Officer: Iran could hit US if it came under attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that international sanctions were hurting Iran's economy but not enough to persuade it to curb its nuclear ambitions even slightly.

"The Iranian government ... is having economic troubles but it has yet to move backward, even a millimeter, in its nuclear program," Netanyahu told a news conference he called to mark his right-wing government's third anniversary in power.

"Will these difficulties bring the government in Tehran to stop its nuclear program? Time will tell. I cannot say to you that this will happen. I know there are difficulties, but there has yet to be a change."

His comments came after a senior Revolutionary Guards commander was quoted as saying that the United States would not be safe from retaliation if Washington attacked Iran in an attempt to blunt its nuclear program.

"In the face of any attack, we will have a crushing response. In that case, we will not only act in the boundaries of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, no place in America will be safe from our attacks," Massoud Jazayeri was quoted as saying by the daily.

Iran would not strike any country first, he said.

On Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama vowed to press ahead with tough sanctions on Tehran, saying there was sufficient oil supply in the world market to allow countries to cut Iranian imports.

In his own remarks, Netanyahu shed no new light on how Israel might deal with what he has said is Iran's intention to build atomic weapons that could threaten the existence of the Jewish state.

Both Israel, widely believed to be the Middle East's only nuclear power, and its main ally, the United States, have held out the prospect of military action against Iran if sanctions do not work. Iran has said it is enriching uranium for peaceful purposes.

Returning to a familiar theme in Israel's discourse on Iran, Netanyahu contrasted the helplessness of Jews during the Nazi Holocaust to the military strength and diplomatic influence of the Jewish state founded after World War II.

"The Jewish people did not have these capabilities seventy, eighty ears ago. We did not have these tools. Today these tools exist, and it is our duty to use them in order to thwart the nefarious intentions of our enemies," he said, without referring directly to Iran.

A rash of public comments two months ago by Israeli officials suggesting time was running out for Israel to mount any effective military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities, some of which have been moved underground, stoked international concern.

But more recently, Israel has cautiously welcomed the planned resumption later this month of big-power nuclear talks with Iran.

"I will do all I can to fend off this danger," Netanyahu said in reference to Iran's nuclear program, "I hope we will be able to do this together with the leading players in the international community, it is a great danger to them, but first and foremost it is a danger to us."

If it does it will no doubt be because of Israel attacking Iran outright or by them continuing to kill Iranian citizens in an attempt to stop Iran's nuclear program. How hypocritical of Israel, with hundreds of nuclear bombs in its stockpile, it wants to deny another country acquiring them. No one country can be the bully on the block forever. Eventually the other countries will get the means to stand up to the bully. Isn't that what we're hearing all over this country today? Stop the bullying! Then why are we actively supporting the bully of the Middle East Israel?

Israel may have them, or they may not. Israel hasn't threatened anyone with annihilation, Iran has threatened Israel though.

They should all stop whining. The middle east is like a big pre-school full of bickering babies pointing their finger and screaming about something. I'm getting sick of it. Let them handle their own countries. If they feel Iran is really an EVIL country that would nuke Isreal and murder millions of men, women, and children and destroy milleniums of history without regard of how the rest of the entire planet would react to such a heinous act, then maybe the rest of the world should wipe them out completely right now. Actually use some of the military force each country spends the bulk of it's money on. Get it out the way so we can spend it on education, agriculture, and medicine. Why is it so hard to spend this kind of money of helping and advancing the human race as opposed to destroying and hindering the human race?

Chris, fundamentally I believe that the Palestinians should have their own, U.N. recognized nation. I believe that Israel should leave the West Bank and return to the current border. Neither Israel nor the Palestinians have to recognize each other diplomatically as long as they leave each other alone. I believe that Israel has a right to exist. Do you agree with me?

What friggin planet do you live on Mr. Gilliard. It is people like you with their ignorant heads in the sand that allows evil to perpetuate itself. So Israel should just sit back an allow their country to be annihilated by a government of madmen. Your asserion that Isreal has hundreds of nuclear weapons is absurd. You nor anyone else has any idea what they have. But we do know this... most of the Arab population in that region as well as the Iranians have at one point or another either has threatened Israel with extinction or wishes for their extinction. Your thoughts are mute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Iran has not threatened Israel with annihilation. That is a Zionist lie. In fact they just said this: Iran would not strike any country first.

The country that strikes first is the country that starts the war. It will not be Iran. If they are attacked, they have every right to strike back.

If Israel wanted peace, they would stop starting wars, as they did in 1967, operation "cast lead" and the attack on Lebanon. They attacked America on 9/11, by rigging the WTCs and Bldg 7 with explosives for a controlled demolition. No person with a functioning brain could watch Bldg 7 fall and not conclude it was rigged for a controlled demolition. Add to that, the fact it had just been insured billions against a terrorist attack by Silverstein, who is on video tape saying "pull it", the term used to setr off a controlled demolition.

