Environmental scientists are trying to find out why hundreds and dead pelicans and dolphins are washing ashore in northern Peru. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.
LIMA, Peru - Peru's government declared a health alert along its northern coastline on Saturday and urged residents and tourists alike to stay away from long stretches of beach, as it investigates the unexplained deaths of hundreds of dolphins and pelicans.
At least 1,200 birds, mostly pelicans, washed up dead along a stretch of Peru's northern Pacific coastline in recent weeks, health officials said, after an estimated 800 dolphins died in the same area in recent months.
The Health Ministry recommended staying away from beaches, though stopped short of a ban, and called on health officials to use gloves, masks and other protective gear when collecting dead birds.
The peak tourism season around Lima's beaches is over, though many surfers are still venturing into the waters near the capital.
The Agriculture Ministry said preliminary tests on some dead pelicans pointed to malnourishment. Oscar Dominguez, head of the ministry's health department, said experts had ruled out bird flu.

"The Health Ministry ... calls on the population to abstain from going to the beaches until the health alert is lifted," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website, along with a photograph of a dead pelican.

Dead pelicans are displayed by conservationists at Reventazon beach, close to the Illescas peninsula in Piura, Peru on April 27.
The ministry said officials had so far checked 18 beaches in and around Lima for dead birds, but gave no details on any findings.
A mass pelican death along Peru's northern coast in 1997 was blamed at the time on a shortage of feeder anchovies due to the El Nino phenomenon.

"The Health Ministry recommended staying away from beaches, though stopped short of a ban, and called on health officials to use gloves, masks and other protective gear when collecting dead birds" Wait what the @!$%#, Pedro! put your god damn gloves on.
When oceans go.......so does man. A sign of things to come?
Only to the paranoid.
The world is ending this year duh, these are the signs. Sheeple.
sad.
i was thinking same thing peanut...that dude is an idiot not wear gloves. birds carry all kinds of diseases besides what may have killed them.
As long as corporations and governments use the ocean and our waterways as their own personal waste disposal dump, these things will continue to happen.
As long as the Southern Oscillation known as El Niño continues to occur, these things will continue to happen.
we are like ticks on this planet
Could be methane meaning not man made", take a chill pill till we get the news anyway my original thought was Chavez is up to something.
More than likely they died from eating some diseased fish. We are DESTROYING OUR OCEANS FOLKS. It has taken some time, but slowly we are doing it. Entire coral reefs are being destroyed, then entire ecosystems of fish disappear. Or some industry dumps a bunch of chemicals in the water and it makes its way to our ocean and up the food chain to the pelicans. Either way the pelicans and other fish eating animals die in great numbers. To blame it on El Nino is ridiculous. We have had El Nino before and haven't seen mass dolphin and pelican deaths to this degree. This is something more.
My thoughts are more in the line of alan's; while diruptions occur, it's very hard for me to believe that both pelicans and dolphins, animals that have evolved over time with El Nino and Nina are prone to mass die offs on this scale simply because the normal food supply has been altered to location. I would think they, too, would follow the changing currents and would have other restaraunt items available to survive on. If starvation is found to be at least partially responsible, I would have to think that what was available to eat had been contaminated in some way and was so 'nasty' as to be considered inedible by both dolphin and pelicans.
All life forms are geared towards survival; pseudo science may come up with variable weather patterns and oceanic current shifts to explain these things, but may also be the same in the pocket of corporations or governments responsible as other scientists would say differently. Again, no marine biologist here, but I'd have to think that evolving with the same Nina and Nino effects along with the strong urge for survival there likely is something else afoot....the authorities in Peru likely think the same, as they're covering their tushes with 'urging' people to stay away from beaches. It seems they find simple starvation circumspect, too.
The Peruvian government has put together a panel from different ministries to analyze a report by the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE). Officials have been able to conclude that the dolphins' deaths were not due to lack of food, interaction with fisheries, poisoning with pesticides, biotoxin poisoning or contamination by heavy metals.
Peruvian Deputy Environment Minister Gabriel Quijandria said the dolphins may have died from an outbreak of Morbillivirus or Brucella bacteria.
**************
p.s. - Scientists believe that dolphins are able sleep with half a brain. One half of the brain is awake while the other half sleeps, then the sides switch. Dolphins function normally during this time, and the half-brained sleeping prevents drowning.
.
800 Dead Dolphins . What are they hiding ?
Our oceans are in serious distress. Peru just is in the spot light because of the HUGE numbers of animal die offs. It is everywhere, if you are not afraid to look around at the environment.
