Red Cross doctor found beheaded in Pakistan

Arshad Butt / AP

Pakistani security officials stand next to covered body of British Red Cross worker Khalil Rasjed Dale at the site in Quetta, Pakistan on Sunday.

QUETTA, Pakistan —The beheaded body of a kidnapped British doctor working for the International Committee of the Red Cross was found by the roadside on Sunday in the southwestern Pakistan city of Quetta, police and Red Cross officials said.

Khalil Rasjed Dale, 60, was abducted by suspected militants on Jan 5 while on his way home from work.

"The ICRC condemns in the strongest possible terms this barbaric act," ICRC Director-General Yves Daccord said in a statement. "All of us at the ICRC and at the British Red Cross share the grief and outrage of Khalil's family and friends."

British Foreign Secretary William Hague also condemned the killing.

"This was a senseless and cruel act, targeting someone whose role was to help the people of Pakistan, and causing immeasurable pain to those who knew Mr. Dale," Hague said in the statement.

A senior police officer said the Pakistan Taliban had claimed responsibility for the killing, saying a ransom had not been paid.

Police discovered Dale wrapped in plastic near a western bypass road. His name was written on the white plastic bag with black marker.

A sharp knife was used to sever his head from the body," said Safdar Hussain, the first doctor to examine the body. "He was killed about 12 hours ago."

Dale is only the third Westerner killed in such a fashion in Pakistan. The others include Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002 and Piotr Stanczak, a Polish geologist, in 2009.

The Pakistan Taliban has been fighting a bloody insurgency against the Pakistani state since its formation in 2007. It is close to al Qaida and it claimed credit for a failed car bomb attempt in New York's Times Square in May 2010.

Quetta is the capital of southwestern Baluchistan, Pakistan's biggest but poorest province, where Baluch separatist militants are fighting a protracted insurgency for more autonomy and control over the area's natural resources.

Pro-Taliban militants are also active in the province, which shares borders with Afghanistan and Iran.

Dale had worked for the ICRC and the British Red Cross in Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq before coming to Pakistan. He had been managing a health program for Baluchistan for almost a year when he was abducted, the ICRC statement said.

"We are devastated," Daccord said. "Khalil was a trusted and very experienced Red Cross staff member who significantly contributed to the humanitarian cause."

ONLY THE THIRD WESTERNER TO DIE IN SUCH A MANNER!!!!!!! Does any one else see the absurdity of this statement? One person murdered is an atrocity!!!!!!!!! My God, has the press become so inured by the violence it refuses to see the idiocy of the statement: "Only the third westerner to die in such a manner."

I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I
can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and
daughters for their family "honour"; of Muslims rioting over some slight
offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't
"believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning
teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the
genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and
Shari’s law tells them to. These people are nothing less than savages, and should be epilated by any means .

It's all in the interpretation of their religious books. When they insert their own personalities, opinions and hopes of power they have obliterated the original context of what MIGHT have been a religion of peace centuries ago. Think of the Koran as a flash drive meant to guide...right up until an extremist makes a copy of that thumb drive and inserts a virus completely corrupting the data. You now have an extremist Koran which has been re-written and is now a new religion on an old idea. One remains a religion of peace, one remains a religion of hate and you cannot know which you are facing until it blows up in your face.

The virus has been allowed to spread too far and too wide to completely obliterate. This is our new world. Strategy and strategic location is key to keeping this virus out of this country. The war games have changed and our survival depends on our ability to change with it.

Well they are certainly sending a message to all doctors, reporters and geologists to stay out of their way. Just a thought, they might be better suited to send those messages to the guys with guns who keep shooting at them. What a group of fearsome fighters to be revered by all of the world. They are not afraid to take down any doctor, reporter, or geologist, so just watch out.

Red Cross is a viable business that is needed. But only to countries that value their services. This country can hide terrorists, and then take a handout of food, money and aid from other countries, but then cry foul for not getting an apology. Does the family of the dead red cross worker get an apology. Pakistan is notorious for smiling in your face, while holding a machete behind their backs. Get out of the country, and let them do what they do best. Rape and kill innocent women, and children, steal from america's resources in the form of aid, make those that oppose them just dissapear. Let them wallow in their own mess for awhile, and all assistance should cease immediately.

Dr. Khalil Rasjed Dale was obviously a very brave and selfless man to have been actively pursuing his chosen field in such a dangerous place. My heart goes out to those who survive him.

The international community needs to stop pussy footing around with the Taliban. Exterminate all of them. Make no distinction between the fighters or the villages and governments that support Islamic extremism. They are a cancer that must be eradicated from the world.

Does this tell you what these people are about. They are still living in the 2nd century and have no regard for human life... not that they ever did, but this barbaric act should offend the whole world... The Red Cross should count their loss and get out of this horrible country... as should our military... put sanctions on Afghanistan and let them wallow in their ignorance...

But I suspect there is some kind of financial (precious metals and/or drugs) gain that the world's top 1%ers are looking forward to that keeps us and the Red Cross operating in this backward country, or else why have a force there when you cannot trust the people, the military, the secret police or the government in Afghanistan... over 20% of NATO's deaths came from within the Afghan military complex...

They protected bin Laden for over 5 years while he was residing comfortably just down the street from the Afghan secret police training complex... well maybe secret police there is really an oxy moron... the terrorists are rampant within their military, secret police and government - and they know it, heck, we know it...

What a legacy in the world's history this country is painting for themselves - as well as all muslims and islamissts... humans around the world are progressing, but these sects/cults are regressing...

Isn't Islam just great? All you have to do is convert and, yippie ki yo, you're a medievalist living in the Dark Ages! You too can be a head-lopper, a sanctified pedophile, a hanger of gay men, a stoner of women and if you order within the next five minutes we'll send you a quart jar of acid to throw in the face of that little school girl who has pissed you off so thoroughly by getting an education. And, if you're the hundredth person to call, well send you your very own flame thrower so you can burn that entire school full of little girls to ashes! Don't wait, order now! Credit cards accepted!

          Banker

"Adieu" is French for farewell (goodbye is close enough). "Ado" is not a derivative of Adieu. It actually means "Heightened fuss or concern."

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adieu

          http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ado

There, you learned something. Now you are no longer grammar challenged in this respect.

With no further ado, I bid you adieu.

This is an act of pure evil, the entity that these muslims follow is "legion". When will people understand, that unless you convert and follow legion/islam, you are considered worthless and should be killed, enslaved, and least of all lied to. Think in terms of the "arab spring", a movement of the muslim brotherhood that this infested administration, whom have sold their souls to the dark side, are behind and are aiding and abetting. legion will cross all bounderies, will turn truth upside down, lies are now truths, and truths are now viewed as lies. Leave them to their hell on earth, leave their oil in their putried hands, they will implode/explode on their own. They are killing Christians left and right, and what has this repulsive administration done about it? Nothing, have said nothing, and are probably rejoicing about it. Indonesia is primarily dominated by legion/islam. Heaven come to our aid. My brothers and sisters, pray as you have never prayed before. islam is a religion of peace ONLY IF you are an islamist, or follower of legion.

@Bensgpa--Amen to that. At it's inception, Islam was spread by the sword. It emphasizes an intolerance of and arrogance toward all those who are not Muslim. Christianity was spread by preaching the gospel and survived Much persecution. It emphasizes humility and love of neighbor.

Oh, and one of the things Allah supposedly "revealed" to his prophet was that it was ok to consummate a marriage with a 9 yr. old girl. Her name was Aisha--one among a number of wives and concubines. Where I come from, they call that child sexual abuse. The values of this religion/cult are abhorrent.
