Subscribe to RSSA string of brazen attacks in Afghanistan left 36 insurgents, eight policemen and three civilians dead. NBC's Sohel Uddin reports.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Monday that the massive Taliban offensive in Kabul and three other provinces showed a "failure" by the intelligence services, and especially by NATO.
In his first statement regarding the 18-hour siege of diplomatic and government enclaves, Karzai also said that Afghan security forces proved themselves capable of defending their country and providing security, Reuters reported.
Thirty-six insurgents were killed during the brazen attacks that also claimed the lives of eight policemen and three civilians, Interior Minister Besmillah Mohammadi told The Associated Press.
Battles which broke out at midday on Sunday gripped the city's central districts through the night, with large explosions and gunfire lighting up alleys and streets.
"The fact terrorists were able to enter Kabul and other provinces was an intelligence failure for us and especially for NATO," Karzai's office said in a statement, which also strongly condemned the attack.

NBC News' Sohel Uddin reported that, after an intense assault at Afghanistan's parliament, the fighting ended at around 6:20 a.m. local time Monday (9:50 p.m. ET Sunday) with Afghan forces firing their weapons in the air in victory.
He said he had watched NATO Black Hawk helicopters and Afghan forces pound a building "in an effort to flush out the few remaining insurgents."

Officials in Afghanistan and U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker said the attacks appeared to bear the hallmarks of the Haqqani network and a top Afghan security official said an attacker who was captured alive had confessed the attack was carried out by the militant group, Uddin reported.
The Haqqani network has ties to the Taliban and al-Qaida.
Afghan and U.S. officials are trying to coax the Taliban — which is not as closely linked with al-Qaida as the Haqqanis — to negotiate a political resolution to the 10-year-old war.

If the Haqqani faction of the insurgency is behind the recent attacks, it could be easier to sell the idea of making peace with the Taliban to skeptics who say it amounts to making a deal with the enemy.

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.
Though the death toll was much lower than other attacks, the dramatic assault on multiple targets showed that militants are far from beaten and can still penetrate Afghan security — even in the heart of the capital — after 10 years of war.
The attack also underscored the security challenge facing government forces as U.S. and NATO troops draw down and prepare to leave by the end of 2014.

International forces have been working to build up the Afghan army and police — a goal threatened by a growing number of insider attacks this year. In the latest such attack, an Afghan soldier opened fire on Bulgarian troops at his base Monday.
The soldier fired from a guard tower down on the Bulgarians at a joint base in Kandahar city, said Col. Mohammad Mohsin, a spokesman for the Afghan army in Kandahar. The Bulgarian troops fired back, killing the Afghan soldier, Mohsin said. He said the attacker was from northern Takhar province.

That being said, Mr. Karsai stepped into his NATO supplied armored car, surrounded by NATO security forces, and was lead to his NATO protected compound.

Isn't it obvious the Afgani's don't want us there anymore. There is no doubt that the country will fall apart after we leave, but just staying there is just holding off the inevitable. The NEO Conservatives which want us to stay there until "Mission Accomplished" should be asked "what is Mission Accomplished". If it is to provide a stable government in the region - this will not happen. If the Mission is to protect the people, then we would need to send tens-of-thousands of more troops into the area, and we'll be there until America collapses - which was Bin Ladens's objective and his "Mission Accomplished"..
When the leader of Afganastan criticizes the very people who sacrificed so much to protect him, we need to re-think our stategy.

As soon as something bad happens they ask "Where was the help and support?" What a coincidence! We're forced to abandon night time operations without the "permission" of Afghanistan and, what, 2 weeks later, this happens before the dawn. Couldn't possibly be that the Taliban would have stayed hidden in their holes if they thought there was the possibility of being spotted by an armed patrol at night...or that suspension of nighttime raids allowed them the opportunity to move personnel and equipment into position for these attacks. But this is NATO's fault according to Karzai....
Did you all just read the headline and jump straight down here? Karzai said the fact rebels could enter Kabul was an intelligence failure, both of his people and NATO. That's it. There was no rant (although using the words "especially NATO" was probably unfair). And he's right; it was an intelligence failure, although I don't see how it could have been avoided short of sealing off the city and ID checking everyone, and even that might not work.
It sounds like his forces actually stepped up for a change. Who knows? Maybe the country won't collapse when we leave, although I'm not taking any bets. Do we have to wait until 2014?

Get your head out of your Karzai and think about your statement. I believe Obama ordered the surge troops into Afghanistan. Add that onto his tab.
Obama gave the military about 60% of what they said they wanted for the surge. The GOP was hot as hell about him not giving them everything they wanted. And it is a bit absurd to nail Obama for an 11 year war when he's been in office for only the last 3. Me, I think we should be pulling everybody out in whatever way will minimize the opportunity for our guys to get killed by "our allies", including the Paks. And I'll give you odds that if reason prevails and we pull out EVERYTHING (men, money and materiel), leaving only Special Ops and drones to whack whatever terrorists we want, Karzai and company will damned near beat our last people out of "his country", to join up with the billions of US dollars that they have siphoned off into private accounts.

