Dominique Strauss-Kahn bundled away from Cambridge University protesters

LONDON -- Former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was bundled into the back of a police car to escape protesters after a speaking engagement at Britain's Cambridge University on Friday that angered women's rights activists.

About 150 demonstrators, waving banners and chanting "2, 4, 6, 8, no more violence, no more rape" had circled the Cambridge Union Society where Strauss-Kahn delivered a speech on globalization and the Eurozone to a select group of students.

As the French economist left, the angry crowd, shouting references to New York hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo who accused him of sexual assault, tried to scale barricades guarded by police and security officers set up to protect him.

Placards were thrown at the car and protesters scuffled with officers as he was whisked away.

"I don't think he should have been invited here to speak to students," student Morgan Wild, 23, told Reuters. "I think it's part of a crass PR campaign to rehabilitate his reputation and we shouldn't be taken for fools."

Strauss-Kahn calls sexual encounter with maid a 'moral failing'

"It's got nothing to do with freedom of speech," said student Francesca Williams, 21. "They're inviting a man who hates women. I don't think DSK should be given the privilege of speaking in front of a private audience."

Cambridgeshire Police said a 19-year-old man was arrested for assaulting a police officer and a woman, 22, was detained for a breach of the peace. Two others were arrested on Friday morning after banners were plastered all over the Union Society building.

The Cambridge News website displayed photos showing its walls defaced with messages including "DSK GO AWAY" and "WOMEN DESERVE BETTER."

'Flabbergasted'
There was tight security inside the venue with the gray-haired Strauss-Kahn flanked by four burly men during his speech and 25 guards brought in for the occasion.

But even within the historic 19th century building, where politicians such as British wartime leader Winston Churchill have addressed students, he was unable to escape controversy.

One student asked him to explain vaginal bruising suffered by Nafissatou Diallo, the maid behind the sexual assault allegations who is now pursuing civil claims against Strauss-Kahn in New York.

"The reality is that I spent a week in prison. There hasn't been a prosecution," he replied to a rapt audience listening over the faint shouts and sirens heard from outside.

Diallo's lawyer, Douglas Wigdor, spoke to about 100 Cambridge students and journalists on her behalf at a rival event earlier Friday.

According to the Guardian newspaper, Wigdor said he was "flabbergasted" at the invitation. He called it "an affront to all victims of sexual crimes."

"The history of Cambridge and the history of the union are now interspersed with Strauss-Kahn. I don't blame Strauss-Kahn. I blame the union," he said.

A statement posted Friday on the Cambridge union's website said the invitation was made well before Strauss-Kahn's controversial departure from the IMF. His experience in French politics mean that he was "exceptionally well qualified" to speak on the financial crisis and the French presidential election, it said.

Some of those attending the speech, many of them economics or politics students, agreed. They said they wanted to hear about Strauss-Kahn's experiences in the IMF and politics, not his personal life.

"This is a forum for free speech," said politics student Milad Matin, 21. "It's not a value judgement. I'm not endorsing rape by watching him speak."

Strauss-Kahn held in French prostitution probe

Strauss-Kahn has mostly kept a low profile since New York prosecutors dismissed charges of attempted rape and sexual assault against him in August, based on concerns about Diallo's credibility. But in recent months he has rejoined the international speech circuit.

Though the criminal case is over, the first civil court hearing over Diallo's claims is scheduled for March 28.

Video surveillance footage from the New York City hotel where former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was accused of sexually assaulting a maid is raising new questions in the case. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.

Strauss-Kahn was also held for two days in January in a police station in the northern French city of Lille, where investigators questioned him about allegations that a prostitution ring organized by his business acquaintances provided women for clients of Lille's Carlton Hotel.

Police want to establish whether Strauss-Kahn knew that women at parties he attended in Lille, Paris and Washington were prostitutes. His lawyer has said Strauss-Kahn had no reason to think so.

...delivered a speech on globalization and the Eurozone to a select group of students.

Now he is milking the speech circuit. Central governments and central banks will be our downfall. Centralizing way too much power into the hands of way too few. Corruption is guaranteed. Fiat money is like catching a falling knife, inflation does not allow stability in value, low interest rates are good only for the ubber rich, money volume is a mere toy for supply and demand. The centrals control it all.

A statement posted Friday on the Cambridge union's website said the invitation was made well before Strauss-Kahn's controversial departure from the IMF.

