Updated at 6:07 a.m. ET: CAIRO -- One person was shot dead and at least 18 others were injured in overnight clashes between security forces and angry soccer fans in Egypt's Port Said, authorities said.
Supporters of Al-Masry were upset because their team had been banned for two seasons in the wake of the country's worst stadium disaster.
"Hundreds of angry fans clashed with military police after the decision was announced," one witness told Reuters.
Citing the Al-Ahram newspaper, the BBC reported that a 13-year-old boy died in hospital after being shot in the back.
NBC News reported that protests by Al-Masry supporters on Saturday also prevented thousands of workers from entering Port Said's investment zone.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) banned Al-Masry on Friday following the pitch invasion that killed 74 fans last month. In that game, Al-Masry beat Cairo's Al-Ahly. However, some fans were upset for what they said were obscene signs raised by Al-Ahly club fans.
Survivors of the stadium riot say men wielding batons, knifes, and fireworks streamed from Al-Masry stands and stormed the field to attack Al-Ahly fans, stabbing them, undressing them and tossing them off bleachers while the police looked on.
At least 74 people were killed and hundreds more injured when rival soccer fans in Egypt rioted after a match. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Cairo.
The melee sparked days of street protests. Most of the dead were members of Ultras Ahlawy, a group of avid politicized soccer fans who have long enmity with the police. Ultras has played a key role in the uprising against Hosni Mubarak.
Egyptian prosecutors have indicted several top Al-Masry and security officials amid claims they conspired or were negligent during last month's violence.
'Shot dead'
The latest clashes began late Friday and continued into early Saturday, witnesses said.
Military police fired shots in the air to disperse hundreds of soccer fans protesting outside the Suez Canal Authority building in Port Said.
"One was shot dead, in the back, and 18 were injured in the clashes, two of them are suffering gunshot wounds," a medical source said.
After soccer melee, Egypt learns tough lesson: Sharing blame
Earlier, the EFA said in a statement that Al-Masry's soccer activities would be suspended for the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. The club would be reinstated to the Premier League in the 2013/14 season.
Port Said Stadium, where the stampede took place, would be closed for three years, the EFA said.
Hired thugs?
During the February pitch invasion, steel doors at the stadium were bolted shut, trapping fans trying to escape from the stands and dozens were crushed to death.
Many fans blamed the government for failing to send enough police to the stadium given the tense build-up to the match, and many believe the violence was started by hired thugs. At least 1,000 people were injured.
Prosecutors referred 75 people, including nine security officials in Port Said, to the criminal court on March 15 to face trial over the violence.

I really want to know why are soccer fans so violent!?!
This is a classic example of .. If you can't play nice you don't get to play at all. What a bunch of simple minded animals. Seriously guys... Way to prove their point as to why they banned your team.
Because sitting there watching a group of men kick a ball up and down a field for 90 minutes, while only putting the ball in the net once or twice, is as boring as all get out. Just think how long you would sit and be enthralled by an NBA game in which nobody could put the ball through the net....or a NASCAR race in which everyone did 25 mph to avoid crashes.
Soccer is even worse than watching baseball.
At least, when the baseball is hit into the stands you get to run around and try to keep it.
In soccer, when the ball is hit into the stands, the fans have to give it back because nobody thought enough ahead to bring another ball....'
They are violent because they are Muslim. Life does not mean as much to them.
And before anyone says that watching any sport is stupid......
Best spectator sport in the world is Women's Beach Volleyball.
Women in bikini's running.........and jumping.......gotta love it.
Baywatch ran for several seasons with the same concept.......I so do miss that TV show.
Politicized soccer fans...interesting!
@CPO Sharkey
"...Soccer is even worse than watching baseball..."
Thar's why close to 1 billion (that's Billion with the B) sport fans watched the soccer world cup of 2006.
Now tell me again how many fans watched your "World Series" baseball tournament???
I would speculate that this isn't about soccer, about politics, about race or ethnicity, or about any other major concern that I have read on NV. The truth is, I have absolutely no idea what this is about!!!! What does one say about something like this; inexplicable!
And it happens here, too. I've seen images of US and Canadian fans turning over cars after their teams win or lose. Google 'sports fan beaten' and see how bad it gets right here.
