Israeli forces fire tear gas at Palestinians as Land Day turns violent

People carry an injured Palestinian protester during clashes with Israeli security forces at a demonstration marking Land Day at Qalandiya checkpoint, near Ramallah, Friday.

Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades to break up groups of Palestinian stone-throwers on Friday as annual Land Day rallies turned violent.

Palestinian activists have called for a "Global March to Jerusalem" to mark the day when Israeli Arabs protest against government policies that they say has stripped them of land.

Arab news channel Al Jazeera reported in a live blog on its website that the Israeli army was "pushing protesters back towards Ramallah with the use of tear gas and water cannons".

It also reported that there are close to 1,000 protestors gathered in Ramallah.

Israeli forces were put on high alert at frontier crossings with Lebanon and Syria but there were no reports of any protesters nearing the border fences, unlike last year when several demonstrators were killed there in Land Day protests.

However, violence flared at checkpoints in the occupied West Bank to the north and south of Jerusalem. Witnesses also reported disturbances at gates leading into the Old City, with police looking to limit access to the revered al-Aqsa Mosque.

Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades to break up groups of Palestinian stone-throwers as annual Land Day rallies turned violent. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

A Reuters reporter saw two men being carried away injured after scuffles at Jerusalem's Lions' Gate, while police said they had made several arrests at the nearby Damascus Gate.

Jerusalem is a focal point of conflict, as Palestinians want the city's eastern sector, captured by Israel in a 1967 war, as capital of a future state. Israel has annexed East Jerusalem as part of its capital and insists the city remain united.

"We are determined to march together toward Jerusalem, and hopefully we will break through and reach it," said a masked youth, calling himself Rimawi, as he faced off against soldiers in the West Bank city Ramallah, a short distance from Jerusalem.

Flag-waving crowds neared the Qalandiya crossing out of Ramallah, some of them hurling stones at the security forces, but were forced back when border police sprayed them with foul-smelling liquid from a water cannon.

Land Day commemorates the killing by security forces of six Arabs in 1976 during protests against government plans to confiscate land in northern Israel's Galilee region.

Arabs make up about a fifth of Israel's total population. Many complain of discrimination. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently called for improved efforts to integrate Arab citizens into Israel's work force.

These people live on ONLY 25% of the land they were granted by the US and UN and you Blame them for Protesting?!

Unfortunately, The Israeli Experiment has gone the way of Orthodoxy and then we blame the Palestinians?

Perhaps Mr. Callaghan can start a NEW Petition?

HAnk they live on only 25% of the land they were granted because Syria and Egypt reneged and didn't give them the land they agreed to in 1948.

In an act of paramount antisemitism, the US and Britain conspired to create Israel so as to keep waves of Jews from immigrating to their shores. Believing they could summarily seize Palestine from the powerless Palestinians, they did so. Thus we have the problem of the Middle East. An illegitimate state being propped up by a superpower, who behaves like a spoiled little brother who can abuse it's neighbors because they believe they're some kind of "chosen people" What a bunch of bull. Israel is the biggest thug, terrorist state in the region, imposing apartheid on the Palestinians, expecting the world to be sympathetic because of the holocaust.

Britan conspired with Arabs to keep Jews out of Judea. The Creation of Israel did nothing to change Jewish immegration. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were thrown out of Arab States. The USA and Israel absorbed all of them. Many as a result are 100% Jew-free. Theres some apartheid for yah.....Arabs are STILL imprisoned in refugee cities such as Jordan (where Britain enabled the creation of Jordan to expell all the Jews there) where the Hasemite minority(20%) oppresses the Palestinian Majority(80%) in the homeland created for them.

More Palestinians who think they can get back what they lost because they attacked and lost. Billions have been sent in aid to them and parts of this money has funded terrorist activities. Kidnappings murder all continue but God forbid the Jewish people fight back. Hey they should just lie down and take it like they did during Hitler's assault against them.

Yes, Palestinians throwing rocks and molotov cocktails in an effort to combat an occupation is exactly the same as Nazis gassing defenseless women and children. Brilliant.

What was originally promised which included far more land than what they were given and yet the Jews were prepared to go though with the revised land allocation. Instead they were attacked from the beginning. From the beginning the Jewish people had to fight for their homeland and contrary to what you think they did not leave and forfeit the land. Not everyone thinks they have no right to be there. The analogy you present is not what I presented and shows manipulation common of those who seek gain through deception. Innocent children and women on both sides have died because the Palestinians did not want to accept the land allocation.

FFF-"Innocent children and women on both sides have died because the Palestinians did not want to accept the land allocation."

