Blind activist Chen Guangcheng: Chinese officials threatened my wife

Updated at 10:50 p.m. ET: BEIJING -- In a visit to China on Thursday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton cautioned China to protect human rights, the Associated Press reported.

Without mentioning Chen Guangcheng, the blind Chinese dissident who sought refuge in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing for six days, Clinton said, “all governments have to answer to our citizens’ aspirations for dignity and the rule of law and that no nation can or should deny those rights.”

Only hours earlier, U.S. officials said they had extracted from the Chinese government a promise that Chen would join his family and be allowed to start a new life in a university town in China, safe from the rural authorities who had abusively held him in prison and house arrest for nearly seven years.

In her remarks, Clinton did not mention Chen by name, although she had spoken with him hours before when he left the embassy. In a statement she welcomed the resettlement as one that “reflected his choices and our values.”

This came after an interview Chen gave to the Associated Press on Wednesday from a hospital room in Beijing where he was taken for medical treatment, during which he said a U.S. official told him that Chinese authorities had threatened to beat his wife if he did not leave the embassy. He said he feared for his safety and wanted to leave.

In a separate interview with Britain's Channel 4 News, Chen said he wanted to go to any country that will take him and his family and added he's disappointed that American officials didn't stay at the hospital with him as he thought they would.

"Nobody from [the] embassy is here … I don't understand why. They promised to be here," he told Channel 4 News.

Chen also told NBC News that he asked the U.S. to take concrete steps to guarantee his safety.

The State Department denied much of the AP's account of what Chen said.

The blind Chinese activist at the center of a diplomatic tug-of-war between Washington and Beijing left the U.S. Embassy Wednesday morning to receive medical care and be reunited with his family. NBC's Ian Williams reports.

"At no time did any U.S. official speak to Chen about physical or legal threats to his wife and children. Nor did Chinese officials make any such threats to us," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told NBC News.

Chen was told his family would be sent back home if he stayed in the embassy, she said.

China censors 'Shawshank' as Clinton heads to Beijing amid dissident drama

"At every opportunity, he expressed his desire to stay in China, reunify with his family, continue his education and work for reform in his country.  All our diplomacy was directed at putting him in the best possible position to achieve his objectives," Nuland added.

Chen's plight has overshadowed high-level talks on economic and international issues due to begin Thursday. The United States hopes the negotiations will encourage greater Chinese cooperation on trade as well over Iran, Syria, North Korea and other international disputes.

Who is Fu? Chinese exile is 'God's double agent'

In what earlier appeared to be a deal to end the diplomatic tussle between the U.S. and China over his future, Chinese authorities promised he would be relocated to a safe environment where he could study at a university, a U.S. official said, speaking prior to Chen's comments.

Chen, who went to the embassy after making a daring escape from house arrest on April 21, ran afoul of local government officials in China for exposing forced abortions and other abuses. His dogged pursuit of justice and mistreatment by authorities brought him attention from the U.S. and foreign governments, and earned him supporters among many ordinary Chinese.

Chen may have been forced to accept what he's offered, according to Zeng Jinyan, a long-time friend of Chen's family and also a human rights activist. Zeng has been tweeting about Chen's latest situation since Wednesday evening, some in Chinese, some in English, according to NBC News.

Chinese crackdown on dissident's family and friends

According to Zeng, Chen was unwilling to leave the American embassy but had no choice because his wife and two children would be sent back to Shandong province if he insisted on staying. It is not known when and how they arrived in Beijing, but Chen's wife Yuan Weijing told Zeng that local government in Shandong province installed security cameras inside her home and moved in, waiting for her and the children if Chen didn't agree to leave the embassy. Yuan also said she was arrested on April 27th when they found out Chen has escaped.

Teng Biao, a lawyer who's been assisting Chen in the past few years, tweeted about his conversation with Chen Wednesday afternoon, asking Chen "I've heard you were threatened, is that true?" Chen said, "Yes, very true. People from the Foreign Ministry said this afternoon, if you didn't leave the embassy, your wife and children would have been sent back to Shandong." In the same conversation, Chen said the Shandong officials who escorted his family are still in Beijing.

