Asma al-Assad was banned from traveling to Europe and her financial assets were frozen. But the sanctions may be largely impotent, as a UK passport holder she can't be prevented from entering the UK. WASHINGTON -- Iran is providing a broad array of assistance to Syrian President Bashar Assad to help him suppress anti-government protests, from high-tech surveillance technology to guns and ammunition, U.S. and European security officials say.
Tehran's technical assistance to Assad's security forces includes electronic surveillance systems, technology designed to disrupt efforts by protesters to communicate via social media, and Iranian-made drone aircraft for overhead surveillance, the officials said. They discussed intelligence matters on condition of anonymity.
"Over the past year, Iran has provided security assistance to Damascus to help shore up Assad. Tehran during the last couple of months has been aiding the Syrian regime with lethal assistance - including rifles, ammunition, and other military equipment -- to help it put down the opposition," a U.S. official said.
"Iran has provided Damascus (with) monitoring tools to help the regime suppress the opposition. It has also shared techniques on Internet surveillance and disruption," the official continued.
Syrians brave gunfire in anti-Assad protests
He added that Iran had also provided Assad's government with "unarmed drones that Damascus is using along with its own technology to monitor opposition forces."
Syria's rebel fighters are desperate for arms and ammunition. Members of the Free Syrian Army were forced from Idlib - one of the last rebel strongholds. ITN's John Irvine reports from outskirts of Idlib, the north western city which rebels surrendered last week.
Iranian security officials have also traveled to Damascus to advise Assad's entourage how to counter dissent, the official said. Some Iranian officials have stayed on in Syria to advise Assad's forces, he added.
Iran's multi-pronged security aid to Syria appears to have helped Assad's government in its increasingly violent campaign to hold on to power in the face of a year-long protest movement. The United Nations estimates 8,000 civilians have died in the conflict.
However, the U.S. and European officials said the Syrian government's survival is not totally dependent on continuing help from Tehran.

U.S. and allied official broadly agree that Assad's control remains solid. His opponents are hopelessly disorganized, the officials said, which may make it possible for the Syrian president and his entourage to hold onto power for years.
"At current levels Iranian aid is important but not really a game changer in the overall conflict," a U.S. official noted.
Paul Conroy, a photographer for the Sunday Times, was badly injured while on assignment in Syria and his colleague – legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin was killed. Conroy joins NBC's Andrea Mitchell to reflect on the situation.
Iran has for decades been a patron to Syria, which has helped funnel aid and weapons to the Iranian-backed Shiite Muslim militia Hezbollah in Lebanon.
During the protests that followed Iran's disputed 2009 presidential election -- the biggest mass protests since the Islamic Republic's founding in 1979 -- Iranian authorities disrupted social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as cell phone networks.
Iran's internal crackdown reportedly has escalated since then.

A European official said that the Iranians were providing Syrian security agencies with hardware and software that would help them disrupt efforts to organize protests inside Syria and efforts by anti-government elements to spread their message to supporters outside the country.

Officials said that Syria had also obtained some surveillance technology from European suppliers.
As protests against Assad's rule grew last year, the United States first raised the possibility that Iranian authorities were helping their Syrian counterparts suppress dissent.

Last June the U.S. Treasury Department announced economic sanctions against two of Iran's most senior police officials for allegedly helping Assad's government crush protests.
The Treasury imposed U.S. economic sanctions on Ismail Ahmadi Moghadam and Ahmad-Reza Radan, chief and deputy chief of Iran's national police force, because their agency had "provided support to the Syrian General Intelligence Directorate and dispatched personnel to Damascus in April to assist the Syrian government in suppressing the Syrian people."
The Treasury alleged that Radan had traveled to Damascus to meet with Syrian security agencies, to whom he allegedly provided "expertise to aid in the Syrian government crackdown on the Syrian people."

U.S. officials said Iranian efforts to bolster Syria's surveillance capabilities have been supplemented by deliveries to Syria of Iranian-made unarmed surveillance drone aircraft.
Earlier this month a specialized website, The Aviationist, reported that a drone flying over the city of Homs, the site of recent violent clashes between government and opposition forces, had been identified as a "Pahpad" drone, which the website said meant "remotely piloted aircraft" in Farsi.
Saudi Arabia will deliver military equipment to Syrian rebels in an effort to stop the bloodshed. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
In February another specialized website, Open Source GEOINT, published freeze-frame images from what purported to be an amateur cameraman's video of a suspected drone flying over a Damascus suburb.
Iran vows to retaliate 'on the same level' to US or Israel attack
The website noted that some news reports had suggested that the United States was flying intelligence drones over Syria but that the drone in the pictures did not appear to be a U.S. model.
The website cited speculation that the drone might be of Iranian origin. Ynet News, an Israeli website, reported this month that Syria's defense industry produces drones that are technologically identical to Iranian-produced models and speculated that these domestically produced models were what Syrian security forces had deployed.

However, a U.S. official said that some of Syria's drones had come directly from Iran.
Last weekend the Iranian news agency Fars announced that Iranian experts had produced what it called a "new type of drone" known as the Shaparak, or "Butterfly," which it said was "capable of carrying out military and border patrol missions."

When you look at it right, Iran has a huge investment in seeing to it Assad stops the rebels in Syria. Think about what would happen in Iran if Syrian civilians had a government less restrictive. How soon then would Iranians want to get rid of the dictators in their government?
The problem in the Middle East is based upon the fact that while they educated their populations, they also armed these educated Middle Easterners with the knowledge of how backward their countries really are. So, the rebellions are going to continue for one reason: Dictatorships are now too openly seen for what they are: power grabs by a tiny faction. In other words, dictatorships will continue to be attacked. So the mullahs and other power freaks in the Middle East better get used to it.
Everyone knows Iran is evil, but this dumb administration says it is not a game changer. What a pathetic leader we have.

