Dalai Lama to give $1.7 million prize to a mystery beneficiary

The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader, is to be awarded a $1.7 million prize – then instantly give it away.

Tenzin Gyatso, 76, the 14th Dalai Lama, will be presented with the Templeton Prize – the world's largest - at a ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London on Monday.

The Tibetan monk, believed by his followers to be the reincarnation of an ancient Buddhist leader, has not yet identified the recipient of the prize money.

China boosts security in Tibet following protests

Visiting St Paul’s for the first time, will receive the prize from Dr John M. Templeton, Jr, president and chairman of the John Templeton Foundation and son of the late prize founder.

Q&A: The Dalai Lama, Tibet and China

Guests at the ceremony, to be broadcast live on the internet on the organization’s website, will include the British actress Joanna Lumley.

Is Dalai Lama a god or a man? Perhaps we should see more about the complexity of politics involving around this man. Yes, this is a video made by the Chinese government. But it does provide insights and another perspective of the situation.

god or man? really? that old saw? if ever there was mole for the chinese government its you. HHDL has said a million times he is not god. The whole "god=man" label was first bestowed by western outside missionaries (catholic priests) who could/would not understand the bodhisattava concept [more like catholic saints whose lives are supposed to inspire a model of good behavior] and it was picked up by the Chinese to use as propaganda in the west since they know most xtians would abhor the idea of any claiming to be god.

He has also resigned as political leader of the Tibetan government in exile and democratic elections were held for president and representatives.

For a video based in REALITY - Kundun is a 1997 epic biographical film written by Melissa Mathison and directed by Martin Scorsese. It is based on the life and writings of the 14th Dalai Lama, the exiled political and spiritual leader of Tibet. Tenzin Thuthob Tsarong, a grand nephew of the Dalai Lama, stars as the adult Dalai Lama.

Research Mao's comments on the Buddhist religion. Mao makes clear his view that "religion is poison" and that the Tibetans are "poisoned and inferior" because of it... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kundun

Research the Chinese actions concerning; Unghur Muslims, Tibet Buddhist, Chinese Christians, non-Han Chinese, etc, etc...

If you are Han, have white skin, speak/write Mandarin, etc. You can succeed in China and many other Asian countries. If not, you are only slave labor to be exploited, even in your own home country...

From someone who has lived & traveled in Asia for almost a decade. And have studied Tibet and the Dalai Lama, sense the early 1960's...

It is quite unlikely that you can't speak/write mandarin (national language) in your own country.

Actually, Mandarin is not spoken by all Chinese people.

Why would anyone want to be a pawn in the hands of others?

If he gave me the money I'd be ashamed to keep it for myself. There would be a village in Africa that would be getting plumbing, clean water, farming and manufacturing consultants......

I see the Chinese trolls are out in force today. They tend to spread lies about His Holiness, and never do address historical fact or their own blind obedience to authoritarians, which His Holiness has never been. Been swatting them for a long time on these boards, but like cockroaches, they just scurry away until the next time the light is turned on. You can spot them through their lack of a sense of humor or perspective. Most Chinese troll arguments are falsehoods linked to assertions of how things used to be, but they'll never own up that Chairman Mao also presided over serfdoms and widespread poverty and ignorance. Those were pandemic globally at the time, but we now live in a different era. There is no "Dalai Lama clique." But he is loved globally by millions for his teachings around nonviolence and living in ways that lessen suffering.
