Gang-raped, strangled and set on fire: Teen dies in Ukraine hospital

This YouTube video was uploaded by the Oksana Makar's mother. It has been reported that the 18-year-old calls for her attackers to be castrated.

A teen who prosecutors say was gang-raped, strangled and then set on fire has died, a hospital official said on Thursday. Oksana Makar's case sparked public protests in Ukraine.

Hundreds of people took to the streets earlier this month after police released two of 18-year-old Makar's three suspected attackers. Their parents reportedly had political connections and the move re-ignited a public debate on corruption in the ex-Soviet republic.

Makar's plight gained further attention when her mother, Tetyana Surovitska, encouraged her to describe the ordeal in a video clip uploaded to YouTube.

In the video Makar calls for her attackers to be castrated and imprisoned, according to local English language newspaper Kyiv Post. It named the suspects as Yevhen Krasnoschek, 23; Maksym Prisyazhnyuk, 24; and Artem Pogosyan, 22.

The three were arrested, but two -- whose parents had political connections -- were released without charge. They were re-arrested after the intervention of President Viktor Yanukovich who sent an investigating team to the town of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine.

'Her heart activity stopped'
Interior Minister Vitaly Zakharchenko confirmed earlier this month that the parents of at least one of the three suspects were former government officials in the Mykolaiv region.

"Lung bleeding began and then her heart activity stopped," said Emil Fistal, head of the specialist burns unit whre Makar was taken for treatment. "We tried three times to revive her with defribillation."

According to local media reports, Makar met two of the three accused in a bar on March 10. After spending some time there with them, she went to the apartment of the third.

The reports say she was then raped and one of the suspected attackers tried to strangle her with a cord. They subsequently wrapped her in a blanket, took her to a pit on a building site and tried to set her body on fire before escaping.

She was found by a passing motorist and taken to hospital with serious burns. She had both feet and an arm amputated in surgery, according to the reports.

The Kyiv Post also published what it said was leaked video of one of the three suspects’ interrogation.

In that clip, the suspect, apparently Krasnoschek, said he was only trying to burn a pillowcase they had accidentally taken with them.

After disposing of Makar, the three suspects went to the supermarket to buy more vodka and, after that, stopped at a street kiosk for tea.

The BBC reported there have been several protests in Mykolaiv and elsewhere in Ukraine, including Odessa and Kharkiv, about the case and its handling by authorities.

So it don't only happen in the U.S., those with money and power can walk away from anything. Those of us with less better be willing to cop a plea bargain so we don't spend years in the prison system.

Perhaps an accident on the keyboard- are you saying that you feel sorry that poor people can't get away with acting like animals too? I'm also disgusted that the rich and connected are being treated lightly. But I don't feel sorry for poor people convicted of heinous crimes going to jail.

It's impossible to fathom what goes on in the depraved minds of criminals like this and it's even more disturbing what goes on in the minds of those who let them off the hook for their total lack of a human spirit. Animals don't even act like this.

This BS would lessen, if, after trial and if found guilty, the guilty would suffer the identical fate of their victims! Of course, the wealthy/ privilage still may avoid trial, as seems may happen here.

If anything close to this would happened to my daughter, I would sacrifice my life to see that I had revenge with similar actions as theirs, brought on to them!

wahoo, evil like this has been happening to women and girls since the dawn of civilization. It's astonishing that females have anything to do with males, and many would be better off if they didn't. Men do these things, and men ought handle those among their gender who do these things to the most vulnerable. But they don't.

littlechanges - we do handle it believe me, we do. Just because we don't publicly slit the POS's throat on the step of the White House doesn't mean we don't deal with them. Yes, more men could take action and too many remain silent when they have knowledge of it but then again how are we to know when women don't say a single word either.

Now, why are you singling out women as the only victims of crimes like this? You do understand men can be raped also, right? Well, at least recently we can - before that it's been called everything under the sun except rape. On top of that nobody really gives a damn when a guy is the victim and most are to embarrassed to say something.

Acts like this are horrible beyond words. Having been deployed my share of times I expect this to happen in 3rd world and very secular regions, however that still doesn't make it ok. To happen in more developed ares that claim to be civilized this is beyond reprieve. It's not one gender that needs to deal with wastes of air like this - it's society that does. Society allows this scum to continually suck resources from us and since we all have our coward suits on all the time now we feel as though we should release them. Where I live the law was recently changed and forcible rape offenders can be removed off the sex offenders registry after 20 years. Just so you know - there are women in office that voted for this. So it's not just men.