Fanatic Muslims will always come up with some tortured logic to justify every one of their attacks as "retaliatory." Some morons even claim that bin Laden lied when he admitted he engineered the 9/11 attacks? It is funny to think that they actually believe that bin Laden and al Qaeda stole the credit for something that the Israelis did.

Pathetic.

I hope Isreal does have hundreds of nuclear weapons. What kind of idiot thinks this is about "fairness". Just becuase we have nukes and Isreal presumably has them does not mean that Iran should. Iran has vowed to exterminate Isreal and now they are threatening terrorist attacks against US civilians. What do you think "no where in america will be safe from our attacks" means.

As for letting Isreal take care of themselves, they certainly are capable, although I have no issue with providing them assistance becuase they serve an important role in the middle east. Its also the case that its in our best interest to help make sure that war does not break out. Especially with Iran working on a nuclear bomb.

You have to look at things from Isreals point of view. Time and again over the centuries, there have been attempts to exterminate them. It wasnt just WWII althought that brought modern technology and logistics to that particular attempt. The same thing has happened many times over the last couple thousand years. After WWII they vowed "never again". Make no mistake,if it comes down to it,with Iranian tanks on their borders and their defenses crumbling, they WILL turn their enemies nations into smoldering wastelands. I dont blame them one bit. You can also be certain the day that Iran tests a nuclear bomb,Israel will test a few themselves to let Iran know for certain what will happen if they are attacked.

One question comes to mind of course. Why is it so important to for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. There is talk of a deterent, but really,Israel has no desire to attack Iran, except to STOP them from getting a nuclear weapon. Iran on the other hand has vowed to wipe Isreal off the map. Of course thats impossible right now,as Israel has nuclear weapons and Iran does not. They want to change that, and open the possibility for war, hoping that Isreal would accept defeat and occupation and a slow annihilation rather than taking it nuclear.

RalphH:

"Iran has not threatened Israel with annihilation. That is a Zionist lie. In fact they just said this: Iran would not strike any country first."

Goodness me, Ralph, what have you been smoking? Don't you realize their religion gives them the right to lie when it suits their purposes? We're left with two statements that at least seem contradictory: yes, Iran has threatened Israel with annihilation and now they say they won't strike first. Which statement do they have the most to gain from if it is a lie? I would think the latter.

That said, I really seriously doubt that Iran would attack Israel with nukes even when/if they get them. That is for the simple reason that Israel is so small; even with the West Bank and Gaza it is about the size of Massachusetts. Too many nukes might render that territory unlivable for perhaps decades, including the Holy City of Jerusalem. That would solve the Palestinian issue real fast - everyone who survived would have to go live elsewhere. Iranian nukes are a far greater danger to its Middle East neighbors, which is why the Saudis are scared to death of them. The fallout is also going to blow eastward toward Iran itself.

Iran has yet to test a nuclear weapon. They also need a missle system to deliver it, and that includes a reliable guidance system. If they start lobbing nukes Israel's way, what happens if one veers off course and hits Jerusalem? Or the Gaza Strip? Or Mecca?

And finally, if Iran did ever start using nuclear weapons, the rest of the world would not sit by and let it happen. They would be lit up like a Christmas tree so fast their heads would swim.

Bottom line: The Iranian leadership may consist of fanatics, but they are not crazy.

Steven B, I think Iran is crazy and fundamental, but you are wrong on both your points. The current Iran regime has not threatened annhilation of Israel. I assume you're referencing their president's speech that has become urban legend, where it was falsely reported that he wanted to wipe Israel off the map. That IS NOT what was said.

You are correct, a bully picks fights, which is why Israel is the bully of the Middle East. They have killed thousands of innocent women, children, and men with their rocket attacks. Israel also ILLEGALLY has a large number of nuclear weapons. Why is it okay for Israel to have them, but not Iran ? It's hypocritical.

Iran has never invaded, or atacked another country without being attacked first.

So now I ask you, who's the bully ?

Iran's "Supreme Leader", Ayatollah Ali Khamenei preaches from the Qur'an:

"Allah has cursed [the Jews] and transformed them into apes and pigs." (Koran 5:60)
"The Jews are covered with humiliation and poverty, and the anger of God is cast upon them." (Sura 2:61)
"Salvation will not come until Muslims kill all the Jews, hiding behind rocks and trees." (Sahih Muslim, 41:6985)

This is no mere rhetoric. In the region of Mecca, Mohammed expelled, plundered and slaughtered the Jews when they refused to acknowledge Muhammad as a prophet. Today, these Koranic statements encourage Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to declare: "The Zionist regime is a cancerous tumor and must be cut off.”

