I can understand how they would be upset by the burning of the Quran since it is the word of God to them. But if they are going to get so upset by our burning it, they ought to at least take the time to read it. Every chapter in the Quran begins with the words, "In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful." Since the U.S. general in charge there has already apologized and explained that the burning was unintended, the Afghans ought to learn the meaning of the words "compassionate" and "merciful". Islam needs to do a better job of teaching its people the meaning of forgiveness, too.

Hi Mickey, thank you very much for saying that...I do alot of lecture in the Muslim community and I try to teach our people to do that but for some reason Islamic Scholars promote these violence, hence the reason why these people are acting like this. We need more Islamic Scholars to denounce these acts and tell the people to chill. It gives us Muslims here in America bad name. Especially when I am not from the middle east but they whole nation categorize me as being from the middle east because of these backwards, non educated people. To me the outrage displayed by the Afghani people is less about the burning of the book than it is about the perceived disrespect our soldiers have for the culture of the Muslim people. I'm sure our soldiers have done a lot of good over there, helping others and helping civilians rebuild lives, but the stories that grab the headines are the ugly stories about soldiers urinating on corpses and burning their holy books. They paint a somewhat skewed story of what we really are doing over there and the kinds of mistakes that are made during war.

I would agree, although I think this was more of a demonstration for other nations than it was a meaningful apology to Afghanistan. After all, Obama must certainly be aware that the people who are truly offended will not be satisfied by any apology, and don't recognize what a rare thing it is for a president to issue a formal apology for the actions of his country's troops.

It seems engineered more to appeal to the rest of the Muslim world (including Muslims in our own country and amongst our allies, like France & UK), and in that sense it is definitely the right thing to do.

I have always tried to respect the office of the president of the United States of America but this president is really stretching my limits of respect. If this president continues to want to appoligize to those who are commiting murder to thier own people, I suggest he take his PC self over their and I assure him that they will open their arms to him as their leader. I think American Islam is different than that in the rest of the world (if there IS a 'rest of the world' Islam). I was in Malaysia a few years ago and found that, even in that moderate country, there's no freedom of religion for non-Muslims (I was in Penang). Islam across the world is regressive, universally. Women's rights, freedom of religion, of speech, they don't exist in the Muslim world, EXCEPT in the American Muslim community. If American Muslims truly believe they're anything but an isolate minority, asea and adrift in a religion of ignorance, they're sadly mistaken. I do agree that our soldiers should not burn the quran. They should mail it to me, say what they want done with it, and I can do it with gusto on their behalf. The world can get mad at soldiers, but since I am not one, I can perform that service for free, and video tape it, and no one gets mad at them. Burning qurans is just one small thing I can do for our soldiers.

And it is because of oil that we have to keep kissing the behinds of those arabs. Otherwise, we would treat them pretty much like we do with the uneducated and violent parts of Africa. There was no intention to burn the Quran, and allowing the lie told by the enemy to stand would be foolish. Some of you seem to agree with Ayman al Zawahiri and his band of balshpemous muharibun that we are at war with Islam and all Muslims. We are not.

The decision to burn the books in the first place was dumb. The books were from a library for prisoners in Afghanistan, and it was discovered that some were being used to pass messages. Good reason to halt all prisoner access to the books. Burning the books was dumb, though, and burning the Quran was even dumber. The soldiers had no idea what they were buring (other than books) because the books were written using Arabic script (no matter which language they were written in). It was people WATCHING the burning that notices the Quran was among the books being burned.

There was nothing against the COH in any of those comments that I saw. There was anger against the rampaging Muslims and against Islam in general. Is that cause enough to CENSOR what people were expressing?? Apparently, to the msnbc editor, yes.

He/she did not like those harsh comments and obviously preferred the sentiment that Post #2 contained which expressed "Sad that soldiers had to die for this." So he/she just unilaterally erased ALL the comments that were made before, because he/she didn't like those views and preferred instead what poster #2 expressed.

