Updated at 9:50 a.m. ET: KABUL, Afghanistan -- President Barack Obama has written a letter to his Afghan counterpart apologizing for the burning of copies of the Quran at a NATO military base in the country. Two U.S. soldiers were also shot dead Thursday at a protest about the desecration of the holy books.
A man wearing an Afghan government soldier's uniform killed the American troops and wounded four others at the demonstration in Nangarhar province, officials told NBC News.
There have been violent protests daily since it emerged on Tuesday that Qurans used by detainees held at the Bagram military base had been burned. The incident has become a public relations disaster for foreign forces in Afghanistan.
A statement from President Hamid Karzai's office said the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan had delivered the letter from Obama Thursday.

In the letter, which is quoted in the statement, the U.S. president expressed his "deep regret for the reported incident" and offered his "sincere apologies."
According to the statement, Obama wrote: "The error was inadvertent; I assure you that we will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence, to include holding accountable those responsible."
Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the National Security Council, told NBC News that Obama had "expressed our regret and apologies over the incident in which religious materials were unintentionally mishandled at Bagram air base."
The Quran burnings at the vast Bagram base could make it even more difficult for U.S.-led NATO forces to win the hearts and minds of Afghans and bring the Taliban to the negotiating table ahead of the withdrawal of foreign combat troops by the end of 2014.
Muslims consider the Quran the literal word of God and treat each book with deep reverence. Desecration is considered one of the worst forms of blasphemy.

General John Allen, commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), on Tuesday offered his "sincere apologies" for the burnings. "When we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped them," he added. "This was not intentional in any way."
The deadly protest in Nangarhar was one of several across the country on Thursday.
Riots triggered by the inadvertent Quran burning at a U.S. military base prompted the U.S. to lock down its embassy. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.
According to Haji Mohammad Hassan, the deputy police of Khogayani district in Nangarhar province, American soldiers had starting firing at protesters who were attacking their base.
He said that an Afghan soldier then turned his weapon on the U.S. troops, shooting six, killing two and injuring four.

Hassan said the Afghan soldier escaped by joining the crowd of protesters. However, a provincial official, who asked not to be named, said the shooter had been killed after the attack.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack, NBC News reported.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a text message that they infiltrated the army with one of their fighters who had shot and killed the Americans. Mujahid claimed that their insurgent killed 10 Americans.

Peter, I don't think they look at killing that way. I think they consider it an act of jihad.
I can understand how they would be upset by the burning of the Quran since it is the word of God to them. But if they are going to get so upset by our burning it, they ought to at least take the time to read it. Every chapter in the Quran begins with the words, "In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful." Since the U.S. general in charge there has already apologized and explained that the burning was unintended, the Afghans ought to learn the meaning of the words "compassionate" and "merciful". Islam needs to do a better job of teaching its people the meaning of forgiveness, too.

Hi Mickey, thank you very much for saying that...I do alot of lecture in the Muslim community and I try to teach our people to do that but for some reason Islamic Scholars promote these violence, hence the reason why these people are acting like this. We need more Islamic Scholars to denounce these acts and tell the people to chill. It gives us Muslims here in America bad name. Especially when I am not from the middle east but they whole nation categorize me as being from the middle east because of these backwards, non educated people. When I was in pilgrimage in Mecca, these village people do the same things....they do not follow no rules or regulations. It gets me mad and pissed off when I see things like these are taking place. To me the outrage displayed by the Afghani people is less about the burning of the book than it is about the perceived disrespect our soldiers have for the culture of the Muslim people. I'm sure our soldiers have done a lot of good over there, helping others and helping civilians rebuild lives, but the stories that grab the headines are the ugly stories about soldiers urinating on corpses and burning their holy books. They paint a somewhat skewed story of what we really are doing over there and the kinds of mistakes that are made during war.

The media in Afghanistan needs to put good stories on the front page as well as the bad ones if they want to give us a true picture of what we're really doing there.