Blind dissident’s case a 'hot potato' for US-China

Meanwhile, Chinese government is taking a more hard-lined attitude on the case, demanding an apology from the American government.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said: "It should be pointed out that Chen Guangcheng, a Chinese citizen, was taken by the U.S. side to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing via abnormal means, and the Chinese side is strongly dissatisfied with the move."

Chinese activist activist Chen Guangcheng (left) is seen in a wheelchair pushed by a nurse at the Chaoyang hospital in Beijing Wednesday.

He stressed that China demands that the United States thoroughly investigate the event, hold relevant people accountable and ensure that such an event does not happen again. "What the U.S. side has done has interfered in the domestic affairs of China, and the Chinese side will never accept it," said the spokesman.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton -- who arrived in Beijing Tuesday ahead of the talks -- said that the case had been handled "in a way that reflected his choices and our values" -- comments made before Chen's remarks that he feared for his and his family's safety.

She said it was crucial to ensure that Beijing kept its pledge to leave him unmolested. "The United States government and the American people are committed to remaining engaged with Mr. Chen and his family in the days, weeks, and years ahead," Clinton added.

Chen's supporters said last Friday that he had escaped after 20 months of house arrest and gone into U.S. government protection.

Seeing as we're basically being robbed of our wealth, our know-how, our jobs, and everything else that once made America great, why exactly is it that our politicians seen so determined to maintain this situation? It seems to me that our politicians are either grossly incompetent or are bought by the special interests that have a vested interest in seeing America decline. We should stand by the ideals that made us great - freedom and democracy. It is immoral to put anythig else first.

What is going on in the world today? Is the entire planet really spinning into sheer distress or is the internet/media/news just so friggin hopped up on the "insanely scary news is the only worthy news" pills that the world only "seems" to be about to implode?

We should stand by the ideals that made us great - freedom and democracy --GCV

Practicing democracy, Americans have embraced socialism and elected socialist politicians to fill almost all key government positions. For nearly 70 years, America has steadily declined as socialist politicians tax-and-spend until America is so broke she has to borrow from the Chinese. Once the world's greatest creditor, America, today, is the world's greatest debtor.

"Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose"--Janis Joplin

When politicians want to be re-elected or wage war, buzz words like "Freedom" or its cousin, "Liberty" are spoken liberally without any context. And the masses, ignorant of their own American history, surge forth with raw emotion in response to the mere utterance of "Freedom' and 'Liberty' as if these were magic words with the power to seduce a trance. Seduction works because the American people want it to work. Is it any wonder so many Americans are coming home in body bags draped in the American flag?

Dude...nobody robbed our jobs, our corporations yeah, the ones the republicans are trying to protect took them to China for better profits since their wage sare so low and ours sooo high, second is not our business to dictate how other countries deal with their citizens just like we they should not dictate on how we treat our prisoners. Our corporations went global, their greediness is so much that they rather close all ther factories here than missing a quarter profit. That my friend is what stole our jobs. That and of course the price of doing business over here. Our standard of living is way high compared to the rest of the world and only immigrants will do cheap labor. The rest wanst big $$$ for the labor and that increases labor cost. Taxes are aslo increased to improve infrastructure, all our homes have basic services compared to villages in China that most of their residents still use bicycles and have no sewage.

china doesn't care about human rights or freedom of speech, what china cares most is the stability of their communist regime in china. It's useless that US keep on mentioning human rights issue to china leaders because it against their communist core ideology that emphasize more on dictatorship rather on human rights.

On December 31, 2011, President Obama signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act which allows indefinite detention of terrorism suspects without charge, and the jailing of American citizens without trial. It also takes terrorism-related cases out of the hands of the FBI and the civilian court system and hands them over to the military.

The sorry translation to what really transpired is that the man, inspite of being blind, somehow managed to escape, but then our wonderful socialist -in-chief and his secretary of state, (code named,"Cookie Baker"), caved to their Chinese Communist comrades and betrayed yet another freedom seeker, kicking him out and leaving him to his fate at the hands of an ,oh ,soooo, understanding, communist regime ,it seems Dems are really good at that doesn't it, Remember the little boy from Cuba that Cookie's husband, (code named,Sweet Willie the Red), literally had snatched from the arms of his relatives at gun point, and sent back to that workers paradise, Cuba, but, not to worry, The ChiComs promised to take this man that embarrassed them so much, somewhere,......... ,"safe",.........yeah,.............. makes You proud to be an American don't it.

