Female prisoners gather in the courtyard of a women's prison in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, on Oct. 22, 2010.
Updated at 6:18 a.m. ET: KABUL, Afghanistan -- For Afghan women, the act of fleeing domestic abuse or forced prostitution may land them in jail while their abusers walk free, Human Rights Watch said in a report published Wednesday.
Running away is considered a "moral crime" for women in Afghanistan while some rape victims are also imprisoned, because sex outside marriage -- even when the woman is forced -- is considered adultery, another "moral crime."
"From the first time I came to this world my destiny was destroyed," 17-year-old Amina, who has spent months in jail after being forced into prostitution, told researchers from Human Rights Watch.
Despite progress in women's rights and freedom since the fall of the Taliban a decade ago, women throughout the country are at risk of abduction, rape, forced marriage and being traded as commodities.

It can be hard for women to escape violence at home because of huge social pressure and legal risks to stay in marriages.
"The treatment of women and girls accused of 'moral crimes' is a black eye on the face of the post-Taliban Afghan government and its international backers, all of whom promised that respect for women's rights would distinguish the new government from the Taliban," the New York-based group said.
"This situation has been further undermined by President (Hamid) Karzai's frequently changing position on women's rights. Unwilling or unable to take a consistent line against conservative forces within the country, he has often made compromises that have negatively impacted women's rights."
Teen boxer Sadaf Rahimi, who aims to compete at this summer's London Olympics, hopes her achievements will be an example to others in her war-ravaged country. NBC News' Kiko Itasaka reports.
The rights organization said that there were about 400 women and girls being held in Afghanistan for "moral crimes", and they rarely found support from authorities in a "dysfunctional criminal justice system".
'He will kill me'
The plight of a woman called Nilofar illustrates the problem. She was stabbed repeatedly with a screwdriver in the head, chest, and arms by her husband who accused her of adultery for inviting a man into the house, the rights group said.
But afterwards, she was arrested, he was not.
Afghan woman, imprisoned over rape, is free
"The way he beat her wasn't bad enough to keep him in jail. She wasn't near death, so he didn't need to be in prison," the prosecutor of the case told Human Rights Watch.
The dire treatment of women was the main reason Western countries gave for refusing to recognize the Taliban government as legitimate when it was in power.
As Afghan and Western leaders seek a negotiated end to more than 10 years of war, the future for women is uncertain.
The United States and NATO -- who are fighting an unpopular war as they prepare to pull out most combat troops by the end of 2014 -- have stressed that any settlement must ensure the constitution, which says the two sexes are equal, is upheld.
A law, passed in August 2009, supports equality for women, including criminalizing child and forced marriage, selling and buying women for marriage or for settling disputes, as well as forced self-immolation, among other acts.

But women, especially in rural areas, lack shelters to flee abuse while only one percent of police are female, according to the report based on interviews from October to November with 58 women and girls as well as prosecutors, judges, government officials and civil society.
Social stigma
The ordeal for women does not stop with jail though.
Once leaving prison, women and girls face strong social stigma in the conservative country and may be killed in so-called "honor killings".
"I just want a divorce. I can't go back to my father because he will kill me. All my family has left me behind," 20-year-old Aisha, who was sentenced to three years for fleeing an abusive husband she was forced to marry, told researchers.

Well said, Jerry--
The plight of Muslim women is irreprehensible! Too many women are treated as chattel, to be sold and/or treated as some nefarious thing to be feared, when it is mostly the men who are morally deficient. In some parts of the Muslim world, their horses are treated with more love and respect than their wives, who bear their children. What a despicable way of life! God made man and women, and together they are to be "one flesh", not man is worth more than a woman, because God made manfirst. This is not the core value of their religion which is Love! If they truly loved their wives and/or sisters they would not treat them as chattel. They turn their religious values into hypocrisy with their contempt for Gods law!
Fortunately, the National Organization of Women ( NOW ) will be leading the effort to get this rectified.
In the meantime, they are preoccupied with stopping the muslim practice of mutilating the clitoris' of young muslim girls.
They are tireless in their efforts to get meaningful reform of women's rights !
This is one of the most repulsive, sick, backward countries on the face of the earth. Why in the world we are there will always be a mystery. They are in the process of devolution and will hit bottom in the next century.
Ahhh yes, Islam, the religion of peace and tolerance. If ever a Religion should be Banned from the world, It's Islam. Those people are stone age in their thinking and will never be modernized. We should get out of that Hell Hole called Afghanistan and leave those people to their miserable lives. And our government should Quit bringing those people here to our country.
Human rights in Afghanistan? I thought they just made you wear one of those designer vests with dynamite all over it. This advocacy group must be smoking crack. It's time to get out/END THE WAR. Let them do what they want to do after that. We are not the policeman of planet earth...
And this is a country worth losing American lives over? Let's call it a day and get the troops out. As a Veteran, I am not in favor of any more wars in this God forsaken part of the world!