Burning any book, even the Quran, to get your point across is stupid. It accomplishes nothing. If you disagree with something, fine. Have an intellectual discussion about it. I would agree, although I think this was more of a demonstration for other nations than it was a meaningful apology to Afghanistan. After all, Obama must certainly be aware that the people who are truly offended will not be satisfied by any apology, and don't recognize what a rare thing it is for a president to issue a formal apology for the actions of his country's troops.
It seems engineered more to appeal to the rest of the Muslim world (including Muslims in our own country and amongst our allies, like France & UK), and in that sense it is definitely the right thing to do.
I have always tried to respect the office of the president of the United States of America but this president is really stretching my limits of respect. If this president continues to want to appoligize to those who are commiting murder to thier own people, I suggest he take his PC self over their and I assure him that they will open their arms to him as their leader. What I've learned of the group is that they will never want any peace, and if we were to leave today they'd find a reason to fight, even eventually amongst themselves.
I don't believe that I'd lump Muslims as a whole into this category unfairly. Most of us that research still have only limited knowledge of the religion as a whole; my take, the majority are peacefull. Indoctrinating the young over vast regions and in mass numbers to bastardize the Q'ran has resulted in what we're seeing, moreso for political and economical, quality of life regions in some areas than for actual religious purpose. And, some nations have seen ways, of course, of capitalizing on this especially per weapons trade and profits of war and prolonged conflicts.

I would assume we from the USA would do the same if someone burned all our historic documents (ie. decleration of independace, constitution, the American Flag!!!). I can't help but wonder when Obama is going to apologize to America for being such a lousy POTUS? I think American Islam is different than that in the rest of the world (if there IS a 'rest of the world' Islam). I was in Malaysia a few years ago and found that, even in that moderate country, there's no freedom of religion for non-Muslims (I was in Penang). Islam across the world is regressive, universally. Women's rights, freedom of religion, of speech, they don't exist in the Muslim world, EXCEPT in the American Muslim community. If American Muslims truly believe they're anything but an isolate minority, asea and adrift in a religion of ignorance, they're sadly mistaken. (Of course, much the same is true of Christianity...just look at our own GOP).

I do agree that our soldiers should not burn the quran. They should mail it to me, say what they want done with it, and I can do it with gusto on their behalf. The world can get mad at soldiers, but since I am not one, I can perform that service for free, and video tape it, and no one gets mad at them. The decision to burn the books in the first place was dumb. The books were from a library for prisoners in Afghanistan, and it was discovered that some were being used to pass messages. Good reason to halt all prisoner access to the books. Burning the books was dumb, though, and burning the Quran was even dumber. The soldiers had no idea what they were buring (other than books) because the books were written using Arabic script (no matter which language they were written in). It was people WATCHING the burning that notices the Quran was among the books being burned.

Mrs Georgia Peach - you should really get your facts straight. Obama did not cancel the National Day of Prayer. He, as all presidents before him (since it was established) issued a Proclamation to recognize the day. In fact, Geroge W. Bush is the only president who held the National Day of Prayer at the White House for the full 8 years he was in office. Regan and HW Bush only held it once each at the White House, and Clinton never held one. Yet none of them were ever accused of "cancelling" the day. It's really amazing to me the lengths some people will go to to bash this president.

Why protect a book that they are using against us? Our service men are dying because of this. Why can't the reporting agency report the truth. Religious extremism of a very small minority which is allowed to control the operations of an entire country usually ends up destroying that country. Afgani civilians were the ones who actually did the burning, and that's why they were found, because when they realized that there were Qurans in the trash they stopped burning the trash! The last blasphemy trial in America where somebody was jailed for the charge was in 1838. There has never been a trial for apostasy since the inception of America. So why compare when there is no comparison? Islam cannot seem to answer for itself. Not sure of the accuracy of the article, but found a link through BBC that said the books were burned because there was communicatory messages found in them amongst detainees and because that's how the Q'ran is supposed to be disposed of if disposed of.
Doing more research before passing any judgement on the apology bit, other than no matter how bad some may see it, it at least diffused an already bad situation. But, I still think more of what's in my first post is involved.

