An Italian and a British hostage kidnapped in May in Nigeria were killed on Thursday by their captors during a joint raid by British and Nigerian forces trying to free them, Italy's government said.
British Prime Minister David Cameron called Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti to inform him of the "tragic conclusion" of the operation, a statement said.
The joint forces intervened to free Italian Franco Lamolinara and Briton Christopher McManus, fearing that their lives were under threat, the statement said.
Cameron said it appeared McManus and Lamolinara had been "murdered by their captors before they could be rescued," the BBC reported.
A witness told Reuters that security forces had tried to force their way into a compound in Sokoto, northwest Nigeria.
"The security agencies tried to break into the house but there was resistance. The people inside the house were shooting at them and they returned fire. They exchanged fire for some time," said Mahmoud Abubakar, who lives on the same street.
"I saw a military truck come out of the compound with two bodies on it. I didn't see their color, because they were covered with leaves," he added.
The captors were a faction of militant Islamist sect Boko Haram, a senior official at Nigeria's State Security Service said.
"The hostage-takers shot the hostages before they even entered the compound. All the terrorists have been killed as well," he said. "We arrested some suspects a few days before who led us to them."
British special forces were involved in the rescue, UK media reports said.
McManus’ family said they were devastated by the news.
“We knew Chris was in an extremely dangerous situation,” the family said in a statement published on The Telegraph. “However we knew that everything that could be done was being done. Our thoughts are also of course with the loved ones of Chris’ colleague, Franco Lamolinara, who are also coming to terms with this truly sad news.”
McManus and Lamolinara were working as engineers for a large construction company called Stabilini Visinoni Limited when they were kidnapped on May 12, 2011 in in Birnin Kebbi city, The Telegraph reported.

Kidnappings have become increasingly common in Nigeria in recent years.
Two Britons were held by the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta in September 2008, the newspaper reported. A Scottish oil worker was abducted and his guard killed in April 2009, according to the Telegraph.
Cameron, in a statement published on the Telegraph, said the rescue attempt went forward after authorities “received credible information about their location.”
“A window of opportunity arose to secure their release, " Cameron said. "We also had reason to believe that their lives were under imminent and growing danger."
It was not immediately clear how the two men were killed.
In August a video of the hostages surfaced in the Nigerian capital Abuja with the two men on their knees and blindfolded, with three men wearing turbans and holding guns and ammunition behind them.

I have dealt with these Nigerians before, you have better luck negotiating with a gorrila...there's no more crazier folks on earth than these dimwits....and that ignorant accent with the "dis dat, broda, sisto"...is even more sickening...

When you really need it done right, call the Navy's SEAL Team Six. Of course, this would be reserved for American hostages.
@ttmadison- British SAS (look them up) are some of the best trained special ops guys out there and have carried out spectacular missions. I am not going to get into the whole who is better than whom thing, it is just that this time the good guys did not get breakes they needed to get the inocent out alive. In this type of situation everything has to go right for the good guys to have a sucsesfull mission and ony one thing is needed to make it fail.

50.8% of Nigeria is christian and I think if it was Boko Haram it would say. These terrorist groups have been formed at the village and tribal level. There main goal is to get a share of the oil wealth being raped from their land. So going off and killing hundreds of innocent Muslims to quench your misguided hate is wrong. But going after the Scum Killers is a noble cause. Where is the article does it say Muslims?

He described them as being from Boko Haram, a militant Islamist group that has carried out a number of attacks on police, politicians and clerics who oppose it"- So yes they were muslim militants. Stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason.

BBC report stating they were from Boko Harum? Where in this article or vid? It does mention MEND as a source of kidnappings. So you assumption based on face coverings is a valid point but is it definitive? So do we still go off and kill hundreds of innocent Muslims. Boko Harum is a different matter, yes yes they are scum.

