Police sources in Afghanistan's Badghis province say an overnight NATO air strike killed 14 civilians in the district of Balamurghab, Al Jazeera reported Monday.
Six other civilians were reportedly injured.
Meanwhile, military officials said Monday three NATO troops died in a blast in eastern Afghanistan. The nationality of the service members killed hasn't been made public yet.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Monday that the strategic pact sealed by President Barack Obama last week was at risk of becoming "meaningless" if Afghans don't feel safe. His statement referred to recent civilian casualties by NATO.
Karzai called U.S. Gen. John Allen, commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, and U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker, to the palace on Monday to discuss what he said were dozens of civilian casualties caused by NATO in four provinces since Sunday evening.
"Karzai signed the strategic pact with the United States to avoid such incidents (civilian casualties) and if Afghans do not feel safe, the strategic partnership loses its meaning," a presidential palace statement said.
President Obama goes to Afghanistan to sign post-war agreement
The Strategic Partnership Agreement spells out the U.S. relationship with Afghanistan beyond 2014, covering security, economics and governance. The deal is limited in scope and essentially gives both sides political cover: Afghanistan gets its sovereignty and a promise it won't be abandoned, while the U.S. gets to end its combat mission but keep a foothold in the country.

GOOD lets get the HELL OUT.
Plus Karzai controls little of the country. More of our aid goes to his family than goes to helping ordinary Afgans. Should have NEVER had boots on the ground in the first place. What a waste of fine young men and woman.
But this was Obama's "good" war and Iraq was Bush's "bad" war. Make up your mind. Obama makes a deal with Karzai to 'catch and release" Taliban while his simple servants who oversee all of the nation-building programs allow our dollars to funnel through the corrupt Karzai government right to the...Taliban.
Do you know what Karzai's family did before we sent troops? They RAN the opium trade in Afghanistan. Guess it comes as a great surprise to President Buttwheat that Karzai is a crook.
Obama would have never put boots on the ground in the first place. Didnt need troops to accomplish his goals. See Libya. Obama would have used the AF to punish the Taliban. But that would have been bad for Halliburton. After all they gave Cheney over 25 million dollars on his way to the White House.
I do agree Obama needs to get out now but cant look weak on fighting terrorism. The first time Karzai asks us to leave after a few unauthorized night raids we will. Hopefully.
How many hours did the Obama-Karzai Strategic Partnership Agreement last? Americans have to understand that Karzai and his cohorts are corrupt- how many billions have been wasted in there and nothing to show for it. Obama had Germany's Merkel make an official assistance for Afghanistan for the next 10 yrs. There is absolutely no accounting of monies diappearing to Qatar and UAE by the sachelfuls. It was Sunday when an US Marine was killed by a buddy system Afghan soldier and another American injured. Swedish ISAF was injured badly by a roadbomb. It is unsafe all over the place for foreigners. What criteria are there for the real endgame? If Obama's partner (Hamid Karzai)repudiates the just signed agreement with all the hoopla- Obama releasing terrorists from detention back for the chase (NATO?ISAF forces'killing)isn't that called the writing on the wall phenomena? Where is US Congress?
As soon as we leave, Karzai will either be killed or, most probably, switch sides...Barry thinks he can deal with this snake but he keeps getting outsmarted as he has on most of our foreign policies.
US should void the pact and let Karzay, his cronies et-al corrupt and inept government sink or swim by them self. Pretty soon the world will see who will be bailing out with pocketfull of money. Karzay and his inept government are ungrateful anyway. Let see how long the Afghan government can stay on their own feet. USA and NATO should leave Afghanistan A.S.A.P. The Afghan armed forces and Karzay are the first one to run and scatter in all direction in a close combat that tells how brave the Afghans are. No need to waste lives anymore in Afghanistan let them settle their own score winner takes all.
Agree. But there should be nothing to do more either in terms of aids of any sort.
Look at that animal, Karzai. He is placed and guarded by the US special forces. He has no control beyond his palace.
Still now and then the most ungrateful Karzai shouts in different voices!
I wonder what Karzai would do if we started carpet bombing the boarder between Pakistan and Afghanistan? We could easily tell everyone that we want a 10 KM free fire zone and clear out. Anyone dee dee bopping in the area will be hit. That would make Afghanistan very safe.