Seems we've been here before. Every time the US and or NATO helps a troubled nation with money, food,much needed medical supplies,and weapons which eventually will be used AGAINST the same entities that helped them and THAT Govt. chastises the elements trying to help them. My opinion,pull our troops and let them deal with their own problems as we have enough of our own and if anyone acts aggressively toward us Nuke the bastids.

You're right. Obama did contribute to the problem in Afganastan. Sending in more troops seemed to work in Iraq and I think he and his military advisors thought they could achieve the same results.
Now I am man enough to say Obama made a mistake, can you defend your position - what ever it is.You're pretty good at sarcasm, do you have any other contributions?
Protective custody? Really? Care to elaborate? I guess if Bush wear's a "@!$%#-eat'n grin" then it's perfectly fair to talk about how Obama literally looks down his nose at the assembled peasants whenever he gives a speech.
Karzai, and his crime infested administration, survive only because NATO kept him safe. If it were up-to the Afgan Troops he would have been dead, buried and replaced long ago. Karzai should be counting his blessings and thank NATO for propping-up him and his cronies.
Time to leave. No more support. No food, no supplies, and most of all, no more money. Karzai needs to realize that his life expectancy after NATO goes is about 15 minutes.
This is the only way that Karzai Government try to cower their weak and not responsible for their own citizen life and security and blame to the foreign forces. And this not just for the first time for them.

The Supplies to US Military is strained to nearly the breaking point. USAF Aircraft are grounded for lack of repair parts. US Military Vehicles are breaking down. Ammunition is rationed. US Military are being served mostly cheese sandwiches. There are Fuel shortages. New US Military must be retrained after arriving in country just to survive long enough to gain experience due to cuts in US Military Training Funds at the US. US Military Families on Food Stamps, Public Assistance are sending their US Military Service Members Canned Food, Carbon Boron Strike Plates for their Interceptor Body Armor, M-16/M-4 ammunition magazines, Bulletproof Vests, new Uniforms, boots, etc..

President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke start their negotiations with President Karzai without General McChrystal's Input into the US Military, NATO, ISAF, Rules of Engagement. The Rules of Engagement becomes "Cannot Shoot Until Shot". The Al Quada, Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban, etc. know this and shoot at US Military with biggest weapons first, so that US Military are Dead and cannot return fire. RPG-7 attacks become common.

President Obama denies his repeated requests, while telling the US Public thru the US News Media, "Whatever General McChrystal Needs he will get".