Yes,70% of the age old native population,at that time, didn't want to accept 56% of the land going to foreign immigrants.Who had mostly been there, for at the longest 20 years. While they would be left a split state of 44% of the land. And that deal decreed by a UN that was almost all American or European controlled,on a guilt trip because of the Nazi crimes against the Jews. Wow, I can't imagine why they wouldn't want that. To pay with their country for the sins of others. Just so Americans and Europeans could salve their guilty consciences.Who would not agree to that. Micro survivability by building a fence to keep the majorities out while you enslave 1/5 th of the Arabs. Once they cross the fence and tear it down what can they do kill them all ?. define zionism ! Guns vs people marching in peace who will win. In this case Israel is out numbered ten to one. No brainer.

Blah Blah Blah Blah. Let's get to the point. What is the expectation here? Is the thinking that the Palestinians should go back to their ghetto prison and just be happy living in those conditions while Israel builds settlements that more and more encroach on their territory?

It should be obvious that this is an untenable situation. No one reading this would agree to live under those conditions.

It just concerns me that a large majority of people in this country are ok with treating a large group of people like animals.

Since Israel will never honestly negotiate towards a 2 state solution, that idea is dead. They want the land, then they must give civil rights to the Palestinians. One man,one vote. The same as in apartheid South Africa. In the 21th century, there is no room for an apartheid racist system. If the Zionists want to defend racism to world opinion they are free to. But the Palestinian need to demand their human rights and they will gain the support of the world.

Since Israel and the Palestinians consistently act like two 10 year-olds on a playground, they have demonstrated that they are incapable of resolving their conflict

Thus, since the UN created Israel out of whole cloth, the UN should create a Palestinian nation out of whole cloth

And if neither party likes the UN resloution, then tough s**t

Any violation of the terms should be dealt with severely and harshly.......over time both parties would get over it and adjust or get wiped out

Don't fool yourselves my fellow westerners, Israel is at war with the Palestinians and there is no middle ground. The Palestinians want Israel for themselves and will do anything they can to accomplish this goal. The palestinians are a proxiy for the rest of the Islamists Remember, it was the Arab islamists who blew up the WTC and it was the Algerian-French Islamists in the most recent attack in France who murdered slodiers and children.. The west is at war with islam and we westerners need to recognize that. The war may be bullets etc, but it is propaganda and misinformation used to change our minds. This is no different that the second world war. It is them against our way of life.

Since when is Israel a western nation. No western nation treats its minorities the way Israel does. No western state pretends to be a democracy while running an apartheid system in their country. No western state claims it is only the state of one part of its citizens. Israel is many things. But a western state is not one of them.

Never Israel responds to rockets launched, or Israel responds to terrorists with bomb crossing border. How many rockets were launched at Israel? And how many rockets would OTHER countries put up with? This is hypocrisy at its finest.

The Palestinians didn't 'come from Jordan.' They have always lived on that land, they are the original 'Christians' who followed the path of the leader named Jesus. Jesus did not speak in their temples but spoke out that 'religion' corrupts.... Palestinians turned away from the corruption committed by jews in the name of God. Jesus did not call himself a 'christian' but was identified by the romans as a 'jew' simply because he was born there. Jesus did not condone religion and the jewish religion was the basis of his argument against these 'boys clubs' which perpetuated 2nd class citizenship for women and death for non members.

It is the 'religious' jews who have ostrasized themselves from every country they inhabit simply by creating their secular 'boys club' where ever they go. Plus, you can only belong to if yo mama does. Jews never got the 'when in Rome' smarts because they think they are smarter then everyone else. Their complete human to human discrimination always backfires on them because they end up being elitist bullies.

They are all 'born of Jerusalum.' To identify as Jewish 2500 years later is to identify to the 'man/men-made' religion, not the LAND. I'd imagine more than 6 million people have been killed since 1947 and the jewish invasion of Palestine. Again, they've got nothing on Hitler, that's a cake walk compared to what they have done in the middle east and the length of time they've been doing it. What they did to the Palestinian Aid Ships last year sealed that dislike and showed their inhumanity. This isn't Jews against Muslims, this is Jews being backed by US Jews and Evangical Fanatics against Palestinian Christians being backed by Muslims. The interloper here is the Jewish religion and attempting to pretend that people who occupied the land for the most recent 2000 years up until 1948 'came from somewhere else.' The audacity is glaring. Hollywood does not make a country.

