a physical war, which is exactly what the Quran meant by Jihad.
Muhammad preached an afterlife of indulgence to his followers in order to get them to fight ardently for his cause. Muhammad himself, when he was in his late 30s or early 40s married a NINE YEAR OLD girl. That is like taking your daughter to bed.
And in closing, if you are making a point that Islam is indeed the religion of peace, why is your name "Nemesis"?
Why can't we all just get along? Religion, politics, money, sex, place of origin, and racism. Take your pick.
Josh Ritchie, you are suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
peteMT:
Lookit what you started ya smirking lit'l troll!
It was another peaceful love filled day for Islam today, allot of Allah's children were granted early access to paradise this day, and they will no longer have to suffer under the tyranny of the Christan's and the Jews and the atheist. and because they died in loving combat they will all get 70 virgins apiece! remember if it happened its Allah's will, if its going to happen its Allah's will, nothing happens unless Allah wishes it to. its Allah's will.
Nemesis, people do speak out against christianity. I speak out against all religions. None of them are blameless. I don't want to hear about your peace infused lies and I don't want to hear about someone telling you their savior is better than yours. Both religions make no sense, I grew up around christians and found them to be the dumbest people on the planet. I have known muslims and they run a close second. All religions combined are responsible for more suffering than anything. Yes some churches and some individual people associated with churches have done great good but they are few and far between and do nothing to increase my Faith in a God who would allow such atrocities to be commited in His name.
peteMT - this was a soccer match riot, such as have happened in many other parts of the world, including England and parts of Europe.
Just in case actual facts are important to you.
http://soccerlens.com/football-violence-worst-football-riots/23093/
Just because people in Egypt are acting badly, it is not always because of religion. Sometimes they are just being human beings, and we all know what stinkers people can be ...all people, of any religion.
WHY is everyone making this about religion?
It was a Soccer Riot.
Soccer riots have happened in a lot of European countries also.
For those bashing muslims, this had NOTHING to do with Islam any more than the English soccer fans have anything to do with Christianity. To bring that up was and is bigotry.
Having said that, I'm sure those I am calling bigots are proud of it. That's the sad state in our country today.
Those Christians condemning Islam for having violence in the Quran should re-read their bible. There's plenty of violence, to the point of demanding that the armies bring back a sack full of foreskins of the "other" people...meaning those not of my tribe.
All religions are primitive. Just tribal stuff, Christianity, Jewish and Muslim, all just primitive tribal mumbo jumbo. Daniel Day Lewis had it right in the last scene of "There Will be Blood", but he shouldn't have killed the jerk.
Like people didn't riot after the Lakers won a title or Paterno got fired. While the deaths are alarming, we have to remember that everyone else does this every now and then when it comes to sports. If they riot, let them riot. People here in Texas aren't really accustomed to Oklahoma beating the Longhorns...
What is it with soccer???
@Josh Ritchie - The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance but the illusion of knowledge...I feel sad for you...you think you have done research and by that you mean you have visited a dozen anti-Islam sites whose sole purpose is to misquote and misrepresent the Qur'anic verses and put them out of context. Muslims have set up websites telling the proper context of these so-called violent verses...go to google and search" commonly misquoted verses" and read up the first load-islam link. Any book can be made to look violent by selective quoting and by not presenting the proper context. Let me show you how it is done with the Bible:
Isaiah 13:16 "Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished."
Deuteronomy 13:15 "Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly . . . "
Luke 19:27 Jesus said, "But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me."
So spare a thought and do some REAL research. I wouldn't go out and tell off my Christian friends after doing "research" on anti-Christianity websites. If you wanna learn about a religion learn it from those who practice it and those who have proper knowledge of it.
There's a lot of pent up anger out there. What does it take to release it? A soccer game? A jury verdict?
We can't assume that anyone - regardless of religion or culture - is immune to such behavior.
It just takes 'less' to set off some than others.
People who say it is not the religion that is bad its the people are only half right. I'm not religious but I haven't seen people of other religions blow them selves up and have a total disregard for human rights as much as Islam. There is obviously something in the religion that incites acts of evil among fellow humans.
