Updated at 8:11 a.m. ET: A suicide car bomber struck early Monday at the gates of Jalalabad airport in eastern Afghanistan, killing nine people in a large blast, officials said.
Among the dead were six civilians, two airport guards and one soldier, Mohammad said. Another six people were wounded, he said.
An AP photographer saw at least four destroyed cars at the gates of the airport.
The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, that they also say killed a number of U.S. soldiers and members of the Afghan interior ministry, a spokesman told NBC News.
"Our suicide bomber carried out suicide attack at a time when the U.S. troops opened the main entrance for change of the night time shift at the airport. Besides American soldiers, a number of Afghanistan interior ministry personnel working (with) the U.S. troops were also killed in the attack," the Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told NBC News.
He said it was revenge of the desecration of holy Quran allegedly by U.S. forces at the Bagram airbase.
But NATO forces spokesman Capt. Justin Brockhoff said that no international forces were killed in the early morning attack and that the installation was not breached by the blast.
Escalating violence
The blast comes a day after demonstrators hurled grenades at a U.S. base in northern Afghanistan, and a gun battle left two Afghans dead and seven NATO troops injured Sunday in the escalating crisis over the burning of Muslim holy books at an American airfield.
Violence toward Americans in Afghanistan continues as eight soldiers were wounded during a protest. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.
More than 30 people have been killed, including four U.S. troops, in six days of unrest. Still, the top U.S. diplomat in Afghanistan said the violence would not change Washington's course.
"Tensions are running very high here, and I think we need to let things calm down, return to a more normal atmosphere, and then get on with business," Ambassador Ryan Crocker told CNN's "State of the Union."
"This is not the time to decide that we're done here," he said. "We have got to redouble our efforts. We've got to create a situation in which al-Qaida is not coming back."

The attack on the base came a day after two U.S. military advisers — a lieutenant colonel and a major — were found dead after being shot in the head in their office at the Interior Ministry in the heart of the capital. The building is one of the city's most heavily guarded buildings, and the slayings raised doubts about safety as coalition troops continue their withdrawal.
The incident prompted NATO, Britain and France to recall hundreds of international advisers from all Afghan ministries in the capital. The advisers are key to helping improve governance and preparing the country's security forces to take on more responsibility.
A manhunt was under way for the main suspect in the shooting — an Afghan man who worked as a driver for an office on the same floor as the advisers who were killed, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said. He did not provide further details about the suspect or his possible motive.

The Taliban claimed that the shooter was one of their sympathizers and that an accomplice had helped him get into the compound to kill the Americans in retaliation for the Quran burnings.
President Obama's apology to Afghanistan for the burning of Qurans at a U.S. base may become a campaign issue. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.
Afghanistan's defense and interior ministers were to visit Washington this week, but they called off the trip to consult with other Afghan officials and religious leaders on how to stop the violence, Pentagon press secretary George Little said. The Afghan officials had planned to meet with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey.
The protesters in Kunduz province in the north threw hand grenades to express their anger at the way some Qurans and other Islamic texts were disposed of in a burn pit last week at Bagram Air Field, north of Kabul.

I'm all for love and peace, but I think it's time we leave. I'm tired of these people killing troops over simple books. It'll be DECADES before any changes can be found and we don't have the time or resource to do so.
The time to leave is NOW. These people are too primitive to be helped. If after ten years of military assistance a few clerics can whip up this sort of disorder - a disorder that Karzai is unable or unwilling to calm - then the disposal by burning of already desecrated Korans has become the GAME CHANGER.
The GAME for Karzai is over and NATO need to withdraw NOW. To use a poker analogy - FOLD 'em.
I'm certain all we need to do is sit down with them and talk. They are a reasonable people and we have a mutual respect for one another. They respond better to "peace and understanding". Perhaps if we offered them free passage and visas to all who want to come to America and spread their love and compassion and to experience the freedom they so much desire to have in their lives. Sure, we'll have to allow for sharia law throughout the nation and to make mandatory the study of Islam and free Qurans to all American students but I'm sure Obama won't have a problem with those edicts.
And, the time to stop their spread to the West is NOW as well.
Time to close borders, start deporting, and get tough.