Well I understand the offense of being upset about the Holy Book of Islam being burned. Yet like it's been noted here. American Muslims are much more liberal and lenient towards others and their cultural ignorance. They are also not as beholden to the actual Truths of Mohammed's words given to him from Allah. It also believes that their mission is to Redeem This Earth for Allah. Well I understand the offense of being upset about the Holy Book of Islam being burned. Yet like it's been noted here. American Muslims are much more liberal and lenient towards others and their cultural ignorance. They are also not as beholden to the actual Truths of Mohammed's words given to him from Allah. I have always argued that most don't know or understand the real truth about Islam and its future here on planet earth.
When 9/11 occurred here in the USA! I will never forget that day and where I was that day, what I was doing when I recieved the call from a friend that the USA had been attacked on it's own soil. I will not forget those images of the Towers smoking and the planes crashing into them. Seeing the people falling, jumping to their deaths because they did not want to die in fire or some other way. I will never forget. Then we are for a glorious few moments a UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. We are of One Mind, One will and One Vision. We then got behind our President.
Now here we are many many years later. The supposed troublemaker is gone and so is the President who launched the campaign to bring Osama Bin Laden to justice. Yet not the blame now for now all our nations woes. Now that President is the supposed reason for why our economy is where it is. Yet still the trouble is still there. Oh yeah we are supposedly out of Iraq. Which most Americans are ignorant of why we are the ones always that go to war! Why is it we and our military machine is always called upon to take care of the Worlds woes.
Now here we are today and the problem of Al-Qaeda still arise. Now a nation is still doing what its been doing since 1979. Why is this going on? Flag Burning: A few days ago some howled that a flag was lowered by Gov Christie in NJ for Whitney Houston. Right wingers have tried to pass law after law making it illegal, protests of flag burnings have become violent. There is no difference except that our flag stands for freedom, and the core of that is the right to burn that flag in protest. I like to think of our flag as nothing more than a piece of cloth, burn all you want, we can make more...because what it STANDS for is much stronger--and that you cannot burn. (FYI I personally would not burn the flag, but I will fight for your right to do so...then I will show up to protest your doing it. That is freedom.
But don't howl about a flag burning and then joyfully support a Koran burning...it is hypocritical.

They feel threatened. Wouyld you feel threatened in Mexico came up here, took over our nation and tried to modernize our thoughts to coincide with theirs? Hell yes, I would.
My problem lies in the basic utilization of our military. Our US Military is and has always been part of our national DEFENSE DEPARTMENT! Not INTERPOL or the Feed the Children Foundation or Christian Missionaries. It is for the defense of our nation. Now, if we were in Afghanistan in a mission of defense and even vengance, we could kill and destroy and crush the nation. Leave them to their devices because when we leave, regardless of what the government and military leaders tell you, terrorist organizations will reoccupy the land and we will have to bomb the hell out of them again. Why spend a trillion dollars there trying to change a frame of mind that is burned and ingrained in those people for 7 centuries????? Personally I think Obama could have offered an apology/explanation. I just read someone's post who pointed out these books were being used to pass notes between prisoners. This red herring again?! Some people can't tell the difference between the Dale Carnegie method and a religious choice. Even if he was muslim (he isn't), so what? There is no religious test for POTUS. The President is not required to be a Christian. So what if we have a President who is Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, or even Atheist or Agnostic? The religious beliefs of the cadidate are not a requirement to hold office, nor should it change their duties to the people whom they represent. Honestly, have you seen any politicians obeying the "Thou shalt not lie" commandment? How many of our nation's politicians are Christian? How many are Jews?
To those who have a problem with the President apologizing, he is using the Dale Carnegie method, which is a universally good method for dealing with people no matter what their religion, culture, ethnicity, gender, or any other self identifying feature is. The point is not that we did something wrong, the point is that if he didn't apologize, and in fact did what you are suggesting and piss in their faces, then the situation would get inflamed and spiral out of control.
This is not a case of him being weak or a Muslim. This is the case of the POTUS being a diplomat and keeping this situation from becoming worse than it already is. It's not about who's right and who's wrong. It's about maintaining control of the situation through psychological manipulation.