The followers of religion of love and peace don't know how to maintain peace in a Muslim nation either.
They should take guns and bombs and eliminate the rivals to establish true peace! Don't leave a single one of your opponent. Eliminate his family too.
Then there will be true peace in a Muslim nation!
I find it hard to trust a faith that is directed to kill all non-believers (atheists, agnostics, christians, jews, etc.)
Islam is the religion of peace, and if you say it isn't they will kill you
(I of course realize there are many modern muslims who don't adhere strictly to the violent Medinan suras, but there is a vast majority that still feel Islam should reign supreme and a threateningly large number who would like to achieve that goal violently).
Veni--
How do you know it's the religion rather than the culture? "Culture" isn't a good word for what I'm trying to say, but I can't think of a better word.
Muslims completely ignore the Qur'an, you know. Most of the horrifying verses from the Qur'an that Christian fundamentalists love to quote really are taken out of context. There is nothing in the Qur'an that is any more horrifying than what you'll find in the Bible. Christians like to counter that argument by claiming that the New Testament is the only part that counts, but if you're a woman, the Qur'an is more supportive of women's rights than Paulianity.
But all that is a moot point because the vast majority of Muslims do not follow Islam at all. They should actually be called Haddithians because they really follow the Haddith rather than the Qur'an.
The Haddith is a body of writings that were expressly forbidden by the Prophet and by the Qur'an. When I try to explain the Haddith, I always become tongue-tied. I have not read every ancient manuscript in the world, but I cannot imagine that there is anything anywhere as disgusting, ridiculous, or vile as the Haddith. It is something far worse than primitive, and if there is such a thing as pure evil in this world, that would be the Haddith. It is drool from Satan's lips, and I don't even believe in Satan.
I think this is the core problem we have in dealing with terrorism. Islam is not a bad religion, as religions go. And Americans believe in religious freedom. However, the vast majority of those claiming to follow Islam are actually following a different "religion" and that religion, Haddithianism, is incredibly sick by any human standard. Its followers are capable of committing any atrocity, up to and including eating their own babies. (I speak figuratively, but nothing these animals do would surprise me.) If a normal human being can read the Haddith for more than one hour without becoming totally disgusted, I take my hat off to him. He must be a saint.
This religion, these people have yet to evolve. If they can't kill the infidel they have to kill someone, might as well kill people you root for a different soccer team as they sure as hell kill anyone who doesn't believe in Mohammed and their weird religion. One sick group of folks!
Agreed, bunch on looney tunes over there, and muslims for the most part dont even drink... Not long from now your comment will be sensored by the blind, politicaly correct community. I give it an hour...
If it wasn't for the regions Oil Reserves it would be a wasteland. I pray their Oil runs out soon
Hmmmm...
You'd be surprised how many of them drink
I would be surprised if they were really muslim. There are lot of people who claim to be muslims but do not behave that way in the slightest bit. Muslims are how they practice islam not how they behave impudently. If you see people claiming to be muslims and not behaving that way does not mean that they are a representative sample of muslims. People dont sit there and claim david crash to be a representative of christian faith do they? Same applies to bad muslims
You are casting pearls before swine Nemesis. Most of these people will claim christianity, but have no idea what Christ was all about.
Nemisis:
Muslim = death to the infidel. Infidel = anyone that doesn't believe what you believe or doesn't act as you act or does not uphold the customs that you uphold.
Are you Sunni, Shiite or what? Explain why your "religion of peace" is used as an excuse to murder, maim, and desecrate. Or is it that there are so many unbeliever Muslims??
Salaam alaikum. What a joke!!!
Oh yes and this countries thirst for sports is not much better. But you go ahead and say it is their religion that caused this. What a fool you are if you believe that.
i think its the fault of the guy that appeared in my dogs ass like on my profile picture that they called jeses son of ...? all men the bastard
If you are a quarter as smart as you think you are, then you should be capable of reading this article:
boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2009/03/08/dark_passages
btw, this had nothing to do with religion. Absolutely nothing.