What cancer is spreading within our borders? Are you living in constant fear that Muslims will have mass suicide attacks on us from people that are citizens? I dont see American born Muslims blowing themselves up on a consistent basis to warrant a Hitler type reaction in the US to get rid of people based on religion if they are citizens. I am pretty sure their actions of late are a blatant signal that Afghan's really, really dont want us there.
Despite trying to be more humanitarians about our occupation, we are failing like Russia did. Russia's exit strategy and withdraw are almost the same as ours... Failing to transfer the burden of fighting the mujahideen to the Afghan armed forces!

Although I am against rounding up the muslims in the US Pete does have kind of a point. In the ten years we have been over there, we have imported more people from that region than we did in the 225 years before and they have spread like ghosts. And if our governments knowledge of illegals from Mexico is any indication, they have no idea where they are. I think that has the potential to be a very nasty situation.

No, I don't mean to round up and deport any legal citizens simply because of their beliefs. I was mainly referring to illegals and thinking of the problems in Europe right now, not here in the US. However, in terms of cancer, I don't look favorably upon the nation of Islam and its spread in this country. So there is that. And I worry that with our somewhat liberal immigration policies we are in fact letting in sleepers and elements that would seek to conspire against us. But yes we have that in our own citizens.
I don't think we can turn around the middle east as long as fundamentalism and terrorism go hand in hand there. However if there are truly peaceful Muslims who don't follow the seething hatred and push for global conquest that their book demands, I'm all for 'em.

A little story.
My wife was taking a class at the University of Minnesota. Since her sister worked downtown, they decided to go to lunch. My wife is a little directionally challenged, if you tell her to go right, she goes left. Well, she went left. Walking down the block she was surprised there was no traffic, on the street or the sidewalks. She went a block and called her sister, telling her that she thought she took a wrong turn. Her sister having worked downtown for a couple of years simply told her to turn around and get out of there.
As she walked back, all the shopkeepers and patrons were lined up in front of the shops. As she walked by, they spat on her and cursed about American women.
My wife came home and told me about what had happened. I called a friend of mine that is a Minneapolis cop. He told me that he knew of the street and referred to it as Somalitown. He also couldn't believe that she walked through there as the police officers are even instructed not to. They don't even enforce our laws there because they will cry racism. He also told me that most of them came here on visitors visas, disappeared and that 90% were illegal.
This was two years ago. Now, I don't think there is a Walmart that doesn't employ one.
About a month ago, I was walking through the Mall of America, kind of ironic. I would say that about 80% of the stores had someone working there in garb. I was in a store looking around when a woman in garb walked in and started packing products under her outfit, and then she walked out. I went to the checkout and asked if he saw the woman. He said that he did, but he was instructed by management not to do anything because they didn't want to be perceived as racists.
Now, I am about 8 nationalities so I never thought that I had cause to be racist. But I came to an understanding that truly, all people are not the same. And while some I'm sure are here for noble reasons, there are a lot that are here and they really don't like us much.
I don't want to live my life in paranoia, but I can't help but think our society has become fatally politically correct.

Our military technology, as humans, does not allow for the "Muslim extremist" problem to be part of our life.
The fact that Muslim theocracies arm these "extremists" should tell you that at the very least they are using 80's era Soviet, Chinese, and American weapons. That isnt much of a deal to our Fifth Fleet currently guarding the Strait of Hormuz. That fleet alone could and would sink every ship larger than a 10 foot jonboat that Iran has in a matter of 48 hours. Probably less. The problem is that Muslims believe that if they kill themselves they go to some fantasy island with the whole virgin bs. This must be a pretty big motivator considering the conditions that most Muslims live in. The amount of damage that Iranian shia Muslim suicide bombers could do is difficult to think about.
A whole group of what are normally a very nice people, Persian, Arab, etc. tainted by an archaic religion.

Most of the tribal Afghanis probably can’t even read and as a result are easily influenced and “brainwashed” by their imams and mullahs. There is not much to do in the mountains so they have plenty of time to listen to them…..and this is the result! We will never be able to install anything resembling democracy to these people. No matter how hard we try we will not succeed.
I heard that Osama’s compound in Abbottabad was demolished by Pakistan’s government yesterday. That ends this chapter in our history. There is no need to lose any more lives; we need to get out of the region now!

