Egypt votes to pay $16,600 to those wounded during Arab Spring

Egypt's new parliament voted Monday to compensate protesters who were seriously injured during the Arab Spring uprising, Reuters reported. Each victim will receive $16,600 as part of the parliament's overall push to pay damages to victims.

Forces loyal to former president Hosni Mubarak killed around 850 people and injured thousands, according to Reuters. Mubarak was dramatically ousted after 18 days of protest in February 2011; he is currently on trial, accused of ordering the shooting of protesters, corruption and abuse.

The law may go forth only with the approval of Egypt’s ruling generals, who assumed power after Mubarak’s fall. Egypt’s parliament started working in January, the first democratically elected representatives in 60 years, according to the Guardian. The army has promised to hand over power to an elected civilian president by the end of June.

That is very kind, a friendly gesture from their intern government. Hope that the Egyptians have patience with their own government.

In U.S.A. there were Occupy Movement and there had wounded; our government has not paid them but filed charges against them.

Yes, well, we didn't deploy troops to SHOOT at them, so the situation is a bit different.

I suspected all along that many of the "protesters" were paid agitators. All one had to do was look at the timing, place and event where the protests happened. Unfortunately, this sends the message to many (including terrorists organizations) that one can try to over throw a government, even violently, and be rewarded for it.

As for America's own OWS! I can just hear it now. When are we going to get paid? We expect to get paid! The government owes us. It should be (another) entitlement. OWS ... want to get paid, then send your time cards to Obama, the DNC, United NY, SEIU, United Federation of Teachers, Working Families Party, MoveOn.org, Th e New Black Panthers, the Communist Party U.S.A., George Soros and his Tides Foundation, the Working Family Party, ACORN, the New Communist Party, Democratic Socialists of America, Van Jones, People For The American Way, The Socialist Party USA, the Marxist-oriented Workers World Party, the International Committee of the Fourth International, and the Communist Party USA. Question for OWS? If you want to get paid, why is it you do not even know who you are really working for?

What makes you think they were paid agitators? What is it about the timing, places, and events that makes you suspect outside interference?

It seems perfectly plausible to me that they were normal protesters.

This report is peanuts (demonstrators got double payments) compared to the other news- Egypt's military court acquitted and freed (today) Ayman al-Zawahiri's brother Mohamad from prison along with Abdel Aziz al-Janal;Alaa Sarhan,Sayed Iman,Murgan Mustapha Salen,Mohamed Islamboli. Mohamad al-Zawahiri was sentedced to death (for conspiring against Egyptian g'ment) previously extradited from UAE in connection with Pre.Anwar Sadat's assassination- sentenced=appeal-freed). It is also of note that the Egyptian Parliament (Muslim Brotherhood,Islamist Salafi and Salafi Noir are calling all previous terror-aligned people to come back to Egypt-essentially an amnesty.

Will that include compensation for journalist Lara Logan?
