Sudan leader says he will teach independent South a 'final lesson by force'

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, center, waves from the back of a truck during a visit to North Kordofan, Sudan, Thursday, April 19, 2012. The Arab League said Thursday it would hold an emergency meeting over the increasing violence between Sudan and South Sudan.

KHARTOUM, Sudan -- Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir all but declared war against his newly independent neighbor on Thursday, vowing to teach South Sudan a "final lesson by force" after it occupied a disputed oil field.

South Sudan accused Bashir of planning "genocide" and said it would fight to protect its people.

Mounting violence since Sudan split into two countries last year has raised the prospect of two sovereign African states waging war against each other openly for the first time since Ethiopia fought newly independent Eritrea in 1998-2000.

Both are poor countries - South Sudan is one of the poorest in the world - and the dispute between them has already halted nearly all the oil production that underpins both economies.

South Sudan says Heglig oilfied reduced 'to rubble'

Appearing in medal-spangled military uniform at a large rally, Bashir danced side-to-side, waved his walking stick in the air and made blistering threats against the leadership of the South, which seceded last year after decades of civil war.

"These people don't understand, and we will give them the final lesson by force," the burly military ruler told the rally in El-Obeid, capital of the North Kordofan state. "We will not give them an inch of our country, and whoever extends his hand on Sudan, we will cut it off."

China, a major investor in the oil industry in both countries, expressed "serious concern" about the increase of tensions and called on both sides to stop fighting, "maintain calm and exercise maximum restraint".

A picture taken on April 17, 2012 shows burned buildings which are all that remain of an old Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) compound in Heglig, in Sudan.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said South Sudan's seizure of the oil field was an "illegal act" and called on both countries to stop fighting.

Bashir: South Sudan rulers are 'insects'
South Sudan separated from the rest of Sudan with Bashir's blessing last July under the terms of a 2005 peace deal. But since then violence has steadily escalated, fuelled by territorial disputes, ethnic animosity and quarrels over oil.

Birthday wish: 'Lost boys' pin hopes on independent South Sudan

Last week, South Sudan seized Heglig, a disputed oilfield near the border between the two countries, claiming it as its rightful territory and saying it would only withdraw if the United Nations deployed a neutral force there.

Sudan's armed forces spokesman Al-Sawarmi Khalid said by phone the army was now fighting "inside Heglig."

South Sudan's army (SPLA) said it had repulsed a large attack on Heglig on Wednesday evening, stopping Sudan's forces about 18 miles from the territory.

"The SPLA maintained its position," spokesman Philip Aguer said. He also accused Sudan of launching another attack in the border regions of South Sudan's Western Bahr al-Ghazal state.

In a sign of the conflict widening, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) - considered the most militarily potent of the rebel factions in Sudan's western Darfur region - claimed it had launched an assault on the al-Kharsana oil region near Heglig.

"We are surrounding the Sudanese army in the main military base in al-Kharsana," JEM spokesman Gibreel Adam Bilal said by phone. Heglig is hundreds of km away from JEM's bases in Darfur but the group has fought in the Kordofan region in the past.

The Sudanese army spokesman, Khalid, denied JEM's statement, saying there was no fighting in the al-Kharsana area.

Limited access for independent journalists to Sudan's remote conflict zones makes it difficult to confirm the often contradictory claims issued by all sides.

Sudanese Lost Boy Mawut Mayen talks about his life in America and what the new nation of South Sudan means to him.

African states have often waged war on each other's territory, but it is extremely rare for them to talk openly of fighting against government forces of sovereign neighbors.

Bashir's address to the rally on Thursday followed a fiery speech to party supporters on Wednesday, when he vowed to "liberate" South Sudan from its ruling party, which he repeatedly referred to as "insects", in a play on its Arabic name.

South Sudan's Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin responded on Thursday with outrage.

"Mr. President, we are no insects and if you are launching your genocide activities to the Republic of South Sudan to kill the people of South Sudan .... we can assure you we will protect the lives of our citizens."

However, he also said South Sudan was willing to resume talks immediately on all outstanding issues.

"The Republic of South Sudan is not in a state of war, nor is it interested in war with Sudan," he said.

In both speeches, Bashir vowed to retake the Heglig oilfield, which he said was part of Sudan's Kordofan region. But he also said that alone would not end the conflict.

"Heglig is not the end, but the beginning," he said in Thursday's speech.

It's bad enough that the bloodthirsty, morally bankrupt government of Sudan sytematically murdered 3,000,000 Christians and animists in the south before finally acquiescing to independence, but now Omar al-Bashir wants to go in and kill some more.

If he does, we ought to bomb every government building in Khartoum, along with al Bashir's palaces and favorite haunts, without going in with troops, and let him dig himself out.

Stop it....you people need to remember that there are men, women, and children who may be dying soon, all over some dictator POS who thinks he is something close to God...

