Malaysia deports Saudi accused of prophet insult on Twitter

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysian authorities on Sunday deported a young Saudi journalist accused of insulting the Prophet Muhammad on Twitter, a police official said. The move came despite concerns from rights groups that he may be persecuted at home.

Jiddah-based newspaper columnist Hamza Kashgari was detained Thursday upon his arrival in Malaysia. Some Saudis have reportedly made death threats against him or called for him to face criminal charges over remarks he tweeted that many considered offensive.

National police spokesman Ramli Yoosuf told The Associated Press that the 23-year-old Kashgari was handed over to Saudi officials and flown back Sunday morning.

Malaysia is a majority Muslim country with a close affinity with many Middle Eastern nations through their shared religion. The Southeast Asian nation is also a U.S. ally and a leading global voice for moderate Islam, meaning that any decision to extradite Kashgari certain to be controversial.

Blasphemy is a crime punishable by execution under oil-rich Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law. It is not a capital crime in Malaysia.

The 23-year-old Kashgari reportedly posted the comments on his Twitter feed to mark the Prophet Mohammad's birthday on Saturday, drawing thousands of outraged comments on Twitter and other social networking sites.

Report: Saudi Arabia eyes nukes if Iran tests A-bomb

The comments could not be verified because he later deleted them, but media reported that one them reflected his contradictory views of the Prophet.

'Scapegoat'
Kashgari later said in an interview that he was being made a "scapegoat for a larger conflict" over his comments.

"I view my actions as part of a process toward freedom," Kashgari was quoted as saying in the interview with the Daily Beast website.

"I was demanding my right to practice the most basic human rights - freedom of expression and thought - so nothing was done in vain."

The news of Kashgari's imminent extradition prompted ripples of outrage on Twitter.

"His blood on Malaysia's hands," wrote Mona Eltahawy, a commentator on Arab and Muslim issues.

Others responded with charges of "shameful" and "awful."

Muhammad Afiq Mohamad Nor, a lawyer appointed by Kashgari's family, said Malaysia's move was unlawful because he had obtained a court order to block the deportation. He said he hasn't been informed by police and was still verifying if the Saudi had indeed been sent back.

"We are concerned that he would not face a fair trial back home and that he could face the death penalty if he is charged with apostasy," the lawyer told the AP.

Amnesty International has called Kashgari a "prisoner of conscience" and called for his release.

Human Rights Watch said Saudi clerics have condemned Kashgari as an apostate who must face punishment. The rights group had urged Malaysia to allow him to seek asylum.

This is an outrage that should be adressed in diplomatic channels to our supposed allies Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. I mean really why would supposedly moderate muslim Malaysia send this man back to face DEATH? I would never ever visit a muslim country as a tourist or any other reason as they are all WHACKED OUT crazy! I am sorry sympathizers but where are the moderate muslim countries?

Who told you that Saudis are moderate?

Saudis and Pakis are the leaders of Islamic religious Nazis.

Here the Saudi rulers are the worst culprits. We should not support such religious bigoted beasts.

Malaysia is supposed to be a moderate Muslim nation. They should not have handed over Kashgiri to Saudis!

Hope this Kashgiri is not a Shiite. If he is a Shiite, then he will be tortured and killed.

Mind you: Saudi Arabia have more than 10 percent Shiites population too.

What the article also doesn't mention is that the Saudi government requested and received the services of INTERPOL to track down Kashgari, as if some grave international CRIME had been committed!

The young man tweeted the following on Muhammad's birthday:

"On your birthday, I find you wherever I turn. I will say that I have loved aspects of you, hated others, and could not understand many more."

For this he was hunted down like a dirty criminal and will probably be murdered in Saudi Arabia for "Blashemy." "Modern, moderate Malaysia" (and INTERPOL!) served him right up to the Saudis without so much as a peep of protest.

All people of decency and conscience should be outraged by this!