It is all up to the Iranian leadership. They can give up their nuclear weapons program, open themselves up to full unfettered inspections of facilities and personnel and in so doing confirm their claims of peaceful purposes only for their program. Absent that, they simply can not be trusted given all that has taken place. The fact that they make threats, rather than open themselves up to inspection`s and a workable agreement speaks volumes about their true intentions. Hopefully, at least on this issue, Mr Obama will for once do what he actually says. But that too is in question given his recent statements and his efforts to stop the Israelis from taking action until after the Nov. presidential election here in the US. Seems his reelection is more important to Mr Obama than the security of our nation. Ditto, with regard to his recent "hot mic" statement to Mr Mevedev regrading a missile defense sheild deal (the Russians want US to forego it, our allies don't and it is supposed to be designed to protect against attacks from places like Iran ).

He lives in the neighborhood and has all of those U.S. built bombs, warplanes, missiles, and tanks. Not to mention hundreds of nuclear bombs and billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to support his efforts.

The funny thing is that its not just Nat that feels uncomfortable, most of the middle east does. All this 'peaceful' uranium enrichment, buried deep underground, under six feet of concrete, spread over multiple sites across Iran, all the secrecy and hypocrisy, stalling tactics, etc etc etc, makes it more likely that a nuclear weapons program is well underway.

If the Iranian people don't wake up and take out these theocratic nuts and their accomplices, they may wake up in a nightmare that only one other nation has witnessed.

There is no way to conduct a civilized discussion with anyone who believes that they will have a better life in the after world, simply because they have no value of life in this world.

Threatening retaliation within the United States is a good way for Iran to commit suicide.

America must stop all support of Israel and let them sink or swim on their own. They are a loose cannon in the ME. I am sick and tired of supporting Israel and paying tax dollars for a war which was planned and sold by the Zionists, Wolfowitz and Feith. That war will cost Americans trillions of dollars and the destroyed lives of our soldiers and their families. Zionists could care less about those soldiers or their families, as they are just regarded as gentile trash, to be used by Jews.

Iran can cause problems, create havoc and possibly attack the US through its proxies and agents but ultimately it will not stand a chance in any conflict involving the US and it knows a conflict with the US could spell the end of the regime. Israel needs to stay the course and allow the sanctions to work.

The militant clerical kooks running Iran can continue to use all the threatening rhetoric they want to, but the bottom line is still: NO NUKES FOR IRAN! (Capital letters). There is no way in hell they are going to be allowed to go nuclear.

Iran is dreamin'. They couldn't hit Israel if they wanted to. if they launched a nuke( if they had one) over Iraq, Syria or Jordan, that thing would be intercepted and nuclear waste would rain upon those Muslim countries. If they were to ship a nuke by boat around to the red sea they'd be sank pronto.

Please. Saber rattling in their underwear.

So hitting America is a heavy farce. Rest at ease America, they can't do much more than terrorist deception, if that.

Why do they give those clowns a voice? to perpetuate hatred?

What worries me more than a ballistic missile, is a rusty fishing boat carrying a crude Iranian nuclear suicide bomb into New York harbor.

This "equivalency" argument really irks me. In the here-and-now, Muslims have demonstrated their love of killing and chaos. Israelis have demonstrated restraint and civilization. In the here-and-now, Muslims are a danger to peace and stability in the world; Israelis are not.

are you saying israel just goes out and bombs these places for no reason?

israel is defending itself. quit sending rockets into israel and they will stop bombing. and if the cowards who are sending rockets into israel from civillian areas would stop. the civillians wouldnt be getting bombed.

its like if someone was attacking me from your house but it wasnt you. i would bomb the hell out of your house too. if you dont want to get bombed dont let them attack from your house.

Nuclear suicide bombs will affect the whole world.

Iran is led by a madman. He is the product of a religion that celebrates suicide bombings. He can not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons. If he has them, he will certainly use them. Not only the US and Israel, but all the civilized nations of the world must take any steps necessary to ensure that it never happens.

                    2. Many followers of Islam are terrorists.

                    3. Muslim governments protect terrorists and promote terrorism.

You know why Iran is so confident that they can strike the US so hard? Because we continue to allow Arab/Muslim immigrants into this nation by the boatload, more than ever. It is like a Trojan horse, they are on the inside and can strike at any time! We have many people of every nation here now and are filling up. Time to stop the immigration process now. Or at least slow it way down.

My take Mr. fedup, my opinion. and I hope you comment back.

The constitution does not say that those from other countries are free to cross our borders and cause us harm.

