The parents of slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin held a public meeting in England Friday to highlight the dangers of “profiling” people by the color of their skin or outward appearance.
Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton took to a stage at the University of London with the mother of a black British teenager, Stephen Lawrence, who was murdered in a racist attack in Eltham, South London, in 1993.
Doreen Lawrence campaigned for years to get justice for her son, and two men, Gary Dobson, 36, and David Norris, 35, were only found guilty of Stephen’s murder in January. Three other suspects remain at large.
Trayvon Martin, 17, who was unarmed and walking back to the home of his father’s fiancée, was shot dead by George Zimmerman, 28, in a gated community in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26.
Zimmerman saw the teenager, called 911 and began following him. Zimmerman claims Martin attacked him and he shot in self-defense, citing Florida's "stand your ground" law. Zimmerman was not charged for more than six weeks, sparking protests across the U.S. and also in London, and is now awaiting trial for second-degree murder.

With tears in her eyes, Fulton told an audience of journalists, activists, students and others, “I should not be looked at differently because of the color of my skin.”
“Although it’s a sad moment for us to be here, it warms my heart to know there are other people who are supporting us,” she said.
“I say to you today … just stand up, stand up and be heard. Don’t let this happen to another one of our children,” Fulton added.
“Until you have lost a child, it’s very difficult for you to understand how we feel, and the hurt and the pain that we have," she said.
Fulton also released a Mother's Day video appeal on YouTube and the Justice for Trayvon Martin Foundation's website Friday for people across the United States to campaign for "stand your ground" laws to be re-examined.
She said she would say a prayer on Mother's Day for other mothers who had lost their children to "senseless gun violence."
May 11: Two mothers, separated by space and time, but linked by a similar loss, met today to share their sadness and their stories of battles against injustice. Doreen Lawrence lost her son to a racist gang in London, while Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin, lost her son to a shooting in Florida. ITV's Geraint Vincent reports.
"Nobody can bring our children back, but it would bring us comfort if we can help spare other mothers the pain that we will feel on Mother's Day and every day for the rest of our lives," Fulton said.
At the meeting in London, Tracy Martin said that Doreen Lawrence was “an inspiration" to their fight for justice.
“We can stand together on common ground … the loss of children. It certainly is a unique fraternity to be in, one that we didn’t choose to be in,” he said. “She [Lawrence] is proving you can turn tragedy into something positive… there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
He said profiling was “not just an issue of black and white.”
“It’s a profiling issue in general, profiling of all sorts,” he said.
After the public meeting, a vigil was held just outside Downing Street, home to the British prime minister's official residence.
Trayvon's parents spoke briefly and then stood with the crowd of about 100, who chanted "I am Trayvon Martin" and "No justice, no peace."

The meeting was organized by the Million Hoodies Movement for Justice, JusticeTM.org, a website set up after Trayvon’s murder, and Occupy London.
“You cannot be afraid to leave home, you cannot be afraid to walk down the street and feel someone is going to do something to you. You have to be comfortable in your surroundings,” Tracy Martin said.
Sanford, Florida, the town at the center of the Trayvon Martin controversy, has named a new interim police chief, even as the prior chief remains on the payroll. The Grio's Joy-Ann Reid and msnbc's Thomas Roberts discuss.
He added that more needed to be done to teach people how to resolve conflict peacefully.
Ben Crump, a lawyer representing the family, said that the support for Trayvon’s family in England showed the case was an “international issue” and “one of human rights, not just profiling.”
The family of Trayvon Martin says the neighborhood watch captain who shot and killed the Florida team intentionally misled the judge who set his bail by failing to disclose that he had received online donations for a legal defense fund. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.
It was a reminder to “the local people who so conveniently went to sweep the death of a young black child under the rug” that “every life is important, every life matters.”

“Trayvon was 17, Stephen was 18, they had so much life ahead of them,” Crump said. “These children did not deserve this tragic, untimely end to their lives.”
Zita Holbourne, of British campaign group Black Activists Rising Against Cuts, said there had been cases where people had died in police custody and at the hands of the state in the U.K. and “they’ve been predominantly black.”
“We’re not seeing the justice that we should see,” she said. “What we are seeing is family upon family having to set up campaigns to fight for justice.”
“I think it’s important to come together from across the globe to fight injustice and racism.”

