Russian ships arriving in China for naval war game

Russian missile cruiser Varyag is shown in this 2009 photo docked at Qingdao port, China's Shandong Province.

The Russian guided-missile cruiser Varyag arrived at an east Chinese naval base Saturday ahead of a planned joint exercise with the Chinese navy, news agency Xinhua reported.

The large-scale war game, the navies’ first bilateral drill, is scheduled Sunday through Friday off the resort city of Qingdao in the Yellow Sea, Xinhua said.

Russia also sent from Vladivostok three Udaloy class destroyers and three support ships, said Russian news agency Ria Novosti.

China will use 16 ships, including destroyers, frigates and two submarines, in the drill called Maritime Cooperation-2012, Ria Novosti said.

A Chinese aircraft carrier may also participate, the International Business Times said.

“The exercises will involve several simulated missions, including the rescue of a hijacked ship, the escort of a commercial vessel, and the defense a convoy from air and sea attacks,” a Russian military spokesman told the news agency.

The exercise will promote strategic coordination and mutual trust between the two militaries, said Chen Bingde, Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Chen also said the drill would strengthen the naval forces' ability to jointly confront new regional threats and maintain peace and stability in the region and world.

Since 2005, China and Russia have conducted several joint military exercises within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which also includes the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Filipino protesters demanding that China pull out of the contested Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea demonstrate Friday outside the Chinese Embassy in Makati City in Manila, Philippines.

The new drill comes after President Barack Obama last November signaled a "return to Asia" following a decade of conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

On Monday, the U.S. and Philippine military launched joint exercises involving in the South China Sea between the Philippines and China. The exercise includes 4,500 U.S. troops and 2,300 Filipino troops in a two-week event called "balikatan," or shoulder-to-shoulder, the Voice of America reported.

The Philippines, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing claims in the South China Sea, Voice of America said.

China and the Philippines are in a standoff over fishing rights in the area. China's most advanced fishing patrol vessel, the Yuzheng 310, arrived Friday in waters off the coast of Scarborough Shoal, China and VOA said.

Xinhua reported the vessel will conduct routine patrols in the area to “protect China's sea rights and ensure the safety of Chinese fishermen.” The Philippines tried to arrest Chinese fisherman in the shoal, but Chinese surveillance ships intervened.

Late Friday, China said authorities released 21 Vietnamese fishermen whom they had detained for more than a month on a disputed island in the South China Sea.

Chinese security forces intercepted the fishermen’s two boats in early March near the Paracel islands, known in China as the Xisha Islands.

The Paracels are occupied by China but also claimed by Vietnam.

The world needs to continue fighting US colonialism! americans won't stop until they hoard all the oil and natural resources around the world, and rule over each and every country.

Yes, the U.S. currently hoards all the oil and rare earth minerals and all the other resources. Plus we currently control every government on earth. Also we control the moon.

This must stop.

There are International Laws that dictate the limits of a countries claims to resources...

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea - Part VI

Article 76 of UNCLOS specifies a mechanism for extending the limits of the continental shelf beyond the 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ). After ratification of UNCLOS a country has ten years to collect the appropriate information and submit a claim for an extended continental shelf to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS).

AC Robertson is partially right but is also concealing some important truth-- his habitual voluntary memory lost at the most convenient time.

As oil has been discovered in the Artic Circle, several nations including the USA have claimed their continental shelves extend far into the reaches of the Circle. These self-serving claims, based mostly on a definition of continental shelves, are exposing the ambiguity and flaws of the current formula in allocating resources and establishing the limits of underwater interest.

More than ten years after oil was first discovered in the Artic Circle, several nations are still engaged in contentious debate as to how far continental shelves extend into the Artic; what definition shall be used; and by what formula shall be used to determine the limits of underwater rights. As patience grows thin, some nations such as Russia and USA have sent warships to the Artic as a modern day claim-jumper. The Russians even planted an underwater flag near the North Pole to demonstrate their resolve and negotiation skills.

Of course, AC Robertson makes it so simple. He yells out UN this and UN that. Did it ever occurs to him that the UN is a convenient tool of the USA?

You need a history lesson. The Russians under the former Soviet Union and the Communist Chinese combined are resposnbile for 100 million plus deaths. The new (old) Russia has designs on the Artic and they are on your northern border. The Chinese are investing 10+ percent of their GDP annually on military expansion. They want to become the next world power and they will do so through military power. The U.S. stopped the Germans in WWII and the Russians during the Cold War. We went into Iraq not for oil put to put down a despot that HAD USED WMDs on his own people and that was threathening every country in the Middle East.

Speak with a Russian citizen today and ask them what they think of their government. Speak to a Chinese citizen today and ask them what they think of their government. Check out what's happening in Iraq now that the U.S. has pulled troops out. History repeats itself and, based on what's happening around the globe, we're headed for WWIII. You better pick your sides carefully.