Perhaps because of the fact that soccer happens to be a very intense and passionate game that captivates the minds of billions of people from Copenhagen to Cape Town, Moscow to Montevideo. Yes it is true that only one or two goals are scored in each game, but that is not from a lack of activity on the field, but rather from the difficulty of actually scoring it. This often leads to a situation of high nervousness and tension among fans watching their favorite teams play (often with a long history of contentious/controversial matches against the particular opposition) and when you combine this with dynamics of a group of people, you will get individuals who cannot control their emotions and will start something. It is not an issue of race, religion or nationality, but occurs all over the world.
Without reading the article just seeing the title on main page
"Deadly clashes erupt after soccer club is banned"
I knew it would be one of those wacko Middle East countries!
They have largely empty lives and try to fill them with the exploits of others on the soccer field. If their team is banned they have nothing but their own squalid existence. so, riot and murder seem reasonable.
The soccer riots are just a symptom of the illness that is afflicting Egypt. The population in Egypt is 80 million in 1970 the population was 33 million in 42 years they have more than doubled the number of mouths to feed. Egypt imports 40% of total food products and 60% of the wheat. Approximately 40% of Egyptians live on $2 a day.
Egyptians rely on butane cylinders for their cooking fuel. In recent days there has been a shortage butane cylinder which are being stolen and sold in the black market.
The small farmers were forced of their land by corrupt politicians. Therefore Egypt cannot grow more food.

It happened because Islam breeds hatred and violence.
Im convinced its the absence of women in almost all aspects of daily life that makes for a violent sausage party that is the most of middle east. It totally makes sense - not getting laid and constantly hanging out in large groups of all dudes, what else are you gonna do lol?
It happened because Islam breeds hatred and violence.
You know that comment is really uncalled for, the riot last month is not even the worst soccer riot in history. My husband is Egyptian and he is the most kind, respectful man i have ever met. I am 100% Christian and 100% American and i do not believe islam breeds hatred and violence, take a good look at all religions and their history. We are all at fault to horrible actions against out fellow human beings. Every religion has bad apples but you cannot say a entire religion is bad just because some ppl do bad things
sonar guy,
I've visited Egypt three times and they're a very passionate people. Next to Islam and perhaps family, soccer is King and it surely gets the blood boiling. Locals, in this case mostly men as pointed out, follow their favorite teams closely. A lot of testosterone abounds and because of poverty many folks are already on edge. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a recipe for this kind of thing.
As to Islam's role, I can't think of a connection but would welcome intelligent insight from that angle.
Another thing, Egyptians, as well as other mid-easterners, tend to be a bit conspiratorial-minded and sometimes become firmly convinced that behind the scenes scullduggery is at play. And for that matter , the believers of such aren't always off-base. Just the same rumors can quickly spread amongst a crowd causing unrest. But Egyptians are not callous and I'm sure this and other like incidents breaks many hearts.
During my visits to Egypt I saw so much of interest. I also made it a point to reach out to the people the best I could. I came away loving the land and the people and will gladly return some day. Regardless of Muslim or Christian, there were many kind folks who would have given me the shirt off their back.
I also met a few folks who didn't have much use for the west, and probably not for me either. But even then, they were willing to discuss and debate current issues. I'm sad for Egypt's troubles but will always be happy to call a number of Egyptians my friend. I know right now if I showed up I'd be welcomed with open arms. God bless them all, Muslim and Christian alike.
To sonar guy,
Now that's statement is what makes you stand out from the rest as being the most ignorant, stupid around.
How dare Sonar use freedom of speech....
Yes, but British soccer fans are jiust as bad. On the A-3 highway in England, buses with soccer fans are banned from the restaurants
Islam is a curse to the world. MOST MUSLIMS ARE RADICALS. Just look in the news, EVERYDAY muslims are killing people. This is NOT a small minority. This is nothing but evil acting as a religion...............
@sonar guy
"It happened because Islam breeds hatred and violence."
Stupidiest comment....
You should look at christian England for heatred and violence... You should also read "among the thugs" by Bill Buford.. .A real eye opener.
If "Islam breeds violence" then why are their riots at soccer games in Ireland and England and Brazil and Germany?
Are the stands in Ireland and England and Brazil and Germany filled with Muslim soccer fans?