Nobody in government, another country, or the corporate world could give a $@#* about freedom, morals, or values. They only care about money and power. The people who care are us...the ones who allow this all to happen!

first of all you guys have to open your eyes and see the bigger picture. just because you dont understand the laws of a nation doesn't mean you should try looking from your point of view. sociologically speaking, those laws are the same as treason laws here in america. i mean, different nations have different laws, some of which would make you want to scratch your head and wonder WTF? like in Connecticut its unlawful to walk backwards after sunset. you could literally be arrested and charged for this!!

basically what i'm saying is that usually the unintelligent mass conform using group-think mentality and point fingers at things they cant comprehend. for a second instead of being the judge and prosecutor... just be yourself and try to understand what is actually going on

This is why Islam is not compatible with the other religions of the world. God forbid that we say anything derogatory about there prophet or way of life and they either want to put you in jail for life or kill you. The spread of Islam must be stopped. I know that they try to say that it is just the extremist, but that's not the way it appears or when some thing like this happens the moderates would stop it.

What is the lesson to be learned here? One cannot question the 'current' interpretation of Mohammed. If one were to point out that Mohammed was a pediphile - that would be sacreligious. To point out that Mohammed murdered thousands is sacreligious. But to say that Mohammed supports animals and terrorists who rape children and kill women in his name is considered something to celebrate.

For this man to say the same thing that many christians say is a good start. But for him to be condemned by his own religion is amazing. Reminds me of the Catholic Church in the 15th century. Maybe the Muslims around the world will have their own reformation (assuming that this religion does not exterminate itself by another attempt at jihad against all non-believers).

It is a cruel irony and an amazing act of hypocrisy by the Saudi regime to, on the one hand, criticize and seek actions against a Syrian dictator's crackdown on individual freedoms in that country, and at the same time to seek to silence one of its own citizens for exercising that same fundamental human right.

This only goes to prove, once again, that our "allies" in the Middle East are simply the other side of the same coin as the other despots that populate that region.

So let us hear what the U.S. Government has to say about the lack of freedom of speech within our "ally" countries, both Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

In fact, let us demand that the U.S. Government speak out publicly (not in back-channel diplomatic secrecy) about the lack of basic freedoms within our "ally" countries.

MSNBC's reporters or contributors, dateline Kuala Lumpur, won't even repeat the "blasphemy" apparently for fear of being prosecuted themselves. That is the truly scary part to me. If the institutions of free speech won't speak up, we have started down the slippery slope of allowing extremist views to prevent us from exercising basic human rights.

I have no generalized dislike of Muslims. I don't fear sharia law because it is not and should not have anything to do with me. What I do fear is silence in the face of religious or political totalinarianism. How many millions of people have been murdered throughout history in the name of religion? I say that the free people of the world hold a day of apostasy in favor of the basic human right to live and let live as each individual sees fit for him or herself.

Where did the freedom of religion and freedom of speach go?

Worst was to attack Saddam and save the Kuwaiti ruler with 65 wives at one time and fix his golden toilets first!

It's 2012...why do we still need religions to fulfill our ignorance, fears, and insecurity? Even within the 3 major Abrahamic denominations..they still don't get along nor trust one another. For example..the Shia vs Sunni, Ultra-Orthodox Jews vs. Reform, and Catholics vs Protestant. What does that say when they can't even agree amongs themselves..and the sad part is all these ignorant christians who spew all this hatred toward Islam when Christianity and Islam are half siblings? I hope Israel bombs Iran and then Iran levels Jerusalem so no one will laid claim nor inhibit that area for thousands of years.

"What does that say when they can't even agree amongs themselves.."

It says they're human. Religion is not the problem, being human and having and exercising freedom of thought and speech are more likely to blame. Do all NewsViners agree among themselves? Do all scientists agree among themselves? Do all politicians agree among themselves? For that matter, do any two human beings ever agree on everything?

We don't have to agree on anything, just not kill each other over disagreements. With religion, though, believers become angry. Do scientists or philosophers attack each other physically? Religion is the scourge on the planet.

I think the anger stems from believers not being able to argue their position with facts or reason. Plus most of them claim they chose their religion when, in fact, they were born into a believing family or community. It is a lucky child who is able to overcome stupid ideas and grow into an intelligent and civilized adult.

John Aalborg,

"Do scientists or philosophers attack each other physically?"

