A teenager in Scotland who was told to clean his room last month discovered more than just dirty socks: He found 12 lottery tickets, among them, a winner.
STV in Scotland reported that after his mother nagged him for weeks, Ryan Kitchin, of Penicuik, discovered the stub but didn’t know he had picked a lucky combination of five numbers and the bonus ball for the Feb. 8 draw.
"I was about to bin them but at the last minute I got this strange feeling that I should get them checked,” Kitchin, 19, told the Telegraph of London.
Instead, he brought the tickets to Tesco, the supermarket store where he works part time.
At work, a colleague checked the numbers and named him a winner -- although Kitchin couldn’t tell how much he was about to pocket. A call to the lottery operator Camelot revealed that he won £52,981, or $83,781.
“I had to phone up Camelot and the woman was asking me lots of questions, and I just wanted her to get to the point,” he said, according to the Mirror. “When I gave her the last number of the serial code, she said I had won £52,981. I just couldn't believe it.”
Kitchin’s plans? To pay off his car loan and take his mom on a much-needed vacation.

Always nice to read something good in the news.
A working teen, who cares about his mom. Better than nice.
for real on both of ya...
My son's room is a WRECK !!!.......I just printed this story out and put it on top of all the Krap on my son's computer desk....Plenty of Scratch-Off tickets on there....one can only hope !!!
How sweet it is! A nice smile for a Sunday evening.
after they tax it he might be able to take her to dinner and a movie
Randy-840072
Epic fail Randy. The British payout is tax free.
Really happy for Ryan. paying off the car and Mom on vacation is a terrific idea. Hopefully he will keep the rest and keep working. Gongrats Kid.
Lol Mike in DelRay! I plan on sending the story to mine - and a suggestion to buy $5 of Tuesday's MegaMillion Lotto - over $170million.
They can go to Universal Studios Islands of Adventure to see The Wizarding World of Harry Potter! He can buy his Mum a Butterbeer!
I certainly hope he'll be paying his tithes. And if he doesn't have a church, I'm sure I can whip one up. I've been thinking of bringing back Dagonism anyway.
Geez...all I ever found in my teenage son's room were dead fries, some of my kitchenware, dirty socks and underwear.
Really, though, it's good to see a thoughtful teen thinking about treating his mom. Good boy!
This is why you should always listen to your mother, you never know what might happen.
If the story is positive - you are still a teen at age 19yo. If you kill someone at 16yo, they want to say you are an adult. Just an observation - no judgement.
It is special when you can finally give back to your parents. I was 35yo when helping mom just became normal. Two and one half years now since mom passed away, seems like last week...those moms never change, they mom right up to the end...and from the grave too!HA!
Good boy or man, whatevr he considers himself. His mother should be proud.
I bet he cleans his room more often!! HSaver legally a man but they're always moms' boy. Manly thing paying his bills and treating mom though. A lot of young adults out there think their parents owe them everything and don't get treating their folks well. Good job Ryan!!
I started to clean my room the moment I read this article.... Way to go bro. Hope the two of you have a nice vacation.
Um well "teen" just means your age is in the teens. You can be a teenager and an adult, not mutually exclusive.
Hahaha I love that he's being productive. I'm going to pay off my loan and then be nice to my mom. Aww
Parents all over the world now have a new tactic to use to get their kids to clean their rooms: "Go clean your room! You may hit the lottery like that kid in Scotland!" In all seriousness, this is a very cool story to read, and it's nice that the kid wants to use the winnings to treat his mom to a trip.
Great News story,Congrats to the winner, and another thought Look before you throw it away, whatever it might be.
STV, this only goes to prove "listen to your mother!" Should be required reading for all "kids."
not my mother ,she would just piss it all away on more gambling
Awwww....sorry Mark!
It must be a lesson about staying organized. I have a whole drawer full of loosing lottery tickets beside my bed. If I ever win I am going to write them all off when I pay the taxes.
You can only write off ones from the year of the winner. Go to a horse track and pick up some losing tickets off the ground if you really hit a big one. Or, here's a novel concept, if you hit a nice winner you could actually afford the taxes on it!
