Woman, child survive mauling by cheetahs at wildlife park

Violet D'Mello is attacked by cheetahs on April 28 at Kragga Kamma Game Park near Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

A tourist who, along with a child, was mauled by two cheetahs at the petting area of a wildlife park in South Africa lived to talk about it, saying she decided to play dead in hopes she'd survive.

"Something inside me just said, 'Don't move. Don't move at all," Violet D'Mello told the Port Elizabeth Herald. "Don't react, just play dead'."

D'Mello, from Scotland, said her husband was taking pictures of her with the cheetahs at the Kragga Kamma Game Park when one grabbed the leg of a nearby child.

The girl got free, though with deep scratches that required stitches, and as her brother ran away D'Mello reached out to grab him.

"As I stopped him, something jumped me from behind," she said.

A guide pulled the cheetah off her, but not before it had pawed at her head. Then the second bit D'Mello's legs, keeping her pinned down.

"It all happened in just a few minutes," she said of the incident on April 28, "but it was a nightmare."

Blood oozes from the neck of Violet D'Mello after the attack.

"They weren't being vicious. You could tell they (the cheetahs) were just excited, but it became serious very quickly."

The cheetahs are brothers that have been hand-reared since birth.

The bitten child, Camryn Malan, had wanted to see the cheetahs after doing a school report on the animals.

"They are not sleeping," Samuel Malan said of his children. "They wake up screaming. I keep seeing it ... Just to see that thing biting that lady."

What else does this "petting zoo" have for children to play with? Tigers, wild boars, dragons?

maybe the animals were having a bad day and the animals were being provoked-

people have to be careful not to provoke them

i cannot believe husband was taking pics while this was going on-seemed like he only cared about the pics

I have been to Africa many times and have seen all of these animal in the wild. They are majestic and you get the sense that if everything was equal, no guns, no trucks etc., we would have a huge problem surviving. Key to that survival would be to STAY AWAY FROM THESE PREDATORS. Don't want them in captivity, don't want to make them into wall hangings, simply look at them from a distance and have respect.

If that were my husband taking pictures while I was being mauled 3 feet away, our marriage would be OVER! He is obviously an a)wimp who could only watch in horror while his wife is being mauled b) a sadist who could only watch in glee as his wife is being mauled c) a professional photographer eager for the great shot while his wife is being mauled or d) a damn idiot. Any of these scenarios would be enough for me to leave him or at least take a bodyguard with me everywhere we went since my welfare is not important to him.

You see people getting hurt all the time on the news, etc., however, there are always people standing there film rolling instead of helping. Dumb*****! Also what do people NOT understand about the word WILD?! Were we all not taught this word as children no matter what language our families spoke?!

Even your nicest family pet can turn on you in a heartbeat they are dogs. I am a groomer & have heard & seen it time after time!

FUD, why did this moron woman grab the child? It wasn't HER child. The boy was running AWAY from the cheetah, so why would this woman want to interfere with this process? What am I missing here? If you see a child running FROM danger, dammit, don't interfere by grabbing him! This story must be missing something.

No......it's not missing anything. That's just the way these writers on this msnbc page write.....incomplete with tons of gray area. I see this time and time again when I read their articles. I agree though, really sloppy.

Actually cheetahs aren't known for aggressive behavior. In fact ancient Egyptians used them to hunt and kept them for pets. They are also known for their more dog like traits than other big cats But still, I'm in agreement that large predators aren't the best candidates for a petting zoo. All cats get excited by motion and small prey like critters, um like fast moving little children. But the lady did the right thing by playing dead. No motion, no action and the prey drive shuts down. When I play with my cat and he gets a little rough, I just let my hand go limp and he shuts down. What next? Petting zoos with Great Whites? Lord! (Big time eye rolls)

I'm glad the woman's husband was able to avoid helping her in his attempt to get a Pulitzer for photography! Also Cheetah do not have "arms" they have legs.

It would seem to me that divorce court might be the next step for this woman, since her husband seemed to just stand there taking pictures while she was getting mauled. Nice job with the camera, though!

you cant make this stuff up - top of the food chain predators at a petting zoo ??????? Did they put the cheetas down?

          Reply#43 - Sat May 5, 2012 7:26 PM EDT

Cheetahs are by nature very timid. The Masai tribe in Africa routinely scares cheetas away when the animals get too close to their livestock. They go out there in the field with their spears and holler at the animals, making aggressive movements, and the cats run away. Ever watch "Big Cat Diary"? Cheetahs are the wimps in the wild, easily scared off by hyenas. Like the host once said, cheetas are not fighters, they're runners. Of course, I see nothing intimidating about that D'mello woman. If I was a cheetah, I wouldn't be the least afraid of her, but if I saw a Masai farmer coming towards me, I'd scram like the wind.

my wife and child= 2 dead cheetahs end of story

First of all any husband that lets their wife and child go play with predators is dumb as a post. The situation is more like...... One exceptionally dumb and reckless husband = one mauled wife and child.

They went into the cheetah's environment of which they are a complete captive by humans. Go out in the wild then play with a bunch of wild animals............ then go kill them all because they act like they are supposed to. Yep, that is logical.

Then we all wonder why most, if not all, predators are either extinct or soon to be extinct.

What are Cheetahs doing in a petting area? Especially full grown ones!

Cheetas are the most beautiful of the cats family. I do hope that they are not killed because of the stupidity of humans again. To the person who tought that one of the commentor about the arm (leg) of one of the cheeta was missing. You gave that commentor a GOLD STAR? saying that he was a GOOD OBSERVER? think again, if you think he should get a GOLD STAR, than YOU DESERVE A DONKEY CAP.

Pound, for pound, when instinct is triggered, cats are the most dangerous animals that I can think of. If you don't believe me, just look at my drapes! And, try to make a cat stay off of the counter tops......We must be sort of intrigued by their "screw you" attitudes.

There is money to be made from this...Any cell phone makers out there should jump on this...I can see the AD now.

"No matter how your day goes...always remember to hold onto your phone in case of those dire situations where you might actually need one..."

This lady should get a prize for clinging to her precious cell phone while being mauled...Did she really think she needed it at that point...? It even looks like she was trying to charge it up during the melee. I can almost hear her saying..."damn you cheetahs, give me a break, I am on the phone here."