The prison culture in former USSR is such that rapists not only might, but must be gang-raped by cellmates on the first day of imprisonment - that's the requirement of the unwritten criminal code of honor. Thereafter, they are required to cater to sexual needs of other prisoners, whenever and however somebody might have a wish for, for the duration of the term, and whenever they are imprisoned for other crimes in the future. The ones that attempt to keep their crime secret, or refuse to provide sexual favors, are severely beaten, usually to death. Serves them right.

Folks in the US: In the Martin case apparently Mr. Zimmerman was arrested by the police but then when the case got to the higher ups they were told to release him. Wakehead: "the rule of law" is EXACTLY what protects these people. There is no such thing as justice in the courtroom. If that is what people are looking for they will not find it. When cases reach the legal arena it then becomes jousting between prosecutors and defense attorneys. This is a money thing (even if it is pro-bono as I'm sure there will be great squeals of 'no') and a 'notch in their gun' so-to-speak. ANYTIME there is a question look at the Casey Anthony case. There was absolutely no justice on any side there. The little victim never got any justice. The rest of the circus, from the judge, jury, and attorneys and the media, had their jollies whether it was money or power they never even entertained the idea of justice! Do NOT expect it here either. In the courtroom ONLY the 'rule of law' and the 'system' are protected and followed, NOT THE PURSUIT OF JUSTICE in ANY form!

You are correct. Maybe gun sales are way up because people don't believe the police can protect them any longer.

Guns sales are up because fear is up because gun sales are up because fear... get it? Add the false fears from the NRA political puppeteers and you have a perfect profit-making machine.

And we think it perfectly cool to put someone with violence in their record as a neighborhood watch block captain while packing a gun and emboldened by a "stand your ground" law. Think about how f*cking stupid that is. Maybe just pause a second or two... it'll come to you...

Put the above into play, add a young kid in a hoody, and subconscious and irrational fears pop up and BANG!, we have a young man dead on the ground... then we walk away with blood on our hands, ignoring all indications that something is terribly wrong.

We can criticize Zimmerman all day long for those subconscious and irrational fears, but they exist in us all in some form. Realizing this, we need to focus even more on how we let anyone, let alone Zimmerman, find their way to that situation.

Well last October I recieved this tid bit from a friend whose grand son is studying in Perth, Austrailia. This grandma did something about it, maybe we need to send her to the Ukraine.

Gun-toting granny Ava Estelle, 81, was so ticked-off when
two thugs raped her 18-year-old granddaughter that she tracked the
unsuspecting ex-cons down... And shot off their testicles.

"The old lady spent a week hunting those men down and,
when she found them, she took revenge on them in her own special
way," said Melbourne police investigator Evan Delp.

Then she took a taxi to the nearest police station, laid the
gun on the sergeant's desk, and told him as calmly as she could,
"Those bastards will never rape anybody again, by God."

Cops say convicted rapist and robber Davis Furth, 33, lost
both his penis and his testicles when outraged Ava opened fire
with a 9-mm pistol in the hotel room where he and former
prison cell mate, Stanley Thomas, 29, were holed up.

The wrinkled avenger also blew Thomas' testicles to kingdom
come, but doctors managed to save his mangled penis, police said. "The one
guy, Thomas, didn't lose his manhood, but the doctor I talked to said
he won't be using it the way he used to," Detective Delp told
reporters. "Both men are still in pretty bad shape, but I think
they're just happy to be alive after what they've been through."

The Rambo Granny swung into action August 21 after her
granddaughter Debbie was carjacked and raped in broad daylight by two
knife-wielding creeps in a section of town bordering on skid row.
"When I saw the look on my Debbie's face that night in
the hospital, I decided I was going to go out and get those bastards
myself 'cause I figured the Law would go easy on them,” recalled the
          retired library worker.

"And I wasn't scared of them, either - because I've got
me a gun and I've been shootin' all my life. And I wasn't dumb
enough to turn it in when the law changed about owning one."