Rlquall, bad news. you can only write off your losses for that tax year. So, if you play $5.00 a week, you could write off $259.00. Win now, 'cause Obama's budget calls for a 4.6% tax increase for everyone.
Riquall and Mark,
Now for the really bad news, you can only write your losses off against your form 1099 gaming winnings. So, if you don't win you lose....
Wow Mark-just had to drag politics into this kids' good fortune. Gosh don't people get over worrying about politics every minute of every day???? Forget about it for awhile and try to enjoy some good news. Mark your gonna give yourself an ulcer if not a heart attack!!!!!
Mark, has it ever dawned on you that the only way to get the Republicans to agree that the rich pay more is to have an increase for everyone?? It's called "the art of compromise". However, I expect the Republicans will slide in exceptions for their rich friends, as usual. Now ---- back to topic ----
It IS nice to hear some good news. And especially so when it involves a son cleaning his room, and his mother who nagged him about it. Happy endings are good for the soul!
Only if by "everyone" you mean everyone making over $250,000 a year.
nice to see some good ... congrats kid
I think I'm going to go clean my room now :)
I've been looking for a reason to do a thorough house cleaning. I have it now. Nice story. Sweet young man to think of his mother when deciding what to do with his loot.
That's lovely! Isn't it grand when fortune smiles?
The young man brought the ticket to the store where he works part time. Did he originally buy the ticket at that same store or is it possible that someone turned in the ticket and was told it was not a winner?
You're calling the kid a thief? Really? You're a jerk. I have a 19 year old and like to think he'd consider me in his plans if he won a sum of money. Some "kids" are good people.
Pinky1234 - congratulations. You win the "first snarky post" award on this one.
Good lord, pinky! You must live a miserable life if all you can do is find something negative in this story. Go eat dirt!
Catgoddess, don't be telling her to eat dirt. Dirt is too good for her. She can go out to the barn and clean out the horse stall for her lunch.
Wow, what a pathetic life you must live Pinky...
Bitter much, Pinky? Can't you just take a feel good story at face value?
That happens all the time. Nobody is honest in this @!$%#ing world.
WoW pinky must be something you would do...guilty conscience or something...pathetic loser!
You arenot saying what I think you're saying without any proof!
Well I certainly don't like to think that could be the case, but stranger things have happened.
catgoddess-She should skip the dirt and go eat a cockroach!! What is wrong with people always looking to find something wrong around every corner??? Why do some peoples minds even go there about people they don't even know???
Why all the negative comments about a valid point? This needs to be investigated... he very well could have stolen a ticket from the valid winner. Let's go to the video tape. And keep your pie holes shut until he is proven to have won it.
It's not a valid point. When did it become that he's guilty of stealing it until it's proven that he didn't? Shouldn't it be the other way around? I used to play the lottery once in a while when I worked in retail, and I would usually bring the tickets back to the store I worked at... because I'd be going there anyway for work. It was convenient.
Just let the kid enjoy his windfall.
Who in the world would ask a clerk if their ticket was the winner? Aren't the lottery results posted for all to see and avoid stuff like this. Has this EVER happened?? If you had a winning match would you take the word of a clerk? GET REAL FOLKS.
Jessie:
You would be surprised how many people just have a stack full of tickets and rather than check them all themselves, they would bring them into the store to have me, or one of the people I worked with, scan them all to see if they're winners. It used to happen all the time when I worked at a grocery store through my teens and college years.
I know with scratch tickets, we could only scan a certain number of losing tickets a day before the machine shut down (I think it was three), but there didn't seem to be a limit on the daily numbers game, or the games like Powerball and things like that. So people would bring their stacks of those tickets in and have us scan them all to see what they won.
This is wonderful! How very nice for this young man! & his family too.
That's the way to win, just forget about it for a while, check them later...Surprise!
Mike in Delray...as we say in New York, "Hey, ya never know..." :-D
Right now my left arm is in a sling, a back problem makes standing difficult, and my left leg was ruined in a motorcycle accident eight years ago. If somebody wants to clean my room, thereight be some good things to find.