AC Robertson is either a shill for the Military Industrial Complex or a weapon profiteer, or both.

His persistent theme is that China is a big military power with plans to challenge USA. His favorite Chinese weapon is the FD-21d anti-missile which he claims is so potent that it has already sunk a US carrier before a naval architect inks a single drawing. His latest incantation is deep water harbors in Pakistan and Venezuela for China's blue ocean navy. As his previous claim that China is building 3 modern aircraft carriers has been hollow, AC now resorts to specious use of percentage to describe military spending in order to deceive naive readers.

The FD-21d is an obsolete missile, highly susceptible to US Navy's Aegis and Phalanx defense system. Congress refuse to fund another super nuke carrier when the US budget has exceeded its deficit ceiling. China does not have a blue ocean navy whereas the US Navy has the world's largest number of nuke carriers, missile cruisers, missile Frigates, destroyers, and nuclear ballistic and attack submarines fleets. China has not had a blue ocean navy in nearly 800 years- the last vessel paid a visit to the Horn of Africa then return home never to be seen again. Two of China's so called modern aircraft carriers under construction are fixer-uppers bought from Russian and Australian naval junk-yards. The third, also bought from Russian junk-yard, is under renovation as a future four star hotel similar to the Queen Mary docked at Long Beach, California. Instead of manipulating percentages, AC should state actual numbers when talking about military expenditures of these two countries.

Contrary to AC propaganda, China is not America's enemy. In fact, China is the biggest holder of US Treasury, at $1.3trillion Dollars, shoring-up the US economy during its most difficult time since the Great Depression. While USA is waging 4 wars around the world, China is at peace. China never waged war in Iraq using bogus WMD assertion. China never waged war in Afghanistan on the pretext that the Taliban is hosting Osama bin Laden. China never dropped bombs or launch commando raids in Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan or Iraq. And China doesn't have military bases world wide whereas USA does.

AC knows this and more. But he has his own self-serving agenda to promote, even if at the expense of naive readers.

Readers should know that AC has been 'busted' many times in the past.

Chris from Yucaipa, It is true that America’s nuclear sub fleet is unmatched in the world today. However, other nations have the ability to continue to develop their own weapon systems too. Russia has some ability to hunt and destroy nuclear submarines. China’s strategy is cost effective. China’s Dongfeng 21D anti-ship ballistic missile program is cost effective. Going to war against the joint forces of Russia and China will not be a walk in the park. We disarmed Iraq before we attacked them with “Shock and Awe.” China and Russia have not been disarmed.

ac robertson attempts to instill fear among the readers of the growing "menace" of China's military development and cited China has a double digit annual increase. Yet China only spent a mere 1.4% of her gdp on defense as contrasts to the 4% of US. (in real money terms, China $110 billion vs US $700 billion) .

The volume speaks itself. China has waged no war of aggresssion on false pretence and established no military bases outside her own territory. China seeks no hegemony and does not dictate what others should and should not do; but foremost china does not interfere in other nations' internal affair.

Taiwan and China both claim each other's sovereignty. It's none of any outsider's business. Vietnam is now terrorizing Taiwan in South China Sea. Both Taiwan and China are now discussing joining their forces to defend China against outsider. So where is the "threat" of China to Taiwan?

Get some education? Are you seriously going to post some retarded version of Tibetan history and claim it as the truth? Tibet was its own empire over 2,000 years ago. It had complete control over it's territory up until the early 1900's after which China began pushing in and eventually seizing control in 1951.

As for Vietnam 'terrorizing' Taiwan, that's about the most retarded comment I've seen this week. China has claimed huge and unrealistic portions of the South China Sea as theirs. In some cases laying claim to everything up to where the water meets the sand in some places. The one major engagement over this in 1988 resulted in 2 sunk Vietnamese frigates and 70 dead sailors.

Every defense contractor in the US overcharges the DOD at every opportunity susequently it cost substantially more for military hardware in the US than any other country. The result is China can built up its military at a much lower cost and more of it than the US can for the same amount of money. Money that we give them. Besides China doesn't have to deal with Unions, Pension Plans, Medical Plans, work rules, contractor profit etc.

Expect China to take back Taiwan within 10yrs and we won't be able to do anything about it.

The UN is still recognizing Tibet as a OCCUPIED Nation...

International law states that recognition of a nation can occur by explicit or implicit acts including treaties, negotiations, and diplomatic relations. Mongolia and Tibet signed a formal treaty of recognition in 1913. Historically, Nepal and Tibet had peace treaties. Tibetºs independence was also confirmed at the Treaty of Simla (1914) which was concluded by Tibet and British India. In 1949, Tibet maintained diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations with such countries as Nepal, Sikkim, Mongolia, China, British India, and to some extent, Russia and Japan. Further, Nepal maintained an Ambassador in Lhasa and told the U.N. in 1949 that it conducted international relations with Tibet. In fact, Britian, Bhutan, India, and even China also maintained diplomatic missions in Tibet's capitol, Lhasa. The Tibetan Foreign Office conducted talks with President Franklin D. Roosevelt when he sent representatives to Lhasa to discuss the allied war effort against Japan during World War II.