This news source is so skewed. It starts out by saying Palestinians are tear gassed. Then it says Israel fires rubber bullets. And finally it gets to the heart of the matter - IN RESPONSE to Palestinian rock and Molotov cocktail throwing. How about this headline? Israel took the land about 62 years ago. Maps from then say nothing about Israel. The Catholic church only recognized that "country" in the last 20 years. Kuwait was cut from Iraq. Uruguay was cut from Brazil and Israel was cut from Palestine. I don't care if the Jews think it's their born right to be there but there was already someone there. Israel can't get along with any of its neighbors and yet they're the richest since they're our #1 foreign aid recipient. At a time when our economy is struggling, we need to stop pumping money and support into a country that has done what for us???? Nothing. Solidarity is a word and it doesn't help me or any other American. They need to learn to live with all their neighbors instead of whining as the victim and killing Arabs who never left their homelands. How dare they kill Arabs and act innocent and the victim. They're arrogant, insensitive and have been kicked out of most European countries and their own so called "homeland" but everyone else is wrong. Go figure....... Keep sending our tax dollars there as we get attacked for our wonderful "solidarity" with that spoiled child nation. The British owned Palestine and won fair and square...... I'm glad I didn't go to Rache's school. No google website listed for this erroneous information as well as any of the Quran quotes either. There are sections in the Quran just like the bible. I don't see any listed here. The Quran is still in its original language (Arabic) and English translations are questionable especially for those who are interpreting literally. Actually, historically the word that we translate "Palestine" in English was probably first used by Herodotus in the 5th century BC (actually "the Palestinian region of Syria"), and for the first 1,100 years it was used, was used to refer to the general area occupied by predominantly Hebrew (or Jewish) peoples that existed in the area at that time. Emperor Hadrian later officially renamed the Jewish states of Judea and Gallilee to "Syria Palaestina" in the second century AD, again ironically referring to a predominantly Jewish state. The Arabs then conquered the region in the 7th century. If one prefers more modern history, the British Mandate referred to "Palestine" as the regions currently including modern day Israel, the Palestinian Territories, and Jordan. At that time none of those nations were officially recognized...one of the biggest mistakes was cutting out a huge portion of what I will call "British Mandate Palestine" and renaming it "Transjordan" which would later become just Jordan. Essentially, most of the large region which has historically (and as recently as the British Mandate) been referred to as "Palestine" is now divided up and renamed as Israel , Syria, parts of Lebanon, and all of Jordan.

I always find it quite interesting that the Arabs only focus on the (relatively) tiny part of the large Region of Palestine that is now called "Israel" and ignore the >90% of historical Palestine that is now called Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan - all of which are (apparently) also refusing to give land and support back to the Palestinian people. The Arabs are actually denying the Palestinian people much more than the Israelis...it's so clearly agenda-driven and anti-Israel...why not focus on the bigger parts of old Palestine?

That's a common Zionist argument. The easy answer is,that "the Holy Roman Empire" used to include Germany,Netherlands,Czech Republic,Belgium,Austria, etc, too. But when those nations formed out of it.Then they became separate states,no longer grouped as one. Why would people from another country be expected to give land to another people, expelled from their homeland. While the thieves that stole the land get to keep it. If a foreign group seized New England and expelled the people there into Canada.Would you be saying "those bad Canadians, why don't they just settle those New Englander's on their land and be happy about it".

Freedom4Everyone, your type of freedom is call CHAOS. You should read some history of the country that you occupy now and then read some World History.

I can see our politicians on their knees outside your front door begging and crying for your support and forgiveness.

And on a side note... they'd wind up nuking themselves too.

But it's nice to know you support "actual" genocide, as opposed to the fake genocide that msn posters claim is happening to the Palestinian people... (you know... with rising populations and all) it says a lot about your character.

I am a life long student of history. Just because I don't support Israels persecution of Palestinians, does not mean im uneducated or unaware of all the politics involved. In fact it is because of my education, which is rather extensive I might add, that I don't support Israel.

You are clearly myopic in your view, and only see Israels position. I see everyone's position. I dont side with anyone over another.

And I don't support genocide, I support an even playing field. I know they would nuke themselves, same as Israel would nuke itself, same as Iran would nuke itself. However, by them having a nuke, no longer could Israel or the US push them around. This is why I don't fear, at all, Iran getting a nuke. They cant use it unless they wish to commit suicide. But it would make everyone else respect them and leave them alone.

M.A.D. Mutually Assured Destruction, it works.

Oh, and considering how few people actually do vote, politicians would be wise to listen to those of us who actually do.

To Freedom4Everyone, you should be call Chaos4Everyone.

I also vote Democrat, Independent or Republican. Never considered Libertarian, obviously you would be voting for Ron Paul. If you give Iran a nuke and they do use it, it would be to late for respect and any suicide. It is also obvious you did not read correctly, since I never said you were uneducated. Relax and take the rest of the weekend off, Buddie.

I've always wondered just how stupid you have to be to throw rocks at armed soldiers or police. And you expect what result?