To me, that's abusing the role. Don't inject yourself into the debate by picking and choosing which opinions are preferred. So long as no one is violating the COH (which no one was that I saw) don't impose your preferences on what people have to say and censor what you don't like.

Mrs Georgia Peach - you should really get your facts straight. Obama did not cancel the National Day of Prayer. He, as all presidents before him (since it was established) issued a Proclamation to recognize the day. In fact, Geroge W. Bush is the only president who held the National Day of Prayer at the White House for the full 8 years he was in office. Regan and HW Bush only held it once each at the White House, and Clinton never held one. Yet none of them were ever accused of "cancelling" the day. It's really amazing to me the lengths some people will go to to bash this president.

It is sad that people have to die over this. From the reports is that the books were being used to send out messages and where intercepted by our service men which are being killed by these people. Why protect a book that they are using against us? Our service men are dying because of this. Why can't the reporting agency report the truth. The books have been burned but the books where used to send messages to harm our service men. No apologies required.

Religious extremism of a very small minority which is allowed to control the operations of an entire country usually ends up destroying that country. Whether it is extreme Islam practiced by the Taliban, extreme christianity practiced by the evangelicals & babtists, or extreme conservativism practiced by the Tea Party, none of them are good for the country they take over.

The US government has rushed into "nation building" without understanding the culture of the region, yet again, with fully expected failure resulting from this lack of understanding. Whenever we venture into an area where we do not fully understand the culture, we lose. Whether the conflict is in S. America, Asia, the middle east or Africa, our inability to understand the culture always results in the failure of US policy. We win our military victories, yet lose the wars.

Not sure of the accuracy of the article, but found a link through BBC that said the books were burned because there was communicatory messages found in them amongst detainees and because that's how the Q'ran is supposed to be disposed of if disposed of.

Doing more research before passing any judgement on the apology bit, other than no matter how bad some may see it, it at least diffused an already bad situation. But, I still think more of what's in my first post is involved.

So what those leaders of Islam see is the US is a danger to the world. We are seen as the Great Satan. Because our ways seem to ruin other nations ways and cause more liberal actions. It also believes that their mission is to Redeem This Earth for Allah. They believe they are the final redemptive plan from God above and that all others before failed and they are the final Third plan that will not fail. If you bother to read a Q'uran you will see where it says " That all infidel will either convert or be put to the sword." When 9/11 happened I wanted to understand why they hate us. It also goes far deeper than just the " Christian Crusades".

So why are we still there with our resources and allowing the spilling of innocent blood. Why is our President apologizing and not just apologizing. Now here we are today and the problem of Al-Qaeda still arise. Now a nation is still doing what its been doing since 1979. Why is this going on? So what those leaders of Islam see is the US is a danger to the world. We are seen as the Great Satan. Because our ways seem to ruin other nations ways and cause more liberal actions. It also believes that their mission is to Redeem This Earth for Allah. They believe they are the final redemptive plan from God above and that all others before failed and they are the final Third plan that will not fail. If you bother to read a Q'uran you will see where it says " That all infidel will either convert or be put to the sword." When 9/11 happened I wanted to understand why they hate us. It also goes far deeper than just the " Christian Crusades".

So why are we still there with our resources and allowing the spilling of innocent blood. Why is our President apologizing and not just apologizing. Flag Burning: A few days ago some howled that a flag was lowered by Gov Christie in NJ for Whitney Houston. Right wingers have tried to pass law after law making it illegal, protests of flag burnings have become violent. There is no difference except that our flag stands for freedom, and the core of that is the right to burn that flag in protest. I like to think of our flag as nothing more than a piece of cloth, burn all you want, we can make more...because what it STANDS for is much stronger--and that you cannot burn. (FYI I personally would not burn the flag, but I will fight for your right to do so...then I will show up to protest your doing it. That is freedom.