'If "Islam breeds violence" then why are their riots at soccer games in Ireland and England and Brazil and Germany?
Are the stands in Ireland and England and Brazil and Germany filled with Muslim soccer fans?'
And how come US and Canadian fans burn cars and go on rampages when their teams win or lose playoffs?
Dave, how is it that you make the claim that "MOST MUSLIMS ARE RADICALS?" Surely you are enlightened enough to realize truth is often different, or at least deeper, than what can be garnered from a new report.
I've traveled to several mid-east countries and most of the people I met, be they Muslim, Christian, or Jewish were nice as pie. In fact, many Muslims I've conversed with would consider it good fortune if ever given the chance to travel to America, and that's not for the chance to peform some kind of treachery or plot future terrorist acts. Rather, many Muslims have an honest interest in America because they've heard about things like America's great natural beauty and wonderful cities. I think some Muslims also want to see what exactly is the reality of America, which most have only seen through a Hollywood movie. Pretty natural behaviour if you ask me. Now, I acknowledge there's no shortage of evil-dooers in the Islamic world and these miscreants will obviously go to great lengths to destroy our lifes and lifestyle. Nonetheless, these thugs, although granted it doesn't take many, are not the majority, rather they are the minority. Really, the priority of most Muslims is putting bread on the table and raising a family, hardly radical concepts.
You've also got to remember us Christians haven't exactly had a history of saintly activities. In the name of Chrisitianity we've spilled more than just a little blood, and some of that continues to this day. I'll certainly concede Christian terrorism is kind of a blip when compared to the terrorism rising from the Islamic world, but just remember there was a time when the actions of Christians were more than unkind, and today some of the statements by Christians, often by politicians, are downright mean-spirited.
I do want to note I fully advocate strong and continued vigilance for our nation's security as well as citizen's abroad because the hard truth is many Muslims do indeed wish the absolute worst for the west and continue to plot henious acts aimed at us. I just wish folks like yourself would choose to be better informed than claiming radicals, which I assume is synonomous with terrorists or their backers, make up the majority of Muslims. For one thing, intelligent decisions concerning our true enemies and how to deal with potential threats are not aided by unfounded rhetoric. We must be discerning and wise, traits which will aid both U.S. diplomatic and military intelligence goals.
Please take care and best regards,
Larry MacKinnon
Muslims killing Muslims, STILL going strong since the 7th century!
First I thank Larry for his lecture 2nd I will give Dave some information i he is knwelegable of what is going in the world , what happened in Egypt is not normal I'm soccer fan from Egypt never happened before also it happened in Itali , england Holland also in South America many times that it doesn"t mean Catholic in Itali or South America are Terrorists, and don't forget that Egypt in tough times now after 60 years of oppression from the melitary rules Dave you have to get the right news from many sources instead for watching FOX NEWS the very Extrimist TV in the World my best wishes to all.
DR. ELSAYED HAMOUDA
^^ Not sure what's more upsetting, the fact that you're a Dr. or the fact you mispelled your name. C'mon, really??
Larry Mackinnon & Esayed Hamouda:
I'm very happy that for you that you had the opportunity to visit Egypt on multiple occasions and report back on how nice the Egyptians all are.
I'd love to do the same. Except I'm Jewish. And regarding Middle Eastern states not named Israel, I'm either banned from entering, or would have to hide my religious beliefs for my own safety. So please stop it with your BS about Egypt being such a wonderful country. Fact is, countries dominated in population by Christians allow freedom of religion. Islamic countries do not. It's a basic fact that is impossible to deny. I don't care how it was 200 years ago.
I hate when people say stupid things like "I've been to Egypt or Saudi Arabia or Qatar, and they're all nice people. We just don't understand them". F**k that. When I'm not even allowed into the country because of my beliefs, you don't have to lecture me about how the media falsely portrays the actions of a few to represent the whole.
Crazy behavior - they just love their violence
ONE warning then SHOOT to kill. unless this is done you will get weekly violence like this.
There is no reason to go crazy just because your team lost etc.
