Jewish school slayings suspect dead after France cops storm apartment, officials say

The alleged gunman in a series of deadly shootings in France, including one at a Jewish school near Toulouse, is dead after jumping from the apartment where he was hold up for 32 hours.  NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

Updated at 10:58 a.m. ET: TOULOUSE, France -- An Islamist extremist who is believed to have killed seven people in France died Thursday after a shootout with police, officials said.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said that Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old French citizen of Algerian origin who had allegedly confessed to killing three Jewish children and four adults, was hiding in a bathroom when special forces officers raided his ground-floor apartment.

Merah leapt out a window with a weapon in his hand after "shooting madly" at police who were attempting to end the 32-hour standoff, Gueant added.

The Paris prosecutor in charge of investigation told NBC News police found the video camera he used to film all three attacks and described the footage they found as "very graphic."

Merah was found dead outside his home, Gueant said. Police union sources also confirmed Merah's death, with local prosecutors also saying he had been shot in the head.

Gueant said that two officers were injured during the operation.

Merah told negotiators he killed three soldiers, three Jewish children and a rabbi to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and because of French army involvement in Afghanistan.

Authorities said Merah, who claimed to have received training from al-Qaida, was believed to have a weapons cache in the apartment including an Uzi and a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

Police special forces officers prepare to raid Mohamed Merah's home in Toulouse, France, on Thursday.

Earlier, assault rifle and other gunfire rang out for around four minutes. Explosions were also heard. An official told Reuters that gas was also used during the operation to try to paralyze him.

A police source told Reuters that the blasts -- which occurred around 5:35 a.m. ET -- were from flash grenades fired to check for signs of life in the ground-floor apartment. Sustained gunfire was heard in the area around 6:30 a.m. ET.

'No movement during the night'
Before the raid, Gueant told reporters that there had been no sign of life from his apartment for 10 hours.

French police are demanding the surrender of Mohamed Merah, the suspect who allegedly shot seven people and then bragged of bringing France to its knees. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

"There was no movement during the night. We hope he is still alive," Gueant said on RTL radio. He added that two shots had been heard during the night.

Merah boasted to police negotiators on Wednesday night that he had brought France to its knees and said his only regret was not having been able to carry out plans for more killings.

Merah filmed the shootings of the children and the rabbi on Monday using a camera strapped to him.

Email trail led cops to suspect in Jewish school slayings

President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose handling of the crisis may influence voters less than five weeks from an election in which he is running for a second term, promised on Wednesday that justice would be done and asked people not to take vengeance.

Islamic extremist Mohamed Merah, who bragged about killing seven people to punish France, jumped from a window after a French SWAT team burst into the apartment where he had been cornered for more than a day. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

France's elite RAID commando unit detonated three explosions just before midnight on Wednesday, flattening the main door of the building and blowing a hole in the wall, after it became clear Merah did not mean to keep a promise to turn himself in.

An Interior Ministry official said that police blew up the shutters outside the apartment window to pressure him to surrender.

Sporadic blasts and bursts of gunfire rang out throughout the night.

In Israel, tears and defiance at French shooting victims' burial

"What we want is to capture him alive, so that we can bring him to justice, know his motivations and hopefully find out who were his accomplices, if there were any," Defense Minister Gerard Longuet told TF1 television before Thursday's raid.

Merah, who told police negotiators he had accepted a mission from al-Qaida after receiving training in the lawless border area of Pakistan, had identified another soldier and two police officers he wanted to kill, investigators said on Wednesday.

Schools throughout France held a moment of silence in memory of the four killed in the Toulouse school shooting. Meanwhile, French police have launched a massive manhunt for the killer. ITN's Martin Geissler reports.

"He has no regrets, except not having more time to kill more people and he boasts that he has brought France to its knees," Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins, part of the anti-terrorist unit leading the investigation, told a news conference .

The gunman negotiated with police all Wednesday, promising to give himself up and saying that he did not want to die.

"He's explained that he's not suicidal, he doesn't have the soul of a martyr and he prefers to kill but to stay alive himself," the prosecutor said.

Rejected by military
Merah's lawyer Christian Etelin, who has defended him in several minor crimes, said that his client had a tendency towards violence that had worsened after a stay in prison and trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"There was his religious engagement, an increasing hatred against the values of a democratic society and a desire to impose what he believes is truth," Etelin told France 2 television.