So, using a police artist's sketch of the suspects and
Debbie's description of the sickos, tough-as-nails Ava spent seven days
prowling the wino-infested neighborhood where the crime took place till she
spotted the ill-fated rapists entering their flophouse hotel.

"I knew it was them the minute I saw 'em, but I shot a
picture of 'em anyway and took it back to Debbie and she said sure as
hell, it was them," the oldster recalled...

"So I went back to that hotel and found their room and
knocked on the door, and the minute the big one opened the door,
I shot 'em right square between the legs, right where it would really
hurt 'em most, you know. Then I went in and shot the other one as
he backed up, pleading to me to spare him.

Then I went down to the police station and turned myself in."

Now, baffled lawmen are trying to figure out exactly how to
deal with the vigilante granny. "What she did, was wrong, and she
broke the law, but it is difficult to throw an 81-year-old woman in
prison," Det. Delp said, "especially when 3 million people in
the city want to nominate her for Mayor."

The last thing we need is more vigilante justice. We need to have better laws that apply to everyone no matter how connected they are or how much money they have. That's been the problem all along. It sure doesn't help to have lawmakers who seem to have forgotten what honesty and integrity mean, does it?

Come on raped her, then set her on fire , she loses limps and then dies, this is clearly a case of evil people who should not get away with this no matter what class they come from, don't let these animals get away with this!

what bothers me is these people have the ability to do this to another human being, and then after they are done? they go have tea. the sheer disregard for human life bordering on (or even passing into) sociopathy chills my blood. things posing as human beings such as these need to be removed from existence.

What a shame for the poor young lady to have died. Her parents must be so very upset. What a horrible ordeal for her to endure. Can you imagine what she went through? And please don't say her morals were bad and that she brought it on herself. That is a horrible fate to have to go through. How frightening. And such a beautiful young women to have her life snuffed out "like a candle in the wind."

The argument is about having your healthcare provider pay for it. Your healthcare provider. The one you already pay to provide you with healthcare.

Raymond, Santorum Country is that mythical theocracy ruled by the Ayatollah Santorumeni, where women are subservient to their boss man husband, don't need either an education or birth control because their only goal in life is to worship their spouse, and have a baby per year.

Communism has always been a lie. It is corruption masked by a philosophical sham, failing to realize that "absolute power corrupts absolutely."

While Communism has "died," the former Communist countries are now run by pure corruption.

The rights of the American citizen have eroded. This is partly evident in the erosion of the middle class. (By middle class, I do not mean those in the leisure classes who just might not be able to buy every single little thing that they desire.)

Unfortunately around the world, women are not treated as equals to men. Hell, we're not even getting equal pay for equal work here in the good ole USA. John Lennin said it best: "woman is the @!$%# of the world".

You rock Eileen! Hit the nail right on the head. Unfortunately in this "real world" of ours, this is absolutely true. We think here in the states that we're equal, but it's a farce. We are not equal. Never has been. Never will be.

We can scream and stomp all we like, but our male peers just look down on us and laugh at us. they can't kill us like they do in other countries, but they kill our spirits. That's just as bad as being stoned, etc.

Actually, I would love to have them all in prison just long enough for them to suffer like she did ( gang raped) and setting all 3 on fire - but wait just a small fire so their hands and feet will have to be removed due to the burns. Yep that's what I would like.

Actually, christine, Ryan was right. This is how they originally had the caption on the video:

This YouTube video was uploaded by the Oksana Makar's mother. It has been reported that the 18-year-old calls for her victims to be castrated.

But for some reason, they deleted Ryan's comment calling them out on it. It was probably an honest typo, but there was no need to go deleting a comment that was in no way offensive and did nothing other than point out an error by msnbc staff, other than to save face.

That was in poor taste to delete Ryan's post. Poor taste indeed.

What a tragedy. They took turns using her and then disposed of her like garbage. Then back to drinking! The most disturbing aspect of this to me is the sociopathic behaviors exhibited by 3 men together. It's almost like they were a pack of wolves hunting together. They so casually went about their day after. This makes me think that this wasn't the first time they committed crimes like these, either together or alone.

There is a movie called "Voroshilovskiy strelok" (Voroshilowskiy sniper" if translated ), the grandfather of one gang raped girl did just that, he was sniper during World War II , he took sniper gun, and shoot those guys eggs off one my one. Very good movie (encouraging).