Under this specific set of circumstances - I believe he would have apologized for the burning of the Torah, the Book of Mormon, etc. etc. etc. I would also believe he is attempting to ward off other situations that led to the shooting of the two soldiers. Obama did not order the buring of the Koran. The issue and responsibility lies with those in charge who ordered the books burned. They were fools who lack training. They know or should know better.

He did not hold it this year at the White House, but as is standard custom, he did issue a proclaimation acknowledging it. As I said in my original post, the ONLY president to hold the day of prayer ceremony at the White House every year was George W. Bush. Also, Obama did not hold a Muslim day of prayer. Please go to those websites I indicated in my previous post. Don't be afraid to find out the truth. You may find out that much of what you believe is either not true or only partially true. So...if a phalanx of Muslims showed up in our country and burned the Christian bible, many of you guys are saying that it wouldn't be a good reason to shoot one of them because "it's just a book"? From some of you I would believe that.
But I've heard from many above this that there are no Christian attacks on Muslims. So the cab driver in New York who was stabbed because he was a Muslim...was it because the kid was American or because the cab driver was Muslim? I'm not quite sure what the cab driver did to make the kid stab him...maybe it was because the student likened him to the people who attacked us in 2001. This is pretty much the same effect as burning Bibles in the Bible Belt (Southern USA), or burning a Flag... well, on the Bible Belt. If you saw it, you'd probably go into a frenzy. What I find really sad and scary is that so many would rather keep all of our troops in even greater danger by having our president be a harda** and not apologize. He had to at least try to quell some of the anger toward us by being diplomatic. It's so easy for people to come on here and cry about what he "should have" done. If you were in a situation where you could apologize and hopefully save some lives (even if you felt you had nothing to apologize for), or you could stand your ground and not apologize, and put people at even greater risk than they already are, what would you do?

Obama did exactly the right thing. Our military involvement in Afghanistan has nothing to do with religion. We pride ourselves here in america on respecitn religious freedom. Therefore, it is unseemly for representatives of this country to conduct themselves this way. Obama's respons makes perfect sense.

Reading all of this greives my heart deeply. I am a follower of Christ Jesus. 7 years ago, and MANY yrs before that, I hated God with a passion, AND all the worlds religions. I am 41 yrs old. Its not that I didnt believe in God, I just hated Him, therefore, I believed in Him. I would rather have spit in someones face then listen about this "loving God". This is an old school war. I digress from the story, which I read, and comment on the headline: a person is not a TROOP. Two people are not TROOPS. That the media persists in using "troop" in this manner is absurd. Technically a troop is a company sized element of a cav squadron. A trooper is an individual in the troop and troopers defines a group of troop members. However, in common usage troop is used to discribe individual soldiers even if it is poor grammar.
"Troop" is perfectly appropriate for discussion more than one soldier. A "troop" refers to a group of soldiers. A "trooper" is a single soldier ... but when used in this sense is almost always a Cav (or other mounted) soldier. (As a side note, troop and trooper are common nomenclature for state police officers.)
And, having worn boots myself, I see no issue in using this terminology, however it is used incorrectly in the headline as two individuals were killed, not two groups of soldiers.

Personally, I think we went about the war in Afghanistan in a wrong way. What we should have done was hit them with fuel air explosives until there was no oxygen left, before they scattered to the wind. Bleeding hearts will talk about the innocents. Well the "innocents" were complicit and accomplices because they do nothing about the bad elements in their society. We have laws here for that and it might explain the differences in our societies.
I think this strategy would have sent an extremely strong message not to mess with us, plus it could have been done over in a couple of days with no one on the ground. Instead of having to apologize.