When the incident first happened I had much sympathy for the decedent and his family. Still have sorrow for the decedent, but the family has turned this into a racial thing and they can go to blazes the lousy publicity hounds.
Of course, our nation has a massive double standard. We can't really be considered a nation, united thanks to hypocrites like this. Makes you wonder what MLK would have thought, because he didn't preach this.
Over and over, Trayvon's mother has said, "This is NOT a black or white thing....This is a right or wrong thing."
Yeah, but I am still waiting for them to denounce the bounty placed by NBPP, stand up for the white people that were beat/mutilated/raped/killed in retaliation of this, or for any child that is murdered. Where are they on the 14 year old girl, and her mother who were killed, and the two younger girls kidnapped by a crazy psycho? Fortunately, fate ended that one quickly.

No defendant in America should ever be the subject of public threats. We have a good system of justice where the jury will decide the case in a court of law.

I think legislators need to reexamine the the law that allows CONCEALED GUNS. If the gated community members knew that one of their watch volunteers had a gun because he carried it openly in a holster, they probably would have told him not to carry it when volunteering. If Trayvon had been able to see it in a holster at Zimmerman's side, Trayvon probably would not have taken part in even a VERBAL altercation.
It's about "profiling"....GZ sought out Trayvon BECAUSE he was BLACK...he said so himself! Trayvon was doing nothing criminal, yet he was followed because he was black!

I couldn't agree more. How are they hoping to get "justice" for Trayvon in London?? They've parlayed their son's death into a Warholian 15 minutes. It doesn't mean Zimmerman is guilty or innocent, it just means that the parents have sadly devolved into a reality tv script.

You're right Sir Mason, he was still a future criminal when Zimmerman did the world a favor by plugging him.... Little acknowledged, yet widely accessible fact, blacks cause 75% of all crime in this country, yet are only 13% of the population. You're right, profiling serves no purpose....

If there were breakins by white kids G would have been more aware of strangers of that nationality, however, the breakins were done by black kids and so he would be more aware of someone who he didn't know in his gated community who was black. It does NOT mean he went after him as a racist. Read all the facts and then you will actually see what the truth of the matter is in this regards. You are beating a dead old horse by repeating yourself.

The parents are exploiting Trayvon Martin's murder. What a shame. Do they grieve for him?--Are they getting paid to take this all over the World--who's paying for this.
Why can't parents stay at home, mourn the death of their treasured son or child. Most parents could not function after a disgusting death like this.
If it were my son, I would be too shocked, and immobilized to go traipsing to other countries for a "Cause"..

I don't know if GZ is in fact a racist, it became a "race issue" when the police failed to do a thorough investigation, and just "assumed" Trayvon was guilty BECAUSE he was black!
Bottom line, GZ did profile Trayvon as a "black teen" and even though Trayvon was doing NOTHING wrong, he was MURDERED!
This is not about the dead guy anymore..all can see its about $$$$$$..always was to them I saw that from the start. They weren't even together when it happen like they care.

Really... you need to think about this... if a neighbor came to you and said be careful because a black kid has been seen breaking into your neighbour's home and you saw a black kid you didn't know in the area would you say it can't be him or would you watch to see what he is going to do? If you are like any other normal person you would watch to see what he is up to, that is different from the profiling you are claiming happened.
It became a race issue when it was falsely reported as a race issue by those with an agenda and now those with that agenda have done the damage to the case, twisting the truth to get it looked at as a race issue and they are now nowhere to be found. You have to look at all media stories about this and really honestly open up your mind that you might just be wrong about this one fact and stop publishing this nonsense over and over again.
As I said previously you are sounding neurotic in sticking to this point. In fact, Mark NaJame? (not sure of the spelling) who is a correspondent now for CNN and is covering this case was on a show saying he thought about the race issue as well and it was not until he looked into it further that now even he agrees that it has nothing to do with race. He dug deep into GZ family history as well as what GZ QUIETLY did to help mentor black kids.
Do I think things could have been handled differently on the parts of both parties involved? Absolutely! But in making my decisions I will look at all the facts and make a determination based on that... not on slanderous stories put out there to fit in with someone else's agenda. When you follow blindly on a topic that seems to have been disproved then I have to wonder if you have issues with OCD. For some reason you WANT to believe the worst and won't open your mind to anything else. It is a shame because for the most part people would do that for you.

