Powerful quakes off Indonesia create panic around Indian Ocean

Updated at 9:22 a.m. ET: A 8.6-magnitude earthquake and powerful aftershocks struck off Indonesia on Wednesday, sending people scurrying from shaking buildings in several countries and raising fears of a disastrous tsunami.

Tsunami alerts were issued across the entire Indian Ocean, although they were later lifted.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that the initial quake happened about 14 miles beneath the ocean floor and 270 miles from Banda Aceh, the provincial capital of Aceh, at 2:38 p.m. local time (4:38 a.m. ET).

Reuters reported that the tremors were felt in Thailand, Singapore and southern India.

The quake struck in a similar location to the 9.1-magnitude tremor on Dec. 26, 2004, that triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean, killing almost 230,000 people.

An 8.2-magnitude aftershock hit at 6:43 a.m. ET, the USGS said. Fresh tsunami alerts were issued as a result. Several other smaller temblors, of between 5.1 and 5.7-magnitude, were recorded in the same area between 5:51 a.m. ET and 8:10 a.m. ET.

'The threat has diminished'
Individual countries, including Kenya, issued tsunami warnings for their Indian Ocean coastlines.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami watch -- an alert category one level below a warning -- for the entire Indian Ocean area but later canceled it.

"Level readings now indicate that the threat has diminished or is over for most areas,'' it said.

It posted a series of estimated arrival times for tsunami waves for potentially affected areas, saying that if no major waves had happened two hours after those times then “local authorities can assume the threat is passed.”

“As local conditions can cause a wide variation in tsunami wave action, the all-clear determination must be made by local authorities,” the warning center said.

Small tsunami waves of around three feet in height hit the western coast of Sumatra island, Reuters reported, though Indonesia’s disaster agency said it was still assessing whether there were any deaths or damage.

'Remain alert'
Indonesia's Geophysics Agency also said it had detected a rise in sea level of up to 2 feet 7 inches, according to Reuters.Tsunami waves are relatively small in the open ocean, but can quickly build up as they near shore or are channeled into inlets.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told The Jakarta Post that the large aftershock "might potentially trigger a tsunami. Residents must remain alert."

A witness on Indonesia's Simeulue Island, near the epicenter of the quake, said the sea had receded by about 10 yards; water receding is a sign that a tsunami wave is about to arrive.

NBC News reported scenes of panic in Indonesia, with residents and even hospital patients fleeing buildings.

PhotoBlog: Scenes of panic in Banda Aceh

"The quake was felt very strongly. Electricity is down, there's traffic jams to access higher ground. Sirens and Quran recitals from mosques are everywhere," a spokesman for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency told Reuters.

In Banda Aceh, Fauvan, who like many people in the region has a single name, told NBC News that when the quake struck "the buildings shook for three to four minutes --  it was very scary."

"I immediately left the building and ran towards higher ground. A lot of people did the same. There were a lot of people in the street," she said.

She said she had now returned to the hotel. "It is quite good here now" she said, sensing the worst of the quake and tsunami warning had passed.

Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency is sending a rescue team to Aceh province, and said electricity had been cut to the area.

Thousands evacuated
Several thousand people were evacuated to higher ground from parts of India's Andaman and Nicobar islands as authorities prepared for waves of up to 12 feet or more.

India earlier issued a tsunami alert for its eastern coast, saying waves measuring almost 20 feet high might strike parts of its eastern coast. Hundreds of office workers in the Indian city of Bangalore left their buildings.

Acehnese women hug each other and pray shortly after a powerful earthquake hit the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.

Reports on Twitter and elsewhere said Wednesday's first quake was also felt in Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia. High-rise apartments and offices on Malaysia's west coast shook for at least a minute.

Evacuation orders were issued for Thailand's southern island of Phuket and another southern province, Phangnga. "The province has turned on the warning sirens and asked people all over Phuket island to move to a safe place," an official from the Phuket Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center told Reuters by telephone.