In the Gulf of Mexico, baby dolphins are dying at record numbers. The shrimp industry has been closed in Louisiana because of malformed shrimp and fish sores.
In Washington State, whales are being found dead, and on examination and necropsies, they are finding their stomachs full of empty plastic milk jugs. In essence, they are starving to death.
In the Hawaiian Atoll, protected seals are dying and the studies are pointing to the loss of fish in the oceans, and the seals are having to go miles and miles for food. Study by (Sea-cam strapped to the seals). Miles and miles of video show no fish in the ocean and the sharks are getting those that aren't starving.
Wake up people, the oceans are being OVER FISHED, POLLUTED and DESTROYED by one simple element: Called MAN.
They said that it was likely due to a virus, not anything that mankind has done.
And, you believe that? Everything ALWAYS points back to mankind. There was a Sea Lion die off, off of the California coast a few years ago and it was blamed on "a toxic sea bloom" however it was NOT the toxic sea bloom itself that caused the death it was the run off from all the FERTILIZERS people put on lawns to keep them green that EXAGGERATED that sea bloom into a massive level. Mankind leaves its toxic imprint on everything.
Interesting conclusion, Freedman1. If investigation uncovers that bacteria and/or virus is connected to the death of so many of a species in real time, it may be a window into past die-offs, even extinctions. The evidence of an offensive microbe might not be present in the fossil record if decomposed along with the soft tissue of the infected organism ... but, I'm just pondering the mystery out loud.
The Health Ministry recommended staying away from beaches, though stopped short of a ban, and called on health officials to use gloves, masks and other protective gear when collecting dead birds. Wait, Wtf Pedro! put you damn gloves on. How many times do I have to tell you to put your shoes and gloves on if your gonna be touching 100's of dead pelicans that died for reasons unknown.
I thought the same thing when I read article and then looked at picture. The Health Ministry tells people handling this dead pelicans to wear gloves, masks, and what do they show- a man holding one of the dead with his bare hands while he is standing amongst other dead pelicans in his bare feet and another man standing there no gloves, masks, shoes and not even a shirt. What are they thinking and who they gonna blame if it is found they died for something contagious and they get sick because they touched the dead birds with no body protection. I hate to be cruel but DUH!!!!
In so many ways, mankind and his ecological ignorance is killing the Earth, and all the reasons the Earth supports and creates all life. Pelicans, like dolphins, are biological diversity, the bricks and mortar of man's house, the Earth.
Man cannot make it, alone. He needs ecosystems that fuel his very existence, and ecosystems require both plant and animal biodiversity, the creators and life supporters of Earth's ecosystems, every and all reasons man breathes. All things are interconnected, and all things interconnect to Earth's ecosystems!
Skor154=Tree Hugger.
Very proud of my ecological education. You are a tree hugger too, if you like oxygen, fresh water, safety from the planet's heat trapping, climate warming gases as ecosystems also sequester these gases while releasing oxygen, evapotranspiration and the sequestration of those climate warming, heat trapping gases.
In other words, life itself. Next, try on the Earth's very life zone of all life or Earth's biosphere/ecosphere. Awesome!
Steve= idiot
Dolphins and pelicans both eat fish. Maybe there's a problem with the fish population? They did say some seemed to have died from starvation.
Me too. I'm a Tree Hugger and proud of it.
Steve is just another ineffective, impotent troll, lashing out at his betters. You should see how he treats his mother.
Yamuttya,
My thoughts EXACTLY.
Those pigs that ignore the facts that our oceans are in trouble are whistling past the grave yard. Whole reef systems are being destroyed. Sharks, that have a "cleaning effect" when they eat weak and diseased fish, are being killed off by the thousands for their fins so the Asian cultures can have their stupid shark fin soup. Shark populations are down 80% in some regions.
Oh, by the way, if you ever ate shark fin soup, you ate something that is practically tasteless, high in mercury, and with no real nutritional value. Congratulations.
I've only been lucky enough to visit the ocean a few times, the Atlantic, and would wonder just how amazing it was that the only land across was Europe. It's immensity, enormity... somewhat awe struck. It's one thing to read about deadzones in the Gulf, see graphical pictures, or hear about over fishing and dying coral reefs and all else.... but to really try to comprehend just how impactive that is, how large of areas impacted, how it almost would seem impossible without trying soooo hard given the vastness of the oceans is another thing altogether. It's almost impossible to do. Yet, corporations and governments are doing it.