The bigots are in force today. The religion and culture of peace and democarcy traget defensless children. Chritsianity teaches molestation and deciet. Priests are good at it because they know the religion best.
Chrstian soldiers are by the thousands in muslim countries committing genocide against the locals, iraq, afghanistan, yemen, pakistan..etc Its the christians who are killing the muslim infidels, and molesting their own kids.
http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/02/01/10289454-disgusted-beyond-belief-parents-shaken-by-ex-calif-teachers-molestation-charges?pc=25&sp=50&threadId=3334848#discussion_navs.
Excuse me, but how in Earth did this jump from violence in a soccer match to blaming Islam? Seriously people, if you love so much to blame some random religion, just go and find a religious article, because it is totally off topic here.
Religion has nothing to do with this. More a case of young men, high unemployment, and sports teams affiliated with political parties. When I lived in the UK as a teen, I wasn't ever allowed to go to football games because the hoodlums used the games as an excuse to get drunk, start fights, and engage in general mayhem. Not a venue for the educated, the employed, and the upper crust. I am guessing it is much the same in Egypt.
And since were are here, please let me share a story with you, especially you nemesis.
There was once a king in his deathbed. He had three sons and one of them was to be his successor after his death. The king had a royal ring which symbolized his power and the son to receive the ring would be the next king. The father, however, was unable to choose between his sons, therefore he ordered for 2 more identical rings to be created and secretly gave one to each son.
After the king's death, the princes were all claiming the throne, since each of them had a ring, only one of the rings was the real one though. However, since the rings were identical, it was impossible to determine which one was the true one, and this conflict continues to this day.
Moral of the story: There is one true religion, but we cannot possibly know which one. It is impossible, end of story. So just stick to the one you like the most and leave others alone. When the time comes, we will all know the truth, if it isnt all a lie in the first place. And no, it isnt your duty to convert others, this is not only aimed at muslims but also christians who are well known for doing it. Your duty is simple, follow the morals and have a good life, use religion as a guide if you want.
Best regards from Sinned.
@Lord Sinned
That has got to be one of the wisest parables I've heard in a long while. Now, if everyone could only understand the moral of the story and apply it, then we would all be safer for it.
And they say American Football is violent...
Rieeeeeght?
Ohhh don't worry, something like this will happen soon enough.
Something like this will never happen because we have stadiums designed to prevent possible stampedes, well trained security forces, and a fan base that has relatively entertaining lives outside of a sports game (land of opportunity!)
Welcome to Egypt on February 1, 2012 where frustrations are spilling over into soccer matches. If there are no Jews and no Christians then the Muslims attack themselves.
So true...so true
I see little but pure xenophobia on these pages. This could happen anywhere given the right circumstance and if you notice it has happened before. Doubtful those were Muslims involved in those previous incidents mentioned. But this board turned into an anti-Islam rant anyway.
Apparently most of you understand nothing of the fervor that is involved with soccer fandom. And the less one has in life the bigger it seems to become.
IMj3-
Can Christians live without killing Muslims just for one day? NEVER. JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THE CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS (aka CRUSADERS) by the thousands in Muslim countries committing genocide against the locals (IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN, YEMEN, PAKISTAN) in accordance with the teaching of Christainity, the cult of child pornography and molestaion.
The Jews living in Egypt were driven out and now the Muslims are driving out the Christians.
Assyrian International News Agency reported on Tuesday that 3000 Muslims attacked Christian Homes and shops in the village of Kobry-el-Sharbat in Egypt.
None of the news agencies picked it up to report on because it is not news.
http://www.aina.org/news/20120127193942.htm
It gets better. Egypt is accusing Amercia and Israel of being responsible for the riot.
http://www.memritv.org/clip/en/3299.htm
Gotta love the Middle East..............................
its like a lion cage abandoned in the middle of the desert.
this is another form of cannibalism?
Soccer riots happen in Western countries also...
What does the Middle East have to do with it?
Yet no one can bet the Americans for hypocrisy.