The country's National Disaster Prevention Center told NBC News that Phuket airport has been temporarily closed and flights diverted elsewhere.

Previous Top 10 deadliest earthquakes in history

Nadine Hills, a British honeymooner on vacation near Ao Nang, Thailand, told msnbc.com that hotel guests had been evacuated to a local school. "There's a lot of people here and a massive storm flashing and rumbling over head. The police just arrived with water and to tell us we're safe for now. Just going to have to sit tight and see."

Simon Boxall, a U.K. oceanographer, told Sky News that the danger would not necessarily be over if the first quake did not produce a tsunami.

"The initial earthquake may not cause a tsunami … [but] there's no reason why an aftershock, which could still reach up to 8 in magnitude, cannot still cause a tsunami," he added, speaking before the first aftershock hit.

Boxall told Sky that not all offshore quakes produced tsunamis and issuing evacuation orders every time there was one could start to "get very messy."

NBC News reported that quake has been rated as a '5' on the USGS MMI scale, which measures the physical intensity of an earthquake as felt on the ground. A strength 5 quake is defined as: "Felt inside by most, may not be felt by some outside in non-favorable conditions. Dishes and windows may break and large bells will ring. Vibrations like large train passing close to house."

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who is on a pre-arranged official visit to the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, announced that Britain "stands ready to help if required."

Area prone to volcanic and seismic activity
Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.

According to the USGS, the 2004 quake struck about 155 south-southeast of Banda Aceh at a depth of 18.6 miles. Some 227,898 people were killed or missing presumed dead and about 1.7 million were forced out of their homes after the  tsunami affected 14 countries in Asia and East Africa.

Indonesia's explosive geology explained

"This is the third largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and is the largest since the 1964 Prince William Sound, Alaska earthquake," the USGS said in its summary about the 2004 earthquake.

"The tsunami caused more casualties than any other in recorded history and was recorded nearly world-wide on tide gauges in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans," it added.

The most severe earthquake since 1900 was of 9.5 magnitude and struck Santiago and Concepcion in Chile on May 22, 1960, triggering tidal waves and volcanic eruptions. Some 5,000 people were killed and two million made homeless.

Allah is angry that more people are not being killed by suicide bombers. I don't really mean that but I thought I would beat the good Christians who will say God is punishing them for something or another. I hope they all get out of harms way before it hits or that this quake did not create a tsunami. Actually, the first sentence is the dumbest thing I could think of, meant to lampoon. My apologies to the good people who might be offended by my caustic sarcasm.

Allah is God, God is Allah. There is only one god: the God of Abraham. Christians, Jews and Muslims all worship the same god, obvously with somewhat different interpretations.

allah is NOT the God of the Torah or Chirstian Bible. look up the end of thier book, then look up our's There is NO similarity. Their "god" will convert or kill everyone who doesn't convert to their belief. The difference? The God of the Bible allows you a choice in this Life. You choose the way you Live. The consequences of that choice are after death.
But this isn't the subject. Everyone pray for these people. They've been through so much already.

At least after the 2004 tsunami the people know to head for higher ground right away. Hopefully the lessons from 2004 will prevent a repeat of the massive loss of life. If they are lucky, the fact that this quake is quite a bit weaker will mean much smaller waves. I know that 8.7 does not sound like that big of a difference from a 9.1, but the scale is logarithmic, so the difference is actually quite substantial. Maybe they will get lucky and the specific geology of the area where the quake occurred will prevent large waves from forming. So many of the land areas around the Indian Ocean are extremely low lying, often for considerable distances inland. This would make the devastation from even a moderate sized tsunami devastating. All we can do at this point is hope for the best and wait to see what happens. So far there have been no reports of waves and the expected time of arrival for the first aves has already passed, so maybe they got lucky - keep your fingers crossed.

Anyone with half a brain knows this is not the fault of God or humans. If you feel you must place fault or establish blame then it will have to be on mother earth. You see there are these funny little things called "tectonic plates" and then there are also those darned "fault lines" at work too.