Robert -

the republicans are trying to protect took them to China for better profits since their wage sare so low and ours sooo high

I lost my automotive sector job in 2005 when production was taken from my plant and replaced with parts imported from South Korea. We supplied the "big 3"with 95% of our manufacturing. GM was our largest buyer of parts with about 40% of our products being for them. In case you didn't know, GMis a union stronghold, with an estimated 90% of them regularly voting democrat. Those union controlled companies shipped our jobs to Asia... The plant had over 900 employees at that time. Today is still operates, but with only 175 employees. We had a total of 5 plants in our operation. Today there are 3 remaining, with a total of 25% of their original workforce.

We were union - they were union. We voted democrat - they voted democrat...

How can you say this is a "republican" thing...??? Seriously, this is NOT an "us against them" problem. The political strategy has always been to divide and conquer. It has always been 'us against the man'. It has always been 'management vs. employees'. That is utter garbage. It is something everyone caters to. "How can we maximize our margins"? "How can we sell more GM vehicles and take market share from Chrysler"? It is an important issue both sides fail to look beyond the next earnings report on - for the sake of a buck.

no one can say it better GVC, "special interest" is what our politicians and you know who, is allowing to keep the US alive, nothing good will come of this situation when our leaders and the president are so determined to destroy it, at our expense. they forgot to ask us if this is what we wanted. doesn't this make you proud to be an American? we need to vote ourselves, the working middle class into office and get these goon's out. we can't afford any more misleadership, misrepresentation, mismanagement, missed opportunities, malingering government, and we certainly cannot afford to let this bananaramaobama have another four years to complete his destruction of this country. he's done enough damage already that will cause us to the end of this decade to recover from. he wants to be re-elected in a bad way. look at his campaign trail, where is he focusing, same group as the last time. oh by the way, wonder if he repaid the financier of his most current campaign? i bet not. because he is top bananaramaobama, he probably thinks this does not apply to him. we need to watch him closely and make sure he does not get another term in office!

The problem with this country is not one party or the other it's the Unions trying to milk every buiness dry. And the Corporations that have no problem at all moving jobs out of the country for the sake of saving 25 cents. We need to stop blaming the Dems or the Repubs and start demanding that Unions and Corps do buiness in the best interest of the people. Rob & Concernedone,

I would like to see us look at things like charging a tariff on imported goods for countries that do not meet certain wage/environmental standards - I wouldn't go as strict as our standards, but something to encourage other countries to ensure their workers are treated better - and help build their middle class, thereby creating more customers for our goods.

I would also put rules that say x% of manufacturing costs must be incurred in the US (or pay a penalty). If I remember correctly, Bush 1 did this for car manufacturers and it worked well.

I'm sure there are lots of other things we can do, but the general idea is to create an environment that encourages manufacturers to produce in the US - instead of our current approach which basically encourages them to produce in the low cost countries.

I find it rather astonishing that the U.S. can sympathize with a Chinese protester so deeply as to give him refuge, but sanctions the beating and pepper spraying of protesters at home. I guess the U.S. wouldn't mind if Occupiers sought refuge in the Chinese embassy & asked the Chinese to help them from getting beaten and shot with bean bags.

Should we congratulate them for thier stupidity? No we wouldn't mind at all if the occupiers ran to the Chinese Embassy to seek asylum. Hopefully they would all be taken to China for "thier own protection".

And let this be a lesson to the world, don't go to a US embassy asking for Asylum in any country where Obama and crew just might "make a deal". Our proud tradition of protecting those who are persecuted has become "Let's Make a Deal" under this administration. If the seals had told Obama while looking for Bin Laden, he would have stopped the operation before it got to time to say Yes or No to their going to get him. He would probably have made a deal. Rob-1699252,

"unions milking every business dry"? Total union membership as a function of total labor force = 11.4%

Total private sector union membership is now under 7%. So for the life of me I can not understand your statement quoted above. 7% is insignificant when compared to other economic influences. I believe the "habit of hatred" is ingrained far too deeply in the American mind.

