Convicted Lockerbie bomber hospitalized, family says

A September 2009 photo shows convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, in Tripoli Central Hospital, Libya. His family says al-Megrahi is back in the hospital and his health has deteriorated.

TRIPOLI, Libya -- The former Libyan intelligence officer convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people has been hospitalized after his health deteriorated quickly, his brother said.

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi's was taken from his Tripoli home to a private hospital, his brother Abdulhakim told Reuters on Friday. "His health began to deteriorate quickly and we were worried about him, so took him immediately to the hospital where he is receiving a blood transfusion," he said.

Al-Megrahi's son on Saturday told NBC News his father's condition is bad and he has already been in Tripoli Medical Center hospital for three days. He has had several blood and has been on chemotherapy, the son said.

The Megrahi family has been quoted by several news agencies as saying the convicted Lockerbie bomber is "fighting for his life."

Megrahi was convicted in 2001 of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 as it flew to New York from London. All 259 people aboard the airliner were killed and 11 others on the ground in the Scottish town of Lockerbie died from falling wreckage.

Britain freed him in 2009 on compassionate grounds because he was suffering from advanced terminal prostate cancer and thought to have months to live.

His release angered many relatives of the victims, 189 of whom were American, and the Obama administration criticized the decision. A number of U.S. politicians have pressed for his extradition to the United States, something Libya's ruling National Transitional Council said it would not do.

Megrahi, who served as an intelligence agent during the rule of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, denied any role in suspected human rights abuses in his home country before Gaddafi's fall and death in a popular uprising last year.

Reuters and NBC's Charlene Gubash in Cairo contributed to this story.

Instead, he was released in July, 2009, because he only had three months to live. Humanitarianism at it's (not so) finest.

I am outraged that he has had all of this time to prepare for his death and to say goodbye to friends and family, a privilege he denied so many innocent people with his actions.

He was supposed to have died years ago.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

The United States should have put more pressure on Great Britain but we didn't. The US government will say we did but we didn't. What a shame.

He's still alive? Surprised in all of the foreign troops and cia (I mean advisers) over there that he would have accidentally smothered on his own pillow by now.

And yes so much for the he only has months to live bs.

Why would someone terminally ill with cancer already living three years longer than redicted when they sent him home from Scotland in 2009, be treated with "chemotherapy." And why in hell do they say he's fighting for his life? If you are terminally ill, the fight is over, folks. This is one dirtbag terrorist more people than not would like to see leave this earth for good. Dying in a bed is too good for this killer.

What's the address of the hospital? What room is he in? Is he taking visitors? Because I'd like to stop in and pay him a visit!

WHAT was Great Britain thinking when the decision was made to release this THUG?

He should be shivering in a cold, wet, bacteria laden dungeon cell, right now.

The Brits didn't release him, Scotland did. It was still a gross miscarriage of justice no matter who did it.

The Brits didn't release him, Scotland did.

Er ... Scotland is PART of Great Britain. Great Britain includes England, Scotland and Wales (source: general knowledge backed up by the CIA World Factbook).

However, I agree ... it was a gross miscarriage of justice.

Scotland had jurisdiction over this terrorist. The Scots were the ones who released him.

Actually, I thought he was already dead. The previous turmoil in Libya was such an opportunity.

However, Peter is correct. MSNBC and all the other media, some celebrity twits who tweet, the new black panthers, etc. should be printing out exactly where this guy is. After all, he actually was convicted of his crime, sincerely and truly guilty (despite some foolish naysayers) and he was in prison for a while. Fair is fair. I've notice the aforementioned people and groups have no problem using the press for boosting their ratings. Printing out where this guy is should surely help them to their goals.

(I'm not stirring the pot, I'm just pointing out that some groups have agendas other than true justice. Justice should have been served on this monster long ago. The courts had already done their job. Letting him go was despicable. The media should be ashamed for its part in playing favorites.)

Scotland is indeed, part of the United Kingdom, and Great Britain. However, the release of this man was a decision made by the Scottish Parliament, not Great Britain, against the wishes of the English parliament i might add.

As a side note of interest, England is the only country in the United Kingdom, that dosnt have its own parliament. Westminster is the Parliament of Great Britain, while Wales, N.Ireland and Scotland have all devolved to govern themselves.

jim. George didnt get Osama, in fact, he allowed him escape in a MAJOR blunder! Then he shut down the "get Osama" team. He was never serious about getting Osama, too much bush money was at stake. Besides, Bush didnt want to endanger his own life--- blood is thicker than money!

To set the record straight, Bush didn't get Osama and neither did Obama. The men and women on the ground working and risking their lives through both administrations got him. I don't remember Georgy or Barry ever chambering a round and getting their hands dirty....ever....

for the record, they both suck ;)

I seem to remember paying $4.11 a gallon under the auspicious presidency of the intellectually challenged George W. Bush in July of 2008. Bush also declared two "unfunded wars" killing hundreds of thousands of people so he could impress his daddy. Stupid is as Stupid does if we get another republican wing nut voted in.

No, Obama is far more likely to "get" this terrorist. Bush has never done anything, particularly he lost interest in catching Osama. It took Mr. Obama to get Osama so don't try to rewrite history, the rest of us aren't as stupid or forgetful as you seem to be.

It was a rumored deal between BP and Lybia which put the pressure on the UK to do this. In my opinion, if such is true, it's even more despicable and everyone involved should go to prison ... BP officials, UK officials and whoever else. Now, had they gone in and kicked the sh*t out of Libya and just taken their oil, well, I could admire that. But, they did it in such a whiny, girly-boy way, it makes me sick. We're going to be in a global war for oil anyway and we'll probably be fighting The Caliphate/Muslims, China and Russia over same. Might as well get it off to a good start. Yippie ki yo!

If not, I hope he's in the worst pain in the history of living organisms on this planet. Please feel free to add your hopes and dreams for his suffering. The UK (which includes Scotland, for you geography challenged morons) is rapidly becoming Islamic. They are already suffering the consequences of their stupidity and tolerance (self immolation) and it will only get worse. They will look back on the day they released this monster as one of the worst in the history of Western Civilization.