What a lame excuse, they could easily have withdrawn the invitation after the allegations came to light. With the numerous allegations against him, the university should have withdrawn the invitation. It was an affront to every female student at the university to allow him to speak. If it had just been the one accusation, I could understand them allowing him to still come and speak, but there have been far too many other women from multiple countries and backgrounds accusing him of various forms of assault and intimidation for there to be no truth to any of it. This guy is a sexual predator who has used his power and position to get away with raping women or otherwise pressuring them into having sex with him by threatening their careers if they did not comply. I see these threats as no different from rape since it was still a means of forcing these women to have sex with him against their will, even if the force used was not physical. This guy belongs in prison, not speaking at a prestigious university.

What do you expect in the land of the land of the liberals? I have to wonder if these women are the ones who are backing Obama for his claims of opposition to his attack on religious freedom being a "war on Women"? If they thought this was an attempt to reabilitate Straus-Kahn's reputation what do they think this BS of the claim Republicans are waging a war on women is staged to hide or rehabilitate? Parallels there I see.

These DSKs assume that with money power and hats of top politicians, they can get away with all criminal acts.

What sort of economists these DSKs are?

Some nations put taxpayers monies in these IMF, WB and these people invest them in some dirty swamps at high interest rates. Those nations taking loans ended up as basket case nations like the basket case economists like DSKs.

They abuse each and every thing they do including the employees working under them!

Cambridge or any other honorable place should not invite these sexual maniacs to lecture.

One, I think if churches want to be insurance companies, then they have to follow the same rules. However, I understand that some churches don't encourage contraception. So tell me this, which church, just name one, has ever been forced by the Obama administration to pay for contraception. When you name me just one church that has been forced to do something that it didn't want to do, or pay for something that it didn't want to pay for, then we can have a discussion about an attack on religious freedom. Idiot.

I was a college student several times and often wondered why these people were invited and paid to tell their experiences.

A lot of people in the case of Straus-Kahan relate in a curious way to his exploits. I imagine the guy tilittes and relates a very tiny bit of his disgusting endeavours - disgusting as they are.

I would not wast time going to his lectures.

This is a classic example of these morons (and many posters) and their extremely selective and distorted memories. A question about a bruise but complete ignorance about the other facts of the case, and especially the actions of the maid that led to a complete dismissal of all charges.

Notice that Mr. Geithner is hush hush when asked about the sexual exploits of the IMF staff ?

Meanwhile, the IMF is continuing to "ask" participants to increase their "donations" into the IMF coffers for more EuroPIIgs bailouts.

Hey, party time once the coffers are full again.

Apparently you didn't follow the case. If you did, you would have known this maid is a con artist who attempted this sort of thing before, and let's not forget her large sum money exchanges for illegals. She is a con artist who was caught and she is fortunate she wasn't prosecuted.

He is not the kind of person schools should be bringing in to speak. The maid in N.Y. is not the only woman to have filed a complaint against him. The sad reality is only about 10% of rapes are believed to be reported. Yes, some of those are filed by ignorant and/or vengeful women, but that does not negate the pain and suffering of real rape victims.

The fact is that people who go to college are more successful in life because they are more educated. Shaky, I strongly object to Santorum's efforts to discourage higher education, and to his pretense that his heavy-handed interpretation of religion is the true way -- even to the exclusion of the teachings of his own church. I object to the efforts of any and all politicians to dumb down America. This article presented a demonstration of how students at one of the world's leading universities took the initiative to push back against the wrong they see in this speaker. In the world sought by Mr. Santorum, no one would push back, or be allowed to think they could. These politicians of both parties are simply wrong for wrapping themselves in vote-getting religio-babble. You are completely unaware of my religious beliefs, my political affiliations and my support or non-support for the incumbent Why do you pretend otherwise? Please note that I supported your comment/question above regarding who ended the war. None of Lincoln, Reagan, T. Roosevelt or even GHW Bush (whose veep became a prototype for the "leaders" to follow) would approve of what has become of their former party. I strongly believe in the separation of church and state, and do not embrace the takeover of America by the insider trading politicians, Democrats and Republicans, in Washington, all of whom were quite cozy with DSK until his episode in New York, ultimately mishandled by the prosecutor..

People who are capable of committing atrocities against other humans shouldn't be rewarded because they have some expertise in one area. Unfortunately, when that expertise has to do with making money, they can be as evil as they like and still have the respect of others who think the offender can make money for them.