The point is not that we did something wrong, the point is that if he didn't apologize, and in fact did what you are suggesting and piss in their faces, then the situation would get inflamed and spiral out of control.

But Americans need to face the truth at some point: that our ancestors came here and prospered, that this became the wealthiest and most powerful nation the world has ever known, for two reasons:

We stole an entire continent from the native people. We broke treaty after treaty and slaughtered them wholesale.

So...if a phalanx of Muslims showed up in our country and burned the Christian bible, many of you guys are saying that it wouldn't be a good reason to shoot one of them because "it's just a book"? From some of you I would believe that.

But I've heard from many above this that there are no Christian attacks on Muslims. So the cab driver in New York who was stabbed because he was a Muslim...was it because the kid was American or because the cab driver was Muslim? I'm not quite sure what the cab driver did to make the kid stab him...maybe it was because the student likened him to the people who attacked us in 2001. Of course, that couldn't be it because it doesn't make sense for someone to attack a person because of an action perpetuated by one of their groups, right? I think I read that above.

Obama did exactly the right thing. Our military involvement in Afghanistan has nothing to do with religion. We pride ourselves here in america on respecitn religious freedom. Reading all of this greives my heart deeply. I am a follower of Christ Jesus. 7 years ago, and MANY yrs before that, I hated God with a passion, AND all the worlds religions. I am 41 yrs old. In my opinion using the word "soldier" would elicit an emotional response, while "troop" treats them like non-persons on the battlefield. I can't help but believe that the boots on the ground see the difference.

Technically a troop is a company sized element of a cav squadron. A trooper is an individual in the troop and troopers defines a group of troop members. However, in common usage troop is used to discribe individual soldiers even if it is poor grammar.

"Troop" is perfectly appropriate for discussion more than one soldier. A "troop" refers to a group of soldiers. A "trooper" is a single soldier ... but when used in this sense is almost always a Cav (or other mounted) soldier. (As a side note, troop and trooper are common nomenclature for state police officers.)

And, having worn boots myself, I see no issue in using this terminology, however it is used incorrectly in the headline as two individuals were killed, not two groups of soldiers.

Personally, I think we went about the war in Afghanistan in a wrong way. What we should have done was hit them with fuel air explosives until there was no oxygen left, before they scattered to the wind. Bleeding hearts will talk about the innocents. My issue with this particular apology is that there is no way a thorough investigation has been conducted and I want to wait until it is. Coming back to the original topic...our military disposed (by burning, which is actually the official, proper Islamic way to dispose of a Quran) of some Qurans which had already been defaced by Muslims and used as scratch paper--by Muslims-- on which to write anti-American messages and pass on plans and info from one Afghan prisoner to another to be used against us. In a war.

Let's not forget what's going on there, and why we're there (generously/foolishly giving Qurans to Afghani war prisoners, and pens, apparently, and the sheltered leisure time in which to write in them).

So this is now a huge big deal that we have to apologize over. To the people who are killing our men and women...who are there trying to defend the Afghanis' fledgling democracy.

These Afghanis, who are suddenly so sensitive about religious books and artifacts, blew to smithereens two enormous, 1,000-year-old Buddhist statues carved into a mountainside. Did the Buddhists riot and kill people over that? Did the Muslims ever apologize?

Our US military burned several hundreds of Christian Bibles that a church in the States had had translated, at their own expense, into a couple of Afghan languages and sent over there to be made available, free, to any Afghani who was interested. Our government decided to burn them, just in case these sensitive Muslim souls might find someone else's holy book provocative. Did the Christians riot and kill people? Did Obama et al apologize to Christians for burning, in a heap, hundreds of their holy book?

Muslims the world over, including in Afghanistan, freely destroy churches and synagogues, and the books that go with them, and the people...no apologies.

And--Muslims the world over blow up mosques and holy shrines of other Muslims. On a regular basis. Burning in the process lots of Qurans (and killing lots of other Muslims). Anyone hear any apologies?