Where you decide to live is your choice, usually. If you live in an earthquake prone area you should expect and be prepared for earthquakes and tsunamis to happen. The same goes for volcanoes, hurricanes, avalanches, floods, mudslides, fire storms, and as in my case, tornadoes. I live in tornado alley where Spring is always an experience and more than just flowers, blooming trees and green grass.

I am sorry for those affected, but mother earth does what she needs to do when she has too.

Reports are now saying that this as a strike slip type movement in this quake, greatly reducing the chances of a destructive tsunami being created. An earthquake with a vertical type of movement is much more likely to cause a major tsunami than one with a horizontal slip like this one apparently was. A strike slip fault earthquake does not rule out the formation of a tsunami, but it greatly reduces the chances as well as the magnitude of any wave that does form. It sounds like they may have gotten lucky.

This is odd... the 2004 earthquake released an awful lot of pressure.. for another one in the same general location, at the same depth to happen, especially after the monster that hit Japan last year... These should have released enough pressure that this area should be relatively quiet for several decades - at least, from MONSTROUS earthquakes / tsunamis.... Seems theres alot of stress points going off right now. This concerns me for California which is overdue for a big one. I think - and hope - that if a tsunami does hit, that there will be few deaths because of preparedness activities there after the 2004 event.

Incredible how one can take a natural occurring event and try to blame it on God. If your God is sitting up there creating earthquakes and killing thousands then he is not my God. Those of you who say it is Gods will are just as foolish, more than likely it is his design and he does not control it. You do know we are all sitting on a crust of moving plates which covers a molten core right? Come on people use your heads and a little science or maybe you religious zealots would prefer we throw virgins into a volcano to appease the Gods?

God put us on earth to take care of one another. Disasters happen and we are given the choice of what to do. We learned (something, I sometimes think is a miracle) from the 2004 Tsunami. In 2004, there was no warning system in the Indian Ocean. Since that time, humans built the warning system. Today, Indonesians had a warning to get out of the way. That is us humans using our God given ability to think and plan and prepare. I'm grateful that we didn't just sit back and do nothing.

FYI. There is a great deal of difference between the 9.1 of 2004 and the 8.6 of today. Each level up the Richter Scales increases the magnitude of an earth quake. A 5 is TEN times stronger than a 4. So, the energy released by this earthquake is significantly less than the 2004 earthquake. I won't expect to see nearly the level of destruction. Of course, placement of the quake will also effect the destruction.

I think it's interesting how many people don't realize that not everyone can just take up and move. Really, if you didn't have much (which includes a good part of the planet's population) how are you supposed to pick up and move? There are family concerns, too. Your elderly mother can't or won't move, so you are supposed to leave her there and go somewhere you perceive to be safer? Sometimes there is water in the way of leaving, too.

It's easy for us to say, "Oh, just move away from there", but in reality many families stay in the same area for generations with little or no hope of moving. Not everyone has access to moving vans, money to relocate, and a new place to go even. Yes, preparation is key, and I hope that all concerned are safe.

If you believe in the Lord you do not fear death-by Tsunami, earthquake, sickness anything. This life will be full of trials and tribulations-how we react to those trials-is what God is watching.

Oh for crying out loud, people! I'm a geologist that specializes in subduction zone related volcanism (accounts ~90% of the worlds volcanism) AND I'm a Christian. God, Allah, or any other religious deity or lack thereof had nothing to do with the earthquake. This is a solely a subduction related earthquake located at the trench (not fault as erroneously called by the journalist). Indonesia is volcanic arc formed by the subduction of Indian plate beneath the Eurasian plate. The plates can 'lock-up' due to friction and at some point there is a sudden release. This is COMMON. The forces of nature are awesome and can't be controlled by man (or woman). We are only here for the ride. We can't stop geological processes but we can learn to live with them.