Insofar as the "good or evil" of unionism - here is some food for thought - would you want your kids taught by "educators" earning poverty level wages? What kind of quality education would they get with that level of educator in today's economy? My mother was a teacher for 40+ years, her salary in 1955 based on inflation would be in 2010 8.05 times that amount. What costs 10,000 in 2010 would have cost $1267 or 7.89 time less. This was prior to the NEA or any other teacher's union. The net real gain from 1955 to 2010 is, 0.16% over the past 57 years (inclusive of union "gains") Factor in union dues and base purchasing power then and now are at best a wash.

Run your parents salary against cost of living then factor inflation you will find that insofar as $$$$$ is concerned union or no union makes no difference.Where unions have made a difference is in workplace safety and healthcare along with child labor laws. I grant you it costs money to have a safe work place but isn't everyone "entitled" to that?

Please do not knock / blame unions for this nation's ills - everyone of us is guilty of that because we voted politicians into positions of leadership, politicians whose sole stock in trade is lying, cheating and pinching babies butts. VOTE SMART IN NOVEMBER

Concernedone - I liked your post as well because YOU realized the blame isn't with any one party. Well done.

Every politician MUST try to please those he/she represents. All issues aren't weighted the same and they fluctuate with intensity. The possibility of agreeing 100 percent with a representative is impossible. We shouldn't expect such high standards.

For years, I have been represented by two democrat senators. One has just been plodding along and thankfully is retiring. The other was left of Obama and had a strong following for many years. However, after all those years how as the landscape? Lousy. Less jobs than when he started. So he got booted even though my state is blue. I probably wrote to him way more than anybody else because I thought he would stand for his principles against some of the gimmicks implemented by Obama. Clearly he was not part of the Obama team, but in the past under Bush he was extremely outspoken to the left because frankly I think he believed what he was saying. I strongly disagreed, but I felt he was really representing his true views. When Obama got in office he shrank back, and let nonsense prevail. This was a man intending to run for that office someday. He did vote against certain things and cried foul, but the Obama machine proved way too nimble for him and thus he lost his seat because he quite being who he had been in the past. The thing is he wanted to get re-elected again and so he chose to just go along with things that were not solutions. He lost.

I rarely agreed with Ted Kennedy. He turned out to be very left of JFK that I once admired. The thing is though Teddy worked hard. He may have been wrong on some issues, and with Bush went over the line to be disrespectful, but he was often the one helping write the legislation. He was at least putting his ideas forward for the public to view and decide.

Paul Ryan, love him or hate him, he is a worker bee as well. Sadly, there are not many because they fear retaliation from the media and this WH. My democrat senator that lost, feared the Obama machine because his voice within the party was a threat. See how this goes? I admire the worker bees even if I don't agree. I at least know they are alive and trying even if they fail or are wrong.

Private unions have diminished because they frankly did not save their own jobs. As stated by common they gave them away to others across the pond. However, what did happen was that public unions gained a lot of strength as governments grew. It is this bunch that has sabotaged local, state and the federal governments.

Unions were started to improve pay, benefits, but most of all working conditions. With public unions it became all about pay and benefits, that did not translate to other workers across the country. So when private unions wanted working conditions to be improved that translated across the private sector and thus was good for the whole. Public unions are selfish and used their considerable power to only help themselves at the expense of their neighbor that had to pay high taxes to support their salary and benefit packages. SELFISH.

tactical unless u are one of the 15% of the whako's that mr. obama has pleased. the rest of us who voted for him are disilusioned. even his chief strategist. david axelrod has indicated that he cannot be reelected. on his performance so far. 3 1/2 years into this administration. the political jab's about the transporting of dog's. the pathetic attempt to push the buffet rule. that at best will decrease a 1+ trillion dollar deficit by 2-3 billion. his want to pandor to alternative fuels, and home improvement credits. will cost the tax payer more than the buffet rule would ever bring. no big ideas,no stimulus, no tax reform. in the senate, where his party is the majority. no vote on a budget. in fact it sit's on mr. harry reids desk. temporary low paying job's with the green initiative. persistent high unemployment. only masked by the fact that many have gone off the extended unemployment benefits. he lacks humility,in the osama bin laden deal. made auto workers look like he was the reason the car company's have had a good rebound. the truth there is they had made many concessions. before, and had to do so again in the buyout. they were the saviours not him,and mr. joe biden. he is in trouble. the right certainly has at the least a 15% bunch of whako's. that should be paid no heed either. the 70% left that are rational. believe the economy is the only issue. he is in trouble!!!!! i voted for him as a senator from ill. i voted for him in 2008. as it stands now. not again. i did this in 1980 also. this chen thing smells fishy. that won't endear him to the rational voter. the splinter groups don't elect the 70% do.