Cassie321: What in the world is your comment supposed to mean? You have never, never, ever in your life heard of this level of violence and bloodshed over a sports event in the U.S. I am old, black, and gay, so I certainly don't think that our American society is perfect, but my Lord---over a SOCCER game? We've had cars overturned, windows broken, stores looted and such after feverish football or basketball or even hockey games, but scores of people KILLED? Please give me even one example, and I'll apologize to you.
How can you possibly compare hypocrisy to the idiotic actions of those soccer fans? Your statement if truly ignorant!
Yet, I don't recall a riot killing dozens of people after a Padres-Rockies game. Just doesn't happen here.
Trust me, something like that could happen here. The difference is we have a greater security presence.
Don-1177272....fyi
The 1990 Detroit Pistons riot is probably the only sports-related North American melee that can even compare to the terrifying soccer riots abroad. That year, after the Detroit Pistons won the NBA championship against the Portland Trail Blazers (pictured), seven people died. Hundreds were injured—not by tear gas. Not by ... stepping on shattered glass. But by gunfire and stabbings. Ruckus ensued until 140 people were arrested, branding Detroit as one of the scariest sports cities in America.

Okay, fair enough. There was a really bad riot that left seven people dead. And that's terrible.
The Egyptians beat that "score" by a factor of ten.
Forget religion. I worry about the fanaticism surrounding sports. Christ people, it's just a bunch of guys kicking around a ball! Why should anybody have to get hurt over that?
Though I still don't know what Cassie is going on about with "hypocrisy". Doesn't seem to have anything to do with this.
Thinking..
I happened to have been living in Portland at that time, and I remember that Detroit incident very well. But again I ask you or anyone else to give me even ONE example of this level of violence triggered by a sporting event in this country.
Could it happen here? Yes, possibly...I wouldn't say "absolutely not," but I think it's very unlikely. Why, even our race riots don't rise to (or, more accurately, sink to) this level. There is just a very different view of individual human beings and their worth here. I attribute that more to the cultures than to the religions of the Middle East (or here). Many of the cultural attitudes that we deplore in that part of the world were firmly in place centuries before Muhammad came along. And many of the cultural attitudes that certain Westerners manifest have absolutely nothing to do with Judaeo-Christianity. So let's denounce the stupid, idiotic, irrational behavior of certain svage individuals, no matter from what religious group or part of the world they're from!
In the Muslim world you can never forget about religion. The religion was crafted as a policy for unifying and governing conquered people. There is no separation between church and state, The pursuit and attack on rival fans was at its heart political and therefore also religious.
The mayans sacrificed the entire loosing team. I think we may be moving up in the world :)
Or the winning team. Archeologists aren't sure. And yes, it was a blood-shedding country. But it had better clean water, waster removal systems, transportation, artisans, calendar creators, weavers, etc. etc. while the people in Europe wore skins and had no concept of "city." BUT -- I do agree that we may be moving up -- but looking around at all the hate and all the killing in the world, I kind of doubt it.
The following stats are for the HYPOCRITES, XENOPHOBES AND ISLAMOPHOBES WHO NEVER MISS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BLAME ISLAM FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING.
May 24, 1964 - Lima, Peru; 318 people are killed and another 500 injured in riots at National Stadium after Argentina beats Peru in an Olympic qualifying match. The pandemonium breaks out when the referee disallows a Peruvian goal in the final two minutes.
March 4, 1971 - Salvador, Brazil; A fight and a wild rush broke out in the grandstands, killing four and injuring 1,500.
Feb. 17, 1974 - Cairo, Egypt; Crowds attempting to enter a club game broke down barriers and 49 people were trampled to death.
Oct. 31, 1976 - Yaounde, Cameroon; After a penalty kick was awarded to Cameroon in a World Cup qualifying match vs. the Congo, the Congolese goalie attacked the Gambian referee. A fight broke out and the president of Cameroon, watching the game at home on television, sent in paratroopers by helicopter. Two bystanders died.
Dec. 6, 1976 - Port-au-Prince, Haiti; At a World Cup qualifier between Haiti and Cuba, the visitors scored and a Haitian fan set off a firecracker. Fans thought it was gunfire and panicked, knocking down a soldier, whose gun went off and killed a small boy and girl in the crowd. Further panic caused two people to be trampled to death, and one man died jumping over a wall. The soldier committed suicide.