Now..let's not be to critical of the Egyptian Muslims, as they plod along in their efforts to form a democratic nation. What's a riot and a few deaths when you're trying to build a country. There are similar parallels in our own history. It was back in 1787, just before the ratification of our Constitution that a similar event took place. Several of the delegates to the convention were taking a break from the rigors of forming a nation and decided to play a cut throat game of croquet. It pitted those in favor of a strong central federal form of government vs those more in favor of a confederacy. Tempers flared, wigs were tossed, wickets were upended and by the end of the match, several feathers had been ruffled. It got down right ugly. So...don't be so quick to criticize, we have similar skeletons in our own closet.
apples oranges
Egypt was once the leading civilization in the world , sciences , medicine , literature etc and in the 6 th century someone wrote a book based on conquest , subjugation and murder and they have been sliding backwards ever since !
The USA has been moving forward for just 2 centuries but has surpassed any country in history UNTIL the politicians started ignoring the Constitution !
Selective law enforcement and crony capitalism is destroying this country !
If you "think" that they will form a "democratic nation" then you've been smoking too much. They'll end up with the most radical "mullahs" in charge and an insane government like that of Iran.
How many of those that murdered Christians and burned christian churches have been caught or prosecuted-- Answer-- ZERO. Do notice that the "police" stand-by and let the violence occur unless it threatens something the radical leftists want to save.
Sadly the Koran does NOT teach tolerance and peaceful co-existence; it does advocate killing those that refuse to convert to its "religion" and killing those that would leave that "religion".
What moron edited this? It's knives, not knifes.
I played one season of soccer. Found it to be a game played by bullies and sissies and atttend by mobs of drunken misfits. Guess since it can be played with nothing but a ball it appeals to that sort. They need mob violence to even make it interesting.
If you "played" one season, then you weren't in an professional league. the rest of your remarks stink of your ignorance of the game, the rules and the truth.
Whats with these soccer fans? This happens the world over. A friend of mine in the Netherlands and me have had discussions about the level of violence that soccer fans exhibit. They are just over the top. He says that it is normal behavior for them. How sad, so very sad.
alot of these posts are blaming islam. it is true that islam is ruled by hatred and violence, not just a few bad apples or the exceptions. but this is a soccer thing. it happens in backwards third world nations such as egpyt, sure, but also all over england. its not too different in the states, weve seen rioting even when the local sports team wins. because soccer is the most popular sport in many of these nations, you have this passion.
What do you expect, they're savages.
My thoughts also: savages. But Obama kind of savages. I wonder if he is going to apologize to the government in advance, on the off chance that an American was involved.
All stupid people are Republicans!
"Jimee"; Try looking in a mirror for the view of someone TRULY and deeply Ignorant and too stupid to realize it. Only the ignorant would have put Obama with zero experience in the White House.
All homosexual people are Democrats Jimee
What happened in Port Said has nothing to do with Islam and/or soccer, it is a result of
1. The Incompetent Government ruling Egypt after the dismantling of Mubarak's regime.
2. Conspiracy of old Mubarak's people who still have access to the local Governments
3. Plots by the current rulers to punish an opposition group and blame Port Said for their crime
These factors resulted in the Massacre in February during a soccer game with Al Ahly. The target of the massacre was Al Ahly hard-core fans "Ultras", and many believe that this attack was plotted by the military rulers to punish Al Ahly's Ultras. Many Egyptians, especially people of Port Said, believed that the attack was not started by the local fans, although they may have taken part in it. They believe that the February attack on Al Ahly's Ultras was plotted by the Military rulers to punish the Ultras for their active role in Egyptian politics as an opposition party.
Thus when the team in Port Said was punished for this attack while the people who were behind it are still at large, even the trial of those who were charged did not start yet the locals got mad and started the recent riot.
SORRY THIS IS QUITE CONFUSING BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS
So maybe Mubarak isn't looking so bad after all...lol.
Mubarak really wasn't bad. That's why this Arab or Muslim or whatever brotherhood is out to kill him and his family. And these Egyptians can't play the game anyway; most fans should riot unless they get their admission back.
Coptic,
Ultras supported the removal of the regime? Right.
Than why is the current goverment punishing them, I thought they were the hero's, for the lack of a better word?
MRZ, the January revolution was started by idealist youth and was supported from the beginning by the Ultras. The current rulers of Egypt were opportunist who took advantage of the revolution and the Ultras did not accept this result and continued to oppose the Government.
