Subscribe to RSSArmy officials are conducting a criminal investigation into newly revealed photographs showing U.S. troops posing with body parts of dead Afghan suicide bombers. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai called Thursday for U.S. and other foreign forces in the country to hand over security to his government's forces sooner than planned, following the publication of photographs showing American troops posing with the body parts of dead suicide bombers.
In a statement issued by the presidential palace statement to NBC News and other media outlets Karzai said he strongly condemned the "inhumane and provocative" act.
"It is such a disgusting act to take photos with body parts and then share it with others," he said, according to the statement.
The statement noted "similar incidents of odious nature in the past that sparked angry reaction by the Afghans and the international community at large."

"The President underlines that the only way to put an end to such painful experiences is through an accelerated and full transition of security responsibilities to Afghan forces, so Afghanistan can take over its own destiny and, thus no such things can be repeated by the foreign forces in Afghanistan," it added.
The acts shown in the photographs, which were first published by the Los Angeles Times, were condemned by U.S. officials and the commander of NATO-led forces in Afghanistan, Gen. John R. Allen. "The actions of the individuals photographed do not represent the policies of ISAF or the U.S. Army," Allen said.
On Wednesday, the LA Times ran an article in which it explained the decision to publish the pictures, which were taken in 2010.
“We considered this very carefully,” Editor Davan Maharaj said. “At the end of the day, our job is to publish information that our readers need to make informed decisions. We have a particular duty to report vigorously and impartially on all aspects of the American mission in Afghanistan."
NBC's Sohel Uddin reports live from Kabul about the deadly attacks in Afghanistan over the weekend. MSNBC's Alex Wagner and the NOW panel discuss the effects of the violence on the withdrawal of American military troops, and what the attacks could mean for national security in the Middle East.
"On balance, in this case, we felt that the public interest here was served by publishing a limited, but representative sample of these photos, along with a story explaining the circumstances under which they were taken," he added.

The Times said that the the Defense Department had asked the paper not to run the photos.
The paper's article said that the safety of troops was among The Times' concerns.
“When we made the decision to publish, the Pentagon asked us to wait 24 additional hours to protect troops depicted in the photographs," Maharaj said. "We agreed to push back our publication date until the Pentagon told us they had taken the necessary precautions. In fact, we waited more than 72 hours after their request."

Amazing, what short memories. Does anyone remember when these same people dragged the bodies of dead Americans, military and civilians around publicly. I don't believe that we should immitate their behavior, but I am getting pretty sick of the holier than thou attitudes. I still remember the mass celebrations after 9/11 and then the claim, that these poor people do not know why we are there. Let's really get stoked, release the real pictures from 9/11 for all the world to see.
Karzai says this now, but when his family is kidnapped and tortured by Al Qaeda or other local, radical militant group seeking power, he'll be wondering where NATO protection is and why NATO and the US allow the bombings and other senseless acts of violence to occur, but rather pull out (on his request, no less)
karzai is laughing all the way to the bank. He has been well paid and only needs to spout at the mouth every once in a while to appear vital. Soon he will retire to his Palm Island estate. We are all being played by the good cop bad cop routine and we eat it up as truth.

This was all in caps but msnbc wont let me "yell on the vine". The media can say whatever they want, make it sound like American troops were holding body parts, post photos of people that have a.l.r.e.a.d.y. b.e.e.n. p.u.n.i.s.h.e.d. and further risk the lives of good soldiers, to sell some ads. But I cant put my opinion in caps! Whichever soldier dies from retaliation due to these photos, that the Defense Dept. asked you not to publish, that will a confirmed media kill.

I am always sadden to see the double standards our News uses. We show pictures of different Muslims dragging, beheading, harming, having sex with children, and I could go on and on. We see this every day. I know the Qu'ran, says to kill unbelievers and what ever you do is ok to unbelievers. I have read, the Qu'ran many times. Yet, our News agency's jump on the band wagon and spread the word those who harm others want. War is War. I have fought in one. These folks care less for each others dead then most Westerners do. Death means less to them. Yet, any chance to attack the US Soldiers and make a big noise they jump on it. When the US leaves the area it will fall into the Talibans hand then the Russians. Yes, the Russians, for they are working together now. I think the US President is a sad Leader when he jumps through their hoops.
No mention of him condemning the suicide bomber, just coming down on US troops for not treating the suicide bomber's parts with more respect.
He missed a good opportunity to STFU right there...