I could see where, perhaps 100 years ago or so, that people thought the oceans so vast, so much unkown that all in it were not only in endless supply but that there's no way they could ever be polluted to the point of affect (populace much smaller, too, but seperate here). Now, we have the evidence before us; no more 100 year old thought processes. It's not A or B as fishing and manufacturing are both necessary but need to be done so.... wait for it.... responsibly. It's as easy as that. Common sense, real science. Similarly to space efforts with NASA and space exploration nations need to come together for another common good regardless of politics.
We're seeing some rather tumultuos times per economies, politics, and over population of human animals. Not sure how all will come out, but across the board change is direly needed.
acknowledging that you shouldn't crap where you eat makes you a hippy huh. must be one of those god said i can do whatever i want with the planet folks- cause its not like god lets us suffer the consequences of our sins and actions..amirite
Pelicans are just sooooo hard to love.
Sick puppies, however, get me every time.
Man made pollutants?
starved cuz their bellies are full of plastic bottle caps?
1997 incident was blamed on shortage of food
maybe something nasty is going on with one of there nasty neighbors like venezuela messin around
Check a map. Venezuela and Peru are not neighbors on any ocean. Venezuela has coast in the Caribbean, Peru in the Pacific. But feel free to hate Venezuela for no discernible reason. Your knowledge of geography is possibly indicative of your abilities at reasoning.
You know.. Every shred of logic aside. I blame China. Lets invade. *starts whistling R.E.M's Its the end of the world as we know it... ".
Could we save the dolphins by eliminating the marks? Probably not. But we might save the earth by educating them.
Are you people in denial B.P. Corporation had another oil spill and they are continueing to stay in business, whats really going on and why are these animals continuing to die. Here's why, cause people cintinue to get there gasoline and oil products from the company. They are killingprecious animals and getting away with it. What is the government doing about it? Well, lets see, lets make B.P. pay so many millions to, well keep B.P. in business. Now is that coruption or not? Shut the company down, forever, and make the government pay to keep them shut down, cause the government is in compete control. Lets be real here endangered animals are dying because the government doesn't care. Yes, the world is coming to an end.
El Niño's warm rush of nutrient-poor tropical water, heated by its eastward passage in the Equatorial Current, replaces the cold, nutrient-rich surface water of the Humboldt Current. When El Niño conditions last for many months, extensive ocean warming and the reduction in Easterly Trade winds limits upwelling of cold nutrient-rich deep water and its economic impact to local fishing for an international market can be serious.
Ok - that and shut BP down.
Thanks Tracie Powers I tend to agree with you. And Will in post #8 that's another possibility. Bottom line is that this is some man made disaster for sure. And surfers are still in the water....go figure.

i though"pelican products" came with a lifetime warranty on them :P ,looks like lights out" for them now
has anyone thought...Japan////nuke plant release into ocean killing off all the feeder fish????
The Current goes the other way, it's a different hemisphere. I was wondering how long it would take for somebody to bring up "japan///nuke plant release". Feeder fish disappear every time there's a La Nina.It effects birds that eat them and large fish, it would be nice if everyone would do a little reading before pointing fingers.
Just wondering with all those coke subs traveling the area, what happens when one takes on water and sinks, what does that do to the marine life that ingests the drug ladened water? Especially the feeder fish.
Will, nobody thought about it except you. Perhaps you might try thinking about something more plausible, like the Flying Spaghetti Monster...
oh marks the pelican products still do,,, just not the pelicans.
Dont blame the anchovies when 800 dolphins die with the pelicans - dolphins can cross oceans for food! Just smoke screen...
Little known fact: so can pelicans.
The end times are here! The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse have shown their hand. Pestilence, death, and famine throughout the world. Are you ready?
Pestilence, Death, Famine. I think I'm missing one. Do any of you know who the other one is? I forgot.
try war
Oh Yeah! WAR! Man's perpetual state. And seeing as we've had pestilence, death and famine for thousands of years, it's nothing new and should be of no surprise to anyone.
Roger? Out!
Oh, I thought they were Linbaugh, Hannity, Beck and Gringrich.
Well, I guess War Ranger has satisfied my maximum daily requirement of bogus malarkey and poorly controlled trolling.
Actually, that was a near-flawless troll. He said something controversial, then setup the bait question and finished with the ironic twist and departed.
Not that he's not a numbskull, mind you.
Bolivian Navy Seals are behind it. Check out the SOSUS results.
Tee Hee!
@ Mario69,
Bolivian and Navy Seals in the same sentence makes as much sense as Military and Intelligence being lumped together.