General McChrystal goes Public to the US News Media. President Obama gets extremely angry and verbally chews out General McChrystal during a Video Conference in front of all of his subordinates. To keep an eye on General McChrystal President Obama listens to his Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke to create a US Civilian Chain of Command, and place President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry's and Holbrooke's trusted US Civilians on General McChrystal's High Level Staff. This is a violation of the basic US Military Principle of "Unity of Command" (One US Military with Authority, Responsibility, Accountability), these US Civilians have no US Military Experience nor even the concept of Asymmetric Warfare (Insurgency/Counter Insurgency, Counter Terrorism).
The US Military is now second guessing and looking over their shoulders as not to piss off the US Civilian Chain of Command and get backstabbed by the US Civilians complaining to President Obama's Political Appointees, SOS Clinton, and President Obama. Most US Military Missions are put on hold, and US Military are placed on Guard Duty to protect US Civilians at Afghanistan. The US Citizens of the US Military become second class US Citizens to the US Civilians, many of the US Military paid below minimum wages start thinking to themselves give their weapons to the US Civilians and let these Privilaged Overpaid Expensive US Civilians do their US Military Missions. These US Civilians keep saying "US Civilian Control Over US Military" and "Way above your (US Military) pay grade" (US Civilian attitude of "I get paid more than you so shut the f**k up").
Iraq and Afghanistan being Asymmetric (Insurgency/Counter Insurgency, Counter Terrorism) Wars. And NOT Wars ruled by Convention like World War I Trench Warfare running into machineguns (1907 Hague Convention) or World War II andKorean Conflict running up a hill to take ground (1949 Geneva Convention) as Civilian attempts to make War "Civilized" (Civilianized) with pieces of paper (that do not stop RPG-7s, bullets, IEDs, etc.); instead of Survival and Lives.
5. August 2009. President Obama's US Civilian Surge sends hundreds of thousands of US Civilians to Afghanistan. These Privileged, Overpaid, Expensive US Civilians start to demand as their "Rights", Armored SUVs, Secured Hotels (Guarded by US Military taken away from Combat Missions), Translators (Taken away from US Military Combat Units in contact with Afghans daily, these translators used as Servants like getting KFC at Kabul), Starbucks, Burger King, Pizza, Steak and Lobster (Surf and Turf), etc.. Included with these hundreds of thousands of US Civilians are hundreds of US Lawyers to prosecute the US Military for violations of President Obama's Rules of Engagement.
These US Lawyers attempt to prosecute the Deutsche Bundeswehr Commandos (German Special Forces) that called in the USAF airstrikes on the hijacked by Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban Fuel Tankers. The German President informs President Obama that the Germans will withdraw and cease all German support of President Obama's War at Afghanistan, including demanding the closing of all US Military Installations at Germany that provide Logistics support to Afghanistan.
These privileged US Civilians as Non Combatants require 24/7 Guards from the US Military, further taking US Military from Combat.
The Supply, Logistics, etc. at Afghanistan has gone beyond the breaking point. This is the Responsibility is dumped on General McChrystal, NOT President Obama's Political Appointees and US Civilians that are further increasing the problems. General McChrystal states the problems to President Obama. President Obama ignores General McChrystal.
6. General McChrystal solves his Supply, Logistics, etc. problems at Afghanistan by stopping the USAF Airlifts from Germany and US; and Drivers risking their lives driving truck loads from Pakistan of Burger King, Starbucks, Pizza, Steak and Lobster, etc.. And closing down the Burger Kings, Starbucks, Mexican Food, Pizza, stops the catered banquets, steak and lobsters (flown in), etc..
By doing this the US Military starts to receive the minimum required bullets, food, maintenance parts, etc. as President Obama's previous US Military Defense Budget Cuts are preventing the maximum required to accomplish any missions.
The Privileged Overpaid Expensive US Civilians that run the US Military Dining Facilities and refuse to even eat there, start to protest to President Obama's Political Appointees, SOS Clinton, and President Obama that their "Rights" to Burger King, Starbucks, etc. are being denied by General McChrystal. President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke are happy, maybe General McChrystal will be Relieved of Command before he can complete his Investigations of them as requested by President Karzai. More Hundreds of Billions of USDs are being spent by President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke and still nothing is being built nor done; General McChrystal recommends to SOS Clinton and President Obama that these Funds be transfered to the US Military and or being accessible by President Karzai; SOS Clinton and President Obama refuseto listen to General McChrystal.
General McChrystal requests more US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces (aka Special Warfare) and a small amount of US Military Conventional Warfare Forces.
7. President Obama as Commander In Chief orders sending a fraction of US Military Conventional Warfare Forces. How would you instead of getting your whole paycheck only receiving a fraction.
And instead of the requested US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces, US Military Conventional Warfare Forces are sent. So instead of being paid in USDs you are paid in the same number of Mexican Pesos.
Unlike the US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces "Live with the Locals for years of consecutive tours", "Deal with the situations at hand" requiring less Logistics, Supply, etc.; the US Military Conventional Warfare Forces require more Supply, Logistics, etc. with more chances for the enemy to obtain Strategic Asymmetric Warfare Goals. For US Army Special Forces (trained and experienced in Asymmetric Warfare) General McChrystal the War at Afghanistan is becoming Unwinable due to the decisions of President Obama. The US Civilians of President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke that were placed on General McChrystal's High Level Staff are seeing for themselves how screwed up President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke, SOS Clinton, and President Obama really are.
8. Being a US Military Professional, General McChrystal knows that he is ultimately Responsible, Accountable as the Commander of Afghanistan, and the US Politicians are NOT. And that President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke will never be held accountable nor responsible for their actions (screw ups, that tied General McChrystal's hands, legs, feet, etc. and all US Military Operations).
The US Civilians of President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke that were placed on General McChrystal's High Level Staff are seeing for themselves how screwed up President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke, SOS Clinton, and President Obama really are. While partying at Paris France these US Civilians are overheard, "This Administration Does Not Know What It Is Doing" (and getting US Military Killed Unnecessarily).

Additionally, as a US Military Officer as the US Congressionally Appointed Representative of the US Citizens of the US Military, it would be his Duty as a US Military Officer to report to the US Public those actions that are getting the US Citizens of the US Military Unnecessarily Killed after the US Politicians refuse to listen. President Obama's Political Appointees Eikenberry and Holbrooke start to go to the Court of Public Opinion thru the US News Media demanding General McChrystal be Relieved of Command for "Insubordination". President Obama, SOS Clinton are informed by the US Lawyers that they have no Legal leg to stand on pertaining to "Insubordination", and that to Relieve General McChrystal would require US Congress to hold a Public US Congressional Hearing with everything becoming known as to why "This Administration Does Not Know What It Is Doing" and completely destroying President Obama's Political Career.