In 2010, US Ally Turkey Attacked the Main Islamic Jihadist Training Camp at the Autonomous Kurdistanis Region. My criticismof the Turkish Military Special Forces Colonel (now a General) that we trained with before coming here (Afghanistan) years ago to conduct US Military Asymmetric Mountain Warfare was that the Turkish Military did not conduct Special Reconnaissance, and found out the hard way (unnecessary deaths) that there were hundreds of thousands of Islamic Jihadists at the Autonomous Kurdistanis Region. So now they are in a full on War, with Airstrikes, Artillery, Armor, Mechanized Infantry, Special Forces, etc..
Being trained in Asymmetric Warfare the Islamic Jihadists fled the Automonous Kurdistanis Region at the start of the Turkish Military Attacks and went back to Egypt as the Muslim Brotherhood, Syria as Al Quada Syria, Yemen as the Al Quada Yemen, Somalia as Al Sheebah, Pakistan as the Pakistanis Taliban and Army of Islam, Palestine as the "Peace Flotillas" of various Islamic Jihadist Organizations plus Hezbollah and Hamas, Gaza as the Army of Islam Gaza, Libya as the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, Southern Iraq as the Al Quada Iraq and Shiites, etc.. Being trained in Asymmetric Warfare (Insurgency) they then got the people to fight for their Cause(s) creating the "Arab Spring" (The Overthrow of US Allies and Strategic gains for Fundamentalist Islamic Iran.).
Note: In Asymmetric Warfare (Insurgency) you NEVER go Force on Force with Conventional Warfare Units. Just like when we were here (Afghanistan) before as the US Military Training Teams attached to SAD/SOG, training the Pro US Afghan Muhajeen to defeat the USSR 40th Army Occupation during Operation Cyclone. Then later on weeks after the 9/11 2001 Attacks back here again to Overthrow the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Government that provided Islamic Sanctuary to Osama Bin Laden and Al Quada and the Islamic Jihadist Training Camps (the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban also massacred the 20,000 to 50,000 Pro US Afghan Muhajeen(our Friends made in Combat) as well as their Families, Relatives, In Laws, Friends, etc.)*. Then once again, after US Congress Declared War withIraq in 2002, we lived with the Kurdistanis to gain their trust, organize them to fight the Iraqis Military, seize and secure the Iraqis Northern Oil Fields, destroy the Iraqis C4I, terminate a ally of Al Quada, strategic operational feint to make the Iraqis Military Command believe the US Military Liberation of Iraq would come thruUS Ally Turkey, etc. during 2002 to 2003 Operation Hotel California. All of these are successful examples of US Military Asymmetric Warfare (Insurgency), covert small unit tactics, accomplishing strategic Asymmetric Warfare Goals.
*After all the previous US Military Defense Budget Cuts, just one Branches (US Army, USAF, USMC, USN, etc.) US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces cannot accomplish a Mission so most are Joint Operations consisting of US Army Special Forces, USAF Special Operations, USMC MARSOC, USN SEALs). During the Mission to Afghanistan weeks after the 9/11 2001 Attacks Joint Teams allied themselves with the Northern Alliance (that hated the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban). From our previous knowledge from Operation Cyclone we were the Teams that went into the Afghan Cities to disrupt the Fundamentalist Taliban Government and engage the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Militias. A failed US Military Asymmetric Warfare example is under H.R.4655 "Iraqis Liberation Act of 1998" Justification Weapons of Mass Destruction, the thousands of Shiite assassins and insurgents that we trained failed to Overthrow President Hussein and the Iraqis Government. With almost all of them getting turned in (by each other for rewards), captured, tried and executed as Traitors. With President Clinton spining our failure to "Dictator Massacring His Own People". And then starting US Military Operation Desert Fox with us still at Iraq, this time conducting Target Damage Assessments just outside of Baghdad.

