American killed in Yemen; al-Qaida linked group claims responsibility

The American teacher killed in Taiz, Yemen, on Sunday reportedly was shot while riding in this vehicle.

Updated at 3:25 p.m. ET: An American working in Yemen was shot and killed in the city of Taiz on Sunday, and a group tied to al-Qaida said it had executed the man because of his "Christian proselytizing."

"We can confirm that a U.S. citizen was tragically killed in Yemen," a State Department spokesman told NBC News. "We condemn this heinous crime in the strongest terms and express our deepest condolences to his family and friends."

The U.S. would not name the victim, citing his family's privacy, and conflicting reports surfaced about his identity. Some sources identified him as a Joel Shrun, or Sharm, and others as Joel Wesley.

He was in a vehicle when it was fired on by someone on a motorcycle.

A group linked to al-Qaida claimed responsibility. "This operation comes as a response to the campaign of Christian proselytizing that the West has launched against Muslims," an unidentified person said in a text message to journalists, claiming responsibility on behalf of the Ansar al-Sharia (Partisans of Islamic Law).


Taiz was a hotbed of opposition during earlier protests that forced Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down as president.

Al-Qaida has taken advantage of the security vacuum and is in control of two cities in the south, having staged attacks on the Yemeni police and military, the latest killing more than 150 soldiers.

The attacks underscore the challenges facing President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi who took office last month after a year of massive protests against Saleh.

Taiz, about 120 miles south of the capital Sanaa, is a commercial hub where many foreigners live and work.

Also on Sunday, a government warplane bombed Islamist militants in the southern city of Jaar, causing people to flee their homes, residents said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Ansar al-Sharia captured Jaar in Abyan Province in March last year after the outbreak of protests against Saleh and have turned it into their main base in southern Yemen.

Daily clashes break out around areas controlled by militants in southern Yemen. A local official said that up to 14 militants were killed in artillery attacks and clashes on Saturday north of the Abyan provincial capital of Zinjibar, the area of Bagdar and the town of Jaar.

The United States and Saudi Arabia, Yemen's neighbor and the world's biggest oil exporter, are concerned about al-Qaida's expansion in Yemen where it has regrouped after suffering reverses in Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

In early March, militants killed more than 110 soldiers in twin suicide attacks and said they had also captured some 70 soldiers.

The article only states 'gunman' but I'm pretty sure he was part of Al-Qaida. So they were able to kill an American. Let's see if the White House makes a statement on this. Al-Qaida are slowly working on controlling Yemen the same way they slowly controlled Afghanistan.

Al-Qaida knows that the US has taken its eyes off of them just like in the 1990's.

One of my students is from Yemen and the country has been in turmoil for some time. The American-backed dictator who was recently over-thrown had a very corrupt regime based upon cronyism which of course benefitted the elite at the expense of everyone else. Now that he's out, there's a struggle between various factions who refuse to cooperate with one another (we have that right here in Congress and just about every state legislature so don't get snide about it). Al-Qaeda is taking advantage of that fact and using it to undermine Yemeni authorities. Believe me, most Yemenis despise Al-Qaeda and view them as criminals and subversives.

Mr Shrun was not "spreading Christianity". THAT'S the excuse Al-Qaeda used but according to my student, the Western teachers and aid workers in Yemen don't proselytize. And the Yemenis don't see them as enemies - in fact they are usually very warmly welcomed and appreciated. So please don't blame the Yemeni people for the actions of Al-Qaeda criminals.

And as for the "Stone Age" reference, if you've never been to Yemen, you have absolutely NO right to judge it or its people. The Yemenis I know are very good people, very open and kind, respectful, and family-oriented. They like America but don't want our problems. They want good schools, modern clinics and hospitals, reliable utilities and good roads, and a decent life for themselves and their children. They do NOT want the self-centered, materialistic hedonism that they see as pervading American culture to corrupt theirs. As intelligent human beings and citizens of a sovreign nation they have the right to decide what "modern" things they want and which ones they don't.

And yes, we need to keep our noses out of Yemen's business. The US has every right to ask that the perpetrators of this crime be found and brought to justice, but no more than that.