Trayvon Martin was an"A" and "B" student. he wa a good kid as said by two of his coaches, hie english teacher and his fellow students. Trayvon Martin wanted to be an airline pilot.
that is not what the department of justice, bureau of justice statistics states. What the statistics do talk about is the massive inequality of arrests (75% of arrests of african americans from 17% of criminal stops , the massive disparate justice in courts (if a caucasian and an african american go to court for the same thing the african american on average will get more severe charges, more charges), will get a harsher sentence,and will serve more time. this is one of the ways that african americans are taken out of hte work force to challenge caucasians. this disrupts black families. it criminalizes black men and women unfairly.

police and the federal law enforcement agancies behavioral profiling offices are staffed with psychologists and psychiatrists for this purpose. it is not "there have been black kids seen here and are suspected of being the purpitrators of non violent crimes". there was no reason for deadly force. the crimes were all property, none were violent. even police aren't authorized to shoot at non threatening suspects.
george zimmerman said he was on neighborhood watch duty. national and local neighborhood watch guidelines state that a person on neighborhood watch should not be armed. they further state that hey are there ro watch and record. they are told they are not to endanger themselves and confront the suspected offender. george zimmerman broke every neighborhood watch rule he could in his zeal to become some kind of demented "hero". taryvon martin was walking on a sidewalk talking on the phone and holding skittles and a arizona iced tea. he should have been secure in his 4th amendemnt right to be secure in his person. you would be outraged if black people started following you based on the fact that some caucasian person committed a crime.
I lost all respect for this family the minute they issued that picture showing Trayvon at age 12 instead of a current photo. Media manipulation 101. These people had an agenda almost from the very start.

It was on the local Miami news this morning, they were talking about the release of evidence, that they expect on Monday, and they said the FBI and DOJ were re-interviewing people in the neighborhood, and that they were still considering "hate crime" charges!
O'Mara dosen't want the public to see the Discovery evidence, until he has time to react.
Jo-An-4354969, your statements are just pure contempt, you have no desire to see anything but the only truth that is within your own head, you have no desire to see anything other than Mr. Zimmerman's guilt, even if facts say otherwise. I am sorry you suffer from "white guilt" and feel that all black americans are victims, no matter the circumstances. Being blind to facts or the simple truth doesn't honor Trayvon's life or death and his parents cashing in on his death won't allow him to rest in peace either, if justice isn't served, if the truth isn't brought to the ears and eyes and Zimmerman isn't allowed a fair trail, then all of the lives given for the sake of freedom, for the sake of equality and for the sake of justice would have been in vain.

O'Mara doesn't have to let the public see any discovery evidence until he does what is best for his client.... I think he is a very smart attorney for how he is handling this case. He would not be a good attorney if he didn't look out for his client's best outcome. We don't know the nature of the things he wants redacted and it may just be personal stuff about his client's family but to insinuate that he is being sneaky for doing so just shows again how you certainly would not qualify to be on that jury or any other as you prejudge and even when the true facts come out you want to stick to lies.
They are trying to take a negative situation and spread awareness throughout the world. Profiling is a bad thing. Understand this family is heartbroken over their lost. And if this is what helps them heal then I am all for it. Losing a loved one is hard no matter how they leave this world. Have a little compassion. Maybe someone sponsored them and paid for the trip. And if not is is none of anyone business how expensive a trip to London is. I don't recall them asking anyone to help them with expenses. This trip took nothing from me.