If President Obama wore the "R" jersey, the headline would read "2 U.S. Service Members or 2 which ever branch of service they belonged to shot dead" but troops is used to try and take some emotion out of it. Also, if a Republican were in office, there would be daily reminders of any force losses such as conflict body counts and a mention of each member lost. That's wrong, because force losses should be reported on the same regardless of which party is in power, but that's not the way the game is played
My issue with this particular apology is that there is no way a thorough investigation has been conducted and I want to wait until it is. I am not convinced that U.S. or any other coalition forces would be stupid enough to burn Quran's after all of the efforts made in the last five years to teach Soldiers about Muslim and Arab sensitivities. Coming back to the original topic...our military disposed (by burning, which is actually the official, proper Islamic way to dispose of a Quran) of some Qurans which had already been defaced by Muslims and used as scratch paper--by Muslims-- on which to write anti-American messages and pass on plans and info from one Afghan prisoner to another to be used against us. In a war.
Let's not forget what's going on there, and why we're there (generously/foolishly giving Qurans to Afghani war prisoners, and pens, apparently, and the sheltered leisure time in which to write in them).
So this is now a huge big deal that we have to apologize over. To the people who are killing our men and women...who are there trying to defend the Afghanis' fledgling democracy.
These Afghanis, who are suddenly so sensitive about religious books and artifacts, blew to smithereens two enormous, 1,000-year-old Buddhist statues carved into a mountainside. Did the Buddhists riot and kill people over that? Did the Muslims ever apologize?
Our US military burned several hundreds of Christian Bibles that a church in the States had had translated, at their own expense, into a couple of Afghan languages and sent over there to be made available, free, to any Afghani who was interested. Our government decided to burn them, just in case these sensitive Muslim souls might find someone else's holy book provocative. Did the Christians riot and kill people? Did Obama et al apologize to Christians for burning, in a heap, hundreds of their holy book?

I agree with a freind of mine, what he had said related to them burning our flag, which they percieve as ok even when we did nothing wrong, but anyways they burn our flag, then we burn their country.

I recall reading that there qurans were used in a prison to transfer messages among the inmates and were destined to be destroyed for that reason. Maybe if these savages hadn't desecrated the books by doodling in the margin we wouldn't be having this conversation. These quarans were also amongst a lot of other trash that was headed to the incinerator like usual. This was not some maniacal plat by the military, just taking out trash.
The doodlings were anatomically unlikely sketches of forbidden sex acts and the writings were mainly concerned with arranging 'dates' in the lavatories. The extremists should be murdering those of their OWN faith who desecrated their holy book with such filth. That's why those copies of the Koran were burned. The 5th Century was a Golden Age in Afghanistan. Buddhists were living there, probably among neighbors with other beliefs too. In harmony and brotherhood. They (the Buddhists there) hand-carved beautiful, priceless, towering statues into the solid rock walls in Bamyan, Afghanistan. Stunning, gorgeous monuments to their wise and peaceful founder.
The 7th and 8th Century, however, brought the conquering armies of Islam. Buddhists were massacred and driven out. The writ of Islam and the Koran was made Supreme. All Non-muslim beliefs and people were converted, subjugated, or killed, just as the Koran says to be done.
Finally, in the 20th Century, the Muslim Taliban got around to blowing up those beautiful stone monuments to Buddha. Such icons and images, even though of a different faith (or especially so) are to be DESTROYED. So says the Koran.
So why did it take so long ? It was only in the 20th Century that explosives powerful enough to do the job were invented. Once available, the remnants of pre-Islamic Afghanistan were destroyed.
And that, my friends, is what the Qur'an says to do. Blowing up the Bamyan Buddhas was the Taliban way to honor THEIR founder Muhammad and the hateful creed he invented.

