Hunted for horns worth more than gold, South Africa's rhinos face worst year on record

Conservationists are fighting a battle against poachers in South Africa - almost 2 rhinos a day are being killed for their lucrative horns. NBC's Rohit Kachroo reports from the Kar-eeka reserve where veterinarians try to save a rhino which has been savagely wounded.

More than one rhino is being killed in South Africa by poachers each day -- with 2012 on target to be the worst year on record.

Some 159 rhinos have fallen victim to poachers since January, a death toll that looks set to surpass last year's grim figure of 449.  In 2007, only 13 were killed in the country.

Demand comes from parts of China and Vietnam, where new wealth has combined with an age-old myth that rhino horns can be used to cure cancer.

Rhino horns are now worth an estimated $25,000 per pound, making their natural weapon worth more than gold.

Report: Poachers slaughter half of elephants in African park

Three rhinos were wounded in a single incident last month. Two died, but one -- named Thandi -- survived, though she remains seriously ill.

'Some glimmer of hope'
With little positive news from the frontline of the war with poachers, "Save Thandi" has become a rallying cry amongst those who care about the plight of the rhino in South Africa.

Bringing up baby ... elephants

"People are desperate to see something going right, some positive news, some glimmer of hope that we can actually do something that saves one," wildlife veternarian Dr William Fowlds said. "I think what has come through so strongly over the past month is how important every single animal is to us."

Same thing is happening in Nepal to the Asiatic Rhino.

I have been contemplating the idea of collecting and grinding up old fingernail clippings and selling it as rhino horn. You would probably need a lab to tell the difference between it and real rhino horn. It would serve several purposes: 1. F with the D-bags that actually think that rhino horn has some medicinal value, 2. dilute the market to the point where the price colapses and nobody is willing to kill a rhino for its reduced horn value, and 3. Make a bunch of money that can be used to hire blackwater employees to protect rhinos.

And then you have the dam lazy Africans who can't @!$%# with out some one to help them. Two useless continents. Take the poachers and the buyers and just shoot them!!

Actually it is not the poor Africans poaching rhinos. It is major criminals because there is so much money involved. The poachers have helicopters, planes, hi powered rifles and they can get the horns out on container ships.

Nothing has changed. Whites killed as many Bison as they could so the Native Americans would perish. Japan hunts whales, claiming it is for scientific purposes. Wolves are killed, because man does not want to compete with them, for the animals man hunts. I see very little skinny sport hunters. Less wolves, more animals to kill for trophy. Humankind is a destroyer. For every thing that humans invent for good, they figure out how to use it to destroy, many times over. We tell other countries what to as we destroy are own country. We are destroying animal and human habitat every day. If a human can kill another human in the womb, there is nothing else to be shocked at.

The poachers are in the wrong, but they are not the ultimate culprit here. The buyers of the rhino horns are the major problem. Who buys these things? The solution in my oppinion would be open season on any rhino horn retailers and purchasers, kill the demand and the poachers wouldn't kill.

Poach the poachers! This is outrageous. They are now using helicopters to shoot the Rhinos. Need surface to air missiles to take them out. As I understand, the black horn is used as an aphrodisiac in some parts of China and a cover for the handles on Middle eastern swords for family portraits. Unbelievable...life taken for something that could be handled with Viagra and acrylic paint. Find the people funding this tragedy, arrest the middle men and put an end to this terrible situation.

Someone should put a price on the poachers' teeth.

Trying to convice a classically trained herbal healer in Vietnam or China that Rhino Horn doesn't work is like trying to convince a "Johns Hopkins Trained" western Doctor that Penacillin, Sulfa, and Antibiotics don't work. Weathy Oriental people looking for a magic cure will pay any amount of money to procure it.. and those who have no consceince will get it for them. I doubt any "wild Rhinos" will be left in 15 years, and soon they'll start raiding zoos to kill the Rhinos there and harvest the horns.