Right wing nuts will either blame O'bama because he hasn't pulled out of Iraq and Afganistan fast enough or because he pulled too many out too soon. The only president that can be held accountable for the Iraq or Afganistan war is the one who held office when they were invaded.
Hard to feel sorry for a country like Afghanistan.
It literally would make more sense to bomb it than to reform it...the people who run it now don't want change. They prefer to keep women under their bootheel. At least if you nuke them (and I'll probably get flamed for this) they won't suffer any more than they are now. While I certainly don't like or condone genocide, the fact is life in that country is pretty much brutal, and often short. We haven't done much better at making them a kinder, gentler people. And we've had more than 10 years to do it!
We should just cut our losses and walk away. We have tools and technology to make surgical strikes against enemy combatants, with a minimum of collateral damage and soldier casualties. We should not be in the process of nation-building unless that country is worthy of it. I'd rather put such resources in places like Japan...at least they are grateful for what help they get, and don't shoot you in the back for it!
I have to agree with you Wm (well, except for the Nuking them part). But you are right, these sadistic cavemen are not gonna change, at least not anytime soon, and Damn sure not by our hand. It is a wast of time, life and resources to remain in that warped reality. Keeping Intell in the region along w/surgical strikes IS the way to go, but get our men and women OUT NOW!!!
I for one don't want to nuke anybody...but the fact is, you can't save a society hell-bent on its own destruction. We've tried kindness, and money, and where has that got us? It's almost like the Taliban never left, and they are far from grateful. So I can kind of understand "Political Science" (the Randy Newman song). "They all hate us anyhow, so let's drop the big one now."
Maybe we have been arming the wrong people. We should arm all of the women in Afganistan. Just a thought.
Disgrace to Islam? Heck, this is a disgrace to humanity. I guess someone has to be the moron, and it appears that the Afgan's have stepped up to the plate to take the role.
The Truth is about Islam and the Islamic Male Gender Tribal rule over Islamic Female subjegation. The question to be raised should be "Where is the Islamic God in all this?". I for one would hate to be a Human Female in any Islamic Country only to be abandoned by "MY GOD" at the hands the "Imans and General Male Ignorance to Others"
If the GOP gets control, I guess us women will be asking why our GOD abandoned us.
Yes, View from the North .... I've always wondered WHY don't women in these countries leave in DROVES???? Yes, they are born into this sick, brutal, backward environment and most of them just don't know any better. And then of course there's the lack of money or resources to do so. I wish something could be done to help all these suffering women and girls. It never seems to amaze me how barbaric so many human cultures still are in this day and age.
Yes, it is difficult to try to draw comparisons between the oppression and abusive "laws" and traditions in Afghanistan and the constant push on the rights of women here in the U.S. of A.
The fact that we are farther down the road on absolute equality is great, but let's go all the way before we celebrate too much.
And let's not stop there. To only parlay for "women's rights" stops short of what we need women to do. What we really need is a world-wide rebellion of male oppression AND CONTROL. We need to get these chest-thumping self-serving "cowboys" out of power where ever they may be. I suspect a women's world-wide "absolute" sharing of power might knock some sense into these idiots and calm things down a bit.
I wonder. If you did a study that compared a country's aggression and with the lack of women's rights in that country would you find a correlation? My bet is that you would.
As a proud male I am a willing advocate for moving to absolute equality on rights and power and control for women... it might keep our out-of-control male aggression in check a little... damn it!
LMarcT--THANK YOU
Remember folks, Thursday nights in almost every Arab country is men's night down at the bath house. That's when all the men get together and have sex with each other. Of course, that's OK by Islamic law, but women can't control who they have sex with, or whether they have sex at all, unless they get permission from their husbands -- who are all down at the bath house on Thursday night. It's real. Look it up.
This article is about the treatment of women in Afghanistan. I have read posts about everything from circumcision to how Bush did nothing right. The issue is the unfair treatment of women there. I read a post on page one about Santorum, and I think it was fairly accurate. If any republican is elected in November the women in the United States can look forward to going backward. It is reprehensible for any person here to ignore the steps being taken by the GOP to thwart any woman's effort to maintain her health. The economic inequity in this country is not being addressed by either party. So, look in the mirror and see the steps being taken here to make women second class citizens. We already have a higher poverty rate than men, every ethnicity, every age, and single women with or without children. We should worry about how the future of women here is being shaped by the men in charge now. If they get the future they want, women here will have as little value as the women in Afghanistan.
Here is a little philosophy for you: If the definition of incest is held to the absolute meaning then every single male here that was delivered vaginally by his mother is guilty of incest. All of you did have your penis in her vagina at some point during the delivery. So, by that definition, every woman in Afghanistan that gave birth to a son should be imprisoned. I wonder why Rick didn't think of that yet. Freedom of religion, my A$$.