Sending him out of the US Emb/Peking is tantamount to sententing Chen Guancheng to prison for life- first to a hospital where he wi;ll be subjected to 'doctors' care to weed out any desires for freedom of expression- normal life- Obama/Clinton now have a track record of Human Rights for some and No Human Rights for those who truly deserve them. If Obama/Clinton did not want to give Chen a ray of hope in his escaping house arrest- the least they could have done is to direct him to an Embassy/Safe Haven- but no. They also condemned Chen's family and those helping him to a guaranteed life sentence. How cowardly- Chen did not ask for asylum.

I think he knew that asking for asylum in the U.S. Embassy was futile but did it anywaysto gain media attention and bring to light the human rights violations that are taking place in China. I don't think it was ever his intention to ask for political asylum. If you are truly an activist, you never escape the regime that oppresses you, you fight it in the land that the oppression is taking place.

The world is "watching China" from the a safe and deniable distance. No one is actually "watching" China without a wink and nod. They talk the talk, but none walks the walk. What are they going to do? Stop importing all Chinese goods. I can hear the bitching now,no more Ipad, Ipod, cheap clothes, the list goes on.

Everyone talks about doing something about China's treatment of people. I see China as the Leftist model of the U.S., Indoctrination schools, forced abortions, assigned jobs and faith in only the "great leader". Ever wonder why dictators are referred to as leftist? It's telling when Hugo Chavez jokes about being seen as further right than Obama.

You are absolutely correct. Fold and placate, that is the motto of this administration while allowing the immigration of 90,000 muslims each year and soon to be 150,000. Why the disparity in the way people are treated when wanting to come here. The south border lets anyone including terrorists that want to sneak in to have at it, yet a genuine political disedent fleeing oppression is "convinced" to go back?

They are ALL not answering their phones after reporting pending POLICE visits...

Currently - The US ambassador to Beijing, Gary Locke, telephoned the Washington Post newspaper to say he had Mr Chen in his car and was taking him to a medical facility in Beijing.

This was being reported on by; Channel News Asia, BBC, and the Bangkok Post

I think nothing will happen to him because media light is on him. He made it to international news, which was probably his intentions to begin with. On top of that he came to the U.S. embassy an immediate rival of China. He is an activist, his motive is to gain media attention, and that is why he refused to ask for asylum. Now that the cameras are on him, China will do nothing to him that will make him "disappear" in a sense. Can't say the same about other activists.

@MOSinEUR.... that is an absolutely genius insight. By your logic, it's not the person carrying the gun who is responsible for what he does with the gun. It's the responsibility of the person who sold him the gun.

When I sell you a rope, it's none of my business what you want to do with it. Just because one person out of 100,000 wants to use the rope to hang someone is no reason to put the government in charge of selling ropes.

Well Patrick, I think that if you are selling rope to a fanatic that likes to hang people and you happen to be one of the people that he likes to hang...well, STUPID is as STUPID does...and when they string you up, I don't feel sorry for you, only the millions of innocent they also hang.

Or in your case regarding guns...some dipstick is selling guns to an insane criminal organization and that organization goes after you and your family, isn't the dipstick that sold them the guns also guilty? I mean if the gun seller doesn't know any better, that is one thing, but in the case of the NAZIs and Lenin, BOTH told everyone that could read what their plans were and still the Capitalists and yes Jewish bankers as well, financed those that killed millions.

I have no difficulty understanding. You're the one who missed my point. Maybe you're the one with the block.