Oct. 20, 1982 - Moscow; 340 are reportedly killed at a European Cup match between Soviet club Spartak Moscow and Haarlem of the Netherlands. Police are blamed for pushing fans down a narrow, icy staircase before the end of the match. When a late goal is scored, exiting fans try to re-enter the stadium and create a “human mincer.” Moscow officials dispute the claims made in the publication of the Soviet Sports Committee, saying only 61 died and police did not push fans.
May 29, 1985 - Brussels, Belgium; 39 people are killed at the European Champions Cup Final at Heysel Stadium when riots break out and a wall separating rival fans of England’s Liverpool and Italy’s Juventus of Turin collapses.
March 10, 1987 - Tripoli, Libya; 20 people are killed when panic-stricken fans flee knife-wielding ruffians and trigger the collapse of a wall. (This report conflicted with those from the Libyan state news agency JANA, which said two people were killed and 16 were hospitalized.)
Jan. 13, 1991 - Orkney, South Africa; at least 40 people are killed, most of them trampled or crushed along riot-control fences that surround the field, when fans panic and try to escape brawls that break out in the grandstand.
July 14, 1996 - Tripoli, Libya; A riot at a soccer match involving a team controlled by a son of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi killed or injured up to 50 people. No exact figures were reported in the Libyan-controlled press.
April 23, 2000 - Monrovia, Liberia; At least three reported dead and others injured as thousands of fans forced their way into an overcrowded stadium for a World Cup qualifier between Liberia and Chad.
July 9, 2000 - Harare, Zimbabwe; Thirteen people died after a stampede at World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Zimbabwe

The Arab Spring is beginning to smell of ...
These people are worse than cavemen. Can't even have a fun day without killing each other, or is it not fun if nobody get's killed? The only good news is that they killed each other.
I often think the same of those who arrive on my Native American shores.
Those that arrived on your native shores are a waaayyyyy better class of people by far!!
EyeswideOpen (shut), get over yourself. If you're Native American, then acknowledge that you're a defeated people! This country was conquered and developed into a great nation. Just what kind of place would this be had the Europeans not come here? I don't agree with the way the natives were treated . Move on with your life and stop being bitter towards something that happened decades ago! How about working to end the problems amoung the native peoples? Drugs, alcohol and incest are major problems on the reservations! This is coming from a third generation Cherokee. Fortunately, my ancestors had sense enough to leave the reservation!
Well put smartkid.
Nicely said Smartkid......Eyeswideopen.......stop living in the past. Life is what you make it......stop complaining and do something to impove the situation on the reservations.
Smartkid, I'm wondering if you'd say the same thing to the black americans who talk about living in 200 years of slavery? Have you ever been out west to see how the Native American have to live now?
The thing about the Native Americans is that they never have and never will declare themselves a defeated people. They are a people whose ancestors were deceived and lied to by your white european people.
John Skaggs, one has nothing to ddo with the other. lol
Sarah, it has to do with the fact that smartkid said 'they should get on with their life and stop complaining about what happened in the past.' Black people are always talking about slavery that happened in the past.
Get it now? That's why I made the comment.
Smartkid
You made a racist comment by inferring that drugs booze and incest are rampant on reservations. It is like saying all Catholics are pedophiles. FYI American society is filled with all the things you listed, not so sure Incest is anywhere must be your paranoia. As far as the Indians getting over it, remember that when we lose our great nation from on day. Just because "we" won and conquered does not make it right, it was wrong to force these people off their lands nothing you can say will convince me otherwise. You dumbkid are a bigot.
Smartkid, do you suppose the Cherokee (Tsalagi) are defeated because all their young braves don't believe in their ancestor's honor anymore? It is unfortunate that your and my ancestors didn't listen to Tecumseh before it was too late.