Libyan 'freedom' profited Al Quaeda greatly, as has most of the "Arab Spring" since they are the ones pushing to overthrow dictators who, while brutal, did keep the radical extremists in check. Now, dictators gone, radical extremists on upswing, better armed and able to take over more regions. Not that the folks singing the praises of the Arab Springtime are going to admit anytime soon that what that will create is a rather large Islamic Caliphate. Those folks don't want democracy, they want strict Sharia law. Perfect example is the reason behind murdering this teacher. Don't want any Christian Proselytising on our turf. I hate to say this, but if this guy really was some Christian going around proselytizing in Yemen, then he brought this on himself. I do not like to see Americans killed like this anywhere, but to go around preaching Christianity in an unstable Muslim country with a major al Qaeda presence is just plain stupid. Most of this would stop if we would make drilling for oil in national lands a condition of national security. With this label we would stop the tree huggers from flying their corporate jets to D.C. to protest and stop all drilling while the average Joe is the one who suffers at the pump.

We need to drill to the point of being totally self sufficient, then start selling surplus and take that money and put some serious cash into alternative energy research.

This way we do not need to deal with our friends that stab us in the back (Saudi Arabia first and all the Muslim lands can follow). We apologize to these people, but never have I heard of word of support or remorse from them for the atrocities committed by their radical people of faith that are sponsored with state funding). We have turned on Israel (the only nation there that did not have it's citizens in the streets dancing on 9/11 and whisper sweet things to our enemies. We have a administration that has the worst foreign relations I have ever seen. A president that has yet to fulfill his promises when he lied to get our votes, and now instead of taking any heat he has done what he always does, blames others and gets people to call them racist. It is time to take a stand for the sake of our nation and get these pack of idiots who do not have a clue out of the white house, put term limits on our representatives in D.C. and bring back the citizen politicians our forefathers envisioned.

Sorry TB, but drilling won't stop the problem. It'll bring down the price of gas maybe twenty cents over the course of the next fifteen years. MAYBE. It certainly won't make us self-sufficient, since all oil goes onto the global market.

Christians control all three branches of government, dominate the entire command and control structure of the world's most powerful military, have a near monopoly over the U.S. economy, and exercise a voter majority so large that they can, and regularly do, violate the constitutional rights of others.       I love the mind of the liberal thinker. You not only follow this president but also the news that blindly supports him and his socialist agenda. You talk like we do not have any oil reserves in America, but the truth be told if there was a stop of government regulations forcing the refineries to make different grades or mixes of gas for each region we most likely would drop the price of gas by $1.00 a gallon (but contrary to what the liberals tell you, they want to keep the middle class under their thumbs so it is not in their interest to allow the middle and lower class to rise up and free themselves from government help, it takes away from their voter base.

      Next I would suggest you quite listening to all news, they are not news reporting anymore, just mouthpieces for whatever political view they support. Use this wonderful tool that has been given to us and look into the US geographical reports of oil deposits found under both Alaska and under the mainland U.S. and outside under the water. We have more oil then Canada, Russia, the whole Arab peninsula combined. This being tapped would stop us from having our economy at the mercies of the Muslims that are friends one could do without.

      Now in regards to your thinking that this is not a christian nation and we are having problems because the Christians are losing power, I would suggest you look to the writings of our founders and see what they have to say.

      I could go on and on but like it or not this country was built on christian principles, but the founders in their wisdom did not want the church to rule the country because everything becomes corrupt with power, but was to be used as another tool for keeping checks on this government. So are the Christians attacked, of course they are. I watch for news daily and I do not see the attacks against any other faith like I see it against Christians. But you know what the difference is.       She was called into the senate ethics committee to speak about how religious institutes will be effected by Obama care, when her credentials were questioned she took to the airwaves. There was nothing inocent about this, this was a calculated move by Obama and his supporters because he knew that Obama care would pass the freedom of religion act and get past the catholic schools, so rather then admit he was wrong he and his supporters did a run around and put her in the front as if her reproductive rights were effected, when in reality her right to have sex was never effected, it is just not felt by most Americans that we should have to pay for such activity, this is a matter of choice and as in drinking you have choices but I should not have to pay for them. And if my faith prohibits me from doing this, then to join my school with the pre-knowledge of my beliefs and then become a activist to try to force my beliefs away and yours upon me is wrong. If she felt so strongly about this then maybe she should have went to a secular school and not a religious school. Do some research as I have and you will see this was set up from day one!

This separation was set up because the baptist of the south wanted a state founded religion and the federalist did not. Iraq is already in talks with iran, both are shiite majority now. under saddam the sunnis were in charge. the rest of the middle east is majority sunni, unfortunately small and not able to fight off iran if it comes to war.

          So with the US going downhill fast, if iran takes over the coupe de grace will be cutting off all oil from the middle east. We will end up like norway buying and selling stuff and minding our own business.

Their lethal hate comes back on them, and ironically, it wouldn't surprise me that it will be their own people of whom will stop the violence, else they know they and their innocent families will be next as their numbers dwindle, because even their own people get tired of war and death, and want it to end.