Did anyone hear about the recent case in Philadelphia? A Muslim was brought in on an assault charge for attacking a man in a Halloween costume, whose costume offended the Muslim's tender sensibilities--so he attacked him.
He was brought before a judge in Philly who, it turns out, is also Muslim. And while there was no dispute about the assault--he freely admitted he attacked the guy--the judge put all the blame on the man in the costume (the victim), because according to Shariah Law it is a big offense to in any way insult Islam, and the Muslim's response therefore--attacking him--was the proper one.
It's being 'looked into'. Coming soon to a city near you...

So tell Obama and the tree hugger's, that in the name of national security we are going to drill wherever there is oil, ween ourselves from theirs (we have enough to outlast what they can produce), and get rid of the pansies we have in Washington that do not have the balls to do this. And if the ACLU or any other attorneys want to block them, then put them in jail for putting our national security in jeopardy.

I am all for making sure illegals dont come. I dont disagree that that religion in the middle east is a lost cause. Those people all need to fight it out and maybe since majority are under 25 and want change even if the entire middle east loses 50% of its population killing each other the future may get better. Regardless we need to stay out, they kill each other for thousands of years and will for a thousand more just amongst each other. But the educated ones and younger ones in countries like UAE are much different. Islam scares me in terms of how all the uneducated and in many of these countries they are brainwashed with hate from birth. And that cycle continues. I dont think that the Muslim community that says its a minority does enough to prove it then. They dont stop it. they dont fight to show its not right. And thats on them.
I fear the extremest terrorists that live over there. I dont fear American Muslims however. I think they are as likely to kill people as anyone. Are monitored and have checks that make even what it takes to work in military intelligence as an American's background check which is vigorous look like a joke. It was the right thing to do.We know how sensitive it is to them. And an apology for it is fine. With that in mind. If they cant accept the apology, And Karzai inflames people and calls for a trial and because of it they kill or harm Americans. Now I say we saud sorry. It was a mistake. Your religion of peace can accept it. Or show your nutcases. Your protection as president from American contractors is gone now. See if your owncan protect you. And your people can demonstrate all they want. But if they come with xxx yards of our compound again like they did before throwing a grenade they will be thought of as aggresive enemy combatants and if you want something to be upset about it will be Americans defending themselves against mobs who wan to kill people cause a book was burned and apologized for.

Jonathan isn't that the reason for the present unrest. this attempt to delay the withdrawal of the US military from that country and to keep the billions of dollars flowing there while we cannot even afford to rebuild our own infrastructure or continue public assistance or the unemployment insurance benefits to our own people in our own country?
How long is long enough? The Russians stayed there for 12 years and in the end only served to destroy their own economy and country while nothing changed in Afghanistan.
It is time to leave as planned period. This country is not ready for really meaningful change at this time. Plus it looks like they are simply a pawn in a greater game of capitalistic greed at the expense of the American masses. We gain nothing from being there and lose a lot more by staying there.
The burning of the Quarans was just too convenient imo. How was it found out that these Holy Books were burnt in the first place? Are we to believe that no one saw them amoung the stuff put out for burning until it was too late? Who saw them being burnt and did nothing about it? Who is to say that it was not done on purpose to start this unrest?
After all these years of being in that country and knowing the effects of something of this nature on the people there, how did the Quarans get in the pile to be burnt and to conveniently have a witness or witnesses to the burning or the aftemath? It is time to leave these folks alone. No matter what is done it is going to revert to what it was especially in such a partiachial society oftentimes ruled by ignorance. That is why education is so important. It is more difficult to negatively influence educated persons especially if they are able to read and think for themselves.
Now folks can understand why these T'publicondinos are attacking education and want to do away with public education and or to limit education to a chosen few, because by not providing a public education to all, there will always be an underclass of malliable people who will believe and do whatever they are told including voting against their own best interest. This we have seen happening in our own country and the effects of same in the 2010 elections, with the rise of some of these folks of the Brietbart, Santorum, Gingrich etc and Fauxers persuasion.
The chaos that is Afghanistan seems to be the norm for them, but is not the norm for us. Trying to rebuild their infrastructure is only helping the rich etc in that country, while our country's infrastructure etc continues to deteriorate and it becomes increasingly difficult to provide for the needs of our citizens even as our deficit continues to rise.
What do we gain from being there? Nothing. What do we lose by being there? Lives lost and enormous amounts of money lost, disappeared, stolen if I am not mistaken. With all the money spent there, there should be paved roads, schools built, decent housing for the population etc.
The mission was completed with the death of BinLaden etc. It is time to leave these folks to their own devices. Haven't they already made arrangements with China to mine their minerals? The Taliban folks are playing hardball. They know that they will have to start providing more than words for their people once the foreign military types are gone taking their monies with them. It is easier to keep blaming the foreign military for all the ills and issues etc plaguing their country.
Time that we start taking care of our own citizens and country for a change.
Perhaps the withdrawal of the military should be brought forward to happen sooner.