In 1950, El Salvador formally requested that China's aggression against Tibet be placed on the agenda of the U.N. General Assembly. The issue was not discussed. However, during four U.N. General Assembly debates on Tibet (1959, 1960, 1961, & 1965), many countries (e.g., Philippines, Nicaragua, Thailand. United States, Ireland) openly stated that Tibet was an independent country illegally occupied by China. In fact, the U.N. passed three resolutions (1959, 1961, & 1965) concerning Tibet stating that Tibetans were deprived of their inalienable rights to self-determination.

Even Mao Zedong during the Long March admitted that Tibet was an independent country when he passed through the border regions of Tibet remarking, "This is our only foreign debt, and some day we must pay the Mantzu (sic) and the Tibetans for the provisions we were obliged to take from them."

Prior to Mao, China had signed severial treaties with Tibet. In the Tibetan capital of Lhasa, a stone obelisk erected in AD 823 features a treaty between China and Tibet. It is still there, for ALL to see and read...

"The DF-21D Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile (ASBM) is in play again in the press and implicitly linked in comments by the Vice Chairman of the Joint Staff that cancellation of at least one of the Ford-class carriers and retirement of some number of others is being considered by DoD ( would note, however, that to draw a straight line between the two is a little simplistic). Surfacing this discussion was the publication of an article in the Taipei Times (14 July edition) last week that led to a good bit of churn on this side of the Pacific..."

First off, in full scale warfare, Super Carriers are nothing but BFT's (Big FF'ing Targets) Since about 1960 that's all they have ever been. All a carrier is good for today is conventional power projection in a limited war scenario.

They fulfill the old power projection role of the battleship like in the '20's and '30's, the first thing tacticly decided in naval warfare in WWII was that the battleship was nothing but a BFT. They didn't survive practicaly past the '50's

The Aircraft Carrier will not survive past the next world war.

This being said, the carrier will fare fairly well against anti-ship missiles, The Gatling gun phalanx is being retired in the navy and is listed as a secondary standard, a much improved weapon is replacing it in the same mount, 2.5MW lasers, even more accurate, at much greater range, almost instant retraining and no ammunition overhead or limitation. (never runs out) the Aircraft Carrier is virtually immune to enemy aircraft or sea skimming missiles.

This also being said, they are toasty little bits for 60kt nuclear tipped homing torpedoes. (standard soviet naval torpedo) And yes, each and every US navy carrier battle group is still tailed by a russian nuclear attack submarine.

Boy you guys sure don't keep up on military strategic or tactical developments do you?

Raytheon married-up 6 - 32 kilowatt solid state lasers to the Navy’s Phalanx close-in defense system and used it to shoot down four aerial drones off the West coast.

Raytheon is currently testing the system and expects that the system won't hit the front lines until 2016.

              Read more: http://defensetech.org/2010/07/19/farnborough-raytheons-navalized-laser-fries-aerial-drone/#ixzz1tWLIHf2l
              Defense.org

They have demonstrated they can shoot down something going about 100+MPH on a clear day, with ZERO thermal protection. Mounting a low-power laser on a 1970's launch/target system, proves NOTHING...

After 50+years or R&D, there are still ZERO deployed laser weapons systems. With many operational limitations; charge times, ship movement & trageting a hyper-sonic missile threats, energy requirements, and clouds/haze/water-vapor laden environment that disperse the coherent light/energy, are just a few of the REAL LIFE problems...

The DF-21d is operational, curently being mass produced, and has been deployed for over two+years. The western Navies have less than 25+operational aircraft carriers. The odds are against the carriers and any other large ship within range, off the Chinese Coast..

The DF-21 exploits the phalanx or CWIS weaknesses:

              1. They have limited rounds about 1500 per load = about 30 seconds of fire time...

              2. Tracking problems when exposed to high angles of attack...

              3. Limited ability to target multiple high-speed threats...

              4. The carriers can not hide that large flat deck from space based tracking systems...

              5. The current thinking is 5 simultaneous launched DF-21d's will GUARANTEE a fatal strike...

Yet another case of changing the facts to fit an agenda. I would highly suggest you actually go verify your information before just parroting yet another birther claim.

"Ms. Hill then said that the PDF document wasirrelevant to the case at hand, and conceded that Obama never once gave his birth certificate, or any good copy of it, hard or soft, to the New Jersey Secretary of State or the Division of Elections. Hill then claimed that New Jersey law did not force Obama to give anything to qualify himself for a primary ballot, and that New Jersey residents could nominate Mickey Mouse if they could get enough signatures to nominate him.

