A book burning in cultural context is an attempt to censor a work of literature. These books that found their way into the trash can were left in rooms that were occupied by prisoners. They were never intended to be found in the trash, nor was there any attempt to censor their holy book. There was no intent on desecration. Books are discarded on a daily basis when they are old and damaged. I recently threw away my copy of Kurt Vennegut's 'Cat's Cradle' due to water damage. I can buy another one to replace it. There is no magic in pulp and ink.

When they worship a book and hold it in such high esteem above all others, then it will become the only book they offer the rest of the world. Does the Taliban ever ask themselves, what do they offer the rest of humanity? We've all read the Koran and the satallite hadith.They are interesting books for the 7th to the 10th centuries. It's time to move on and grow up and move on, there is world that's moved beyond. It's best to build a better life in the world we know than to dedicate all effort for the imaginary one we don't.

You make a very good point. The overall literacy rate in Afghanistan is 26%. When you considered the rural areas alone it is something like 12%. So, who has the power over the people and who corrupts their minds...the Imams.

I thought the same thing, Afghanistan has something like 20% literacy, 40% for male youth, and that's not even in Arabic - the only language in which the Koran is supposed to be written/read.

Unfortunately, that's exactly what is happening. Each one of those foot soldiers is employed. Those bombs - someone has to make them. Military support and logistics is a huge civilian sector employer. What about all those contractors as well? What would they do if they didn't have to manufacture and repair 80% of our military equipment?

The military industrial complex is enormous, some states are practically dependent on it for the majority of their income. Our military bases bring billions to local economies, and hundreds of thousands of jobs.

No politician on the planet who cares about his job would agree to downsizing the MIC in their backyard. Someone else's ... sure... but not theirs.

A lot of the comments miss the point. They compare the incident to a flag burning. A flag burning has the full intent of provocation and disrespect. Flag burnings in have been going on in Pakistani protests for decades, and still you don't see masses of chaotic violent young men attacking Pakistani immigrants. I wonder if theses people knew that the Quran's in question were already desecrated with extremists messages. These books contain the word of God and should only be handled with those pure of mind and heart. From my understanding the only way to dispose of these books is either burial or burning. When they burn flags it's disrespectful but beating or killing someone over it never enters my mind. That's just the height of stupidity. Shuklack - Unfortunately, that is the way to wage war. And it is very effective. Each protracted war effort has been one of political involvement. Look at the first desert Storm. We took the gloves off, and military actions were ceased in a few days, and over 200,000 Iraqi soldiers were killed, a few thousand Iraqi vehicles. Now look at the send Iraqi effort (political), Afghanistan (political), the compared Vietnam (very political). When the Russians invaded Pakistan and Afghanistan they were fighting a war of attrition against an under-armed group of peasants really. They were winning the war, handily. Then the US stepped in, and the rest is history.

The point being, if a country is to wage war, they need to do just that. Not institute rules of engagement, significantly reducing the effectiveness of a military.

Ok, I will explain all of this to you just one more time. As in less than 3.1 months I finally get to go back on Retirement again as "Too Old" with no more Recalls to Active Duty again (and again and again). I will not have to worry about the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Arabic, Farsi, Pashtu, Dari, Asymmetric Warfare, etc..

1. From the 1950s till 1979, the USSR 40th Army Occupation. The US and USSR competed against each other building up Afghanistan to get the Afghans to become their Allies. Afghanistan was a 20thCentury Nation. The Pro USSR Afghans demand that the USSR help them control Afghanistan, by completely taking over Afghanistan from the Pro US Afghans. The USSR is tired of competing with the US building up Afghanistan, and sends the USSR 40thArmy with attachments from the over 101 USSR Divisions, USSR Air Force, etc..

2. During the USSR 40th Army Occupation, the USSR did not care which Afghans they killed, Pro USSR or Pro US did not matter. The Pro USSR Afghans fled to USSR Backed Fundamentalist Islamic Iran. The Pro US Afghans fled to Pakistan and Northeastern Afghanistan. Those Afghans remaining in Afghanistan were mostly massacred as the USSR used Total Conventional Warfare of Carpet Bombing, Chemical Warfare, millions of area denial weapons (landmines), tank divisions to level villages and massacre the villagers, etc.; to survive this many of the Afghans at Afghanistan fled into the thousands of miles of former mines, mineshafts, mining tunnels, etc. (many still live in these mines, NOT "Caves") as bomb shelters inside and underneath the mountains (think US NORAD or the USSR Ural Mountain Complex).