Yes, the United States placed a warning system in the Indian Ocean. Prior to the 2004 Tsunami and Quake we did not extend the monitoring system into the Indian Ocean. Even with the prior warning, certain people in some countries blamed the US for the massive death toll because we did not monitor that area. There were numerous warnings that went ignored especially in Thailand. Thailand was given warning well before the wave hit their country. Many lives may have been saved if the warnings had been heeded. I do feel for the people that lived through the 2004 Quake and Tsunami. That was likely the most horrific loss of life in history. May God be with them.

Why ask God? Because it is my choice to do so...nothing more. If you do not believe in God that is your problem. However, I know that deep in your heart you KNOW there is a God. You are just too full of yourself to admit it. If you believe that Man is the most intelligent and the highest power in the universe I really feel sorry for you. Having hope in only what man can do for you is a sad way to go through life. So, please do not question my request to a higher power to intercede. It is not your concern who or what I ask of anyone.

God has nothing to do with tragedies like this. It's amazing how people just love to blame God when bad things happen. Yet, no one gives God credit for good things, only bad. How do you think he feels when people blame all the bad in the world on him?

Good things come from God, bad things come from humans who think they know everything, when really they know nothing.

it is nice isn't it? To be able to deny that the Old Testament ever existed? They are the same God and no amount of hand wringing from you or any other Christian can change historical fact. All three religions were birthed in the Middle East, they are all the same religion written for their respective believers. Allah, Yahweh, and God are the same being. It is so sad that an atheist has to educate someone about their own religion's origin.

                    Jeff;

While that once was true, it might not be so much anymore.

I'm sure some of the wealthy does donate, but I'm also sure most of that money came from small donations of people in the middle class.

                    Quite frankly, we're tapped.

I haven't worked in seven months. My sons employer closed his doors two or three weeks ago, and my daughter in law is having her hours cut more and more. This week she's getting three days, next week it'll be two.

In addition, I read that article earlier this week about the engineer whose wife wrote the pres, telling of their plight. He has virtually quit getting phone calls and emails. True, he would have had to move to take one of the positions offered, but in the meantime, his wife found that many of those high paying positions are being given preferentially to foreigners. Seems there's a tax incentive for the employers. And we hear this country has to do that as we lack qualified people. I'd like to know just when that decision was arrived at. Aren't taxes like that federal?

In the meantime, my heart goes out to those poor people living with this terror.

And whoever wrote the article, the estimate of lives lost in the last one was not 230,000. It was 250,000.... That's a quarter of a million people, and unforgettable in my estimation.

Sounds close to where the 2004 quake hit and that was a 9.1. Now an 8.7, which will probably change as they all do, but a very powerful quake indeed. Hopefully the changes made after 2004 will help this time around.

You didn't read the article, did you? It says tectonic plates shifted horizontally instead of up and down, creating less of a tsunami danger.

After the 2004 earthquake scientists who study runout landslides decided to study the seafloor near the part of the fault that moved. They found a huge one. So during the earthquake, there was a massive underwater landslide that added it's energy to the water along with that of the earthquake and that accounted for the large waves. As of now the current situation looks like minor coastal flooding. Sometimes it takes years to account for every thing that happend in a disaster.

There must be displacement of water for a Tsunami to form. A horizontal shift in the plates causes much less displacement than a vertical shift. I have seen film of a Tsunami that hit a sound in Alaska. It was not caused by an earthquake but caused by a landslide. The side of mountain gave way and tons of rock, trees and dirt came down the hill crashing into the water. The slide displaced a large amount of water and a huge Tsunami formed. It cost many lives and a lot of destruction to property. I do not remember the exact numbers but thankfully it was a fairly small area and a low population area. That is just an illustration showing that it does not matter how the water is displaced.

Well, I'm not saying its a PC or even compassionate thing to say or think, but Desiraes has got a point there. When our planet is suffocating under the needs and wants of 7 billion people, nature always will find a way to correct the inbalance.