The blame should be put on the LA Times. They were repeatedly told not to send these pictures, or show them, going viral.

I will echo the prevailing sentiment that while I don't necessarily condone the pictures, the treatment of deceased Americans has been much MUCH worse. There is a double standard in the world where the misdeeds of the muslim world are whitewashed, while the misdeeds of Americans are multiplied by 100.
I have seen literally hundreds of pictures of American soldiers posing next to dead Germans, Japanese, etc during WWII, with ZERO outrage. Perhaps the mainstream media should just formally declare their allegiance to our enemies and at LEAST become somewhat intellectually honest.
Instead of apologizing to Karzai, Obama and his administration should be telling Karzai to go to hell. Until Karzai and his government apologize to the US for all the video taped beheadings of US service men and civilians, the hanging of the bodies of US servicemen from bridges, the dragging of US servicemen's bodies through the streets, and the murders of US servicemen by Afghani soldiers, then the Karzai should be told to keep his stupid trap shut. A few desecrated copies of the Koran get burned, which by the way was in complete accordance with Islamic law, and Obama apologizes for it. The Afghanis then kill six US servicemen in retaliation and no one in the administration says a word or demands an apology from Karzai or his government. I am sick to death of this double standard where the Afghanis do whatever they want to our servicemen, not to mention American civilians, with absolutely no apologies or even acknowledgement that it is wrong from the Afghani government while the Obama administration stands up there and kisses Karzai's ass, apologizing for every single thing that a US soldier does wrong. It is no wonder that this administration has become a complete laughing stock in international circles. I am not defending what these servicemen did, but I have had it with the double standard.
Reagan has become known as "the great communicator" from his time as president. History will remember Obama as "the great apologizer."
I am also sick of the US news media taking every possible chance to denigrate our soldiers and making a huge deal out of every incident, no matter how small. On the other side of the coin, an American soldier risking his life to save an Afghani girl gets little mention at all. It seems that if a US soldier does something positive it might be in the news for a few hours, if it makes it into the news at all. However, let a US serviceman do something wrong and they keep it in the headlines for a week - that is unless something else negative pops up to take it's place. It is time that the news media started giving some coverage to all of the positive things that US soldiers are doing instead of harping only on the few negative things that occur.

14,000 Russian soldiers lost their lives in Afghanistan and so did Afghan soldiers who were fighting against the initial elements of Islamic fundamentalists that became the Taliban. The United Armed and trained these separatists to fight against the legal gov't in Afghanistan. It's not hard to understand why Afghans might celebrate 9/11. Americans should celebrate it. We created it. And now our soldiers are in Afghanistan performing a job that had we minded our own business Russian soldiers or Afghan soldiers could have done.
I still say we need to get out NOW and let Afghanistan take care of their own sh.t.

I have serious concerns about devolution in the US of anyone who thinks Karzai is right. In a logical world, any suicide bomber or enemy combatant should be viewed as an "enemy of the state", and patriotic Afghans should have celebrated and posed with our soldiers. Since production of poppy product has increased from ~ 185 tonnes per year before our intervention to the current value of ~ 5800 tonnes per year with our 'help' ( UN estimates ) - it would obviously be good for us to leave, along with all our 'contractors'. Since product production has increased under our watch by several thousand percent one can only assume it is not just Karzai benefiting from that, but perhaps interests closer to home as well - or they would have stopped it.

I agree. This doesnt seem like a good recruiting tool for the terrorists unless they want to end up in several pieces being photographed in a less than honorable fashion. I would say more of a possible deterent.