You want to demonize the profit motive as the cause of all our problems, and the problem is much deeper than that. Putting government in charge of selling the ropes or the guns isn't going to change anything. All it will do is make the government more powerful than the governed. That worked out really well for the people of the Soviet Union and the rest of the former Communist Bloc in Europe. It's working out really well for the people of Cuba and China.

How is that, easier to understand?

Patrick Hanna, I did not demonize the motivation for profit, what I demonize is those that WITH NO MORALS (under the guise of capitalism's desire to make the most profit possible) sell anything and everything to anyone that has money.

The US sold tech to the Chinese that gave them the ability to put an ICBM into your bath tub as well as 9 other cities. Once they had put MIRVs on mobile rocket launchers (so that we could not hit them), they then showed their skill by shooting down a satelite in orbit. Again, where did they get this tech?

Please do try to understand that there should be Government control that is in favor of NATIONAL security that stops the sales of expensive high tech (but we don't because we want to make a buck) and stop the import of foreign products that are made by slave like labor (wont stop that either because...guess again, we have people that want to make a buck).

Do you get the Lenin quote now?

President Obama has not thrown anybody under the bus or to the lions. Chen is considered in China to be "on the run"- he is a Chinese fugitive. American officials have lied to China to say he wasn't there , while they were trying to get freedom for Chen. They were trying to get him to America- without China knowing. But somebody told on America.

Chen’s most passionate supporters were the Chinese netizen community. One netizen, He “Pearl” Peirong, provided logistic support for Chen’s escape, picking him up in Shandong province — where Chen and I both hail from — and taking him to Beijing.

I am awed by the courage of those who helped Chen escape. Pearl told me she is willing to die with Chen because he is such a “pure-hearted courageous person.” I was talking to her last week when she said “guo bao lai le,” that state security had arrived. Now, she is under arrest at an undisclosed location, and her blog has been erased.

Chen is often described as a “dissident,” but that is a misnomer. Despite years of brutal treatment for seeking to bring attention to those victimized by China’s “one-child” policy, he has never established a political party or organization. He has never advocated overthrowing the Communist Party. In the video he posted online after his escape, he says that the injustices his family experienced “hurt the image of our Party.” And the first thing he told me after escaping was that he wanted the outside the world to know that he was not going to leave China but to “fight to the end for the freedom of my family. . . . I want to live a normal life as a Chinese citizen with my family.”

Chen’s escape prompted a predictable brutal response. After police in Shandong realized — four days after Chen got away — that he was gone, they took Chen’s older brother and his nephew, Chen Guangfu and Chen Kegui, into custody. Media reports indicate that Chen’s mother, wife and 6-year-old daughter are tightly guarded by Chinese security forces...

I think there is a much bigger issue here then money and political gain. What is truly being avoided is a War between America and China. Its about human rights. Chen Guangcheng uncovered China's secret. This violation of China Law is punishable by death. "Chen, a 40-year-old lawyer who exposed forced abortions and sterilizations as part of China's one-child policy, was delivered into the protection of U.S. diplomats in Beijing late last week, according to fellow activists." This is an embarrassment to China. American officals want to protect Chen, avoid war, and not further complicate our economy. I do not think this will end well.

I wish Mr. Chen and his supporters luck. I do not know what he intended by escaping without his family other then to bring media attention to his story and the issues that the citizens of China are facing.

Controlling the population is not easy and anytime a country attempts to, women suffer. Being beaten/tortured for your beliefs and speaking your mind is not right. I am thankful that I can speak my mind most of the time without being arrested, or hassled by my government.

I asked myself what kind of man would leave his family in danger while he escapes to safety. He answered that question for me as I am sure he was not forced to go back, or forced to leave the embassy.

Tired, I believe you are correct. This man really is a hero and with the world watching, he MAY really get something that NEVER happens in China and that is fair treatment.

You can speak your mind without being arrested by the government, because what you say is either ignored or not heard by enough people to matter or threaten the "business as usual" status quo.

If your speech ever became a threat to the system, you would be labeled a "terrorist" and under National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 be arrested and taken away to a military prison. Expect no trial and expect having no rights.

They told our tragic hero if he did not leave the embassy they would beat his wife to death. This information was told to him by U.S. personnel, as he states to news media. Alas it is not so; say representatives of U.S. embassy. He sees not his tormentor nor do they reveal themselves, for fear of the Red Dragon. Below someone states we allowed this to happen because we must. The sacrifice of the one outweighs the needs of the many, he resigns to his fate. Will America bow their head also and not interfere in China's affairs?