No, in most cases they do not, and in most cases religious people do not attack each other physically either. Think about it. There are literally billions of people in this world who believe in one religion or another. How many of them are going out and physically attacking their neighbors? Relatively few do that. If that were not the case, the streets of our cities would be flowing with blood and you would be up to your hips in it. Be rational about it.

Do all scientists agree among themselves? Do all politicians agree among themselves? For that matter, do any two human beings ever agree on everything?

Do Newsviners who can't get along on a certain subject hunt each other down and try to kill each other? When two scientists perform the same experiment and reach conflicting results, do either one of them try to have their opponent results censored? And after getting into an argument, does an average husband try to kill his wife?

The answer to all three questions: no.

Now, with that in mind, consider this: when two people of different religions can't agree on how the universe works or whether there is a God or not, do they try to kill each other or censor each other's beliefs in the name of their own?

The answer: they shouldn't, but they do it anyway.

The point is, being human and having your own beliefs doesn't make a very good excuse for trying to snuff your opponents' beliefs out.

I am a very proponante that we don't need a law that says not to use Sharia law. We have secular laws on the books that cover anything we need, and we use them.

However, if you want it in the books that religious laws cannot ever be used as a basis for government decisions then ok, because we can then just dismiss the recent outcry over birth control because that decision allows for the use of a religious belief to interfer with a governmental function.

You ok with that? Because if you put in a law against one, then you must include all of them.

#6.1 - Sun Feb 12, 2012 6:43 AM EST

It actually it ends up being the same kind of law. In both cases, government would be overriding religious freedoms. So the same law would also have prevented the showdown to begin with because it wouldn't have allowed the government to dictate to a religious organization what they must do regardless of their religious beliefs. And keep in mind that a specific religious organization not offering certain forms of birth control does not "ban" or all of the sudden make birth control unavailable. A little common sense to these kinds of situations is sometimes beneficial.

Sharia Law --- why in Gods Name should we as americans have to be forced to except Sharia Law when it is from another country and not from our laws in the USA

Shariah Law by definition cannot be applied to non-Muslims, and certainly NOT in a non-Muslim country.

- we voted it out in Oklahoma...

There was NOTHING to vote out...it was a hate group's stunt to get some some attention...

just to have leberial athiest judge to over turn it-

You have NOT read the judgment or are unable to understand it because of your lack of understanding of US Common Law, Business Law, specifically Contract Law.

A legal contract was made between two Muslim entities [Legal under US Contract Law]. And that was what the court found...the rest is ChristoFascist rumor mongering and propaganda hype - you are propagating in your ignorance, lack of education in general, and of US Business Law in particular...your bigotry notwithstanding.

but we will push it to the highest courst to keep it out of our laws as it is nothing but a law used to kill or to digrace humans and they say it is Gods will...

You do that and lose again, again...better for you to take four years of US Law or at least a year of Contract Law, what to say of Shariah Law, if you can pass the preliminary entrance exam and have the prerequisites for it, then come back and pontificate. At present you are NOT living in reality and have absolutely now idea what your are talking about.

Except for an extra dose of hate you have nothing to offer in this context, at present.

you should belive in Jesus Christ he is FGods ONLY son and ONLY way into heaven- not sheria law----

God's ONLY son? What happened to your god after that. Did he become impotent or did the holy spirit miss its cue on the second shot?

Even rats and dogs have repeated multiple litters...well there is the castration thing though - did that happen to your so very limited castrated god-man, or is it man-god?

Hard to get hold of that Trinity thingy.

LOL

that's just not true.Ask the Dutch cartoonists what happened after publishing a few cartoons depicting Mohammad,it is in violation of Sharia law. Look up Molly Norris in America, she violated Sharia law as well.

Any Muslim who has left Islam (meaning they are not Muslim any longer) may be killed by anyone, at any time, according to sharia law.

Saudi authorities used the Interpol with the issuance of the red notice- (for apostacy-religious offense) and Malaysia not adhering in insuring Hamza Kashgari's legal right to challenge the red notice in the Commission of Control of Interpol's files CCF. For thousands of years, millions of people have died needlessly by power hungry religious leaders. Religion isn't about God, it is about power! Power over other people. The more people that can be controlled, the more it is a successful religion.