How about the people that (rightly) condemn Rush Limbaugh for calling Sandra Fluke a slut, but refuse (wrongly) to condemn Bill Maher for calling Sarah Palin a c_nt. And, before you start flaming me, PLEASE note that I offer this only as an example, not as a political comment or a political position.

I hate it when people like denver bill 2 say:

How about the people that (rightly) condemn Rush Limbaugh for calling Sandra Fluke a slut, but refuse (wrongly) to condemn Bill Maher for calling Sarah Palin a c_nt. I acknowledge your last sentence, so this isn't directed at you personally. When Bill Maher insults someone, that person is usually a person in the public sphere, and who is subject to be scrutinized. He makes fun of leaders and people who are politicians in washington. I am sure if Limbaugh were to call Hilary Clinton, or Nancy Pelosi an old hooker slut whore, there would not have been such a huge deal made.(I don't listen to his show, but I wouldn't be surprised If he has called them this before.). The thing is, he assailed a normal person, who just briefly stepped in to a public arena to give her opinion on a public matter. She has every right to do so, and she is no politician. That's why people are mad. Because you can't just call her terrible names for giving her opinion as a citizen, when she has every right to do so, and she is not doing it for political reaons. Also, I hate it when people say leave rush alone, He's exercising his free speech. I just tell myself, well by that same token, don't we have the right to use our own free speech to condemn these terrible things. The constitution gurantees that he can say these terrible things without like going to jail. I also guarantees that we can use our own free speech to condemn his words. Also, from what I understand, her testimony wasn't even about giving contraception for recreational purposes. She was telling them how her friend got ovarian cists and how it could have been prevented if the school didn't ban contraception coverage, and made it to expensive for her friend, a college student, to afford. How does that make some one a slut. Only in the wacky world of Rush Limbaugh.

The accuser was caught in a web of her own lies. Too many people want to believe the false accusation so much that they conveniently forget that part.

I see the socialist democrats are making their own law/facts again. Let's see...not enough evidence to charge him...she appears to be linked to prostitution and the socialist disregard evidence and make their own law and there own version of facts. It sounds like the old days of Joe Stalin all over again. The Office of Disinformation at it again with the help of the USA media.

As far has higher education goes...its a nest of socialist vipers always influencing our youth. Most of the professors are old draft dodgers from the war in Nam, bra burners that influence the youth of America with their communist bull@!$%#. We need another Joe McCarthy!

The reality, whether you open your eyes to it or not, is that his accuser proved to be a serial liar, leaving the prosecution with no choice but to drop the case. I don't like false accusations no matter whom they are directed at. I don't waive my moral principles just because the victim is someone I don't like politically.

A little money, power, being innocent, and the fact that his accuser was lying in a manner that the physical evidence discredited her. Of course, those last two might not have helped without the first two.

i think the obvious problem here is that we tend to ignore reality when emotion is high. The DSK case was about the burden of proof. It is very hard to prosecute or defend any position in a modern court of law in the absence of viable proof and an accordant chain of evidence and events. There was several obvious and discrediting missteps by the victim, DSK, the prosecution, and the defense. When it comes to sexual encounters I think it inappropriate to assume every woman is a victim and every man a brute. Distant and near history teaches us that there is equal opportunity for exploitation when it comes to sex and sexual encounters.

                                          You marry a man, decide you don't want him any longer, then take everything he's worked for all his life;

                                          The family court system, biased toward women, takes away custody of his children; You cry rape or sexual harassment and the man is held automatically to be in the wrong;

So what's wrong with hating women?

Statistics prove that divorce affects women NEGATIVELY. In other words, they lose financially!

You are focused on celebrities and a few cases of savvy middle class women. Race and class also affect this with black married women being the most likely to fall into financial disaster after a divorce- despite usually being an equal or primary bread winner in the family. Dependance on TWO incomes - even if the 2nd is minimal or spotty- makes divorce a big financial hit.

You are living in a fantasy land where jews run the government and women control the courts and BOTH take all your money! Its obsessive and paranoid.

We do a great disservice to education and intellectual growth if we focus only on those things "moral, just, and right". We do not live in that fantasy world. Morality is an personal and inherited trait- thus, "individual" morality cannot be applied to the masses. Nonetheless, there is a basic and inherent since of justice and rights in the human collective. There are no rules however that limit the perversion of the morality, justice or rights in any society; only laws that attempt to limit or respond to the effects of such perversions.