This day has been hard on me. Your supportve posts help some. I don't know that I've done very well chefaz. I kept trying to make multiple points at once and didn't focus very well on any it felt like. Then there is also my offense at msnbc having taken down comments b/c -- as it looked to me -- the editor just plain didn't like them. So that was eating at me too. And people getting killed over this! And other people basically apologizing to the killers!! So it's affected me negatively, yes, and I'm not as balanced as I like to be on here today. The poor sell their very young sons to the rich merchants - we would call them pimps - they are then sold into slavery - dressed as girls, taught to dance, wait on them and used for sex. An apology had to come from somebody. Those soldiers being killed over there are American children...so an avoidable act that puts them in more danger than they are already in is wrong. The families of those soldiers are now missing sons because of that.

If it is done that way then it is the role of his supreme commander in the field to make the apology. History also allows for the Secretary of Defense to make the apology. This is the first time in our history that a President has made such an apology. Just add this to Obama's long list of "Firsts." The head of that page reads "List of Major F. Our soldiers have been in Afghanistan for long enough to know that the Muslims hold their Quran in even higher reverence than the average American Christian holds their Bible. They have also been there long enough to know that Afghanistan is a poor country. When you have little, everything you do own is much more valuable.
Yes, it's easy for most of us here in the us to say 'it's only a book, why fuss' but different cultures have different standards and when we are in those different countries we have to be respectful of their beliefs even if we don't agree with them.
So with that being said, the actions of a few US soldiers have brought discredit upon the many-the UN and NATO forces. (in much the same way that the actions of a few Muslims on 9-11 brought discredit on all Muslims everywhere.) The Afghani people are angry and the only fix I can see is for us to withdraw our troops and allow the UN to spearhead rebuilding efforts there. I don't think we (America) could accomplish anything else here and at this point our continued presence will be detrimental to the stabilization efforts the international community is trying to accomplish.

The books were left behind when Afghani prisoners were released by US/UN forces and the books were thrown in the trash, to be lugged out to incinerators later. Afghani citizens who were handling the trash pulled the books out, sparking the controversy. Did you read this bit from the article?

Our leaders apologized for the actions of our soldiers, but sometimes apologies aren't enough, especially when we've been there for long enough to know that they believe that their holy book is sacrosanct. So I stand by my belief that the only way to settle the Afghani people is to withdraw our troops and allow NATO and the UN to take the lead. And you have to remember too, that this is just the latest in a list of offenses our military has wrought, starting with the Abu Ghraib mess, through that deplorable incident with the soldiers urinating on the corpses of the dead, and now this desecration of the Muslim holy book.
You seem to forget it was burned accidentally. When they realized what they were burning it was stopped. The burn pits on the bases burn just about everything and some times private contractors control the burning of rubbish and not soldiers. There is no excuse killing over a book. It proves that these people don't cherish human life.
Just about all trash is burned on these bases. The books were written in Arabic not English, most soldiers don't read or speak Arabic and the ones that do are generally used in intelligence. Having served in the military and being deployed to Iraq I have an idea of how this played out. A bunch of low ranking soldiers and a NCO were detailed to clean out the prison area. The soldiers being on a detail from their normal duties went in to get this done as fast a humanly possible so they could go to bed or chow or their normal duties. They grabbed everything that wasn't nailed down to be burned and shoved it into bags and boxes and put it on a truck to go to the burn pit. A bunch of hired Afghan workers were used to throw the trash into the burn pit where one of them noticed that some of the books were the quran and then the books were pulled out. It was simply a mistake and they corrected it as best they could.
Brian, If the Afghans were burning bibles, accidentally or not, I'm guessing some if not most of those saying "it's just a book" would be screaming for revenge let alone an apology.

