Muslim Brotherhood says it will run candidate for president in Egypt election

CAIRO -- Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood has announced it will field its own candidate for Egypt's presidential election on May 23.

The announcement of Khairat al Shater's selection by the Brotherhood's executive committee is a significant departure for the group, which initially vowed it would not field a candidate from within the organization. The Muslim Brotherhood's political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party, already controls nearly half of parliament.

Before he can run, Shater must win the endorsement of 30 members of parliament (he will easily do that). But he will also need a pardon from the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to overturn a previous conviction. During Hosni Mubarak's decades-long rule, Shater was imprisoned for several years more than once. A popular uprising forced Mubarak to resign in February 2011.

Shater is considered the architect of the Muslim Brotherhood's political emergence in recent years and often credited for coming up with many of the movement's policies. Shater, a millionaire businessman, also controls the group's finances.

The Muslim Brotherhood decision will certainly ring alarm bells in Washington and has already angered many in Egypt who have been warning that the Brotherhood is slowly attempting to take over all aspects of political life, including parliament, local councils, the constitutional committee and now the presidency.

Wow...the ignorance of some of the people on this site. You can't have both free elections and always get who you want elected. Countries will elect the wrong people who take away freedoms (see GW Bush).

Huh? I thought it's been working out rather well in Chicago over the last 100 years......isn't that what voter fraud is all about?

As long as the Egyptians buy their new voting machines from the CIA everything will work out just fine.....

well, what did we expect??. "sincerity"?? bwa ha ha,, any "revolution" that instantly removes 1/2 of its people from the roster is doomed! to ignominious failure,[not to mention repeating the failures of the past over and over],"brotherhood"??.. whats wrong with this word??..anyone??..for all their "quacking" about brotherhood?? they cant even get that!! together and make it work, and they want to run a country??..as for so called "religions"??.. weeeel,, I am pretty sure god agree,s with the above, and it is no accident that all the "books" tell people that harming others is the work of evil,..so few people can even keep their own life together, there and here,,, and yet, they want to rule over others, with predictible results I might add,..never mind the "stance" in play, that is all smoke and mirrors,, what about THE PEOPLE??..anyone ask them??.. no??.. perhaps we should, eh?..these days, this can! be done,,, and any new so called "leaders" that do not take this into acct? will fail,,again!,still, whatever!!,..When! Africa becomes a country, states become provinces, central GOV is in play[at last!!],and these old school plays from the far distant past are seen for what they are..."plays", no more,..then it is time to applaud,,,I wonder sometimes, what is it exactly that makes some people crave power so badly they will harm others to gain it?.. and dont they know that by doing so? they are joining the forces of evil? corruption? and that age old evil presence that seems to be rampant at all hot spots??..apperantly?? whatever it is? they crave so badly. it is powerfull enough for them to LIE TO THEMSELVES!,..how that works is not really known at this time,, how do you lie to yourself?? psychopaths seem to do it at the drop of a hat and think nothing of it either,,and there is the real danger,,, psychopaths network for protection, they have "secret" clubbes that support their crimes, they will and do! "infiltrate" to get at the power, and their long term plans, made in the past, are! the past!!,.. and they dont want to change that "plan" as ,truly, that is all they have, isnt it??..when! Africa wakes up and takes her true place in global awareness,, then and only then will real equality and justice prevail,,this is early days,,..ways to go yet,,,interesting to see, but not all that constructive, yet!..sometimes I do wish that "GOD" ahem? could actually speak,I can imagine what HE would say,,something like,,"shut up! get to work".. eh?, there are far far more important things than who "wins" an election, they[elections] are important, but not that! important,,human rights, womens rights, looking after the kids, the old and infirm,JUSTICE!, and real equality with no proviso,s,..these are the real important things,,"brotherhood" my aunt fanny,,, bunch of power mongers making a play, stamping on the real purposes, and using others to gain some nebulous end,.. same old same old, aint it??..truth is, no one! "owns" GOD,they are all wrong![and right at the same time as per "the elegant universe"]..no one has "the true message", and no one is acting in gods good favours when he harms others in any! way shape or fashion,, and this is why, when one creates! a military arm for whatever? purpose??.. one must make sure!! that avenues for DIS-BANDING! that army etc, are in place from the get go,,, there were very valid reasons why no army was allowed! within 300 miles of Rome,,very!!,..we should be learning from past mistakes instead of using them to attack others with vitriol and hatred,..try not to make the same mistakes, over and over,,,as we see,, that is the road to failure,, again!!..

"bunch of power mongers making a play, stamping on the real purposes, and using others to gain some nebulous end" --- You make it sound as though the people of Egypt are STUPID and don't know what's best for them. You people just can not accept anything different from YOUR WAY OF LIFE which you think is BEST but which we think is the WORST and will lead to HELL. That's the DIFFERENCE between us in a NUTSHELL.