I refer to Mullah Santorum as Americas Muslim Cleric wannabe.
Is'nt great that our Government supports and funds tremendously such a moral leader in the world like Afganistan. These people are DISGUSTING. They have no sense of morality, decency or humanity. And we are funding this S**T !!! I tell you it's a mad mad mad mad world.
We need to get our men and women out of there, and cut ALL Aide to this Barbaric, Corrupt system until they get their "F"ing act together. But of course that will be far off into the future, because once we do leave the Taliban will take over again and the women will be even worse off. What a Cluster F*
When the first president Bush was gung ho about starting the " Desert Storm War, I heard the same things about the Saudi, and Kuwait women not having any rights. So Bush used women's lack of rights as one justification for going to war. But after the war, guess what? The women did not have any rights in the male regimes, and they still do not have any. Then Bush the second used the Taliban's murderous treatment of women, and girls, as one justification for going to war against Afghanistan.
We have our own brand of the Taliban here. They are more subtle and do not brandish whips, other than their own machismo power, but they may be be just as dangerous. So we cannot exclude the religious nuts here either, who interpret Christian rule of law to suit themselves. As a result we have some religious and not so religious males, who are hell bent, it seems, to control women as if the women were cattle on a breeding farm. One just wishes that all of those religious war mongers, and women's behaviour controllers, would just turn their spears on themselves, and stop the problem where it started. Then maybe the world would be rid of inhumane treatment entirely. That could benefit all of humankind.
I have wondered for a long time, if morality is such an issue for men around the world why is there no criminal background check for men that are seeking a prescription for Viagra? If the morals of women that use birth control of almost any kind is an issue, why are not men questioned about that too? I wonder if the men of Afghanistan have access to that while the women there are denied rights of every kind.
These back arsewards idiotic countries and religious groups and people that dont let women live free and equal are ridiculous,,, that said, I hope enough women here in the USA grab ahold of their constitutional rights and arm themselves so that they can keep their hard earned freedoms and rights, there are still many in our government today and who want to be in our government today who want to push womens rights back to the dark ages with regards to abortion and contraception, etc,,, women are strong and smart and capable of everything and more perhaps than any man and have every right to expect full equality, anything less should be met with the same wrath that any other liberty excercising human being here in the USA would demand, Stan up and never let anyone tell you no. you have control of your life and your body, and you have the first and second amendment to be able to vocalize and preserve your freedoms.. Religious pricks and politicians have no right to dictate what you are able to do with regards to your body and your life,,,
400 Women in jail for morals crimes? Sounds to me like they equal about 1 heavy Company of Infantry. We should be training them in the use of fire arms and hand to hand fighting, right after morning lessons on how to read.
I have said for years that we need ONLY to support those that want to work with us and let them lose on their dipstick fathers, brothers and war lords. If you are going to fight a war, fight it like you want to win.
Regardless of how right or wrong these activities are, one nation cannot impose it's ideology on another, unless our intention is permanent occupation. So far neither side seems concerned over the opinion of it's population. As a population, we had to take freedom from the brits, it wasn't handed over willingly. If that's what Afghanistan wants, they need to do it for themselves. You can lead a horse to water, but can't make him drink.
Yet another sign of a corrupt, aggressive and malignant religion. No peace for the believer, no happiness, just life under the control of another person. It is truly sad and shameful.
With this happening in these countries, why am I not surprised that the people in the civilized world are letting these people invade and take over. We in our country have a Muslim leaning President. I wonder how he would feel if his wife and daughters were forced to live by the Muslim barbaric "Sharia Law".
We were originally in Afghanistan for a legitimate reason, They were sheltering Bin Ladin. We should have focused on him, got him and got out. Bush made his mistake getting side tracked by Hussein.
I truly fear what will happen to the women and children over there once we are gone. Not that we have really done anything for them except make there life more dangerous by giving them hope. We are not allowed to do anything over there to protect them. I would have a hard time not killing the murderers stoning a woman or girl to death. Our troops cannot lift a hand to defend any one no matter how barbaric the act is. You can see why some of our troops lose it.
Not only are they fighting an enemy without a face, but, they constantly have to watch their backs because our "Afghan friends" in uniform are likely to shoot them in the back.
This story proves the middle east is a terrible repressive culture with an even more worthless, unfair, bigoted religion. Too bad islam is growing fast in the US. We'll have our share of these stories within our borders soon enough.
To see how bad it is already here in the US, look up Honor Killings (DIS-HONORABLE MURDERS) in the United States.
Twice as many mosques in the US now vs. before 9/11.
Afghanistan seems to be the most backward country in the world, its government corrupt and its people ruled by insane religous zealotness. Until its government and people embrace justice and religious balance with basic human behaviour, all the evil heaped on them will not sway my sympathies towards them. Afghan people who emigrate to Canada often practise their brand of justice in Canada (honour killings). Please look up Shafia murders in Canada.