Speaking to news channel i-Tele before Merah's death, Etelin said his client "wants to show he is exceptional, omnipotent, and this approach can only end up as something tragic."

He added that Merah had tried to join France's military but was rejected.

Finally this baby killing muslim scumbag is dead! And of course the French muslim's and thier communities will not offer condolences, support, shared sorrow or anything to the Israeli communities. These muslims are the same as American muslims, sit quietly, do nothing, never ever condemn terrorism and offer not a single act of support for the families of those killed, nor a single action to stop terrorism. Every American and every European should stop every single muslim and demand they do something! Every mosque should be picketed and every single muslim iman should be blamed. Every one of these muslims who do nothing are as guilty as the scum bag killer...islam, the most horrible culture on earth!

I guess you haven't been watching the French TV then for making comments without knowing; because the officials of both communities (and ordinary people), Jewish and Muslims, strongly condemned those atrocities. They even organized a common ceremony. Because both communities lost members to this f**cker.

The problem is not Islam in itself. The problem emanates from Muslims who come to Western countries and import a way of life that doesn't go along the values of those countries; and they try to defend those values in the name of their religion.

Often the crisis comes from second-generation Muslims who feel on the margins of the society in which they were born because their parents brought them up with different standards. They feel rejected by their country and then cling to what they think is their religion and a normal way of life when it is an extreme interpretation of a book.

Islam is just a tool in their fight.

But Islam, as any other religion, is able to dissolve in a modern society. Just look at the soldiers who were slain, they were a living proof that Islam and a modern society are compatible.

I'm atheist by the way, I'm just analyzing facts.

The problem is Islam. Muslims in the ME, Asia, Africa, Europe and America attack those who are not Muslim. The Muslim's world is the world of peace--only for those who believe. Everyone else is an infidel.

A new wave of Islamic persecution of Christians and Jews is on the march in the Muslim world today. An estimated 500,000 Christians have fled Iraq since we toppled Saddam Hussein. Coptic churches are being torched in Egypt. Bethlehem, whose population once was over 85% Christian, is now estimated to be less than 10% Christian. And the jihadist genocide in Sudan has claimed an estimated 1.5 million lives.

Nice, Rachel. Islam is a religion of peace, but only for believers. Is that why the Sunnis and Shiites are constantly slaughtering each other?

Islam is medieval superstition totally incompatible with 21st Century knowledge and values. Like communism, it will end up in the dustbin of history.

I think the distinction between the two is the jewish children were targeted delibaretley, whre isrealis claim its unintentional (Because they are in the vicinity of so-called guerillas etc) when palestinian children are killed.

Do not get me wrong, I am not defending israelis by no means; They did and continue to massacre innocent women & children in the "modern" concentration camps in palestine.

The reason they get away with it is the media control here in US and elsewhere...

Even the die-hard liberals elect not to talk about it, probably because they fear they lose their job... and labeled anti-semit...

You remember 4-5 months ago israel & US worked up over palestinian application to UN?

      What happened since?

IF any Pal kids died, and often their deaths are lies either in the death itself (like Mohammed al Dura, who was found alive and whose "death" was proved a propaganda piece by French TV) or in the way they died (auto accidents, honor-killings, stray Pal rocket deaths labeled as "Death by Israel"), it was because the scummy Pals used schoolyards as rocket launch sites, etc.

The Global March to Jerusalem (GMJ) is a groundbreaking new initiative that is organising non-violent civil resistance on 30th March 2012 in Palestine and the four neighbouring countries: Egypt, Lebanon Jordan and Syria.

The peaceful marchers will demand freedom for Jerusalem and its people. Our aim is to end the Zionist policies of apartheid, ethnic cleansing and Judaisation, which all harm the people, land and sanctity of Jerusalem.Judaisation has involved the unrestricted expansion and funding of illegal Israeli settlements, the continued dispossession and demolition of Palestinian property, and the construction of a Separation Wall surrounding the city, all of which have changed the demographics of the holy city from a Palestinian to a Jewish majority.

the only apartheid is in muslim countries: egypt, jordan, iraq, etc. ridding the areas of their ancient jewish populations and now their somewhat-less-ancient-but-way-older than muslim populations of christians!!!

we civilized westerners won't be fooled forever.