Raptor, I've been To Iran and have skied there. Too many assume that what is going on in Teheran is asssimulated into the Iranian culture and it isn't. The young are more cosmopolitan. I think alot of the Arab Springs were precipitated thrugh social media.. I realise Iranians are not arabic..My grandparents are from Damascus,Syria and my mother from lebanon,which use to be the Jewelof The Middle East. Thank God they came to America.

Having said that, just what makes anyone think that the United States and it's "allies of the day" are the only countries that can sell weapons to other countries? Don't you think that weapons sold by US companies have actually killed American forces? Don't pretend to be a fool and think that the US is not a worldwide weapons seller.

I don't know why this is news. Iran has supported the Baathist regime in Syria for a long time. Of course they are going to help Assad.
The real question is of helping the rebels and who the rebels are. If they are true liberals, the young facebook generation we and the rest of the ME countries should help. But there are indications that Radical Islamist factions are in the mix in the Syrian rebellion. Then it becomes murky.
What really needs to happen is the leadership in Iran has to be changed. The people of Iran need their own Arab (Persian) spring and get rid of the clerics. See what happens to Assad without Khomeini backing him

Reagan sold weapons to Iran in a deal arranged to get them to hold the hostages until he became president. They also sold more weapons to Iran during the Iran-Contra affair. The US military industrial complex has sold weapons to Qaddafi, Saddam Hussein and almost every other brutal right wing dictator on the planet. So is Iran the middle man in this weapons deal rather than Israel? Bashar Assad certainly has weapons made by US companies at his disposal that US war profiteers sold him over the years. The ZioNazi war profiteering spawn is certainly behind this article. They won't have to spread their propaganda much longer because there is a false flag attack against common American people scheduled right after Obama is reelected so the blood drinkers will be happy profiting from WWIII until it brings on the final judgement day of human extinction.
Obama won't suggest any air campaign against Syria because there are Iranians on the ground there as well as a strong possibility of Russian troops/advisors. There already is a Russian tanker docked there unloading oil for Assad's military forces.
He fears the consequences of Russian or even Iranian deaths from any bombings.
The end result is that an incompetent Obama will have no other option than continuing his ineffective sanction policies, still another reason why Obama is incapable of preventing the iranians from developing a nuclear weapon.
Why should this even be considered news? Iran is behind 95% of the terrorism in the middle east. Of course Syria would get arms from Iran! Why spend hard currency with Russia when it can get them free from Iran. We are not looking at high tech military equipment. Guns, grenades, tanks, heavy machine guns. In your post I would say you were right on the mark about 90% of what you said. The above quote is where I differ.
The opportunities to invade Iran were actually sparse as I see it as most of their operations were covert and below the radar; very slick of them. The reasons for an outright attack were sparse and would have caused a major outcry among the other superpowers. Have no doubt, I believe Iran has been pulling the strings all along, but it has always been difficult to prove.
Iraq was in fact more powerful outright with the 4th largest standing army in the world. The game changer was though, that after we beat Iraq in "92 for brutally attacking Kuwait, for sending scuds at Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and continuing conflicts with Iran, and the U.S, they refused to comply with the unconditional surrender to the U.N. forces and allow unrestricted access to sites that the U.N. inspectors wanted to see.
There was basically about 8 years in which the Iraqis had to hide the chemical weapons they had been used on the Kurds wiping out 10's of thousands of them, and the Irans thousands as well. Polish troops did find chemical weapons in Iraq. The U.N. inspectors also found e-mails as well as a paper trail confirming suspicions about chemical weapons usage, and biological weapons development.
You can say chemical weapons were not in Iraq, but in fact they were, and there were thousands of dead Kurds and Iranians to prove it in the mass graves of the victims with fatal chemical burns and bullet wounds that were plastered all over the news at the time.
This info about WMD's, inspections, Polish U.N. troops finding them in Iraq, Thousands of dead Kurds in mass graves with chemical burns and so on can be verified if you look at a reputable source.
The chemical weapons were there, that they were not is just untrue. Bash Bush for anything you want, but to bash him for that is just wrong.
The focus at this point cannot be swayed from Iran as they balance on revolution, and threaten all peace in the middle east.

This is how it works. Distract the nation and try to divide us with stories filled with accusations of racism. While behind the scenes mount as much "evidence" as possible to build the attack Iran case.

You can't educate Middle Easterners and then tell them all their knowledge has to be controlled by a handful of power freaks. There is a drive in certain human beings to control other human beings. That's not new. Rebellion against power freaks isn't either. It's the nature of all human beings to seek freedom. Control freaks want to bar doors to freedom. They do this because a world they can't control makes them feel totally debilitated from the human race.
So these Middle Eastern dictators shot themselves in their own feet. Once you educate a civilization, you hand them freedom you can't control. It's like knowing the answer to a question that's asked but being forbidden to verbalize it.
What does it matter where Syria is getting the weapons & drones from? They are using them. The USA should just keep its nose out of the Syrian unrest. Let the Arabs take care of their own problems. Look what's happened in Lybia, Iraq, and Egypt. Africa & the Arabian Peninsula is infested with Islamic extremists and will not only be the demise of Africa but many other countries throughout the world. The USA better get its act together internally and round up & deport the Islamic extremist here before its too late. Since when are Muslims some special group? Look what's happening in Europe with the Muslims, it's time to ship them all back from whence they came. The Muslims in the USA only care about making this country like all the middle-east countries religious war grounds. Wise up Americans before its too late.

I think a no-fly zone needs to be implemented. That would allow the opportunity to provide humanitarian aid.

There is a huge difference between just being Jewish and Zionism.