According to US Law (President Obama's January 21, 2009 Patriot Acts, section of "Material Support To Terrorist Organizations") they are Felony Criminals by even giving them any support (especially Funds, Medical Supplies, Humanitarian Assistance, Food, "Expert Advise" especially Legal, etc.).
By the way the minority 1.8 Million Islamic Believers at the US do NOT determine what Islam is or is not for the rest of the 1.5 Billion Islamic Believers Worldwide. And before you say "Radical", "Extremists", etc. realize the most important things: Sunnis "Pro Western", "Pro Modern", etc. and Shia (Shiites, Shia derivative becomes Sharia) Fundamentalist Islam as to why the Sunnis and Shia continue to kill each other for centuries. Having played alongside the SBS (the British version of the US Navy SEALS, with whom I also got to play - no, I was not a SEAL, I was what is now, I believe, called a "SWCC", which are kinda like "Robin" to the SEALS' "Batman", tho', back then, we were just "the boat guys"), I'd say I'd happily put my fate (indeed, have put my fate) in the hands of the British Special Forces, either SBS or SAS. The Israelis have nothing on those guys.
I do, however, agree, that OPSEC was probably compromised by one of the Nigerians participating. He was probably on his cellphone to his kidnapper buddies within seconds after the SAS guys got underway.
Bottomline, it has gotten so bad in Nigeria that, wherever possible, the oil companies are moving all staff and facilities offshore, where they can be protected. The whole place is absolutely lawless. One of the most common tragedies there (besides the periodic massacre of Christians by Islamic militants) is entire villages worth of folks getting blown up because they were poking holes in pipelines to tap the gas for home use. Always some idiot in the crowd who lights up a cigarette.
We need to develop our domestic energy resources simply so that we do not have to deal with people like this - or the Saudis, or the Mexicans, or the Venezuelans, or any of the other nutjobs who just happen to be sitting on oil. The Chinese want the oil? Let them provide the security. I'm sure that they will be more effective because they will be willing to be totally ruthless, something the West is no longer capable of being.
I agree with oldefarte's interpretation of the situation. Looks like the whole thing was one big goatfcuk, and there are just too few people to trust especially in that part of the world. I am wondering why the tangos were taken into custody rather than quickly dispatched upon discovering the bodies of the hostages. This was obviously an unannounced mission (well, it was supposed to be), and sas/seals/israelis would not have left them alive just to be nice. May just be another example of the inherent clusterfcuk that is the chain of command and intel leaks that run rampant. Personally I wish they had saved everyone some trouble and taken out all of them for the two they took.

Don't denegrate yourself, by being what is now called a SWCC, aka Boat Operator, YOU ARE/WERE trained as a USN SEAL; just like the UDT Boat Operators (your arse in the water to get the mission done, if all the UDTs (now known as BUD/S) are dead). I was busting out laughing when a friend of mine volunteered to be a SWCC "Swig", he did not know what he was getting into. He asked for my Letter of Recommendation which he did not get because he refused for me to conduct an off the books assessment of him. I told him how to prep for the course(s) based on the little I knew about the Swig course(s).

Best solution: carpet bomb the site where the terrorists are. After the people get the idea that terrorists in any area are going to get the rest of the population killed, the people will start telling the terrorists to move out.
Second best solution: let the "peace loving muslims" know that the next time something like this happens, the repay rate will be 100 to one. Preferably, settle accounts in terms of a big kaboom at Mecca during Ramadan. The muslims are great about bombing people at worship, should understand all about it. Of course, the "peace loving muslims" will make sure that the radicals quit their activity....right after Mecca is in flames.

And I told you before, it is US Navy SEALs (SEa Air Land) as an Acronym, and not Seals as the animals that get eaten by Killer Whales.
This failure is now a blackeye for Prime Minister David Cameron, the British Government and the British SAS(more than likely the Relief of a SAS Team Commander as a Politically Expedient Scapegoat). This is exactly why the US MUST NOT get involved with these Rescue Recapture Recovery ("Triple R") Military Operations unless they concern US Citizens.
This is why President Obama during the Rescue of Captain Phillips Politically Distanced himself to save his Political Career and the Office of the President of the United States, just in case of failure;as all the blame would have been on the Commanding Officer of the USS Bainbridge as the On Scene Commander, as well as on the USN SEAL Team Commander. After being asked for Presidential Authority to terminate the Somalis Pirates, President Obama froze up, as the window of opportunity was slamming shut; so the On Scene Commander and the USN SEAL Team Commander used "Imminent Danger" to bypass President Obama and they ordered the USN SEAL Team Snipers (M-110s) to terminate the Somalis Pirates. If this would have Failed, the On Scene Commander and the USN SEAL Team Commander would be life time members of the nearest Federal Penitentiary for "Exceeding Authority" Resulting in a Death.