I live for tomorrow not the past. I will never acknowledge defeat for this Land is my gift from God. All Holy Books dictate man's outcome. I walk with God daily yet I am human too with the same dislikes, loves as everyone. I hope each of you and the whole Nation would take the same approach with Faith and look at something greater than your Faith, which by the way is a good foundation. Surely, you will answer to God for your every statement as will I. God provides for me. Shaman will unite and only by instruction from God will I protect non-Natives. That is my greatest sin. And yes, I have read the Holy Books from multiple cultures cover to cover.
EyesWideOpen, I try to live my life as a spiritual warrior. Living in such a world makes it probably the hardest thing I can imagine. I try to spread truth and light wherever I can. The only problem I have with your statement is that you will only protect white brother when Creator instructs you to. Careful there...creator put all all in the same boat. The medicine path is there for anyone who wants it. Sometimes people don't know what they want, and they have to be helped. When my mentor took me under his wing, he only saw a white boy. He didn't know that I had native blood and it sang strongly in me. We have been strong friends and brothers since then, almost 15 years now. Sometimes your most powerful ally will appear to be an enemy at first
Hey William, it wasn't religion that caused this. It was rabid sports fans who carry the game too far. You righties have no sense of logic at all, but blame all of Islam for the actions of a few. Christians have their radical killers as well.
but not a stadium full of tens of thousands ready to go on a rampage at the drop of a hat... your comparison is empty...
but not a stadium full of tens of thousands ready to go on a rampage at the drop of a hat... your comparison is empty...
They were acting like a bunch of liberals who lost the presidency!
Exactly, Hobbes. People don't want to acknowledge that Christians have killed more people throughout history, often in the name of religion, than every other religion combined. I'm not a religious person, so I hold no allegiance to either group, but people don't want to remember the sins of their own, so they shove their heads in the sand (or up their asses, in the case of many of these comments). And those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
"People don't want to acknowledge that Christians have killed more people throughout history, often in the name of religion, than every other religion combined." A broad statement....sources for your "proof"? I hear it on here all the time, but no one gives any reference as to how they came to that conclusion other than that's what they want to believe. Chapter and verse, please.
bagdadjoe, the list starts with Pope Constantine. It is a long and gruesome list. The last entry on the list is the American/Afghanistan war. That is if you consider the US to be a "christian" country.
What were the Egyptians of BC time who enslaved the Israelites for 430 years? (600,000)
or what religion was Hitler? Who killed millions of Jews
or what religion killed the Russian Jews?
People need to live their lives accordingly, with kindness.
Actually, hatred is no respector of what race you are.
There is a PEACE that Passes All understanding.
Rwalker, get your history straight, Constantine was NEVER a Pope, for heaven's sake.
Molly. He was the first christian emperor of the holy roman empire. He had a coin. He ruled the church. Looks like a pope. Walks like a pope. Sounds like a pope...probably a pope.
What is this world coming too, this is a damm shame.
Soccer wars?! They may be on to something, let's wait and see.
I love how everyone is all like, "these people" this and "these people" that. They are humans. We all are. And as long as we are killing each other, we are all equally pathetic.
Not really, no.
There are potentially plenty of good reasons to kill someone. There's also plenty of disagreement as to what exactly is a "good reason" and what isn't, but anyone who says that killing a person is always and irrevocably wrong belongs to a small and naive minority.
But I can't believe anybody thinks the outcome of a sports match is a reason for someone to be killed. And if they did, that might just be a justification to off them.
Give your moral equivalency a rest. This is not about you or any of your fellow citizens. This is another example of a society spirally out of control, easily enraged, and apparently avid to destroy.
CFarinha, people don't like to identify people who behave badly. I agree with you 100%. I don't think there is any real reason to do murder to anyone for any reason. When you make people really think about it and have to claim those actions as their own, there is some disconnect, "don't lump me in with those people" so that they can protect themselves from the other party's human condition. I hope that things in this country don't spin out of control so we don't have to see these things first hand. I don't think people really understand how close to the edifice we really are.
SF accountant, would you mind giving one or two of these "good reasons" to kill a person?
Just plain stupid, but for those blaming this on Islam, get a clue. Brazilians, English, Irish etc. have been known to riot after, or during, games. And let's not forget the Brian Stowe incident. Americans aren't above this foolishness either.