3. Most of the Pro USSR Afghans that fled into USSR Backed Fundamentalist Islamic Iran as Fundamentalist Islamic Sanctuary. US Military Teams are attached to SAD/SOG, some US Military Training Teams that already existed were rotated from US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars to Pakistan/Afghanistan. The Mission is to train the Pro US Afghans to defeat the USSR 40th Army Occupation, they become the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen. The Israelis using Aircraft purchased from the US, Airstrike the Iraqis Nuclear Facility to stop the Iraqis Nuclear Program (start of Iraq becoming anti US).

It is Standard Operating Procedure for the US Military Training Teams to completely document everyone that they trained (names, photos, fingerprints, detailed descriptions (hair color, eye color, scars, birth marks, height, weight, etc.), age, relatives, addresses, date of birth, place of birth, etc. as just the start of the vetting process (as not to get shot in the back)), this is also used for potential future Intelligence Assets. The US Military Training Team members accompany those that they trained into Combat, usually ending up as Combatants, and sometimes even leading them. The USSR Spetsnaz Hunter Killer Teams are sent to eliminate the US Military Training Teams at US Ally Iraq as well as at Afghanistan/Pakistan. During this time Osama Bin Laden was living with his Rich Relatives at Saudi Arabia forming his Anti Saudi Arabian Government and Anti US Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadist Organization, Al Quada. They start the planning for the 1993 First World Trade Center Bombing. 8. The Pro USSR Afghans return from Fundamentalist Islamic Iran, they become the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban. With the complete support of USSR Backed Fundamentalist Islamic Iran the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban massacre the surviving 20,000 to 50,000 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen, their Families, Relatives, In Laws, etc. and become the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Government. The few 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen that fled to Pakistan are chased, caught, and massacred by the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban at Pakistan, to prevent future 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen from rising up again at Pakistan, the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban establish the Pakistanis Taliban in that area (Northwestern Pakistan). In accordance with the Holy Koran (Quran) any Collaborators to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers "Die a Horrible Murdering", so within the Afghan Cities the trees looked like Christmas Trees, except the ornaments were the Collaborators to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers beaten and tortured then hung by the neck (all News Media was banned from Afghanistan except the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Ally USSR, as the USSR Tass News Agency, as to why only the Tass News Agency Archives have videos of this).

The Iran Iraq War Ends due to the use of Chemical Weapons used by US Ally Iraq, just like the US use of Nuclear Weapons ended WWII, without the US having to invade Japan at a cost of Millions of lives on both sides. The US Military Training Teams are ordered out. The Iranian Blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is stopped by the USN. President Clinton's and US Congress's US Law H.R.4655 fails to Liberate the Iraqis People thru the Overthrow of President Hussein. Due to President Clinton's Cut to the Bone Reduction In Forces (RIF) of the US Military the US Military is not capable of conducting a US Military Operation to Overthrow President Hussein and Liberate the Iraqis People. Most of the RIF'ed US Military then form the US Contractors and US Security Contractors and since they had Combat Experience or Previous US Military Experience later become "Sole Source" against the US Civilian Contractors without any previous Combat Experience or no Previous US Military Experience and Training. Most of us Retire from the US Military with over 20 years and start our 2nd Careers; but due to the President Clinton Cut to the Bone RIFs our replacements were never Trained.