Seems like Americans have a severe military impairment in recognizing their true enemies. First Iraq, based on a lie that they had WMD's that someday in the 24th century they might use against us,and then the Taliban who simply rented a couple acres of land to Saudis so they could develop the superior WMD of mass destruction guaranteeing Americans would die (that weapon of course was razor blades, which Americans to this day so rabidly fear that they will strip naked to avoid them). The Taliban (at least parts of the Taliban) were recruiting, training and harboring terrorists and were working with al Queda IN Afghanistan. The US did not first go into Iraq. The US along with other allies went into Afghanistan against those who were harboring terrorits.
While you may not think it was necessary, the Congress did.
I would like to point out that while the terrorist responsible for the attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon were of Saudi Arabia nationality, they were not Saudi Arabian people or affiliated. In fact, Osama Bin Laden was considered an outlaw (rebel) in Saudi Arabia. It is complete mistake to forget the reason for our invading Afghanistan and it does a great dis-service to our dead in the events of September 11, 2001.
Here is a remember of the course of events from them. The United States as attacked by a group of people organized by a known international terrorist group. It was not the first time in history such an attack had occurred by that group. It was not even the first time the group attacked the World Trade Center itself. It was only the most successful and biggest causality occurrence.
The United States government and intelligence services tracked the leaders of the group and those who organized it to the sovereign territory known as Afghanistan. At the time, the country was under a governmental authority known as the Taliban. The United States government informed the Afghanistan government to hand over the leader of the terrorist group. The Afghanistan government (Taliban) refused to do this. The United States government then invaded the sovereign territory of Afghanistan to capture or kill the terrorist group responsible for the events of September 11, 2001, and to remove the Taliban government from control of the country for their refusal to hand over and their protection of these people.
If you do not condon the Afghanistan that occurred in the Fall of 2001, what would you suggest should have been done in this case? Heck, if you do not condon such events with Afghanistan, do you believe that it was wrong for the United States to go to war and attack Japan after the events of December 7, 1941 as well?
You know speaking of 9/11 and who was behind it, I'm still waiting to see proof of who did it! Then I'll decide if we did the right thing.

Sorry but I don't see the flustercluck some delicate souls claim to. There's a photo of my father standing with General Mark Clark next to a shell-hole in Italy with the body of a dead German soldier inside. The photo was seen world-wide on the cover of Stars and Stripes, and was recognized by a neighbor of his sitting on a sack of rice on an airfield in Burma. I understand fully why we don't want photos of our soldiers abusing the dead, but a photo such as was apparently described is causing such an uproar? War is hell, people! Bodies are violently dismembered by gunfire, artillery rounds, bombs, etc. Why are we pretending that that's not what happened in this photo? A bomber blew himself up, this is what's left. There's a lesson in the photo, and there's a backstory lesson about political correctness and excessive nicety in the blowback that's got everyone so fascinated. Sorry, but I don't buy the necessity for all the mea culpas and political breastbeating.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but one would think there would be more outrage and condemnation of the persons to whom the parts belong...suicide bombers who not only took their own lives, but for the sole purpose of killing others, possibly women and children included. It's as if the suicide bombings are now accepted behavior, no longer an act deserving of condemnation or outrage! This photograph should be a reminder of the groups who brainwash the young and vulnerable to do acts that they themselves are unwilling to do.
I notice MSNBC edited the picture so that it does no0t show that it is two Afghan Security Forces are the ones holding up the body parts. I have to admit, I've noticed a lot of political, race, and class baiting articles here, articles that contain a small amount of information yet give the impression one group of Americans is against another. The Martin/Zimmerman case is one example, as are "the rich are different (and worse) than you and me" stories, and you couldn't find an objective article on the GOP to save your life. Not a whole lot of actual news here.

This is sad because it reminds of what my dad told me happened in Vietnam. The frustration of the soldiers fighting this type of war leaks out into actions like this story reports. I don't really blame the troops, I blame our strategy that I don't think has been effective. I want our troops to come home. I don't see anymore how being in this country is helping the U.S. Maybe someone can explain it to me?

We posed with body parts in previouswars. In past wars, the enemy was shot in legitimate battles. These body parts resulted from cowardly suicide bombers blowing themselves up and hoping to kill civilians as well. The dead terrorists deserve no respect. And the Afghan people should be happy these terrorists are dead because the terrorist target the Afghan people more than they target US soldiers.

The US military invaded Afghanistan and are killing their people (women children and men alike). The afghanis who fight the occupiers are fighting to free their country from the invaders. The US military has no business to be in afghanistan or Iraq. They are the true terrorists in my opinion.