I question that we have ever emerged out of the Dark Ages. As a person, I am ashamed as a human, no wonder people are committing suicide constantly! Abusive Religion isn't the answer!

I know Christians have not stopped murdering and raping yet either, but we find it less acceptable in most countries (Uganda excluded) to kill in the name of God. That's progress.. we recognize that our murderous instincts are human and not godly.

Not too hopeful... there is a slight chance.

Islam must not take over Europe politically. If it does, and western civilization commits suicide by letting them, then in a few hundred years our descendents will be Muslim or dhimmi.

What's more important - religious tolerance or cultural preservation? You can't have both with Islam. It's a theocracy.

                People forget this.

"Am I being too hopeful for the human race?"

Hopefully not.I think the same way.Because of history, invasions, colonialism, etc.Islam has never gone through what we have in the West.Critical thinking's on religion,a reformation,if you will.No governments in the Middle East seem to have tried to combine a reformed Islam as their policy. It seems they are either secular,or very religious. That I think is the problem.People in general want a relationship with God/Allah.How that is constructed is where the problems come about.

                Uncle Bob 512:

Most of what you are reading in the posts here is demonstrated ignorance compounded with malice and hate. What does the Saudi action have to do with Islamic Law? Nothing! [They are probably applying the law of treason of the hypocritical laws of their own country].

Islamic law cannot be in contravention to Allah's Commands given in the Noble Koran.

When the Bedouin Arabs, Pagans and others were abusing, attempting to murder, and regularly threw garbage and spat on The Prophet, Muhammad, Allah in the Noble Koran [Sura:73:10] clearly and categorically directed him, and to all Muslims to the following Command:

[Sura 73:10] And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a courteous good-bye.

[Sura 41:34]The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo! he, between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he was a bosom friend.

[Sura 4:111] Whoso committeth sin committeth it only against himself. Allah is ever Knower, Wise.

[Sura 2:045] Seek help in patience and prayer; and truly it is hard save for the humble- minded,

                  Freedom Of Speech Should Include:

The Muslims always were, are, and always will be
serious trouble for the entire world since 635
A.D when the evil Muslim Satanic Holy Quran was written. Ever since the great evil impersonator
“Satan” appeared as the angel Gabriel in dreams to Mohammed, the great Muslim
prophet Mohammed would go out to make
war and horribly torture and kill hundreds of people doing Satan’s work. Today, about 50 percent of all twenty two million Muslim Saudi
citizens and about another 20 million Muslims from other countries, can not read or write anything of any
language. This is why most Muslims do not celebrate birthdays. No one could record birthdays until very
recently! Today, over fifty percent of
the Saudi Muslim population have absolutely no job skills. Also, these same Muslims can not even read
their evil holy book the Quran. Today
the high illiteracy rate (ignorance) among millions of Muslims all over the
world have resulted in Muslims believing in Black Magic, Superstition
and Witchcraft also due to the
evil influence of millions of ignorant black Africans. All Muslims hate the sign of the Christian
Cross. Muslims today believe if they
touch anything that looks like the “Cross” they will die. It is illegal to wear anything
that “looks like” a “Cross” in public in Saudi Arabia or even carry a Christian
Bible in public or you will be arrested.
Muslims always say "Enshalla" which means “It Is God's Will". When Muslims always do something stupid, bad,
                  or wrong, they say "Enshalla".
This means it was “God’s will”.
Thus, Muslims take no responsibility for their actions. Most all Muslims are like little children
having children, no accountability, no patience, no responsibility, no desire
to do any physical work, wanting to party all the time, and are very, very
greedy. Greed?? The three trillion dollars a year oil money
Saudi Arabia receives, allows each of the very select sixteen thousand rich
Saudi Royals to receive about one million dollars a month “pocket money”, giving the select Muslim Royals many
big problems with gambling, drugs and alcohol.
These rich Muslim Royals send millions of dollars each year to the
children orphanages in Egypt and to children orphanages in many other Muslim
countries of the world for one special evil reason. Research recently accidentally found out that
children in these orphanages were permanently disappearing because these
orphanages are nothing more than “organ farms” for rich Muslim Royals needing
                  organ transplants.