We should apologize, it is not right the way china treats people like this man. It goes against our views but what it boils down to is this, the United States of America is in debt up to its eye balls with China. China basically owns us, and we cannot blame them, we are the ones that let this happen. We let the wonderous republicans set the stage and put all of the processes in motion that lead to our financial collapse. it was the republicans that started a couple wars we couldnt afford, it was the republicans that made sure their rich friends wouldnt have to pay taxes, and it was the republicans that let all of the scams go on that destroyed our economy. Not we borrow from China to the tune of a trillion dollars. Hey we are the borrowers, we have an obligation to pay it back, its only fair. Its our policies and our ideas and our wealthy retard overlords that set up our economic policy, its their fault we are in @!$%# up to our eye brows but hey we owe china a lot of money we cant be poking the bear when they out number us 5 to 1 im sorry but patriotism doesnt mean we could win if they invaded and they have every right. We need to be carefull we are in debt with them we have to placate them, we dont have the right, or the ability to stand our ground we are their bitches and that is our leaders fault. That is big industries fault. They made sure laws were in place to make them money while the rest of us starve and they made sure we import tons of garbage from china. In return they get tax breaks and they lay off thousands of jobs. But dont get mad they mad new jobs for us... Jobs making minimum wage so you know its fair, we made 20 an hour now we make 7 and we are expected to buy the cheap garbage that they import. dont blame them though, they are job creators... the sarcasm is implied. according to them we need to keep giving them tax breaks even though the trickle down effect doesnt work any more, the money doesnt tickle down in the community it doesnt end up helping the economy its fact. Because for every tax break there is a CEO bonus worth millions, and thousands of jobs laid off and sent over seas. Democracy doesnt exist in this country any more, the minority have controll of the government and the laws and no matter who you vote for they are both in the pocket of big buisnesses every where. Its fact and its true and there is nothign you can do about it. Look for yourself. What big buisness is your favorite candidate pandering for? Our great country has been basically destroyed by greed and corruption, and any one who speaks out against it is labled a socialist too bad we are right. Democracy is a failed dream, I wish so much for it to be true but the majority has no vote, the majority has no rights, and we have no respect amongst our government officials. Good luck every one

Clinton gave everyone a house who couldn't afford it. Investment companies bundled all those bad loans together and called them 'Mortgage Backed Securities'. People who couldn't afford their houses and the 'securities' went bad. THE DEMOCRATS started the snowball rolling down the hill by allowing anyone who couldn't afford a house, to get one. The Democrat Party has been ambushed by Socialistic Progressives who even call themselves 'Progressive Democrats'. It may be too late already I am afraid. Now China tells us what to do. This guy and his family are history and you know it. The Democrats sold their lives for money. Freedom has finally failed.

A nation that has murdered some 3.9m people in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and let's not forget the 1.4m people slaughtered in Iraq and thousands more in AF/PAK, Somalia, Yemen, Lebanon and places 'known only to God.' Then, it finances the murder, maiming, torture and demolition of thousands of Palestinians homes through its 'highly' murderous Jewish hemmorhoid ally and here you are 'preaching to the choir' about nasty China?!! You need to 'peck out' an apology and ask the world's forgiveness for the murder and mayhem the United Snakes (US/Israel/NATO) have committed in Libya last year - and continues arming 'rebel's and promoting murder and mayhem in Syria this year. Yup, like my grandmother used to say: "The skunk doesn't smell under its own tail.' :)