15. The US is facing a Oil Crisis worse than the 1970s Oil Crisis and only has 6 months of Strategic Oil Reserves (Just like Japan before invading China). The Nation that supplied 2/3rds of the US Daily Oil, Venezuela, President Chavez declares Oil Nationalization, US Mercenaries that attempted to start a Civil War to stop the Venezuelan Oil Nationalization are traced back to the US, Venezuela stops all shipments of Oil to the US. In response to this upcoming Oil Crisis, President Bush requests more Oil Drilling and Oil Exploration of the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR); US Congress tells him no, and if you want Oil go to Iraq and get it. President Hussein's Modernization of the Arab World is in effect with Nations other than the US and US Allies assistance. US Congress then appropriates more funds to President Clinton'sUS Law, H.R.4655 as without funding President Bush has a valid excuse to not enforce this US Law. President Bush as Commander In Chief, starts the rebuilding and mobilizations of the US Military, and reactivationsof previously deactivated US Military Units during President Clinton's Cut to the Bone Reduction In Forces of the US Military. Many previous "In House" US Military Jobs as eliminated by President Clinton RIFs had been lost to the US Contractors. The US Contractors with the most US Military Veterans, and US Military experience are Contracted; those without the US Military Experience file lawsuits and complain to the US Public and attempt to make this a Political matter and not a matter of Qualifications (US Military Experience, their lack of) and Contracting (they cannot full fill the basic Contract requirements). This is why I laugh at those saying "Halliburton", "KBR", "Blackwater (Xe)" from a position of being uninformed since they fail to mention the other 3,000 US and Foreign Contractors that were also Contracted because they had US Military Experience and are stating the position of the Unqualified no US Military Experience Contractors (if you don't have the Experience, after being Contracted is not the time to gain Experience or learn how to do your job, as a means to get more killed unnecessarily. This is what all those complaining against Halliburton, KBR, Blackwater (Xe) wanted, more killed unnecessarily by contracting those without any experience that started attaching their complaints of not being contracted due to having no experience to Politics). I start to reform my US Military Teams after being Recalled to Active Duty, survivors from the US Military Training Teams to US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars, and to Pakistan/Afghanistan to train the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen, added to the survivors from President Clinton's Somalia Operation Gothic Serpent, etc. as those that are "Middle East" Qualified and Experienced; I believed we would be the First going Blind (no Intelligence Asset link ups) into Iraq (based on our previous experience of the Iran Iraq Wars).

16. The 9/11 2001 Attacks occur. Many US Military Asymmetric Warfare that got out, became Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, EMTs, etc. as "First Responders" to continue to serve the people. So instead of going to Iraq, the Teams attached to SAD/SOG are sent to Afghanistan weeks after the 9/11 2001 Attacks to (Missions): a. Overthrow the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Government that provided Osama Bin Laden and Al Quada with Islamic Sanctuary, and Supported the Islamic Jihadist Training Camps., b. Reinstate a form of Democratic Government., c. Seize and Secure locations for the Arrival of US Military Conventional Warfare Forces., d. Mission Added, UN Mission, Nation Building., e. 2006 after President Bush amended the US No Assassination Policy, the Termination of Osama Bin Laden.

17. US Congress Declares War With Iraq as required by US Law, both Houses Senate with the 2002 Iraqi War Resolution, and previously the House of Representatives with US Law H.R.4655 "Iraqis Liberation Act of 1998", this becomes US Military Operation Iraqis Freedom 1998 to 2011. To prevent President Bush from having any excuses of not enforcing these US Laws, US Congress Appropriates the Funds. As soon as the ink dried on the 2002 Iraqi War Resolution thoseof us that survived Overthrowing the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Government of Afghanistan are sent to Iraq to accomplish 2002 Operation Hotel California by living with the Kurdistanis to gain their trust, then organizing, training, equipping them to fight the Iraqis Military prior to the 2003 US Military Conventional Warfare Forces Liberation of Iraq. Most of the survivors (200 survivors of the 500 that were from the Iran Iraq Wars, and the USSR 40th Army Occupation) go back on Retirement after 30 years. The War at Afghanistan, etc. is going badly (the US Military still had not recovered from President Clinton's Cut to the Bone RIFs andlacks experience conducting Asymmetric Warfare). We are Recalled to Active Duty again from Retirement, train with the candidates (replacements) for potential assessment to the Teams, reform the Teams, refresher training with the Deutsche Bundeswehr Commandos in Mountain Warfare, acclimatization (Mountain Warfare) andtraining withUS Ally Turkey before deployment to Afghanistan to conduct US Military Asymmetric Mountain Warfare (above 6,000 feet). The Missions: a. Provide Humanitarian Assistance in the form of Medical Care (training as Physician's Assistants) and building medical clinics, Education by building schools and teaching the Afghans between other missions., c. Foreign Internal Defense, train the Afghans to protect themselves (from previous experience of Operation Cyclone, only after we have vetted them) against the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban, Al Quada, Hamas Foreign Fighters, etc.., d. Redacted., e. Interdict the Islamic Jihadists (US Military Asymmetric Warfare, Counter Insurgency, Counter Intelligence, Counter Terrorist, etc.)., f. Special Reconnaissance (including independent Intelligence verification)., g. Redacted., h. Redacted., i. etc.. General McKiernan since he did not know much about Asymmetric Warfare allows us, "his experts", to do our job with his full support and no interference, same with President Bush (unlike a certain British General that kept sticking his nose where it did not belong). The course of the War here (Afghanistan) is changing, the US is winning. To completely win, General McKiernan needs more US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces, as well as US Military Conventional Warfare Forces and not one or the other according to his War Plan.