It's like Polio, we'd have exterminated the desease from the world a decade ago if local healers (make that 'Witch Doctors') hadn't spread rumors that the vacine will make people sterile in the few places that the desease still exists.

Simple solution. Have the horns cropped by trained professionals while animals are young. No horn, no demand.Give animals a chance to rebound.

25 centuries ago a Greek philosopher Socrates was
sentenced to death for impiety and disrespect for the state religion. Last
century Madalyn Murray O’Hair was burned for her disbelives. In 1600 , an
Italian astronomer, Giordano Bruno, was burned alive on stake by the Vatican
order. In essence, superstition is part of power structure. Soon there will be

These 2 communist state are to be blamed for pushing these endangered animals to extinction. There is an old proverb saying that: if there is a demand, there will be a supply. vietnam and china are currently the top importer for rhino horns and other endangered animal parts like elephant tusks, black bear liver, sharks fins, seahorse that pushes these endangered animals to extinction. Communism promotes brutality not only to man kinds, but towards the animals kingdom as well. No wonder china and vietnam became the top importer for these endangered animal parts nowadays.

I think an education campaign might actually do some good. Websites dedicated to explaining that Rhino horn is little more than a muzzle-grown equivalent to a horses' hoof. In an attempt to feel adequate in bed, Chinese men and men of some other Asian countries have ingested powdered Rhino horn, thinking that the upright horn will *magically* cause upright elevation of their anatomy. It won't. Now the ignorant think that Rhino horn will cure cancer. It won't.

An education campaign via the internet and radio (both may be able to cross closed borders) that gives people accurate information about viagra and cancer treatment may help. Must help. We must not allow base ignorance and greed to lead to the destruction of the mega-fauna of our bio-diversity. We, humanity, cannot survive without the diverse non-human life on our planet.

For those of a religious bent: And God said, I give you this planet to live upon. Take good care of it. I'll be back.

If they cut off the horn above the face does the Rhino still die? I know it's a male dominance thing but if none of the other Rhino's have their horn cut off it's a fair fight again. Cut off all the horns before poachers do. Drill a hole into the horn and install a GPS tracking device. Dye the horns so they lose value.

It should be a crime to even own a horn. It's made out of the same minerals as your finger nails so when ground into dust it looks the same, put a ton of fake Rhino horn dust on the market and flood the black market with fake horns.

Well, if it's worth that much, they should make some of the Rhinos available for hunting. Perhaps charge a sir charge to help the state out. I do feel though that helping raise money in these countries is far more important then saving a few Rhinos, which no one really needs.

If we want to really solve this why dont some rich people get together and put a bounty on the lives of these poachers. If the villages and cities know they will receive more income from capturing poachers instead of letting them set up shop. Maybe they might rethink the "ancient chinese secret" routine.

There is a reward for information. The trouble is the poachers are very powerful and they have the backing of very rich criminals who can supply them with the most powerful guns and planes and helicopters.

The fact is Africa is huge and these reserves are massive. In say the Kruger Park, there are around ten thousand rhinos.

The combined population of China and Vietnam is around 2.2 billion. So, these animals stand no chance unless the anti poaching story goes viral and we campaign to stop their killing.

The Black Panthers and Al Sharpton could do a fundraiser for the bounty to place on the poachers head. Obama could make a speach and claim a rhino looks like his wife or some family member.

Then they could let a rhino loose in your living room, and hunt it with a mini-gun from a helicopter.

Suicide mission, though, on several levels (here are just a few):

. . . as if they could survive in that part of the world by sheer will alone, where millions of Africans can't even feed themselves, much less their families. Then there are the wild carnivorous predators, territorially defensive species, disease carrying insects, poisonous plants, parasite infested water, (do I need to go on?).

Eliminating supply does not eliminate demand, just look at the so called "war on drugs" in the US. It only makes the criminals more sophisticated. Just like there are bounties by the cartels for DEA the same is true for park rangers in RSA. Who wants that job? (apparently some fools on here do)
