The Obama administration has cut off American aid to the government of Mali after last week's coup by soldiers.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland says U.S. humanitarian and food assistance will continue for Mali's impoverished citizens.

But, she says, military aid and other funds directed to Mali's government have now been suspended.
"We have now taken a decision to suspend our assistance to the government of Mali pending a resolution of the situation on the ground," Nuland told reporters. "A little more than half of our $140 million (in aid to Mali) is food assistance, so I am expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of $60-$70 million in assistance will be suspended but we'll have better numbers for you later on."

She said the U.S. was hoping democratic governance could be restored, leading to the resumption of U.S. assistance.
Army mutineers claim they overthrew the government because it was mishandling an ethnic insurgency in northern Mali.

critical times hard to deal with, will be here.
140 million in aid to Mali. Is there any country besides those declared unfriendly that we don't send out million dollar checks?
Yes! The USA!
If the southern states succeeded from the union today do you think they would get Foreign Aid?
We should stop most of our Foreign Aid and re-label it as Domestic Aid!!!!
When will WE come together and demand changes???!!!??? Instead we look across the isle to the other side and blame them...WE need to demand more from the people we put in office and hold them accountable.
North Korea?
All this aid we are giving to other countries and we have people here that can use food. go fig.
What is there in Mali that is of National interest to the US ? A good vacation spot for a congressional junket?
We give money to those countries that pretend to have a government like ours. We try to buy friendship but it does not work. Look at Afghanistan and Iraq, it did not work there. We need the money here in America.
We should set up an International Aid Program in Africa designed to help feed Americans.
We finally got rid of one albatross. We should cut off more countries and divert funds to our Medicare program instead, then we wouldn't have problems with keeping it going.
Does anyone really think one thin dime is going to make to those in need of humanitarian aid?
How about cutting ALL foreign aid?
A$$ Clown Obama should cut off all foreign aid unless we get somthing in return.

xnavygunner and d.gabriel your are both right. I have been saying this for awhile. It would help our debt too.
I just found out that there is one country which has refused any hand out from the West or the East! That country happens to be in Africa of all the places! And that country is being bullied by the West, especially by the USA and Great Britain. Strangely enough it is doing so well that it registered 17% growth in 2011 and became the only country not to beg for food. What a proud and galant black people!
what country is that???