Can't say why such quakes don't hit China or India as our inquisitive friend, Phenomenal asks,...

but I can say to Monique that God has absolutely nothing to do with creating children or causing miscarriages. Pregnancy is the result of engaging in unprotected sex (basic human biology) and a miscarriage can occur for all different sorts of reasons...mainly, its nature's way of telling you that you shouldn't be having kids, or its nature trying to prevent some anamoly from being born.

Either way, Desirae is a bit misguided on that part.

Matthew 24:4-8 Jesus answered:"Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, I am the Christ, and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains."

You are right about one thing we do have to "deal" with it because it is biblical prophecy being fulfilled and the word must in that scripture says we will see this stuff happen so pray for the people and not the situation.

As far as the God population control you are absolutely wrong. Christ loves us and died on the cross for our sins and wants all of us to be with him on that glorious day of return. These are signs you are seeing that the bible is the Lords word and they are true, a wake up call.

The Lord did give us freedom of our own choice but he does give us a guide to decide where we want to go when we die.

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

What seems funny to me is that we all these days try everything to get ahead in whatever area of our life that is in need even if it breaks us. You tell people about a free very simple way to see changes to the positive and they don't try it. I challenge you today to say a few simple but powerful words sit back and watch God work in your life.

                          SIMPLE WORDS:

Heavenly Father, I know that I have sinned against you and that my sins separate me from you. I am truly sorry. I now want to turn away from my sinful past and turn to you for forgiveness. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your Son, Jesus Christ, died for my sins, that He was raised from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become my Savior and the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You and to convict me when I sin. I pledge to grow in grace and knowledge of you. My greatest purpose in life is to follow your example and do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

If you took this challenge today your next step is to find a local bible based church.

Now population control did I say of that country NO it was general term about the worlds population and not about race sex or humanly status. No where did I mention miscarriage(s) it was a general term about any loss of life that may or may not accure. WE as humas will deal with the fallout the best we can because we are just that HUMAN. The next thing you willl all say about my post is I some how brought up S. Korea's rocket launch as being responsible, or that I blame all people of color wether they be white purple blue or green it dont matter I hate them all oh yea and the president is responsible for this earthquake too can not forget him.

                            yourallfullofit;

You're reading from an invalid interpretation of the original King James version. It doesn't say "I am THE Christ" It says "I am Christ" referring to people calling themselves Christians. Also your reference to birth pains is invalid. It says: these are the beginning of sorrows. Sorrows and birth pains are two different ideas of reality.

This is just a small example of how the Bible has been misinterpreted form language variations. Your variation is within the same language.

You also need to read to read Revelations 5:6, if your Bible hasn't misinterpreted this passage as well. "...stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent forth into all the Earth." Jesus was not God's only begotten son. there have been six other spirits of God sent forth all over the world, not just the one sent to the Jewish faith.

I think John 3:16 says it all and it doesn't matter if you have NIV, King James version of the bible it is written that there is only one Son. There are three spirits Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Father being the creator, Son God sent in human form that died for us and rose on the third day so that we could live, and the Holy Spirit..the comforter sent after Christ ascended to heaven after his resurrection to comfort us and guide us in the ways of Christ. 2 Corinthians 13:14, Matthew 28:16-20, John chapter 14(says what I said above in most of the chapter), all of these mention the above statement about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit...none of them spoken plural.

I could write a thousand scriptures as reference showing where Father, Son, nor Holy Spirit is never mentioned in plural so to make life easier you would need to point out a scripture referring to one of them that indicates there was more then one of each.

As for Rev scripture you pointed out I would have to look at it to see what reference you were speaking before I commented.

I never wrote what I wrote to argue or even "force" anyone to believe what I do I merely was mentioning that it is written in scripture that these things will happen. As for the John 3:16 comment I figure since everyone that usually comments on these boards are in turmoil over tragedies going on and will always mention it because God can reveal who he really is if someone out there wants to give him a chance. I think it interesting so would like you to comment because it gives me insight on your beliefs. But don't be surprised if I reference back.

