BBC: 'Borat' anthem played at Kuwait medal ceremony for Kazakhstan winner

Borat Sagdiyev, played by actor Sacha Baron Cohen, attends a "book signing" in 2007 in Los Angeles.

Kazakhstan's shooting team demanded an apology after a spoof national anthem from the comedy film "Borat" was played instead of the real one at a medal ceremony in Kuwait, the BBC reported Friday.

The team's coach told Kazakh media the organizers of the Kuwait tournament had downloaded the parody from the Internet by mistake and had also got the Serbian national anthem wrong.

Video of Thursday's original ceremony posted on YouTube shows gold medalist Maria Dmitrienko listening solemnly to the anthem before smiling.

The BBC reported that the team demanded an apology and the ceremony was later rerun.

The spoof anthem, from the movie featuring British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," praises Kazakhstan for its superior potassium exports and for having the cleanest prostitutes in the region.

"Borat" portrays Kazakhs as ignorant and backward and was banned in Kazakhstan.

It might not be wise to piss off the armed shooting team.

My thoughts exactly.

You would think they would play the joke on the curling team or maybe the Men's Synchronization Swim Team.

its not his fault, its the people that downloaded the wrong and used it without checking it first.

you would think that with all the money kuwait has, they woudl have official copies of all anthems for sporting events and other needs.

They should have checked it first. But it's ok, they can use the organizers responsible for this as target practice.

I don't get what the big deal is. An anthem that says your country is the greatest in the world shouldn't offend anyone.

Sure, but greatest because of its potassium exports and unusually clean prostitutes?

The Kazak's should counter troll the whole world and adopt this as their official National Anthem.

Americans are a bunch of jerks. They will make fun of any country in the world. I wonder how many people would be laughing if our National Anthem was played as a joke. I can hear Rush Limbaugh now. John McCain of course would want to bomb the country.

What does this have to do with America? Sasha Baron Cohen's British, and it was officials in Kuwait who made the mistake... there's not really a need to make this a Democrat v. Republican issue at all.

I personally believe the U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some,
uh...people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our
education like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as
and...I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should
help the U.S., err, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and
the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future.

Wait, who are they demanding an apology from? The people who were too stupid to download the right anthem or Borat?

              Reply#14 - Sat Mar 24, 2012 2:04 PM EDT

They downloaded their national anthem from the Internet, and it turned out to be the BORAT version.

So, when the reporter says, ""Borat" portrays Kazakhs as ignorant and backward," he's actually saying Sacha Baron-Cohen had the character spot-on.

Except for Bruno, which is filthy and disgusting, the guy's a comic genius, in addition to being a very accomplished scholar.

The anthem was downloaded by someone from Kuwait, not from Kazakhstan.

Lighten up, Sparky. Baron Cohen is a comedian and the pseudo anthem was just part of his act.

Maybe you'd be more entertained watching the best of Limbaugh!