I don't care if they turn Cairo into a smoking ruin, blow up the Aswan dam, or use the pyramids as outhouses. What happens in Egypt is a matter for Egyptians to be concerned about, not me. It's their country, and if they want to ruin it, that's fine. Just don't come looking to me for a handout when it's all over.

If right wing republicans look in the mirror they will see the muslim brotherhood looking back. No islamic takeovers no christlamic takeovers, bring back the christianity of love, of turning the other cheek, the christianity of hate is no christianity at all.

The Christianity of turning the other cheek is a naive if well meaning ticket to extinction when the enemy is dedicated to eradicating all other faiths. There is no conciliation or compromise with a faith that is based upon the idea that their God commands them to rid the world of all other faiths. You will never kill a radical Islamist with kindness.

Obama has made the world safer for radicals everywhere and trying to do for Syria what he helped them do in Egypt. Exchange one set of relatively moderate murdering tyrants for more radical murdering tyrants with new victims, the Christians and Jews in particular.

Stop sticking your nose where it doesn't belong. If they need our help they'll let us know. Why do you keep trying to impose your will on people who could care less what you think. I trust them to do what's right for their country. America is really bad at this nation building crap. We always end up with a Mubarak type who all but enslaves their nation.

I think our governments national policy is brilliant. When one is a ruler of a nation, or in the case of the US a dominating power on the world stage. There will always be strategic choices to make. Choices the citizens might object to on moral or even logical grounds. The reality is a black and white approach to the changing events of the world is not applicable when it comes to Politics and by extension war.

Dealing with "less then reputable people" or "the enemy" is a fundamental rule. Also it can not be forgotten that our own people in power have been looked upon as the "less then reputable people" or "the enemy". It's not a matter of right and wrong but a matter of perception. "The political object is the goal, war is the means of reaching it, and the means can never be considered in isolation form their purposes". Von Clausewitz

Look deeper then just the Muslim brotherhood. Start to connect ALL the dots. Try not to isolate then from the whole. Take for instance the person who sums things up by saying. "It's oil, Jews, and a re-election". That is a very vague and dangerous way to look at he world. Those things are just scenery. Just whats in the foreground. Like an iceberg there is more below the surface then above. If you want to understand where we are, you have to have an unbiased understanding of how we got here. That means understanding an event from the perspective of all those involved.

Most of all, once you have educated yourself on the subject you can have a true opinion on the matter.

AH! At Last a threat to rival the Red Tide of Communism; Military Industrialists take note. "Muslim Brotherhood" has an awfully universal sound to it, doesn't it? Their aims don't seem to be much further than those of the USSR in the last century either; the difference being that one was geo-political and the other is quasi-religious.

Look to the Taliban, Look to those nations under individual Strongmen (currently Syria) and we can see the pogroms of the Soviet State and the Final Solution of the Nazi's taking place under a different title. What a way to force the governments to invest in the Military and in The Military-Industrial Complex that Dwight Eisenhower first warned us of.

The words of the song still hold true; "When Will they WE ever learn, when will WE ever learn". And once again we've "Just been fooled again".

I don't understand why everybody thinks as if something really bad has happened.

Let the people decide, and that is what they are doing in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East.

No other political entity except western backed dictators ever had a chance to govern in the Middle East - that is why everyone is scared if MB controls Egypt, all of the sudden, there will be armed Al-Qaida members patrolling the streets of America - because we are told that they will take over the world.

Give them a chance. I am pretty sure if they are left alone, they will govern Egypt responsibly. The minute you start reacting negatively and impose sanctions on those who you don't agree with - you get Iran.

Instead of allowing a structured transition of power from Mubarek to someone else we pushed for an immediate resignation by Mubarek. The structures for open, fair elections do not suddenly appear when a dictator is gone. Now we will have to pay the price for a much more radical Egypt.

Every president, at least verbally has to support self determination. It's interesting that many of those posting here post critcism of Obama for not supporting a friendly Mubarak over a popular uprising but blame him as being weak on other posts for not confronting Assad in Syria. Just because Assad is unfriendly doesn't mean whatever replaces him won't be worse. The reality is virtually the entire population in the middle east depises us, whomever rules may act friendly for our financial support but they'll never like us.

I came up with an idea that if al-Qaida has a house or did that is in the shape of a country it maybe nuked. Osama had many houses and no one will show us them and we have found some of them, why not show us them all? The one we know is like Israel and I feel that it shows nuclear intent toward that country soon. Maybe like WW2 and it may happen when we leave Afghanistan. I wonder if destroying his Israel house was a good idea, it might of got Israel nuked later. If the rest of his houses are shown then people could see if I'm right. If they look like other countries then there might be attacks in these countries and they maybe nuclear. Because show us these other Osama houses please!