in 1990. mr. h.w. bush announced a new world order. mr. geithner,mr. bernahke, and mr. larry summers. were instructed by the rockerfeller set. to give our currency, technology, and possibly our gold to china. the members of the rockerfeller set. are park ave.,and hampton limosine liberals. mr. geithner, and mr. bernahke. work now for mr. obama's administration. this is the only thing that the 2 parties can agree on. eliminating the working class in america was tantamount. to establish the one world ideaology. proliferated by the wealthy. in which,mr. bill gates would be a pimple on their backside. control like china has is the secret to this one world. if peole are able to control their own destinies. even the wealthy can't stop them. fair wages. longevity on the factory floor, and a genorous company paid pension, and health care. kept these treasoness scum from controlling the world. how ironic that the common man was these ilk's biggest enemy. the right, and the left are complicite in this treason. if we let them sell us off further to china. a revolt against these people will be impossible. these treasoness scum deserve the same treatment the rosenberg's got in the 50's. this mr. chen was going to make a lot of people uncomfortable. whether or not he applied for asylum or not. from the very rich. to the fringe group whako's that mr. obama enables. mr. chen's message of forced abortion, and steralization. would not have played well in the lefty circles. it may have put a spotlight on what is to come in america eventually. as our standard of living is commensurate with the current chinese common man. good luck mr. chen. not all american's are spineless. just those in high places.

Honestly, it has taken a joint effort by Democrats and Republicans to destroy this country. Consider that World War II was like a windfall inheritance by the US: we had 50% of world production because rest of world was destroyed or undeveloped. We acted since 1945 like this would never change; building vast highways that are now clogged up with traffic (when the bridges are not falling apart).

Guess what-it has changed and now we are starting to pay the price for living large in the past. And the chickens are only now STARTING to come home to roost. The worst is yet to come and it doesn't matter much WHO gets elected President. Even a great president could only delay, not stop, the decline.

All the Chinese have to do is just say he was falsely held under house arrest by rogue agents, but they have it handled now and there was no need for the US to interfere.

The idea is that we do RESTRICTED business in the effort to open the Chinese up to other ideas.

Given the amount of Chinese I see at every tourist place in Europe, I would have to assume that the Chinese are more free than under Mao, so perhaps the infection of "Free Will and Democracy" will get the Chinese to move from a repressive government and military to one that really cares about the individual.

It really is better to have contact with China vs. the specter of a dead Earth due to nuclear war. I just would not sell them tech that they can use to put 20 mega ton missiles onto anyone. I mean, what else would the Chinese use our supper computers for? Better calculators?

Actually we do need them. Most Americans can barely afford to buy the 'cheap crap', much less more expensive American made products. The ones who can afford to do so usually opt not to in order to save money. It's our own fault, labor unions and general attitudes toward work among US citizens (not necessarily bad, but do effect prices) have caused the prices of making anything ourselves to skyrocket. Stupid politicians and naive consumers allowed America to become dependant on cheap stuff instead of working to fix our own market's flaws. Everything is so globally tangled trade-wise it would be next to impossible to cut China off at this point seeing as how it's one of if not THE largest market in the world.

Welcome to the real world...made in China :(

if u read up the way. mr. t.b. austin has all the answers. china does not own us. it is our paranoia. they are a country that provides us with cheaper goods. yet our goods are not affordable to their market. they have devalued their currency. so that our ship's leave our ports empty. come back full. i assume that mr. austin just calls this good buisness practices. it is funny, peculiar. in 1972 when cho-en-lai. (american educated) contacted the west. in a desperate plea. for help. mao was a nut, his people were starving etc.... that 40 years later they are an economic super power. t. b. one question do u work for jeff immelt?

I would like for all the Communist Chinese to identify where they come from when they post on the vine. That would give the Westerners an idea if the Chinese intel people even know IF they live in a totalitarian state.

I would love to know if the Mainland Chinese still think they are Communist or now think that they are NAZIs.

Oh, screw China! Everyone gets crazy - we owe them so much money! We must bow to them. You want your money? Come take it!! I'll wait for that... I didn't borrow a dime from you! And Chen will decide HIS own fate. Sucks that he looked for help, and we whimpered like children.

Maria, if you bought anything from Walmart, you bought cheap and it was at a cost of American Jobs when you sent American dollars to China. Even the computer you are presently using was either made or has parts made in China.

Everyone wants to blame China, but they continue to by crap from China and then when Occupy people try to block the harbors from delivering the crap to the stores, the "good old Americans" want the police to crack heads. From Rich to Poor, we need to change what we buy and IF POSSIBLE, buy American or European.

Chen was a distraction that Hillary couldn't abide by. Chen was handed back to his torturers so ole fatazz could waddle into town unhindered. This guy's toast.