But in this case i don't really think it's about the book burning itself, it's more about the continued and continual disrespect that the US has continually displayed throughout the course of the Middle East engagement. And I'll admit I'm not guiltless. When I was in the Raymondville TX (Ritmo, because human rights watch said it looked and felt like Guantanamo Bay/Gitmo) deportation camp some years ago as a detained 'illegal', my list of worldly posessions was narrowed to three books. The first time one was stolen I got into a fight trying to get it back--and got put in solitary for a week. It wasn't that I was angry that my books were stolen, it was the fact that these three books were all I had left of my life and I didn't know if I was ever going to be released from ICE detention.
When I got out of solitary all three of my books were stolen, gone, never got them back, and I learned then the futility of trying to hold onto or accumulate things. The most precious things you have are those you carry in your own mind, and no one can take those away from you.

I would like to point out that when these Afgans were released from their prison, they left behind this "most valuable book" without a second thought. Was it too heavy for them to carry out? Maybe they couldn't read, and they didn't know which book it was, so they left it behind accidentally?

I was kind of thinking the same thing. The only possible reason I can think of would be; that for some reason, they weren't allowed to take the books because they were issued to them by (maybe) the military itself as a sign of respect. And therefor is property of the Military.

If I may respond to this: The United States of America is the preeminent power on this planet and that status holds us to a higher standard. If we want to claim moral superiority, we have to live it.

Actually, according to the laws of this land everyone is guaranteed inalienable human rights. Death threats, food and sleep deprivation, physical and sexual abuse are definitely a violation of those human rights. When I tried to go to rape counseling after the 3 years I spent in the deportation camp they pretty much said the same thing--rape isn't a crime if you've been declared 'illegal'. Child rape isn't a crime if the child is illegal. Having people videotape you peeing isn't a crime if you're illegal. Having a guard take you out, make you kneel, and pull a trigger on an empty gun pointed at your head isn't a crime if you're illegal. We watched 'Schindler's List' in high school history class; at that time I never dreamed some of those same things happen here in America.

For your information, I was here legally, had never broken a law, graduated high school on the honor roll with a full scholarship to an art school to learn how to be a police sketch artist. USCIS lost my adoption paper 18 years after it was filed and decided that made me an illegal. I couldn't prove I wasn't because my parents never told me I was adopted before they passed away suddenly in a car accident. When DHS found out I was 'stateless' (don't have a 'home country' to be deported to) they said I would spend the rest of my life in the deportation camp unless I could produce the adoption paper. It took me three years but I did finally find it.
The Patriot Act indemnifies Homeland Security and its agents and component divisions from lawsuits because they are acting in the interests of national security. So i can't file abuse/harassment charges with ICE. I was, in my opinion, unlawfully incarcerated but i can't seek any kind of redress. I'm not blaming America or Americans for what happened; I blame ICE but there is absolutely nothing i can do about it.
Enough about me; back to the topic of the article. Let's pull our troops out of Afghanistan--there's nothing we're doing there right now that other NATO forces can't handle.

The problem is that people subject to torture haven't been convicted as terrorists. The civilized world gave up torture a long time ago because it recognized that it was inhumane and didn't yield reliable information. Well Bob I will argue with you on it and I am a conservative and I agree with Brian. First, you are right when you say everyone can choose for themselves if they want contraception or not. What you don't get is that Christians of different religions do not believe in contraception-it is against our religion. Some people of those religions don't agree and some do. There is the argument in the religion itself about contraception-if we don't have it-we would be over-populated and lots of disease going around-the chuches argument on that is-control yourself-really everyone is running around sleeping with everybody-it's immoral. Then the religion preaches practicing family planning which in most cases does not work, but it is also a form a preventing children from being born-so what is the difference between that and birth control. Those who are true to their religion lives by these laws, those who do not cannot really call themselves Christians-they are hypocrites. The point is that contraception (for both men and women), abortion, etc., should not be paid for by insurance companies because people who don't believe in it are being forced to pay for it when it is against their moral conscience. Insurance companies are not going to give it for free-someone is going to pay for it and it is the tax dollars that pay for it, which includes Christians who pay taxes. I for one do not want my tax dollars paying for someone to murder an unborn baby or for someone to to enjoy their sexual pleasures at my expense. Insurance companies also have been covering Viagra and should not be. If you want those pleasures, then you should pay for it out of your own pocket. If you want an abortion pay for it out of your own pocket. No one is telling women that they can't have it-they are just saying that they should not have to go against their religious beliefs to pay for it. If you want to call yourself Christian and have an abortion, use contraception, etc... that is between you and God when your day comes, but it is not the right of the governement to force people who don't believe in it to pay for it.