Kari, you are a fool. Don't you realize that the acts of Muslim terrorists have destroyed any sympathy the West may have had for the plight of Palestinians? The Palestinians had their chance to establish a Palestinian state, but the PLO and Yasser Arafat walked away from a fair agreement with the Israelis. Subsequent actions by Muslim extremists have alienated the civilized world and wrecked hopes for a Palestinian state any time soon. You can march all you want; humanity is not watching.

We are now in 2012, and we are still living in exile or under the Israeli apartheid regime

here are the South African laws, that pertain to the discriminatory practice, known as apartheid. In reality, using logic and reason, and empirical evidence, can it be stated that Israel is an apartheid state ?

Looking at said laws, prove, that any claim of Israel practicing apartheid is ridiculous !!!!

Under the Reservation of Separate Amenities Act of 1953, municipal grounds could be reserved for a particular race, creating, among other things,

              separate beaches,

There is no such policy in Israel (HOT Israeli women enjoying a day at the beach) Hot Arab Muslim woman at the beach in Tel Aviv, if she continues to wear that Burka in the midday sun, she may die of heat stroke.

              buses,

Arabs, whether Muslims or Christians, are not restricted in Bus travel. Israel even runs a bus service extended in to the disputed teritories .(even after Palestinians blowing up many buses, Hijackings, killing many Israelis)

              hospitals,

Arabs whether Muslim or Christian can go to any hospital and receive free health care

              schools and universities.

are open to all regardless of ethnic, or religious reasons

Signboards such as "whites only" applied to public areas,

There are no "Jews only" signs.

even including park benches.[26] Black people were provided with services greatly inferior to those of whites, and, to a lesser extent, to those of Indian and coloured people.[2]

Further laws had the aim of suppressing resistance, especially armed resistance, to apartheid. The Suppression of Communism Act of 1950 not only banned the South African Communist Party and any other party subscribing to Communism,

Israel has, and had, anti-Israeli, Arab, members of the Knesset

there is in fact a communist party in Israel who include both Arab, and Jewish,"anti Zionist" activists.

but defined Communism and its aims so sweepingly that it had the effect of
legally gagging any opposition to government policy, especially to apartheid.
Disorderly gatherings were banned, as were certain organisations that were
              deemed threatening to the government.

Education was segregated by means of the 1953 Bantu Education Act, which crafted a
separate system of education for African students

Education is not restricted by race or religion.

and was designed to prepare black people for lives as a labouring class.[27]
In 1959 separate universities were created for black, coloured and Indian
              people.

By now, it should be understood, that under the definition of apartheid, Israel is not an apartheid state. Because it can not be supported, by any known observable reality. I Wonder people know that they have bought in to the naritive provided by these dudes, who's leaders say @!$%# like this.

Kariny...obviously you have neither reason, nor intelligence, and with your comments you demonstrate and prove both. However you might look carefully at Israel, a successful, modern, democratic, educated country developing itself with farming, commerce, business and all those things that the arab-muslim corrupt, uneducated adjacent countries cannot manage to do. If there were ever an argument for democracy and education this would be a good example. The muslims and palestinians whine and moan, yet do nothing productive, only foster hate and killing which are the basics of islam.

              The Big Lie: "Israel Apartheid"

              by Christine Williams

Campuses across Canada engaged in Israel Apartheid Week (IAW) events last week amid justified rebukes by the federal government. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney linked IAW to anti-Semitism and accused organizers of using "the cover of academic freedom to demonize and delegitimize the state of Israel" and paint it as racist. In pointing to Israel being the only liberal democracy in the Middle East and singled out for condemnation, Kenney also stated that organizers of IAW ignore the brutal slaughter of the Al-Assa d regime of its own people and the suppression of basic human rights throughout many countries in the Middle East.

Israel Apartheid week began in Toronto in 2005 after Palestinian organizations called for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against the state of Israel. The groups erroneously compared Israel 's treatment of the Palestinians to the treatment of South African blacks, when powerful campus movements had lobbied for divestments and boycotts against South Africa for black liberation. In 1983, the UN levied its condemnation of the practice of apartheid at the World Conference against Racism, where over two dozen countries took part in trade sanctions against South Africa . At the 2001 Durban I Anti-Racism Conference, the agenda was hijacked by Israeli antagonists, led by Iran and then Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat. Israel was singled out as a racist regime and a similar course followed as in the South African anti-apartheid movements, only it was a demonization of Israel that was unjustified. Adding fuel was that South African Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu spuriously compared the conditions of which the Palestinians live to those of South Africa under apartheid.