Have you ever had a child murdered?, or a child die. The bond is so strong, that Trayvon was a part of their natural being.
It would be normal if it were a year from now, or later, when the grieving process was possibly easing. No parent ever gets over having a child who dies. Like they say, "The parent dies first, it is not normal for a child to die before a parent".
There is no compassion knowing Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson are involved. They are being used. No you did not hear about anyone giving them money for this trip to London. Who's idea was it[---why did the Martin's choose London?--
Apparently, there is no compassion by the parents. They see lots of money; and don't know they are being blackmailed by the 2 gangsters. What a shame. Like I said before, when the parents wake up, they are going to sue the H out of the 2 for exploiting their son and their lives.
Maybe if they invested as much time into their parenting, their son would still be alive!
I think there will be plenty of time to see if 'justice' is served when we hear all of the evidence presented at the trial of Zimmerman.
Until then, this is just more 'fanning the flames' of racial animosity.
MSN seems to have every single item on this case but can't come up with any photos of Trayvon after puberty years ago or his sparkling school records or the Miami police catching him with stolen goods and tools after a house burglary. It will in court and Trayvon will be shown for what he really was and it won't be the son Obama might have had.
The goods were not reported stolen. At least he didn't attack a police officers who was trying to arrest his friend like George Zimmerman. At least he didn't beat up his girlfriend and had to attended anger management classes like George Zimmerman. Now go back and put that pillow case over your head. I agree valtin. While I'm not saying he should be killed, I do think he was in that neighborhood up to no good.
@MCR: Kinda hard for a person to report stolen goods when they are in class, and he JUST got done stealing them. Zimmerman has his issues, but at least he did receive help, at least for his anger issue. In a court of law, a person's past mistakes are not allowed to be brought up. So let justice work its magic please, he may of had a past, but that doesn't dictate that he DID this intentionally.

Zimmerman had a mindset that did not allow him to slow down and let the police handle the situation. Zimmerman was overzealous and "ready to roll !" ......Very inept.
I think it will come out in court that most of the crimes committed in that gated community were not committed by whites.
It's hilarious how whenever faced with a controversy which does not appeal to their sense of social vanity, liberals just throw out terms like 'racist', or 'bigot', or simply make an indirect reference to the KKK, and expect the conversation to be over.
There was a time when liberal meant intellectually liberated. Today, it's just a term which describes people who prefer shortcuts in their thinking. Disagree with one, and you'll be a racist, a redneck, a tea-bagger, or whatever other term is popular that week.

One would be lead to think that the Martins were the first parents ever to lose a son in a horrible way. It doesn't matter what color you are - the loss of a child, or any loved one, is a loss. But you don't see ordinary parents carrying on as they have. I think their behavior is what leads to the moral downfall of society and keeps racism alive in the world. They are nothing more than a shameful spectacle. IMO - Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson should be ashamed of themselves for the instigation they have created. This family couldn't have done it alone. They claim to be men of God? Yet God would refer to them as hypocrites. Nothing they do resembles anything God-like. It was less helpful that the President felt his need to speak out by stating that if he had a son - he would look like Trayvon. WHAT exactly does that mean?
Zimmerman had no obligation to die that night. He shot a young man who was beating him to death so that he could survive himself. If Martin had kept going home, he would still be alive. All that would have happened is that Zimmerman would have given the address to the police and they probably would have asked to have a look around. Of course, if Martin had stolen goods, he wouldn't want that.
Wild speculation in your last sentence, Publius. I might as well counter with a speculation---Maybe, Trayvon did not want to lead the potential criminal, who was following him, back to his home where such a follower could also endanger the 14 year old who was waiting for Trayvon at home.

wheres your proof? cite your source, because a eye witness say Trayvon was attacking George Zimmerman so he acted in self defense. If you have proof that the eye witness is wrong, then cite it.

Who is stretching things? I've seen your posts, with all their key "all cap words". You sound like you're trying to convince yourself because none of your posts on this case are based on anything other than your own biased opinion. All Trayvon had to do hit Zimmerman once and that was the beginning of what could have become a deadly beating. People with your kind of logic want someone to wait until their either blacking out or their skull is split before they defend themselves. Kind of like lawyers that defend a burglar that cut himself on a window he broke.
What do you dispute? 35 mins? Or the fact that he wasn't being " beaten"? It's widely known that the video in the police station was taken 35 after the gun shot! And, any person with a drop of common sense, KNOWS GZ would have needed hospital care if he was really hurt! He was cuffed 1.5 mins after firing the shot (it's in police report), so how did he look so clean in video? Use your critical thinking skills here boys!
I don't doubt GZ was in a fight, just not like you are trying to portray!