The Tea Party Tribune, and other media organs quoting them, construed this as saying that Alexandra Hill “admitted that the Obama birth certificate is a forgery.” That is not correct. "

Did you ever call the birth certificate fake? No.

RC yeah China has a huge population to support and even with the one child policy the people are still trying to have more than one child. The truth of the matter is that even one child is too many given their resources. America has fewer people but uses a tremendous amount of power and with the world Mexico etc using America as a place to run to when their own country has exceeded its carrying capacity it won't be long before we also will be in the same boat. The worlds leaders know this and quite frankly I think they will either use biological warfare or some other form of war to reduce population. Yet far too many people continue to live with rose colored glasses and see having as many children as they want as acceptable. It goes beyond selfish or ignorant it is self destructive.

Worse yet, we are raising so many cowards that their job will not be as difficult as it was when most regular Americans were willing to fight for what was theirs. Now the libs will simply turn it over to them to avoid a conflict or hurting their feelings.

And if you have been paying attention India just test fired a long range rocket so for China and Russia to have excercises is very reasonable. You all would make the same decision if you were in command there. I would. On the same point we have them all over the world and remember China and Russia share a common border. I do not know what you all are making a big deal over.

Not sure why China wouldn't want to have coorperative exercises with Russia. They're allies from way back and share a chunk of Asia. Makes sense really. The maps are being redrawn, alliances are being reassessed. Nothing is forever - Alfa Dogs can't be alfa dogs forever.

We'll see China emerge before too long as the dominant economy and dominant warriors going forward. Most of the west is broke. Global enterprise could care less about that. Cheap labor and new markets to exploit trumps any national loyalties. Get used to that idea folks. We made this.

No, the UN will emerge as the one world power. Lots of war to get there, but they will be the new world economy, energy resource, food chain distribution, health managment, and military. I don't know if China and Russia will oblige and surrender to it, or fight it.

Both Democrats and Republicans, have been working on this transition to globalization and the New World Order. Or even after all of that effort, America could get wiped out.

If the Chinese and Russians wanted to throw bodies at the US we would never be able to stop them, especially if you include the Indians and Muslims. There simply to many. Its time to utilize the 2 big blue oceans that divide us. Bring all the troops home, end free trade, establish stronger ties with South America and prepare for a better future for our kids.

Afer all they are all of chinese descent and they defeated China in 1979 when China sent 100K troops for Vietnam invading Cambodia. China lost 20% of it's regular army force in a month while fighting para-military and Vietnamese militias because all Vietnam's experience fighters were busy in Cambodia. China might have the sheer numbers but they have lost every battles they fought against their neighbors in the last few centuries!

Russia and China conduct military exercises. We are the idiots at war for 11 years because we have a patent on morality and want to be the policeman of the world. The international cop is going straight to bankruptcy. Russia and Chinia are our creditors. They will be running the world, Americans are suicidal.

America continues unabated starting wars and destabilizing the world. The world will be more stable if China and Russia make a full military alliance. I hope that other nations will join an alliance with Russia and China to help keep world peace.

Now the US better pay attention to this drill coming up with China and the Russians. They are preparing a possible attack on the US. Do to the last secret talks with Kenya Boy Obama he is probably aware of this drill in advanced notice by his friendly comrade the Russians. Possibly to topple the United States. The Chinese is calling in its I Owe You. The United Nations is the calibrator to both sides.. Will listen for sounds and tremors. I smell a stink-en fish.

                                            Help Please!

I try to read the MSNBC language but sometimes I still have trouble comprehending some terms and statements.

and the defense a convoy from air and sea attacks,”

Would I be correct in assuming they are saying "and defending a convoy from air and sea attacks."?

Could someone please translate for me? I guess I'm still a novice at speaking MSNBC.

Arthur, you are not from China, your from another planet. Maybe you did not hear of Russia's war in Chechnya or the unprovoked attacks on Georgia and maybe you missed China's intimidation of Vietnam, Japan and most of their other nieghbors? Maybe you haven't noticed the threats China issues to India and Taiwan? Have you heard what they have done to the Dalli Lama and his homeland? Maybe you missed the justified fear that Poland and other Eastern European countries have of Russia. I can not help but be amazed by your ignorance.

If foxnews told you that you were a girl, you would be in a dress and high heels by sundown.

Because of our large naval fleet, I believe Russia and China feel they need to be allies in case of a war with us. If they are trying to intimidate us, it's not going to work.

I think the Russian ships are in the Chinese port to pick up replacement parts. Those ships were probably made in China too.

I heard the North Koreans are going to provide their expertise on missile launches for these excercises.

Would that be anything like a guy with untreated erectile dysfunction explaining how he gets women every night?