And you think we have it so bad here...this man is a murderer who thinks nothing of wiping out his own people...and yes, they ARE his people. Just because they divided the country by North and South doesn't change that fact. Quit bitching about your own "terrible" life here and how our government is so bad, and maybe say a prayer for those who will lose their own lives over all this bull@!$%#.

Mankind is amazing in that it can accomplish, HAS accomplished so many things, yet it still hasn't learned to stop killing itself.

The USA should have stop at Bosnia that was it's first big mistake. Now people want them to stop now, ignoramous, this is big oil business. It has nothing to do with compassion, which is evident by most bloggers/posters on here. So what if they are christians, because most of the bloggers/posters on here claim to be christians, and they do not care about genocide against people of their own faith. The deal is Sudan is a oil rich company, china is playing sides, the USA doesn't want to be left out on this deal either (in the name of American interest). Now the Sudan has been divided, this is really a war between the USA & china, with the African chiefdoms, doing their bidding. This has nothing to do with the people, no foreign country ever has had what best for Africa and Africans interest in mind, and never will. The officials in Africa are so corrupt they just play along with their other countries corrupt officals, and the Africans are the pawn. Pretty much like us here in the USA, but because one group feels as if they are better, they fail to realize it, and nothing is done about it. We are all pawns, and even though you have posted your comment you will have no say in the matter, just brow beat your computer and move on, nothing to see here.

Cain and Able stuff if you ask me. I would hope that the Christians in the South are able to be at peace with their neighbors. If not it will the USA on another crusade. Oh yeah I forgot the USA doesn't care about Africa because it is worse than the middle east when it comes to trying to reason with the Muslims and Christians from those regions. I believe that religion is going to kill us all it is in our DNA.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said South Sudan's seizure of the oil field was an "illegal act" and called on both countries to stop fighting.

The UN and the African Union forces should bomb Bashir he is a racist dictator and religious fanatic guilty of mass genocide. Get rid of Bashir, he's a horrible leader for Sudan.

According to the article the Chinese have a large investment in this country. Yeah - because Clooney sidled up to him and begged him for 7 trillion to ship over there, and the fool did - against the best interests of the American people, and now here we are - losing homes, jobs, whatnot.

So - we all should be asking Mr. Clooney exactly what it is that he sees is so especially important over and above the extreme economic conditions here in the United States favoring Sudan that our American families should sacrifice our own valuable resources for their gain?

        Does that make sense?

To ask one nation to spend itself out in favor of another nation?

Because as the intelligent human being that I tend to be, what this surmounts to is asking one nation - your home nation, even - to starve itself in an act of benefiting a foreign nation because perhaps the "asker" is seeking to redistribute persons of a certain race around the world under a delusional sense of fairness as an influential international figure on global policy and "humanitarianism".

I think it is time for Mr. Clooney to answer a few questions from the Senate of the United States to that end since his substantial influence in sequential presidential administrations has caused this handing over of our vital resources to his favored nation in Africa.

You need to get your facts straight. Mr. Bush has nothing to do with Sudan or S. Sudan. He appears to have everything to do with everything you "think" (and I use that word very loosely) is wrong in this world. I must assume you are a socialist/marxist democrat. Crawl back into your corner and try and find an original thought.

You take sickening delight at the threatened slaughter of innocent Africans. Wasn't it enough that over 3,000,000 mainly Christian and other South Sudanese were systematically murdered by the government of Sudan over the past 30 years, usually for the dual 'crimes' of being Christian in a Muslim majority country and having darker skin than those in the north).

Would you be as thrilled to see anti-Christian genocide practiced in Europe, where there are twice as many people per square mile as in Africa?

If they decide to bring it to my door step i am legally empowered to defend myself with lethal force. either way it's inconsequential to me. i would just rather them do it themselves so that my time and money isn't wasted enforcing an unwanted and unsustainable peace.

Actually i have managed to get more than 55; 155; 1,055 and 10,055 miles from my place of birth. That being said, my place of birth is not the same place i consider my "Home Town" and i have gotten equally as far away from there as well. I've gotten to see other countries in the world, mostly in the conditions that Sudan presents. There is no helping those countries that are ruled by "elected" dictators unless the people there do something. otherwise the old get replaced with the new and they are exactly the same, just a new face to put to the terror. Let them to their devices and pull all aid and military support until after they sort it out themselves. Then decide if we, as a country, want to continue working with or assisting them after they figure out who's in charge and that they do or do not align with our beliefs. But good effort on trying to paint me as a "hometown hick" who doesn't know what really goes on in the world. I have basically "Been there, Done that" and i have no qualms letting them fight amongst themselves, it doesn't cost us anything to see what happens only to get involved.

Sudan is a Muslim majority contry. South Sudan is mainly Christian and animist. The government of Sudan murdered over 3 million southern Sudanese over the course of 3 million years largely because they were Christian and had darker skin than the Sudanese of the north.