It's not so wild of speculation as you claim. It has already been pointed out that Martin had items that did not belong to him (and were believed stolen) in his locker. It is not unreasonable to speculate that he might also have stolen items in his room. The hypothesis serves to explain Martin's actions. Your hypothesis would predict that Martin should call the police rather than attack Zimmerman.

Please get with the times, everyone has seen these photos and video enhancements that show the injuries, which is why some in the Martin camp have back off or out right fled from this story, they all know GZ was assaulted by TM and the shooting was 100% self defense.
As far as the "stolen items" jewelry was found at school in a zip lock bag along with a large screw driver in his back pack which was searched because they thought he was spray painting graffiti and they were looking for paint cans. He was not charge at that time it was determined that lockers had been broken into and items taken, Trayvon said it wasn't his he was just holding it for someone else, ya right.
Not even a mention in London's big newspaper the Telegraph.
I believe England has the same problem with crime. Just a few weeks ago, one of the Governors of London was mugged at 6:00 p.m. walking through downtown London to his car. He is an older Caucasian gentlemen, and was attacked (hit and robbed) and it was such a severe mugging that he had to have surgery the next day for damage to his eye, and unfortunately lost the eye due to the damage from the attack. Description of the perp? Black wearing a hoodie. Yes, he was caught last week.
Jody, what a terrible story. As I said in post #7, England is getting pretty messed up too. Same problems now as us. We need to start speaking up like they do.

I think what I started to get a feeling about a little while ago. The family are enjoying their new found fame. And who are they to go over to England like ambassadors? They dug up a case from 1993? What about the London riots last summer that were predominantly caused by blacks? Poor England. You let too many people in and now your whole country is either Arab or black African. You constantly see black women with English accents on the tele anymore (or music, movies).
This article isn't very accurate - it was a case of mistaken identity on the part of both Zimmerman and Martin - each believing the other to be a predator of sorts. Black teenagers had terrorized the neighborhood and pit bulls had been running free without leases in the neighborhood as well. The police told Zimmerman he needed a gun to deal with the dogs. Unfortunately he got into a habit of carrying it instead of a stun gun when he went on his nightly neighborhood watch patrols.

Instead of always blaming "Whitey", how about doing something for the black youth that gives them pride. There are many powerful Black businessmen and woman and celebrities. What are they doing for their people?
You know I have always thought about that, while some of the famous black athletes do set up intercity youth camps and whatnot, and make an admirable attempt to help, it seems like a LOT of African American's who find success in life not only do not do anything to try and actively improve the conditions from which they came from, but many in fact continue to make money by exploiting it.
Particularly rappers who insist on contining to make music about gang shootings, disrepecting women's bodies, talking about how they still are "hood," how all the money hasn't "changed them," carry around guns, sing about drug dealing and using, threaten eachother, call the few who do try and make a difference "sell outs," and on and on. And all the while that they are claiming to make music because they "relate to the black man's condition" they are making millions of dollars, buying mansions and yachts, riding in private jets, racking up enormous bar taps, throwing huge parties, doing drugs, traveling the world. They do not relate to the black man's "condition," if they really cared about where they came from they would, I think, try to do something, anything, beneficial with the money and voice they have found with their fame.
Instead you end up with people like Mike Tyson, who nationally encourage/endorse someone to "put a bullet" in Zimmerman, when Mr. Tyson himself was in prison not that long ago for raping someone!
Will they be staying for the Olympics? I seriously think they just enjoy the attention. It's sad the young man was killed, but at this point the parents aren't helping the situation.

I don't even understand the meaning of racism anymore, but know if I'm white, I stand no chance against a black person for many positions. I was not born in this country, but used to get picked on by both whites and blacks. For goodness sake, why are the parents in London and why are they together? Wasn't the son visiting his father when this happened? Hint - They were not together then but are now?