18. Candidate Obama becomes US President. President Obama refuses to listen to General McKiernan's needs to win Afghanistan in accordance with General McKiernan's War Plan to Win Afghanistan. General McKiernan as his Duty as a US Military Officer to Inform the US Public of matters concerning his Command, potential unnecessary deaths of the US Citizens of the US Military, goes Public with an interview with Katie Courric of CBS News. President Obama is outraged and embarrassed and demands General McKiernan's Letter of Resignation. Because President Obama did not have a legal leg to stand on, and firing General McKiernan would require a Public US Congressional Hearing (further embarrassing President Obama), President Obama makes a deal with General McKiernanto retire as a Four Star General instead of a Three Star LieutenantGeneral. We attend General McKiernan's farewell party. President Obama grabs General McKiernan's War Plan to Win Afghanistan and calls it his President Obama Plan to Win Afghanistan. However, without any US Military Training President Obama does not realize that without General McKiernan's Commander's Intent (not written in the War Plan), General McKiernan'sWar Plan is useless. President Obama declares his 2009 Improved Relations with Iran Policy, as Iran allowed to do anything without US Interventions.

19. President Obama nominates General McChrystal to replace General McKiernan, which was not so bad, as General McChrystal is also US Military Asymmetric Warfare (one of the very few) withprevious US Military Asymmetric Warfare Experience (even more rare), some of us served with him at Iraq while he was in Command of the Joint Special Warfare Task Force and the Righthand expert to General Petraeus on all matters of "Special Operations". US Congress confirms General McChrystal as Commander Afghanistan. General McChrystal arrives here, we give him our Commander's Briefings (I did not have to becauseRedacted as Redacted and not in his Chain of Command; and was only required to give him a CourtesyBriefing, but gave him a Command Briefing anyway out of respect for his being US Military Asymmetric Warfare). Based on these Commander's Briefings, General McChrystal requests more US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces and US Military Conventional Warfare Forces. President Obama refuses to listen, andonly wants to hear what Admiral Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff (no US Military Asymmetric Warfare, nor US Military Ground Combat Training nor Experience) has to say versus the General on the Ground that he nominated. President Obama gives General McChrystala Letter of Reprimand for General McChystal stating that Iran was supplying the Al Quada, Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban, Hamas Foreign Fighters, etc. based on being shown captured weapons, munitions, Islamic Jihadists, etc. as against President Obama's2009 Improved Relations with Iran Policy.

20. Without any training nor experience in US Military Logistics President Obama sends almost a hundred thousand US Civilians to Afghanistan as his US Civilian Surge. President Obama's Political Appointees Holbrooke and Eikenberrynegotiate the US Military Rules of Engagement with President Karzai as "Cannot Shoot until Shot" without input from General McChrystal. The tensions between President Obama's Political Appointees Holbrooke and Eikenberry and General McChrystal (responsible and accountable for everything at Afghanistan) start.

Tensions increase between President Obama's Political Appointees Holbrooke and Eikenberry against General McChrystalwhen they find out that President Karzai has requested that General McChrystalinvestigate them for spending Billions with nothing being built or done. This becomes their motive for wanting President Obama to fire General McChrystal to stop the investigation. President Obama's Political Appointees Holbrooke and Eikenberry start screaming "Karzai Corrupt" to the International News Media to deflect the blame from themselves; as these hundreds of Billions USDs are only accessable by them, and not the US Military, Afghans, nor President Karzai. By saying Karzai Corrupt President Obama Political Appointees gave the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban, Al Quada, Hamas Foreign Fighters, etc. the Strategic Asymmetric Goal of Undermining a US Ally Established Government as an Official US Government Position; AND the Strategic Asymmetric Warfare Goal of increased Local, National, International Support of Al Quada, Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban, etc..