                      But for American that want to spread the seeds of peaceful ventures and build more understanding between different people and different cultures, staying at home doesn't start this. You have to take a risk and go THERE. If teachers didn't take risks, then how would knowledge be transmitted and learned in the new worlds? I'm sure that their own people want to one day, enjoy for themselves by reaping the rewards of their own hard work, to learn how build things and create stable, peaceful economies to help their own people, and enjoy the same things we take for granted in our great country that we've built up over the centuries.

                      Civilizations, its infrastructure, social progress, and years of friendships weren't built in a day, and they won't be stopped in a day, either. If one death deterred us then no one would have the courage to risk crossing any street to get to the other side. But thank goodness we do, and we do it often. Otherwise, we'd be stuck where we are, getting nowhere. You have to take a risk and go THERE.

The only thing is, how long is it going to take the ignorant hateful ones like al Qaeda and the ilk, which seem to be the militant arm of Islam, to realize this? It took Christianity quite awhile to mature. It just seems that there is a part of their ideology that will never totally accept peace. Their holy book tells them to kill the infidels, and the definition of infidel seems to be rather broad. I don't see it for quite some time. Maybe a century or two.

                      As far as Yemen is concerned, there's no there there. Whatever simulacrum of civilization they may have had in the past has evaporated like the morning dew in the August sun. So no, I don't think going there at this time has any benefit that outweighs the risk of being murdered by one of their many, many extremists. That is not really so much a risk, as a plan for suicide.

                      There are other, even worse countries in the world, filled to overflowing with raging political and/or religious extremists of every stripe, and to grace these vermin with our presence in the hope of achieving understanding will surely invite violence, resentment, and little else. If you wish to go "there", by all means, do so. Just don't expect sympathy from others who naturally have a better instinct for self-preservation. There are many lovely countries to visit, as well as our own, and most people are not of a missionary mindset, with a fondness for martyrdom. So let us know how your trip works out.

                              Well, that stinks. A teacher? What subject did he/she teach? Was he/she involved in anything "illegal" in that country? Did this person offend someone?                                         I am surprised and somewhat appalled at how no one offered any sort of condolance to the victim's family.

                                        I wish to extend my deepest remorse to the family and close friends of the Sweedish teacher. Only God can decide the fate of his afterlife, but as a fellow human, I pray with all my heart that God has mercy on his family and loved ones, and give them the patience they need in this critical moment. I also hope he made good decisions in life, so that God may reward him graciously.

                                        One commenter above me, named GurKal, said "Calm down people, that is only one death". How disgusting. I refuse to calm down! As a Muslim who has memorized the Holy Quran completely by heart, I resent the killing of this innocent Sweedish dude. No where does God command the killing innocent people, be that "infidel" (which is a mistranslation, really it's "farmer" ie someone who hides the seed of truth under a pile of dirt) or non-infidel. So this man's death is like the death of my own cousin! Which brings me to the next point:

                                        To the next point: Leeroy Brown (the guy who commented right above me) is right. We don't know the circumstances, and the most pathetic part of this all is that the news was "received was in the form of a text message". Who knows? Maybe the Sweedish guy could have been involved in murde...but let's not get into that. He passed away, and all we can do is prevent similar incidents from happening.

                                        Third point:

                                        To the keyboard "Jihadi"s, my fellow self-ritious "Muslims", my arrogent misguided bishes; also to my war-loving, Israel-worshipping, extremeright Rick "Republicans",

                                        Tell me, if some random country, let's say Luxemburg, invades France and bruttally tortures the innocent people there, would you honestly go and save the innocent people. I doubt it! Saving those people would be true jihad, but you wouldn't! Because (a) you so-called "jihadi"s don't really follow Prophet Muhammad's Islam and (b) you God-damn extreme-right "Republicans" would not bother cuz there's not corporate benefit and there's no oil in France.

                                        Hypocrites! Not a single Muslim hater here offered condolence to the poor Sweedish man! Not a single "infidel"-hater offered an explaination to this behavior! Most probably remprimand the murderer for killing an innocent man (if the Swedish dude was innocent) just as he expressed disapproval and reprimanded his companion Abdullah Bin Jahsh for killing an enemy during the time the Arabs regarded as sacred months. He would propably commanded his companions/follows not to talk trash about the Swedish man in front of his relatives, just as he told his companions not to talk trash about his worst opponent (Abu Jahl) in front of the latter's son, Ikrimah. Killing what infidels? In what context was the verse you quoted revealed? What are the verses (sentences) before and after saying.