I was on the 8 soldiers wounded thread last night. It appeared that there were soldiers in Afghanistan on the thread. I can't verify that it is true, but along with the apology, came rules of engagement that doesn't allow our soldiers to protect themselves. If that is true, it might explain why there aren't 400 dead protesters turned combatants.
Like I said, I don't know if this is true, but if it is, it would be quite sad that politics is trumping the safety of our soldiers.

We cannot invoke peace on the population of a country so willing to turn a blind eye to the problems they created in the first place. Until they tire of the death, disease (ignorance) and complete violation of basic human rights they cannot be saved. We are trying to save them from themselves and it will never happen.
The people of those countries have been at war within their own populations as well as neighboring countries for thousands of years. We will not change them. BRING OUR TROOPS HOME!!!!

David, I think you need to read it more carefully. It is really entirely different from the Bible. It talks about some of the same names from the Bible, but changes the stories about them significantly, changes the meanings behind them. For example, Jesus is mentioned in the Quran but it emphasizes that he is NOT the son of the Lord.
What differentiates it from the Bible most of all, however, is that the Bible teaches us to live in peace and harmony with other people, and to treat all others with honesty, justice, and compassion. It never says "If you believe in me, your first job and your highest calling is to rid the world of everyone who does NOT believe in me." [And if you don't believe in me, the other believers will rid the world of you.]
The Bible never says, If you lose your faith, stop believing, choose to worship in a different faith or no faith...you must be killed.
Islam is the only "religion"--[and it's really more of a political system for world domination with a veneer of religiosity to motivate its practitioners and justify this aim]--that orders its adherents to kill in the name of its god, as far as I know.
It is possible to have different interpretations of the Bible Livia. The one you state seems to be based on the New Testament . If you are referring especially to the Old Testament perhaps you should read again . While it does have mention of harmony and peace it glaringly stands out as very very violent . It certainly does not lack in brothers smiting brothers over who is right and wrong. It does not lack in horrendous treatment of women and daughters . And the God of this Bible is a very insecure fellow . Remember this is the God of all creation yet still he runs around with mere humans and stomps them out like ants if they do not worship him . Of course that was back in the day as he seems to have cooled down after Job told him and Lucifer off .

One major problem with the Quran is that it is absolutely unchangeable and unmodifiable (according to Islamic law, which, similarly, cannot be altered or reinterpreted without incurring a sentence of heresy...punishable by death). Islam teaches as an article of faith that the Quran pre-existed the Creation. In other words, before there was the world, before there was light, before there was man...there was the Quran. It is the template for all of existence. Therefore nothing in it can ever be changed.
This makes Islam a rigid theological system that is forcibly frozen in the mores of the primitive time and place from which it came.

I have read the Book of Revelations. You have read and interpreted what is convenient to you just like the militant Muslims conveniently find their teaching gives them rights to kill and keep killing. There is more to the Bible that teaches you not to act like these weaklings, but it's your choice. Followers of Islam have been killing each other for hundreds of years. One tribe doesn't accept the teachings of the other tribes, so each tribe sees the others as infidels -virtually beings with no use to them. These followers have remained stagnant to understanding how to live with others in Harmony for a very, very long time. Who are we to walk into their violent culture and believe we can correct it. They rise up to exercise their strength when it's easy to do against free people. They rose up against the French in 2010 after a Muslim man was killed by police. In retaliation other Muslims burned more than 50 cars. Never mind the reason he was fired on by police. In Denmark the prophet cartoons were against Islamic teachings. Retaliation resulted in more than 100 people killed and additional violence elsewhere in the world. There are many other 'justified' retaliations like this that the West finds excessive and out of control. Keep the followers of Islam in the Middle Eastern countries where they can kill each other according to their teachings and get us out of their lives.