A legal immigrant passes certain "tests" if you will that allow them to enter our country. They are then allowed to come here and participate and contribute to this great nation. And hopefully eventually become a U.S. Citizen.

It's like a weeding out process. It's not perfect.

An illegal immigrant may have those same good intentions, but in some cases does not.

My opinion is that we should be "country" profiling, and not racial or religious profiling.

Pay special attention to those illegal and legal immigrants that try to enter our country from other countries that have caused us harm.

Once you have pledged allegiance to the flag and our constitution and vowed to be a contributor and pay taxes, then you should be allowed in.

                      Simple as that.

No one should be allowed to cross our borders illegally.

Anyway common sense says if someone tries to get into the country illegally they are up to no good.

                      There are exceptions of course.

Ralph H may sound like a wacko but, the trade center building swere brought down by controlled explosions. anyone can see it. as they are falling you can see the explosions detonating down the sides.

a plane crashing into them would never cause them to collapse like that. run a video of one of the towers going down next to a controlled demolition of another building.

i dont think it was israel who did it. but i wouldnt put it past our own govt to do something like this to get us into iraq.

Israel and all the countries surrounding it have been threatening each other since Pharoah. Ralph H I agree with you 100%. IRAN will not be the aggressor, someone else is gonna get this party started. Ahmeinajaad is no dummy. I dont think he's a war monger either.

Really? you don't pay attention. He has consistently openly in public speeches called for the annihilation of Israel. So can you not put 1 and 1 together? And if he is just lying and threatening to scare Israel then the man needs to own up to those public statements, he needs to be taken out first.

Then the world would see what happens to people like him that threaten and bully.

Shades of WWII exactly. Hit em first. They won't need a nuclear program or weapons if we take them out first just like we did Japan! This cracks me up worse than the people her IN THIS COUNTRY who don't know the truth, even in Iraq.

Just like Little Achnob Johnny (ahmadinejad) does, Saddam did the same thing.

Saddam threatened US and other countries with chemical weapons (he swore he had them) and would use them. Little achnob Johnny is doing the same thing with nukes and missles.

Good lord if he really had them he would use them, he says he will, just like Saddam said he would.

So what in the world is wrong with the right logic and what can you idiots not understand? Take him out first for crying out loud!

And then we can find out he was lying and all the liberals can have another field day and wonder why we did it just like with Saddam.

Here is why we did it and should do it again for those that don't get it. If a leader of a country says in public, in speeches (Saddam and Ahmadinejad) that they have the weapons and will use them, then TAKE THEM OUT FIRST!

WHAT IF THEY ARE NOT LYING,,, LIBERALS? What will you do then?

Ask yourself that, then get back to me.

The best solution is to terminate the idiot barbarians (Saddam, Ahmadinejad, Hirohito).

Invading countries, occupying, and killing hundreds of thousands of innocents makes no sense.

A debatable solution would be a world council that puts a "ultimatum" on a state leader that threatens other countries.

The ultimatum would be, STOP or you will be taken out.

I guess that would make too much sense.

The toos, as Netanyahu put it, include nuclear weapons. And this statement could easily be interpreted by Iran is a dirext threat to use them.

This could lead to a progaganda war, and strengthed Iran's case as to why Iran needs nuclear weapons. IsrealIran can say, has struck twicxe without warning in Syria and Iraq-a law breaker weho know no international law. A lawbreaker who killed innocents running a blockade when there were legal meands of redress-they chose instead violence.

This Iran can say, is exaclly why Iran needs nuclear counteer weight so the she won't feel or be bullied by from their view, is a terrorist state. Iran has not mentioned Isreal's nuclear arsenel in it's arguments so far-this now gives the an opporunity to do so.

We shall see if they do so.Netanyahu has given them a perfect opporunity to do so. If so it will mark an escaltion of tensions dramatically.

It's exactly why Iran needs to stop being "nefarious" to Israel and little achnob johnny (ahmadinejad) needs to stop threatening Israel with annihilation every chance he gets, that is the problem.

                                  Or did you miss that?

Israel never threatened anyone, or did you miss that too?

They only vow to defend their country.

It's simple math. If someone threatens to annihilate your people and countries very existence, then you take them out first.

I don't remember anyone from Israel saying they are going to annihilate Iran as a country or their people with their nuclear weapons ,,, simply just to remove the nuclear threat that is being brought to bear against them.

I wouldn't think that makes sense to you, but try,,please?

Lets break it down for you,

If a guy in your town says,

" I am going to get some dynamite and come and murder everyone in your family and blow up your house once I get the dynamite!!!"

And then repeats it in many instances to you and everyone in your town.

Would you not want to try and stop this guy from getting some dynamite?