Obama, as the Commander and Chief, of the armed forces apologized in an attempt to prevent further death of AMERICAN and NATO soldiers. For those of you who are lambasting him for apologizing, you must not care for the welfare of US soldiers & NATO soldiers who are in Afghanistan. The Taliban (not al Qaida) are using this to rally the people against NATO troops so this “advantage” must be diffused by those at the highest levels of command. This should be common sense to you. If an adversary gains an advantage one must find a way to neutralize it as effectively and quickly as possible.

If I was stuck cleaning out a trash pit prison, I would have assumed that the, supposedly, "ultra religious" prisoners would have taken along anything of such value to them. I just got back from over there last month, and some of my best friends are still in Khost. Some how you have gotten the idea that Obama is great military mind. He had an epiphany, and decided to send a SEAL team in to kill the bad guys. You don't think that SOCOM/JSOC has been operating extensively for the last 10 years in Afghanistan? Until that last couple years, Ranger, SF, SEAL, DELTA, and other Spec Ops units constituted the majority of the surgical strike operations. If you don't think that "W" was sending us after Bin Laden LONG before Obama got into the White House, you're really sadly mistaken. I lost several friends there during the "quiet time" before the last surge. There is no good/easy solution anywhere in the Middle East. Their cultures don't tolerate diversity inany form, and they certainly don't respect or appreciate apologies. Some cultures only understand and respect (fear) strength and resolve. That's why guys like Saddam and Gaddafi stayed in power for so long. As Americans (in general), we no longer have the stomach/balls to be the world's leader. Had we been so politically correct 70 years ago, we would all be speaking German right now. History will decide how good of a President Obama will be, but as a military leader, he doesn't have a clue.

However, the Koran DOES advocate the killing of people who don't agree with the Islamic ways. First READ the Bible and then decide....don't follow errant people. Lintra - In case you didn't notice, it's better to fight terrorists on THEIR soil...not ours. We don't like terrorists here...The Afghans hide them and produce them. They won't come here to "occupy" they come to terrorize and kill innocent people. To imply they would "occupy" means they try to manage and maintain a semblance of peace. Terrorists don't "occupy" anything...they kill and spread terror (hence the term TERRORIST).
And for the record....most of us don't CARE how Japan felt when they DID invade us. What are you thinking? You think Japan TRIED to invade us? Is your history book different than mine. So I suppose the thousands of dead soldiers trapped in Naval vessel coffins underwater in Pearl Harbor is just a figment of our imagination? Yeah....."we people are crazy" time for a self-check lady.
Uh...Japan did TRY to invade us and horribly failed. No Japanese bases were set up on Pearl Harbor, they bombed us and were repelled. And you might want to check your facts sir, not a soul from Afghanistan has ever committed a terrorist act against our country. The terrorist who flew the planes into the towers were both Saudi sir. And could you please point out exactly which terrorists we are fighting??? What does a terrorist look like??? Oh yeah, how is that whole fight them on their own soil thing working out for us sir...This is not conventional warfare genius, so you can't use conventional methods. Didn't your mom ever teach you that someone somewhere will always hate you, you can't always win with force. The only thing he has done thus far is the repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell and claim ownership for killing Bin Laden. In truth, killing Bin Laden started long before he ever got in office. Had he not made the choice to move that night, it is very likely the ass would have been impeached.

Did it ever occur to you that he could be apologizing to prevent further threat to the U.S. All of this negativity is ridiculous.