Although, the Stowe incident involved a few people with one person being beaten. Not 72+ dead, so it is not in the same ballpark really. Silly soccer fans.
I thought that this sort of activity only happened when English soccer fans were in the game.
You thought wrong, soccer riots are all over the world. Get educated.
lol, breaking world news? this happens ever 5 min over there. good thing they are on the other side of the planet. stupid animals, evolve already.
*cough* Vancouver Stanley cup riots *cough*
Come on, Tandin! You know that we Westerners NEVER behave like animals! Never!
I believe they have broken the record previously held by the excellent fans of Manchester United. It's only entertainment people.
Jesus is the truth, the life and the way. Sooner or later, God's enemies will give themselves away. People are who they are. I don't trust anyone who finds out who Christ really is and does not love Him. Just get in the first 4 chapters of the new testament and you will see what I mean if you do not already have a personal relationship with Him. Jesus is so awesome and is exactly who He says He is. He preached love and forgiveness and there are many people who claim to follow Him, but obviously do not.
Jesus?......the mexican gardener down the street? what does he have to do with a riot in Egypt?
You do not know anything about "Prophet" Jesus (peace be upon him). God Almighty never had a son. Why would he choose a son when he could send a man to spread religious faith? (which is what happened anyway). It would be like someone trying to dress up like a lamb to guide lambs to their feeding grounds when all I need to do is just put a sheperd to guide them. I promise you that Jesus (peace be upon him) would destroy the cross when the time comes for him to return. Jesus (peace be upon him) said it himself in one of the christian books of faith "I did not come here to disrupt the message of the prophets". All the prophets preached of one god, not Jesus (peace be upon him) as god.
People like Nemesis and Carol are the reason why we have a constitutional separation of church and state...
NO, people like you are the example of ignorance that is prevalent in this country.
Nemesis - Thank you for validating my point...
NO thank you for confirming that my words have fallen on deaf ears like my religion has taught me. And that men like you continue to ignore what is right and follow what is wrong. Too bad..
Nemesis - the God Carol is speaking of does have a son - He is of the God Head - three in one! But it's a spiritual concept that those who reject the one TRUE God do not understand. Jesus himself said "I am the way, the truth, and the light. No man comes to the Father except through me!" He spoke of himself as being sent from God and as God (not a god). He said, "When you have seen me, you have seen the Father (God). So don't go telling Christians who have a personal relationship with Jesus what we know and don't know! You're ignorant of our ways! Until you accept the light of the Good News then you have no part in this and will spend eternity in Hell if you do not accept Jesus as the one and only true God. God loves you and wants you to come into fellowship with Him.
AMEN Carol!
Smartkid - well said, although it will fall on deaf ears!
Ah, "ignorance"...about something that is based on faith and on very little that's tangible. Good job there, Nemesis.
Yeah well I do not expect you to understand. I expect someone smarter too. If you want the exact info you can look it up on google if you want smart guy
Look WHAT up on Google? Your religious beliefs? Oh yeah, they're on Google, Nemesis is right! Man, you are a total d***, have I every told you that?
Nemesis--so since we're the infidels, you're going to hunt us all down and kill us now, right? That's also what your religion teaches you.
No, We do not hunt anyone down. Its amazing you say that when America is the one hunting down muslims under the title of terrorist and insurgents. We never hunted you down. Americans hate muslims and they are the one's who are bad not us. IF you do not believe me look at my comment that was collapsed by the community. All I said was that Islam is good and yet you people shut me down. I WIN
Nemesis, please don't go down the path these folks are leading you down. Their hate is unquenchable. I was raised as a christian, but the denomination I was raised under tried to teach us respect for other belief systems. We were taught if someone believes in a higher power, then they are redeemable, but it is up to them and their creator. The people on here will use whatever they can against you instead of trying to find points in common between the two belief systems. Don't let their extremism bring out the same in yourself.
These Egyptian fans are almost as nasty as the San Francisco fans!