Yup, Karzai, when are the next elections? You have to step down or be taken down...no Putin for you. Just say, "Bye-Bye".
It doesn't matter who put the boots on the ground to start with. The clown that sent terrorists to the U.S. is dead. Lets bring the soldiers home and not support that corrupt mess they have there. It seems we have installed yet another dictatorial regime to replace the last dictatorial regime. Get our troops home. We have no business where we aren't wanted since the original mission is OVER.
Funny how these disgusting muslims claim they want peace, yet they look for any reason to go against the grain and create instability and violence. These are the same people that would condone strapping on a suicide vest and killing a kindergarten classroom full of kids.
The simple FACT is that these people are liars, hypocrits, and murderers, their cult book teaches them this. Their "holy" book is basically a set of instructions to persecute anyone who isn't a male muslim. They will stab you in the back as soon as they can, all the while claiming they are your friends.
We need to GET OUT of afghanistan, and the whole mid-east in general. Our troops don't need to die for these people.
'...these people are liars, hypocrits, and murderers. They will stab you in the back as soon as they can, all the while claiming they are your friends.'...
The first thought that came to mind as I read this was the similarity to members in Democratic and Republican Partys. The obvious is so often overlooked...isn't it?
I agree, both parties have no problem pandering to muslims as long as the people at the top make their money. Democrats do it openly, republicans do too, just behind closed doors.
And the similarities between all three are very real. All three sacrifice their people to further gains in power and wealth.
Unfortunately too many people in this country are partisan, and incapable of seeing that no matter which side takes power, they are both just two sides of the same coin.
The problem is politics has been fully corrupted, because people are no longer the voice of the government, money is. And when people at the top care about money more than anything else, its bad news for us.
Not even close...to portray Democrats and Republicans to the Taliban/Karzai/Al Queda is just plain stupid!
Peace?? In muslim place it's jungle rule it does not exist because no one can voice an opinion without being labeled as infidel. Usually an uneducated cleric who only knows the koran from memorizing is in control, not the masses, this uneducated cleric is a frog in a deep well, never seen the meadow, always wants other to follow him regardless if he is wrong , no one can voice an opinion, the cleric can easily incite other brownnoser to kill in the name of their allah. How funny could it be that their alah can speak to him or direct him what to do. Muslim is a religion that will never accept responsibility for their action, lies, hypocrites, backstabber. followers of muslim are mostly exconvicts.
Logic for WHO?? JRTO is exactly right, nail on the head, bingo... YAHTZEE. until people like you wake up this country will continue heading in a place that our kids and grand kids will never be able to fix. the only reason we haven't had a revolution is because the rest of the world is just a little more screwed up than we are at home. problem is, we're not far behind and Americans don't see it. Travel the world a little and see whats happening out there. Our politicians (every one of them on both sides) will sell our country to the highest bidder. they don't care about me, you, or anyone else out there. we're lucky our for fathers set up certain rules and laws to protect us from dictators which is what they have become, just with a little less authority than some of the countries out there like Egypt or Iraq, Afghanistan who think the country is theirs and not the people. When will American learn, i know one thing, it will be to late.. it may already be to late to make a positive change.
You are 200 percent right. Your post hits straight on. This is what most feel.
British invented Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and the US and allies kept them in the map.
Still Pakistan has backstabbed NATO forces most in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, Kuwaiti, UAE and others have backstabbed the US and allies most in ME.
For saving them, Saudi Arabia and co manipulated oil prices sky high and gave in return their Sunni Islamic extremist versions of Salaffi and Wahhabi mosques all over the world. These mosques are the biggest trouble creators in non-Muslim nations.
Now the same Sunni Saudi gang, oil companies and their lobbyists are setting the US and allies for doing their dirty work in Iran and Syria just like Iraq.
Iran's oil supplies are being choked and prices are again manipulated higher and higher.
When it comes to non-Muslims, the US, Israel and West, they all join hands and scream: jihad!
Who the hell cares what Karzai says? Just get our troops the hell outta his miserable country and be done with it. After all our government is saying Al-CROCKA is dead anyway... Too many lives, needlessly lost, bring our young men and women home and leave the body bags in Afghanistan!!! Geesh Enough Already!!!
