The Great Pyramids of Giza are one of the most iconic images in the world, but 19 miles south of modern-day Cairo lies the Saqqara plateau, Egypt’s oldest pyramid complex.
Follow NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel to Egypt, where he journeys through a network of underground tunnels beneath the Step Pyramid of Djoser.

I was inside in 1999 - my guide and I slipped in unnoticed and technically illegally, before debris was cleared and the scaffolding and temp plywood flooring was placed above the tunnels. We didn't have access to the tunnels, but to the space above where the passageway was clogged with collapsed wooden beams and blocks. We went a short distance with flashlights until further progress became too risky. But training a flashlight upward we could see that the support beams ran high up into the pyramid, apparently acting as braces as each original block was put in place.
That's certainly why there's a complex of tunnels UNDER the Pyramid: unlike the later Three Great Pyramids at Giza, the Step Pyramid above-ground interior is not where passageways lead to tombs!
The architect, Imhotep, was also a doctor who compiled a great treatise of medical knowledge and was one of the most brilliant men who ever lived. His name belongs in the same league as people like Isaac Newton, Galileo, and Einstein.
In all Muslim ruled countries in Middle East or in Asia, this tunnel network exists & was built by Islamic Kings even India. It is a greatst danger to public life as these tunnels never used by later occupiers or rulers have not be commissioned or collpse material removed & are almost abandoned but a shelter to terror groups for existence, transportation & communications.Even Pakistan & India are linked with tunnels in historical Mugal Gardens & Forts.
When culture has become a danger to public life, one must consider what has become of public life.
The pyramids were built about 2500 BC,The muslim religion started about 600 AD,so I don't think Islamic kings built these.
Amarajit,
I expected nothing more from you..........................what is it? you guys have 52 Gods ???????
Amarajit said nothing against Muslims just that the tunnels were a safety hazard, which I'm sure is probably true.
Why are you bringing religion into this? It has nothing to do with it. Don't be unnecessarily rude.
Great piece, I look forward to more episodes!
I've been spelunking since I was young (55 now) and would kill to go through those tunnels myself and hopefully I will live long enough for that region to settle down so it's safe to go there (not holding my breath on that one though) .
Interesting how the story about achieving the afterlife went , can't help but wonder who came up with the whole test series idea through man made tunnels to achieve the afterlife was . Through all my college studies on archeology thru to ancient civilizations you can see how the religious ideology changed over the years and how in some cases blended together (egypt is where the ancient jews got the afterlife idea from) .
I hope to see more episodes from Hidden Planet .
Adwaup,
Where do you get that Jews and the afterlife thing? Judaism says little about an afterlife it is a philosophy for living life in the here and now. References to an afterlife or a rising from the dead most likely are Hellenic in origin and several centuries post pyramid building.

Imhotep is considered to be the first architect, engineer, mathematician and physician in early history. He also constructed the first pyramid as mention in the video. Many consider him to be the world's first multi-genus, and one of the greatest Africans that ever lived. He is truly one of the greatest contributors of anceint civilization and his story should be included in American history books.
BDA..
"his story should be included in American history books."
No, his story should be included in World History Books. American history is supposed to be abut America.
I learned about this in the 60's and people are thinking that it should be in books today? What!
Has what passes for education regressed so far that the teachers are too stupid and uneducated to teach? Or is it that students; aren't!
Why is it that I've been told where the kids smoke pot at the local high School, however, I've never heard about an interesting class there?
Why is it that a history show about this would have two or three million viewers, and a reality show that has some dummy screaming at a camera-man that they can't get through a door, has twenty-five million viewers?
Now, there's an area that would write an entire history changing. The story of America and Americans; who we were, and who we have become.
Wouldn't be popular though!