The goal of Israel Apartheid Week is to erode Zionism and delegitimize the state of Israel. The strategy is a protraction of the Arab nationalist movement and that of Palestinian Radicalism which strives to work against Israel and the Jewish people, evidenced in the collaboration between Adolph Hitler, Adolph Eichmann and the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem during World War II. In an open letter, Palestinian students urge fellow students worldwide to unite for Israel Apartheid Week in widespread harassment, bullying and intimidation of Jewish students. Organizers also call for BDS. Nowhere is the mention of the Palestinian call for Israel's destruction as outlined in both the PA and Hamas Charters.

Even before the State of Israel was established, Israel was sensitive to human rights, and Jewish leaders sought to avoid any situation similar to South Africa, as David Ben-Gurion expressed to Palestinian nationalist Musa Alami in 1934. Today, this commitment can be clearly seen in the State of Israel where Arabs are full citizens with the right to vote, the right to have their own political parties, the right to hold top positions, as they do in Israel's supreme court, its diplomatic corps, all of Israel's hospitals and universities, and even as members of Israel's parliament, the Knesset. Under apartheid, black South Africans were not even allowed to hold citizenship or vote in the very country in which they held the demographic majority. The Palestinian experience in the territories along the separation fence and in the so-called "occupied territories" was put there because of the determination of Palestinians, both in the PLO and Hamas to destroy Israel, as could be seen before the fence was built by the bombings of hotels, discotheques, cafes, and buses. Those territories under dispute were taken by Israel in wars in i947 and 1967, in which Israel, the size of Vancouver Island, was forced to defend itself: both times, five neighboring countries invaded Israel in efforts to destroy it. Israel still needs to defend itself not only from rocket-fire and other attacks, but most recently from continued threats of genocide by Iran, especially should it acquire nuclear capability.

Even after the South African Judge, Richard Goldstone, later retracted his own, UN-sponsored Goldstone report, Deputy Foreign Minister Daniel Ayalon said that, like any country, Israel would defend its citizens against Gaza attacks. This is a very different situation than under South African apartheid. Egypt too erected a wall of separation from the Gaza Strip; the barrier was dubbed the Wall of Shame by Arab writers and leaders for isolating 1.5 million Palestinians, yet Egypt has not been branded "apartheid" by their Muslim "brothers."

While the propaganda of Israel Apartheid Week spreads, the economic growth in the West Bank is 4%, compared to 3% in the U.S., and an astronomical 28% in Gaza. The IDF's Coordinator of Government Activities in Judea and Samaria, Major General Eitan Dangot noted that every day, Israel transfers luxuries into Gaza, including LCD screens, Mercedes and Hyundai jeeps, modern refrigerators, and whirlpool bathtubs. He added that Israel has invested over 50 million shekels, or over USD $10 million, in renovating and expanding the Kerem Shalom crossing through which most of the goods enter Gaza. Any segregation of the Palestinians is based entirely on Israeli security needs, not on racism.

Supporters of Israel Apartheid drives should instead take aim at Hamas, along with other terrorist regimes seeking to destroy the Jewish state and slander its citizens, and who also subject their own citizens to human rights violations. A gay man from the West bank, now living in Tel Aviv for 12 years, and featured in Haaretz, for example, arrived in Israel at age 14 because, he says: "If I returned to Nablus, it would be like throwing paper into a fire." He rarely goes back to visit his family for fear of attack and torture by Palestinian police. As even interim Canadian Liberal Leader Bob Rae noted in a release this past week: "Israeli Apartheid Week continues to defy logic and the cause of social justice." He went on to state that organizers of IAW choose to ignore the appalling massacres and human rights violations currently going on in Syria and Iran.