An example of this opposition was that just before the massacre in Port Said, one of Al Ahly's Ultras, a College student BTW, was killed in anti-Government demonstration. Then, Al Ahly's Ultras staged a great demonstration in commemoration of their martyr and against the Government and many believe that what happened in Port Said was a punishment to the Ultras for their defiance. BTW here is a recording of Al Ahly's Ultras

i agree with you my friend coptic christian, many people don't know what is really happening in middle east, thank you again.
coptic muslim- means egyptian muslim
Thank you my friend, I used to be an Ahlawy fan before leaving Egypt, I stopped following this team and became a fan of local American teams. So I was pleasantly surprised by this recent development, namely the Ultras, they are definitely playing a great role as a popular movement, or what we may call "a band of brothers". What happened in Port Said and what continues to happen is a travesty of justice, I hope that the real criminals behind these massacres are brought to justice.
This is another Al Ahly's Ultras song criticizing the Egyptian policemen, saying that they could barely make it to college but through connections made it to the Police College and now they are taking the fun out of the Ultras life. You can use Google translate to get the translation of the paragraph under the video.

and the people in north america call hockey violent.
Maybe the ban was justified, since it cause the violence AGAIN. Soccer should be played in a closed stadium -- no spectators allowed -- and televised. That way the fans would need to get together somewhere else to commit mayhem. Just pen the fans up in a giant fenced off enclosure and let them go at it. Maybe that could be a new sport in the Middle East. No athletes necessary. Oh, right, they already have that -- it's called terrorism.
And if things don't go well, time for the Crosley Tenders, yes mate?
sounds like the book "hunting the tiger" the 'tiger' a slovic who threatened to kill all the oposing team members if his team lost....and went all the way to win the world cup with it.....remember the riots and killings by thugs in the 90's at these games...and we all thought....those crazy slov's is all!!! the 'tiger' was later assasinated in a hotel lobby in slovenia....he was one of the pres. henchmen....
Wonderful that "soccer" is the politically correct sport of choice in American schools. There have been dozens of similar incidents over the past 10 years. Think American football is violent? Not even close.
Sorry "steve the dog man"; you have no idea what you are talking about and seem to be suffering from a serious physical condition; Recto-cranial insertion". Violence at high school soccer matches is RARE and any violence on the field is handled immediately by the Center referee with those involved ejected and usually banned from future play for up to eight ( 8 ) weeks by the state authority.
The truth is, there are MORE violent incidents at High School Football Matches and Basketball games than soccer matches.
Now do go and try to learn something before spouting nonsense.
This is what the Romans would of called "barbarians". lol..
Hers is how you stop the problems in Syria. Tell all the African and European nut jobs Assad was bad mouthing their soccer teams and has paid off referees to fix games.
That will put an end to Assad.
Here lies the problem Cassandra Sanchez Quiroz: You can tell a Christian he is wrong because of the teachings but you can't do that with a Muslim because of their teachings. There are very few places in the Middle East you can freely practice a faith other than Muslim. Do you see a problem there?
I heard they are taking down the big soccer stadium in Poland, everyone got stuck sitting behind a pole...
We see this same behavior to a degree in America too. How many instances of rioting can you recall after a city's team wins a championship or a major upset takes place at a college campus. I am a sports fan too, but I try to remember that the results of how "my" team does doesn't make me a better or less of a person. I see people react all the time like they accomplished something if their team wins. That they are now superior over another person when their team beats the others. And done in a crowd you get mob behavior.
I wish soccer was popular here in the USA; we need more sport related riots.
Another that spouts from pure ignorance. How many riots have you seen AFTER a professional soccer match in this country? How about after a championship match? Can you say ZERO ?
How many riots did you see after the World Cup Soccer Games were played here in the USA?-- Once again, Can you say --ZERO
Well, How about after the World Cup Matches when they were played in the USA?-- Once again can you say ZERO ?
Now go check out Baseball championships, Football championships, Basketball championships, Hockey championships; No matter IF your team wins or loses there are riots, looting, and destruction of property by the Fans.
Now go spout your brand of ignorance else where.
Every three hours they should start a new game.
Larry McKinnon,
Conspiratorial minded equals paranoid sociopaths !