Karzai is just a piece of dog-sh** on Obama's shoes and the sooner he wipes that POS off and discards him the better for the Western world. Look at any photo of Karzai and all you see are greedy piggy eyes - the eyes of a congenital liar, cheat, and thief. May anybody's Lord bless the Afghan who cuts that lying throat in Kabul's soccer stadium.
Mr. Karzai, most people in America feel that we got ripped off in your under the table deal with President B. Hussein Obama. I hope and pray you decide the agreement is meaningless. As meaningless as the lives of our soldiers are to you. As meaningless to you as the lives of countless victims around the world who are addicted to opium grown in Afghanistan and the many who have died from your opium. I hope the United States pulls out of Afghanistan and you are left to deal with the Taliban on your own. I consider events unfolding in such a manner not only meaningful but poetic justice.
Actually it is the Taliban that pushes the opium, that is why they want control back.
obama appeases this nation and frees taliban and i bet karazi will not honor agreement and it just be another obama blunder on foreign policy
The biggest blunder was putting boots on the ground in the first place. That was krazy.
Yep another Obama let's bend over and take it in the a** blunder...oh don't forget the apology too!
Ok "guy", I let you get away with your first comment about "boots on the ground mistake", but you're starting to sound like a broken record. History Lesson - 1) American was attacked on 9/11 by an organzation that had it's roots and seat of power in Afganistan. 2) Americans are not used to getting thousands of it's citizens butchered without a response. 3) Americans usually kick the crap out of anyone or any country that decides to attack us and kill thousands of out people. 4) You CANNOT get rid of enemies with drones, prayer, or BS negotiaions - you NEED boots on the ground to KILL THEM. Guy - are you still with me or gone back to your latte? 6) Iraq, just happened to have broken every item of the 1991 Truce agreement after the Gulf War, was actively using biologicals and nerve agents against hundreds of thousands of it's own people, who ALSO happened to be people we had promised to protect (not even Syria, Iran, or Libya has used mass-casualty weapons against it's own dissidents to date), and our President at that time had every legal, moral, and obligated right to remove this scum-bag. That it happened around the same time as Afganistan is merely poor timing on Sadamms part. 7) People that constantly bring up this crap about "unjust wars...being lied too....wars for oil...can't wn etc etc." are either too friggin stupid to understand the historical evolution of fundamentalism and middel eastern dictatorships that threaten the USA or so caught up in left-wing BS and media approved crusades that they can't separate sh_t from shinola.
It's high time we leave Afghanistan to solve it's problems. There is no possibilty of winning a war of ideology and the old adage of violence begetting violence is certainly being put on display by this conflict.
The Russians couldn't do it in 10 years and we backed the rebels...cold war crap.
We have spent 10 years there and promising another 10 in taxpayer money?
I'm tired of the bleeding of our troops and now even more out of our pockets.
Yes it is time to throw the dogs back to the dogs!
JackBNimblett - I guess WW2 wasn't a war of ideology, the NAZI's didn't want to take over the world, and the Japanese were merely misunderstood students of Zen. Give me a break. Your attitiude is why the USA hasn't WON a war since WW2 - we're defeated before we even begin. The more people that buy into your pacifistic logic, the faster this nation will fall into the wayside of history. The fact of the matter is that this nation, many of it's people, and MOST of it's politicians see war as a game, something to make money off of, something to increase the power of their political party, or something that can't last more than a couple of years and can't generate too many body bags. They have lost the prime rationale for going to war, and THAT is too ensure that this nation and our friends are not threatened, subjugated, or destroyed when we have the capability to respond and talk hasn't worked. IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT! When we DO go to war, it should be viscious, violent, total, and target eveyone and everything that supports the enemy we are trying to destroy. No legal advisors, not rules of engagement, no endless negotiations, no bribes, payoffs, or puppet regimes, no border sanctuaries, no nation building - at least while the enemy IS a nation and NO apologies etc. THEN we might get back to being able to remove butchers and despots within a 4 years period and keep our country safe, militarily AND economically instead of getting our men and women killed for over a decade. Enough said.