Apartheid in Israel does not exist; however, gender apartheid , in which women are treated as things, but things that carry your honor; and apartheid against gays -- as well as racism and slavery against blacks, Palestinians and non-Muslims -- are all commonplace in the Muslim world. In Saudi Arabia, some roads are marked for Muslims and others for non-Muslims; Bibles are not even allowed into the country. In Lebanon, Palestinians are unable to become citizens or work a number of jobs , and are kept in overcrowded and wretched ghettos called "refugee camps." As Canada's Immigration Minister Jason Kenney noted about Israel Apartheid Week: "There is a point at which well-intentioned debate is overrun by hatred and intolerance; creating a toxic environment that prevents meaningful dialogue on important issues from taking place." This intimidation and toxicity has no place on the campuses of our Western societies.

              http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/2930/israel-apartheid-big-lie

This charge of "apartheid" is a big red herring designed to take attention away from Muslim terrorism and the failed "Arab Spring."

And why shouldn't the jews have their homeland just like the palestinians ?? ...they WERE driven out by the Romans from that area according to history (Read it !!) and then finally made their way back to THEIR occupied lands generations later..!! They are part of middle east history.. and like it or not, they need a homeland, especially after what happened in WWll. Why can't Egypt, Jordan and others form a homeland out of the Sinai for the palestinians, and have the world participate in rebuilding the area for them as a new Palestine ?? What is wrong with these Arab nations doing this for their own people and end the suffering by so many..???

English as a third language? (interpreting - "...go AHEAD..." seems to make sense)

I'm glad this idiot is dead. The sad part is, there are others like him in France. The police should round up all others they are just watching now. They knew about this kid and his brother for a while but ignored them, until this one acts out like he did.

First it was reported that the guy had died by killing himnself wirth a knife. Then he was killed by sniper fire. Now he's dead from jumping out of a window. He's either a cat whose used up 3 of his 9 lives or the reporting is incompetent.

This man was so gulity as the soldier than murdered 16 civilians in their sleep.

Those who denouce the slaughter in France should also denouce the massacre in Afganistan, instead of trying to white wash the crime and let the animal off the hook.

I believe those who answered my reponse are jealous ... you shouldn't be.... part of sharing the joy of being Muslim is sharing. And for those who insist about individuals being the label of our religion, you are wrong. Hitler, Stalin, Jeffrey Dahmer, The Oklahoma City Bomber, Son of Sam none were Muslim however EVERYONE of them is/was a terrorist. Look at the numbers......of course there will be more wrongdoing when the group has more people and CONVERSELY, there will be so MANY MORE doing GOOD. Many times stories on TV are shown where a Muslim is a hero....there is NEVER any mention that person is MUSLIM. It is only stated when one does wrong. Of course I agree there are extremists and I disagree totally with what they do. But because my neighbor kills someone, don't send me to jail. Don't label all a people of any race, religion or creed as anything. God created everyone as individuals. Don't ever think HIS DOING needs any corrections. He NEVER MAKES mistakes.

I believe you may be the uneducated one. I know many Palestini people and they are intelligent. Do something different....sit down with one and talk to them and learn why they are upset and listen to their intellect. You might learn something.

Sure are a lot of Jack Bauer chest thumpers out today.

First: The French have been fighting terrorists far longer than we have. I have been to France and seen their cops in action, pretty bada**. We got alot of our intel on 911 from the French. As for the 'surrender' meme, France is seperated from Germany by flat plains. They fought well inspite of that and continued to resist all through the war, including helping allied soldiers trapped behind the lines.

Second : Remember it was the French who helped finance and supply our revolution.

Third: Why didn't RAID storm the suspect's place right away. Well, may it had to do with the fact, the guy was admitted al-queda which means he could have been strapped with explosives or rigged the house. The risk is more cops and/or civilians killed. Better safe than sorry. Lastly, taking the guy alive could have led to more intel.

@ rick-4625247 You have no fck idea about the French Foreign Legion. The 55% of them are frenchmen who , by tradition have to chose a french speaking nationality. They are called "gaulois". The rest are for foreign nations and with a lot quick to desert when things go wrong. The relations between legionnaires and their officers is something you event can't imagine if you have not be in. I can give many exemple of french "with balls" like the Paras, the Marsouins, the Chasseurs Alpins, the GIGN or the FUMACOs but...you are so little little that you couldn't understand. Then stay on your poor little life and thank internet that you can have a pseudo life...

From the way that that it was reported, it appears that this guy knew the soldiers that he killed and/or knew that hey were Muslim soldiers. In fact I doubt if either of these cases were true. I think he just wanted to kill some soldiers and did in fact murder them. And, it was later determined that these soldiers were of the Muslim faith However, his intent later on, was to kill some Jews. That situation was predetermined.