So far they can't win in a court of law and now they take it into the court of public opinion! Well the victim whomever it may be; will have the chance to expel their case in court and with it being a civil case, a lot more evidence will be allowed. Then those armchair trial lawyers will have their chance to see if they were right.

The left will scratch, claw and whine to get someone to see their point of view, even if it is wrong.

                                              3. The maid did not tell multiple stories. She told ONE. It didn't change. Strauss's did. From I didn't touch her- to she had consentual sex with me FOR FREE (so no solicitiing prostitution charges for him)- to she was a prostitute.

First she didn't leave the room at all. (keycard evidence) Oh yeah, she went about her job as though nothing had happened. (keycard evidence) Oh yeah, what really, really happened...

Now, I will admit that I didn't memorize all of her stories. I just remember that there were about 4 or 5. The only part that she didn't change was something that 1) couldn't be directly disproven and 2) sounded like something she rehearsed in advance. Perhaps when you say she only had one story you are only focusing on the rehearsed and uncheckable part.

Ironicly, your assertion of Strauss-Khan's story changes don't really help you much. They are precisely the sequence of stories that one would expect if he had hired a prostitute. After all, people don't exactly come clean about that one right away either.

OMG! You completely made that up!

You don't remember all her stories, but you know there were 4 or 5? What a load!! So you are making sh*t up that you don't have to prove or explain because you can't remember it? There was ONE story.

Keycard evidence? Please link the story you got this keycard evidence from.

The hotel floor manager entered the room first and said that there was no one in the room. This was not a suprise since Strauss had checked out of the high end suite. So floor manager gave the ok for the cleaner to start working. MAid and floor manager said the manager had left the door to the large suite OPEN- so whose key card? It is customary to leave the door open when the maids are working.

Strauss was in a bathroom in the large suite and surprised the maid. After the alleged assualt, the maid immediately ran into the hallway. That was when a doorman or cabbie said Strauss left in a hurry and without his phone! Strauss was caught quickly by using the phone he left behind.

What keycards? You pulled that out your *ss!

                                                Here's an excerpt:

The Daily Beast has learned that, until last week, investigators didn't seek electronic keycard evidence for rooms the alleged victim cleaned at the hotel the day of the alleged attack, other than Strauss-Kahn's. That omission has taken on new significance as the maid’s account changed.

The maid originally alleged that on May 14, Strauss-Kahn, one of the world’s most powerful men as a leading candidate for president of France and then-director of the International Monetary Fund, exited a shower in his luxury suite at the Sofitel hotel in New York City, grabbed her from behind and sexually assaulted her after she entered to clean his suite.

Bolstered by significant forensic evidence that included Strauss-Kahn's DNA, prosecutors in the Manhattan district attorney's office secured an indictment just days after the attack. But in recent weeks, their case began to unravel as investigators dug deeper into how the maid immigrated to the United States under a political asylum claim that included some false information.

High-powered lawyers for Strauss-Kahn had by then already combed New York's African immigrant world, uncovering their own evidence challenging the alleged victim's credibility.

As prosecutors’ doubts mounted, the DA’s office last week disclosed to defense lawyers that they believed there were problems with the victim's testimony and agreed to loosen the terms of Strauss-Kahn's bail.

Meanwhile, as questions surfaced about her background, the alleged victim began to change her story.

After weeks of offering a consistent narrative about exactly what she had done after fleeing Strauss-Kahn's room on May 14, she suddenly made some changes to that account, the sources said.

The maid had told her hotel superiors, hotel security, police detectives, prosecutors and the grand jury that, after Strauss-Kahn forced her to have oral sex, she managed to flee his room and hide around the corner where a housekeeping supervisor found her after Strauss-Kahn had left the hotel. But according to a letter prosecutors placed in the court file Friday she stated that, after the attack and before the housekeeper found her, she went and cleaned another room.

As for "what keycards:" Why the electronic keycards that recorded who entered any given room and when. She didn't expect to be called on that. The original msnbc articles went info better detail about the separate stories and I confess that I incorrectly remembered the original one as staying in the room rather than hiding down the hall. But it still changed, because (please take your fingers out of your ears) there was keycard evidence that showed she continued to enter other rooms.

Keycard evidence? Please link the story you got this keycard evidence from.

I have to wonder if you are relying on the fact that Newsvine will delete any direct links I might try to insert.

Struss, is a con...Con artist that is. Power and money has allowed him to get away with his sexual exploits for years. With the media's help he's been able time and time again to reinvent his reputation.