I lied a little on the John 3:16 thing because I forgot to mention that I also said it because I know where I was and what the Lord has delivered me out of and it was things that no human nor myself could have changed in a instant as that is how it happened.

Excessive oil drilling is a main cause of the increase of intense earthquakes. The earth is being bled to death of it's natural resources by greedy humans. Greedy humans are to blame for the frequency of these quakes. If you don't believe this, then do the research for yourself. I have done so.

Duh, yeah. Earthquakes do seem to happen in the same places WHERE THERE ARE FAULTS in the Earth's crust! We live on a dynamic planet with a molten core that is constantly moving and there are shifts in the crust of the planet where there are natural cracks. Nothing supernatural about any earthquake. This is just the way our planet works. Geez, people in this country are sooooooooo stupid.

Haiti was on the 12th. And what about other major earthquakes?

As the board's obvious self-proclaimed natural disaster date expert, I apologize to Your Majesty for not having those dates handy off the top of my head.

What's more disturbing is why you're being so nasty about it. Probably some deep-seated inferiority complex or mental disorder is to blame.

In what way was I being nasty? I was correcting one of your dates, and correcting a glaring fallacy. A quick google search provided these dates and many more.

Sometimes people try to make something out of things that don't actually exist. Rather than let those ideas spread unchecked, I feel it is better to educate.

Elentir, I do believe she wasn't trying to be all scientific, she was just saying something that stuck in her mind. No need to rip her apart like that. But, no need on her part to say something degrading either.

So, when someone says something that is factually incorrect, no one is supposed to correct them? Or, if they do, they are supposed to do so in the politest language possible? How exactly should I have pointed out the error?

I was direct and to the point, pointing out the flawed data and highlighting the fallacy. I didn't make any personal comments or insinuations. Why is that considered 'bad tone' or 'ripping someone apart'?

I am one of those "GOOD CHRISTIANS" and I will assure you I would never say, God was mad at these people and that is the reason for these conditions. Perhaps you meant the Religious people? Anyways with that said, I pray through Jesus to Jehovah to answer my prayers to give a miracle to these people and shift the threat another direction, even though he will not get the credit for the miracle.

Desira0220....I cannot believe your post! I mean, Population Control? The Government here is tying to do that right here in the good old USA. It is called "Planned Parenthood". Look up the history. Look up the woman who first started the movement and her ideas to control the poor here in the US. Anyway, Yes, God may use that way, but I wonder, how is he going to control our own pop. control.......Fire, floods, Do you have children yet?

Jan...wake up sister. PP wasn't founded to control the population. That's a silly human fallacy...that we can control our own kind. Humans are far too instinct-driven with zero ability to exercise self-control or logical reasoning to accomplish a feat only nature has the power to do anyway.

"Its in your nature to destroy yourselves"....goes a great line from movie history.

The Bible Thumpers will say its their sanctified duty to "go forth and be fruitful" yet none of them can show me a passage in the Good Book that says "breed yourselves to extinction".

Truth is, our planet is already running on fumes. This is why there are wars going on over control for the oil reserves and farmable land in the Middle East. In the not too distant future, it won't be oil but drinkable WATER (yes, the very essence of life on our planet) that will be causing the wars.

Whether we like it or not, Mother Nature could wipe us all out in an instant and from time to time, she likes to remind us all who's in charge here.

In any case, we,as a race, may not have the ability or discipline to control our own species, but we can certainly implement measures that will reduce our numbers....with a little help from Mother Nature herself.

talking to friends "down south" it was felt though most thought it was much smaller than the true magnitude measurement, thus the tsunami concern. Beaches in Thailand and Malaysia are being cleared and people are paying attention.

Question for the author: why report people in Bangalore are leaving their offices? Thats like saying people in Cincinati are leave work due to a tsunami warning in NYC????