This is the same Sudanese government that has raped or killed tens of thousands of Sudanese in the Dharfur region because the people of Dharfur have very dark skin.

                        Hide the checkbook

                        Let's see.

President Obama accomplished regime change in Libya at a cost of one billion dollars and no loss of American life. The former head of Libya is known to have actively carried out terrorist plots against American citizens and businesses, and he is known to have actively sought nuclear weapons, including very recently.

President Bush, with a last minute assist from President Obama, accomplished regime change in Iraq at a cost of thousands of American lives plus three trillion dollars and counting. Prior to regime change, Iraq had a secular government, Christians were allowed to live and worship in peace, there were no government ties to terrorists, and the government's former attempt to obtain nuclear weapons had been effectively shut down and there was no continuance.

Even if we acknowledge that both instances of regime change made the world a better place, which leader implemented the more cost effective course of action? President Bush spent $3,000 dollars for every one dollar spent by President Obama; and 2,000 American lives (4,500 soldiers) were lost in Iraq for every American life (two journalists) lost in Libya. That doesn't count the estimated 10,000 Libyans and 100,000 Iraqis who lost their lives.

No WONDER you're confused about how we got here!

Not meaning to pick up a bone of hate and discontent here, but it was CONGRESS ( with Republicans and Democrats alike) who sanctioned the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with Bush. Many conservatives, such as Pat Buchanan, had serious reservations about going into those countries from the get go.

And keep in mind if it weren't for Hillary's pushing for it, there's NO WAY Obama would have gotten us involved in Lybia. Yeah. One billion. All so that Europe can get Lybia's oil. What a bargain! (Sarc) Egypt is a whole 'nutter ball of wax, but like Lybia - it has NOW fallen in the hands of terrorist Islamofascicts (Read: Muslim Brotherhood). Wow. That's some regime change there.

And now Hillary and Biden want intervention in Syria along with Mc Cain. And IRAN is starting to manifest itself on the horizon. My point is, while the Republicans may largely own the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, don't kid yourself. The Democrats in Washington are MUCH bigger warmongers then they let on.

Of course it was because of those pesky WMD's Saddam had.

So when do our troops aka "UN peacekeeping force" become involved? Of course, we'll never hear about it. Just like we never hear about the other military action we're involved with.

They breed faster than they die unfortunately. Let the churches and bleeding hearts bring them here so we can have them killing each other here while living off the tax payer

                              Hey racist Willy,

How fast do you breed? Seems you haven't died off fast enough either. I suppose you are the taxpayer in this scenario? Then of course there are "they" who are living off you? Who are "they" exactly? Frankly, I don't want my tax money subsidizing your life on this planet, but unfortunatly, tax money subsidizes everyone, so I can't pick and choose.

You can do us all a favor by either never breeding, or stopping now, and dying off post haste. I think we have enough right wing racists in this country and can do with a few less.

So does suicide, but no one is ugly enough to ask you to kill yourself, and no one would be crass enough to cheer if you did.

They breed faster than they die unfortunately

So often we find that it's the real deadbeats that try to deflect criticism by claiming to be members of a 'superior' ethnic group. I get it. All your problems were caused by Africans here, killing each other while living off your generous tax payments, because, as we all know, Africans don't know how to work unless they are forced into slavery. Is that what you're trying to tell us, Willy?

From here it looks like the only thing sicker than your twisted, anti-social philosophy of death are it's unChristian, unscientific, and unAmerican underpinnings.

I suppose the lessor of two evils is the South Sudan.

War is as inevitable as the rain.

Bashir needs to be exterminated. Remember Darfur. Also, Bashir's troops killed a lot of people in the South. How much did we spend there? Some jack-ass said 7 trillion!!! He/she needs to keep away from these pages.

The reason some people want the US involved there is because of humanitarian reasons, and yet others because of empire. There are oil companies that want us involved in Sudan, just so they can get their paws on the oil and chop out the Chinese.

Y'all. Sad pictures, once again. The same stuff probably went on when they only had clubs and spears (and no petroleum), perhaps more for tribal differences. Everyone suffers more now with all those arbitrary state borders and with the modern tools of war. So, it's of great importance to help these folks avoid outright war. But not to worry, the UN and Arab League are on it. We'll see how that works out. Predictably, there'll be an increase in sinecures for diplomatic staff, academicians will get a few new grants/publications, arms merchant nations should be in the pink, and the world media will have in on the blood feedbag,---but who really thinks any of this will keep the peace? To "keep" the peace, it often takes boots on the ground, typically in strength enough to be paid respect (feared) by the local hot heads. Hope I'm wrong. Aaltarboy.

When Obama is voted out of office I guess we can give all the credit to George Bush for doing it. He has been blamed for everything else.

Obama has done more damage to the American economy and our Healthcare system than anyone and needs to be run out of our Oval Office so we can get a real President in their.