I recall reading that there qurans were used in a prison to transfer messages among the inmates and were destined to be destroyed for that reason. The 5th Century was a Golden Age in Afghanistan. Buddhists were living there, probably among neighbors with other beliefs too. In harmony and brotherhood. They (the Buddhists there) hand-carved beautiful, priceless, towering statues into the solid rock walls in Bamyan, Afghanistan. Stunning, gorgeous monuments to their wise and peaceful founder.

The 7th and 8th Century, however, brought the conquering armies of Islam. Buddhists were massacred and driven out. The writ of Islam and the Koran was made Supreme. All Non-muslim beliefs and people were converted, subjugated, or killed, just as the Koran says to be done.

Finally, in the 20th Century, the Muslim Taliban got around to blowing up those beautiful stone monuments to Buddha. Such icons and images, even though of a different faith (or especially so) are to be DESTROYED. So says the Koran.
So why did it take so long ? It was only in the 20th Century that explosives powerful enough to do the job were invented. Once available, the remnants of pre-Islamic Afghanistan were destroyed.

And that, my friends, is what the Qur'an says to do. Blowing up the Bamyan Buddhas was the Taliban way to honor THEIR founder Muhammad and the hateful creed he invented.

This day has been hard on me. Your supportve posts help some. I don't know that I've done very well chefaz. I kept trying to make multiple points at once and didn't focus very well on any it felt like. Then there is also my offense at msnbc having taken down comments b/c -- as it looked to me -- the editor just plain didn't like them. So that was eating at me too. I will say this: Americans need to take a good, long look in the mirror. We are less than 5% of the world's population. We can only maintain our present position in the world by being the best.

@stonepipe and onejulia. The program you referred to was titled, "The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan" - aired on Frontline on April 10, 2010 or 2011. The poor sell their very young sons to the rich merchants - we would call them pimps - they are then sold into slavery - dressed as girls, taught to dance, wait on them and used for sex. They are sold to the chief of police, the wealthy, etc. - anyone with money who can afford them. The boys have absolutely no protection whatsoever. None. Nothing. Was horrifically sad. I cried.

I'll answer. Most Muslims are peaceful. But the radicals oare overtly non-peaceful and try to stir up the peaceful ones every time some idiot burns a quran. They behead people over the burning of a book.

The really nasty ones blow up embassies, the USS Cole, and the WTC. They shoot up American bases. They fly planes loaded with Americans into buildings why? Alluah Akbar, that's why.

Jack, I think Mr. Obama has more knowledge about islam than we think, should have he apologized? I think he did the right thing trying to defuse an already bad situation. The thing I believe we should all be asking here is why in the world after all we know about these people and their ideologies would you send a holy book to the dump site!

Give to the imams over there and let them know how much the taliban desecrated the holy book. Writing messages in them should be enough to upset the whole lot of them. If not then, their stand on their religious book would be moot and we could tell them that.

However, I would like to see our Commander in chief, Mrs. Hillary Clinton and a whole entourage of personnel from our government go over there and let these people know that we are sorry for the burning of this book and that the killing of it is just crazy. With the apologies already made I'm sure they will welcome them with open arms and sit down to the peace tables.

While I don't agree with all of Mr. Obama policies, I am also not so stupid to believe the dogma that he got us here. Don't blame the politicians either, you guys voted for them so we as a whole need to step up and take the blame for the shape this country is in. I believe that in this country we have the right to recall any of our elected officals, that, is not holding up the Constitution of the United States. The problem is we wont do it as long as it doesn't affect our personal beliefs, ie. I'm ok with that the hell with everyone else. No matter if the rest of us care about it or not. We protest we're slugs, miserables on society and all of that knid of crap. This is truly what's wrong with our nation we are all just greedy to what we want and care nothing for others beliefs.

Thing is the two party system has failed this country miserably, can't agree on nothing and it is my way or the highway attitude.