@ mommaraisedafool,
Sorry you didn't like it. I thought it was rather cleaver and witty. A play on my call sign. I guess some people have no sense of humor. With all the crap that goes on in this world, I try to find humor wherever I can. Don't be such a grouch. Lighten up, it may help you live longer. Is there anything you personally can do to stop the birds or dolphins from dying? If so, WHY ARE YOU WASTING TIME POSTING HERE?!? Go help the critters. If not, chill, have a conversation with anonymous people while you drink a Jack and Coke. OK?
DAMN! I misspelled clever! I geuss I'm not so clever after all. Or I should just use spell check, huh?
Did the Beaver do it?
800 dolphins? 1,200 birds?, good grief...hope they find an answer because that is SCARY
Alfred Hitchcock was a prophet to be reconed with.
Okay, everyone stop blaming this on humans. Feeder fish shortages happen nearly every El Nino.
Yeah, the only thing is that people don't read and automatically jump to conclusions.
keep a blind eye we have done so much damage to this earth it is sickening and we can blame El Nino but we are the cause of El Nino, with are on a fast path to destruction, soon as it hits the breaking point bye bye, this is only in the last 130 yrs but every day we do more damage no clean water no clean air but as long as the 1 % is getting richer it all seems to be ok how stupid we are. Does no one get the way this system is geared we feed the 1%
We are at the end of La Niña. Not sure what the freedman1 is saying but I guess as long as it makes him sound intelligent.
If La Nina caused die-offs of this magnitude every few years, don't you think the people in Peru, with its long coastline, would know about this? Do you think they are stupid? Yes, the article stated that some birds were malnourished, but sick birds don't fish and eat. If you watch pelicans fish, you will notice that they have to be very strong to dive and recover with their catch. These are beautiful birds, so sad that they are dying this way.
- connections between Navy active-sonar and reports of whales and dolphins dying, but also can lead to the death of a wide range of sea life.
Very sad.
My heart breaks for the pain and suffering of these beautiful creatures.
Does your heart break for the pain and suffering of the homeless people living in your town?
Not if he belongs to PETA.
Mmmmmmm...PETA
People Eating Tasty Animals
Shandril, why would you assume that if someone expresses sympathy for suffering animals, that it automatically means they do not sympathize with humans who are suffering? In my experience, people who care about the suffering creatures care the most about human suffering. And those who do not care about animals, usually do not care much about people, except, of course, about themselves. We are all living on this one earth, and it does not look good for the future.
@ shandril,
Only if they are that way by no fault of their own. If you are referring to the ones homeless because they are drug addicts, alcoholics, ex-convicts, etc., then no. we should have no sympathy for them as they put themselves in that situation. No one forced them to take drugs, abuse alcohol, etc. They made their bed, they can lie in it. Animals have no intelligent control over their enviroment outside the need to feed, survive, and procreate.
Yeah - explain it away using the cover of natural phenomenons. BP's oil spill or the huge amounts of dispersant s thrown into the sea right after couldn't possibly have something to do with the deaths of dolphins of pelicans. What do the malnourished dolphins or pelicans do? Food is so scare, poor things are starving to death. That is not science that is political science. The planet is on a downward spiral is for all to see so clearly.
Another geography lesson - Peru in the WEST side of South America. The BP oil spill was in the Gulf of Mexico - no interconnecting waterways.
NEXT!
@Tek-Pro,
HELLO!?! If my geography from grade school is still correct, isn't Peru on the Pacific side of the world's oceans. Also, the Atlantic currents run, ( mainly the Gulf Stream ), East to West and South to North. That I believe would preclude the BP spill residue from traveling against the current, down around the bottom of South America, ( namely Argentina ), and up the Pacific Ocean to Peru.
And who gave Tek-Pro a one up for saying something so asinine as the BP Gulf of Mexico spill affecting the Pacific Ocean? I have no love for the greedy-ass oil companies, but for Pete's sake, get a clue before you post.
If anything it could be nuclear radiation? I guess all of the Japanese reactors that melted down about this time last year are still dumping radiation into the Pacific. Just do a search on it... from what I've read all of the mountains of trash are also making their way to the west coast.
And We Have The USS Enterprise In The Gulf As A False Flag Because Its Cheaper To Sink It Rather Than Pay To Have It Put Out Of Commission. They Do Not Care About The World We Live In. These Bastards Need To Be Stopped.
Christopher - Many reefs are built using objects that were built for other purposes, for example by sinking oil rigs (through the Rigs-to-Reefs program), scuttling ships, or by deploying rubble or construction debris. Other artificial reefs are purpose built (e.g. the reef balls) from PVC or concrete. Shipwrecks may become artificial reefs when preserved on the sea floor. Regardless of construction method, artificial reefs generally provide hard surfaces where algae and invertebrates such as barnacles, corals, and oysters attach; the accumulation of attached marine life in turn provides intricate structure and food for assemblages of fish.