22. President Obama's US Civilian Surge puts an enormous strain on General McChrystal's Logistics. The US Civilians start to complain to President Obama's Political Appointees Holbrooke and Eikenberry that General McChrystal is denying their Rights to Burger King, Starbucks, Pizza, Taco Bell, etc. and all the other things that must be shipped in by the US Military at the Risk of Lives (US Military and US Civilians of the US Contractors). (Irony is that the complainers are the same US Civilians that run the US Military Dining Facilities that they refuse to eat at.). The other complaints against General McChrystal start about not proving fuel and US Military for their Security for the armored SUVs that the US Civilians use that do not go anywhere, andremain parked (note: when they were sent here by President Obama they were supposed to pay the US Security Contractors or the Foreign Security Contractors to provide their Security, it was NOT the responsibility for the US Military to provide them Security especially doing Guard Duty at their luxuary Hotels). General McChrystal then realizes he must make a Command Decision, as either Bullets, Beans, and Fuel for the US Military or Buns for Burger King for the US Civilians; he starts closing down the Burger Kings, Starbucks, Taco Bells, etc., the US Civilians complain that their Rights are being violated to President Obama Political Appointees Holbrooke and Eikenberry, SOS Clinton, and President Obama. President Obama's Political Appointees Holbrooke and Eikenberry use this against General McChrystal. General McChrystalreceives a verbal arse chewing from President Obama during a video conference in front of all of us for denying theseUS Civilians their Rights. If you ever seen President Obama angry. I start to stay away from Kabul as not to get sucked into the Politics and infighting. President Obama's Political Appointees Holbrooke and Eikenberry demand that US Civilians be placed on General McChrystal'sHigh Level Staff, he is ordered to comply by President Obama. A second "Chain of Command" is created as the US Civilian Chain of Command; as a violation of the Basic US Military Principle of Unity of Command that Historically usually results in a Catastrophic Defeat andFailures. All of the US Military Commanders start attempting to second guess the US Civilians and question what they are doing here (no Authority as US Military Commanding Officers). General McChystalis nearly finished with his investigations as requested by President Karzai of President Obama's Political Appointees Holbrooke and Eikenberry.

23. President Obama demands the Letter of Resignation of General McChrystal. Note: It was the US Civilians of the US Civilian Chain of Command of President Obama's Political Appointees Holbrooke and Eikenberry that were partying at France that made the comments, "This Administration Does Not Know What It Is Doing", the US Military cannot leave here anytime we want, like the US Civilians can and do. We can't just "get out now" A modern army does not just pack up their duffle bags and march out in the dead of night. There is an immense amount of equipment in there that can not be left behind. There are obligations we have to meet. We have an exit plan and it is proceeding accordingly. Is it as rapid as I or lots of other people would like it to be? No, but I'm not the one who has to make sure that as we draw down troops, we are not leaving behind sophisticated arms and weapons systems nor can we leave the remaining troops vulnerable to attack before they can be extracted too.

No one is being censored, there are guidelines followed as to what it takes to post hyperlinks in order to help reduce spam. If you are really bothered by this do like I did, write an email to the admin folks. When they see you are real they will give you authorization. Hey Mike...I got one for you. Well, technically it's not a law but a regulation. The TSA screeners at airports are not allowed to use profiling to target the specific group of individuals who are most likely to engage in terrorist activity. It was Muslim extremists who attacked our country, in the name of Allah, yet the TSA has to harass grandmothers, children and everyone in between who wants to board a plane now, instead of focusing on those who fit the profile of a Muslim extremist (terrorist). Why? Because they scream that we are discriminating if we do! Stereotypes are developed over time for a good reason. Once you see the same type of behavior over and over and over, it is really easy to get a good idea of who you can expect to be involved in such activity! It has to do with something called the "law of averages" and it is virtually foolproof. Yes, there are exceptions but not enough to change the average, i.e. stereotype, or it would change naturally.

My stereotype of catholics is they are extremist and love to force opinions upon you. Catholics perpetuate fear and guilt, that we are born sinners. Catholics also are a very violent bunch as history has proven, often killing their own or others in the name of God.

Maybe we should profile for catholics carrying weapons? We all know history has proven them to be a violent bunch and as you say the law of averages would tell us that they WILL attack others in the future.

Maybe we should profile for Jewish people because they have conducted terrorist attacks against Iran with magnetic bombs on scientists. History has shown the jewish people to be very violent, case in point israel, and we should profile and double check them as well?