Our biggest blunder was in allowing the Washington Establishment and their Elite financial supporters to take control of our government.
If you think unemployment is bad now, wait untill they approve the 'Trans-Pacific Partnership'! Since 2001 more than fifty-six thousand (56,000) manufacturing facilities have been shut down. That number may double or triple due to this new (fair/free trade) legislation.
We need a total financial collapse, followed by a dose of a hyper-inflationary Depression, then we can start all over again with a clean slate...hopefully, no Democrats or Republicans.
If the ONE BILLION DOLLARS promised to Karzai has not been sent take the money and get out of there. Spend the money to get the Paki nukes and then let Pakistan and Afghanistan fight it out. I really think we should be focusing our efforts toward clean energy offshore drilling and parts of Africa that have not been taken over by Muslims and would welcome development and security. These Muslims don't want anything but money from the US and they do not want to do anything that would help the US. These are drug dealers not people who can ever be negotiated with or trusted.
Sad fact of war...colateral damage. Either Karzai wants our protection and a secure future for his tenure or he doesnt. People and soldiers die.
I have no idea of the back door policies between NATO and Aphghanistan and wouldnt even render a quess but war is what it is. If staying in power is goal number one for Karzai then military operations will contiue and colateral damage will continue.
OMG! It was a NATO strike so, yea, blame the USA.
They want the whole cake to eat for themselves!
This tax payer is tired of this S**T!!!
bfitz...your comment :Do you know what Karzai's family did before we sent troops? They RAN the opium trade in Afghanistan. Guess it comes as a great surprise to President Buttwheat that Karzai is a crook.
OMG...I had to pick myself up off the floor after 5 minutes of histerical laughing.....Love It!!!
I have a great idea, lets not call these "CIVILIAN CASUALTIES", civilian anymore, from the time the "pact" was signed, all "casualties" henceforth will be considered "ENEMY FATALITIES"!!!
Hello? The pact is meaningless anyway. Karzai insults the U.S., and when we remind him we're leaving, he makes nice. We need to leave, and burn all the opium fields on the way out.
I do believe they are working on developing a strain of Poppy that will degenerate their opium fields. That will be the end of that problem. all they'll have to do is drop the seeds from the sky. and let the wind carry the new pollen to destroy the next generation.
We need to cut out the economic part of this agreement, We have our own money problems, we blow it up then we build new. and the vets can't get help, but these people do. this has been happening in every war.
Anyone who has been to Afghanistan knows the "pact" is meaningless, as is the entire "war". Behind the scenes, the US is trying to pay off the Taliban. The Afghanistan, portrayed to the west as a nation, does not exist. It is a valley to valley, tribal hodge-podge best left alone to their own devices. The US and NATO cannot fix this and are looking more and more foolish in their efforts to do so.
We are finding evidence and is being reported Afghan President Hamid Karkai conspires and works in cooperation with Pakistani military agents to arrange "political leverage", civilian deaths the sacrificed cannon fodder . . . .
"Strategic Partnership Agreement spells out the U.S. relationship with Afghanistan beyond 2014, covering security, economics and governance"
This agreement is a joke. For their lootings, dances and killings, we have pay from our tax monies.
This is what happens when you take over someone else's civil war. Other than hunting down al- Qaida, our only military personnel role in Afghanistan should be that of military advisers and trainers. Train and supply the Afghan's to carry out their own night time raids and conduct their own close air support. Give them their own mine sweepers and let them clear their own roads of IEDs. Until they learn, they will just have to suffer the Taliban. If civilians get killed, then it is the Afghans who will have to answer to their government and their people, either for not protecting them properly or else for any collateral damage. I have been saying this for many years now, but still no one wants to listen. - RC
(Vietnam should have taught us this a LONG TIME AGO. People who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. That is probably never more true than in Afghanistan, whose history in this regard goes back a very long way.) - RC
(If I may paraphrase Kissinger, " 'Vietnam is a dagger poised at the heart of the Pacific Ocean.' ") - RC
Karzai is a criminal involved in the drug trade. The sooner we get out of this stone age country the better off America will be. This business about civilians killed by NATO is a joke as most of these people are involved either in the drug trade or with the Taliban.