                  The evil
holy Quran allows Muslim husbands to lie, beat or cut on
their wives at any time for no reason.
Muslim wives have no right to ask "why their husbands are lieing,
beating or cutting on them". All
Muslim woman must wear the black Abya which covers their entire body so no one
can see their broken arms, cuts and bruises.
The evil Muslim Holy Book the "Quran" says: that Jesus Christ is not the son of
God, Jesus Christ did not die on the cross, the Holy Ghost does not exist,
the Holy Trinity does not exist, and Baptism is not necessary for
salvation. Most Muslim religious leaders believe in female
                  circumcision for all females.
                  All Muslims are dangerous.
                  Why? The Quran teaches all
Muslims it is God's Will for Muslims to kill all Infidels (Christians and Jews,
and even other Muslims). All Muslims
should be removed from the United States.
Muslims should not be allowed to travel anywhere least they crash an airliner,
blow up a building or bus or cut off some females private body parts. All over the world, every evil Muslim Mosque
has the cresent moon at the top to symblize that all Muslims are praying to
their Moon God. There will only be
world peace when everyone is Muslim and all females are circumcised. Wake up America!!!!!!!!

You do realize that the Quran has pretty the same stories as the Bible. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam worship the same God. The God of Abraham. Religion was never the problem. Its the followers that you have to watch out for that use religion to justify their own means.

Freedom of speech about Muslims should include:

                    God
                    bless the "Leathernecks"....
                    Who are leathernecks?

                    For one thing,
it has to do with America's first war against terrorism in 1801. In the 1700's and early 1800's many American
merchant ships sailing to Europe were defenseless against Muslim pirate
                    attacks. The Muslim Barbary pirates
sailing the European coast line from south Africa to north of England were the
most feared pirates of all. The Muslim
pirates were taking almost twenty five percent of all American merchant
                    shipping. Thomas Jefferson realized any
rational agreement with the Muslim pirates was out of the question. In the late 1700's Thomas Jefferson
supported the building of three large American fighting war ships, "the Philadelphia", "the
Constitution" and "the Constellation" to stop the Muslim
pirates. In 1801 these three great
American war ships set sail to fight "America's first war against
terrorism", against Muslim pirates. Thomas Jefferson also made sure each sailor
had a thick four inch wide leather band to wear around their necks when
                    fighting Muslim pirates. These
                    sailors were called "leathernecks".
Later the great American warship the Philadelphia was captured by Muslim
Barbary pirates and taken to Tripoli, the Muslim capital of Libya. In 1803 American leathernecks snuck into
Tripoli harbor and set fire to the American warship the Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia was sunk in Tripoli harbor to prevent the Muslim
pirates from using it against us.

                    Today we still
fight Muslim pirates in the air, land or sea. All Muslims read the Muslim holy book, the
Quran. The Holy Quran says: Jesus Christ is not the son of God, Jesus
Christ never died on the cross, The Holy Ghost does not exist, The Holy Trinity
does not exist, circumcision to all females, and to kill all infidels (Christians and Jews) in
the name of "God". If any
Muslim is killed for doing what it says to do in the Quran in the name of God,
he will go to heaven and receive 72 Virgins.
All over the world, every evil Muslim Mosque has the cresent moon at the
top to symblize that all Muslims are praying to their Moon God.
May almighty God save us from the
                    Muslims……

The Muslim holy book, the Quran was written by Satan
and all copies should be burned.

Because of the Quran, all Muslims should not be
allowed into the United States. God
bless Thomas Jefferson and God Bless the Leathernecks. Wake Up America!

Blasphemy is a crime punishable by execution under oil-rich Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

We've got a long way to go as a species, hopefully the survival of the fittest will be those who don't have such ridiculous beliefs. Once they run out of oil they'll be nothing more than a baron desert with nothing of value and hopefully that will force change to a more civilized society.

Religion and a balance freedom is not a lie. But religious people have a hard time thinking balance because to worship God you can't dedicate your-self half-way like the devil. So. whenever religious person use freedom as an excuse when caught, religious person is living a lie.

Islam is a very sick set of beliefs that is ruining the lives of millions. It is almost like a drug in the corrosive effects it has on a society.