Wouldn't have happend if we still controlled the Panama Canal.
Take it back! Send the Rangers!
@ Mario,
Fug that! I already jumped into Rio Hato back in '89 when we got Noriega. Then helped 1st Batt. with Torr.-Tocumen Airport. We should have just kept in the first place.
Probably some corporation dumping toxins in the ocean again. It might even be from the US. The Repugnicans haven't managed to dissolve the EPA yet, forcing American industries to use foreign waters as dumping grounds.
Must be from Obama's hot air!
June, 22, 2010 - NPR
In the middle of the Peruvian Amazon, thousands of miles from the BP rig pouring oil into the Gulf of Mexico, oil spills have been a fact of life for more than 30 years. ....
"a Peruvian government study published in 2006 found that most indigenous people living along this river — the Rio Corrientes — had unhealthy levels of lead in their blood and 95 percent exceeded the healthy limit for cadmium. Lead and cadmium are associated with oil spills, which have been happening here for decades."
It could possibly be pollutants in the ocean and coastal waters from oil drilling and exploration. There has been outrageously bad consequences in the northern part of that country, especially around the Amazon basin. because of it.
This is a story filed yesterday about a part of the legal problems the people of Peru in the northern region are experiencing as a result of trying to STOP expansion of the oil exploration which has contaminated all of their coastal waters.
Seems like the opening chapters in a Stephen King novel.. Strange.
I have an idea let republican scientist see what the problem is... its not man made
0bama is trying to figure a way to blame Bush for this right now.
The White House has anounced a Press confrence will be held at 1:00 PM est film at 11 PM
Mexico over fishes and illigally fishes waters using methods that rape the water. Their waters are so over fished they sneak across the border to pilfer our fish in these ways, netting anything and everything for miles. With el nino it just pushes the population to the brink and stuff dies off..
The thing that makes me wonder though is how the dolphins would die of starvation, they should be smart enough to migrate away long before that happens. Something smells fishy.
Did you miss the part where they said that the cause is likely a virus?
Sounds similiar to what they call in Florida as the Red Tide. It happened in Florida at times. It was hard to breath on the beach, with lots of fish dead.
Peru has their problems while the US has results of the Gulf oil spill as mutant fish/shrimp are found. Now US Law Makers were paid by Keystone pipeline to drilling in the heartland with no safety or regulations. Obama was the safety plans put in but Keystone says it would cost them to much money. So when Mitt gets in office the US will see the Gulf destroyed and then the heartland.
What jackie? The increase in oil capacity from the Keystone pipeline expansion was to permit increased oil flow from Canada. The southern portion of the Keystone pipeline expansion is already underway - it didn't require federal approval.
Drilling in the midwest has been a way of life since oil was found.
Honestly jackie. Eh...enough said. I think I'll go to the farm and dig for oil when I finish mowing.
I do not think we have had so many Dolphins die at one time like this before. I wonder what is going on. Yes, man is changing the environment. And honestly, Cars are the worst enemy to the Earth. Now that we are sharing the wealth with over 1 billion people and the Car explosion in China and india has grown to astronomical levels, expect to see more of the same!!!
Yes. Cars are the problem. We should sue Disney and Pixar.
Uh, the article said they think the deaths were caused by malnutrition. I fail to see how that has anything to do with oil or cars. If liberals are correct that carbon dioxide is the evil gas, and it warms up the earth, then it would be good for the planet from a food standpoint, don't you think? There was a huge abundants of food during the warmest eras of the planet. Dinosaurs could not have existed if it weren't for the warm climate. The temperatures when the dinosaurs roamed were about 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than it is today and there was no ice at the poles. Selfish liberals complain because the warmer weather puts them through inconvenience such as tornados, hurricanes and flooding.
China has exploding cars? Whatever happened to quality control?
It must be due to the increase in CO2 being released in Japan since they have shutdown all of their nuclear power plants and are now producing 30% of their base power load using fossil fuels!
So is mankind responsible for every virus, disease and natural disaster that has occurred on this planet since the beginning of time? I'm suspecting that some people here think so.
Also, the article states that malnutrition is the cause of the die off, while the video states that a virus is suspect. MSNBC, make up your mind.
It's a guessing game at this point; nobody really knows what caused their deaths. However, I am inclined to believe it is related to the death of their primary source of food. But, on the other hand, why did it affect both pelican and dolphin? Having witnessed, first hand, the man-made filth dumped in the oceans, the contributions of industrialized countries cannot be discounted.