So Smartkid the truth and the life is what you believe. Good you have faith, but that is all it is, faith, you and no one else can prove what you believe is correct and right from what someone else who has the same strong faith in some other belief or religion. My take on religion is it is used to control man, faith can't. A fine line when deciding which one to follow, mans interpretation such as a pastor or Gods. Muslims believe in faith just as strong as you and so do the Jews. To say we will go to hell if we do not believe what you believe is not the God of love and you can keep him.
If...
There is no God but God
God is all powerful, omniscient, omnipresent.
Everything under creation comes from God
...
Uh, then how can God have 'enemies'?
how can God need defending?
how can there be more than one understanding of God?
...
Given this current definition of God, even he would be fired by government unions for incompetence.
Really seems like all our religions regarding God would work fine if we believed that there were multiple Gods fighting each other. Then all of our holy wars and social disagreements would at least have some philosophical basis for belief. Now why hasn't mankind thought of that before? Oh wait, we have. May be we forgot the need to forget those old beliefs.
And just what does all this prosyletzing have to do with soccer riots?
Jesus is WHAT???
Much violence could be avoided if all sports and religions were banned.
Much violence could be avoided if there weren't so many STUPID people in the world. It's not about religion or sports - it's about the status of mankind! Get rid of the human race and the world will be peaceful - but oh, that's not right - even the animal kingdom is involved in violent behavior in order to survive. Without mankind here to feed all the "domesticated" animals, they'd soon be preying on one another...
Sure, and additional violence could be avoided if we banned planes, trains, and automobiles. Think of the reduction in fatal accidents! We could then ban soap in the shower in order that slips may be prevented. Cutting down all the trees would ensure that none fell on homes or cars during a storm. Hey, I know, let's outlaw storms, too!
Much violence could also be avoided if all politics, ethnicities, borders, money, and property/asset ownership were banned as well.
They should ban stupid ideas. Like the one you just presented.
I think cell phones, and the internet cause violence. Look at all the hate on this forum! I also blame obama...and am surprised i'm the first to do so!
Comment # 20 deleted, death trolling derail.
Sorry Smartkid , but in response to your statement "All the Stupid people ", Only one thing can be proven , Darwinism is wrong ... Stupidity can't be bred out of a species. Humans are proof
a riot is the only action in that silly a$$ "sport" to begin with so isn't a riot mandatory just to wake up the "fans"?
Does anyone here REALLY find this shocking? It's a way of life for these people. Stupid is as stupid does.
Islam has nothing to do with it. Soccer fans are nuts. No matter where you go. They just love the kill. Look at the rowdies in England and Spain etc etc etc. For Christ sakes. They act like some one just killed their Mothers.
Sure you get some fans from other sports that fight or jump some one but not like these a$$ holes.
soccer fans are stupid...if you're a soccer fan..you;re stupid...yes..stupid!!
As an aerospace engineer and a major Seattle Sounders fan, this is good to know. :-)
In your case it looks like stupid knows stupid very, very well.
WOW! I had no idea that Oakland Raider fans attend Egyption soccer matches...Dang!
HAHAHA....Good one!
What were they trying to be....Irish?? :)
azrancher
the soccer idiots come from Manchester, UK. they are so bad the UK has been banned from participation
over the years to world events. i assume you need to ride a horse instead of being a horse's ***
no wonder they dont allow women at football games over there.
after what they did to lara logan, jessica lynch, all the female POWs from the first gulf war.
i am beginning to think they will always be a savage people no matter what year it is.
There are riots, fires, fights, and killings before and after soccer matches in Germany, Italy, Spain, and England. To put this all on Muslims is the thinking of an uninformed person. Or a racist, take your pick.
Who cares? Soccer is a stupid sport and the fans of all countries are overly violent. It should be banned in the U.S. so we don't become idiots like them. I would never let my kids play this "sport", simply because it is boring and also because we don't need the violence.
Right, because violence never happens at something like, oh, a Dodgers-Giants game.
JLoweIQ...thanks for your input! I'd say you care if you took the time to read and then comment on the article...sorry for your prejudice against soccer...and that you are raising kids with that same prejudice...i hope they learn to open their minds despite your efforts at parenting. There is a reason the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...
I dont like to pick, thats called prejudice, JUST SHOOT TO KILL!!