Clearly a plot by mothers everywhere to get thier kids to clean their rooms. Seriously, cudos (kudos?) to the kid for taking mom on vacation, and wisely spending the money.
Nice comments, so I won't take you to task too hard on the spelling. Hit the spell check - it's their not thier. But, I guess your name has something to do with your spelling.... LOL
I think rebus is latin. And you aren't too nice to tell him to spellcheck when you can't construct a sentence correctly. I think someone has something to prove or maybe you're trying to feel better about yourself by putting others down.
Come on people!!! Go take a time out if you can't play nice!!!! PIck on spelling, gripe about sentence structure, infer that a kid is a thief etc.. etc..Step back for a sec and look at how that all sounds!!! EWWW!!
I don't see this as a good thing. Think of all the loser for this one winner and odds show he will be broke shortly. The lottery is just a tax on dumb.
Wow, what a loser, Jerry! Not everything is a downer! Smile a little! This is good news!
Jerry might secretly be the governor of Cali. You know, a state where people are probably screaming at this very minute that 'nobody should be allowed to win that much money'.
Jerry, you obviously don't read much.. the European Lottery that he won isn't taxed to death like ours here in the states.. Your just rude..
Jerry cheer up there lil buckaroo. the world isnt so bad. smiles are free!
Personally I never buy a lottery ticket, I buy a fantasy. Nice for this young man his fantasy came true.
Yes the lottery is a regressive tax on the poor. I really don't care about that because many of them don't pay any tax and they should pay something for the services they receive. The poor just cannot figure out how bad the odds of winning are.
I was trying to think of something clever to post but just got an overwhelming urge to clean the house! CYA! ;D
Congrats, Scottish dude!
What a great story.......sounds like a smart, deserving young man - good for him and I hope him and mom have a wonderful holiday.
very cool, hope he gives some to his mom
Awww....what a sweetie taking his mom on a vacation!
Pay off car loan, take mum on holiday, and go to college so he doesn't have to work a dead-end job at Tesco's for life!
Randy 840072- all the world isn't like the U.S.A. It's not all about greed....
boysir
boysir: what kind of name is that? Is that like, not a boy, not yet a "sir"? As far as saying all the world isn't like the U.S.A., it's not all about greed - that's just until your home country of (insert any country here) runs out of money and needs the greedy old USA to bail your sorry butts out!) If this kid wasn't greedy, wouldn't he donate the money to charity instead of blowing $80 grand on a car payment and a vacation?!?! Sounds like greed to me. Half of my family is Scottish. Trust me when I tell you, they are just as greedy as me and my American friends.
Now...that said-happy to hear this story! Sure beats all of the depressing things in the news lately! Congrats!
Now you can pay her to keep your room clean.. LOL
This is pretty funny,I've known kids that couldn't find Ft Knox in their rooms
Sara, I doubt paying off his car and taking Mum on a vacation is going to eat up the entire $80,000. For all we know, he might be donating money to charity or putting himself through college. Even if he does spend it all, what business is it of yours - or anyone else's?
I hate whitewashing. Not everyone in the USA are greedy, and you're just rude, boysir. Boysir, not everyone in the world is rude, only those people in (insert your country here).
Sara sourpuss would make a more accurate user name for you!! Seriously what right do you have to say nasty things about this kid that you don't now nor will you ever know?? How in gods' green earth would you know if he's greedy or not?? Then you gotta slam half your family too?? They may all be basturds but you look worse for slamming them publicly!! Go ask your Dr. for some happy pills. Sounds like you really need them!!!!!!!!!!
all right ryan hope you enjoy your money and have a great year!!
Very cool-Taking mum on holiday. Atta boy.
I wish this young man and his family great happiness. This should be a wake up call to all young people to make sure that they clean their rooms. Hope they have a nice vacation.
You had me at "TEEN CLEANS ROOM..."
Lol!
It's gotten so I have to hold my teen's electronics hostage to get him to follow directions. You see, only after he minds and is respectful can he do anything electronic.
LOL HShaver, I'm a hostage taker myself. But just when I thought I had the game down pat, my daughter decided to clean her room without me holding her laptop for ransom. Go figure.
Lucky kid
