Three decades ago, Bob Geldof and U2's Bono helped draw the world's attention to the famine in Africa. Now, back in Ethiopia, Geldof is still fighting to shed light on the suffering and claims that rich nations are not honoring their pledges to help. ITV's Rohit Kachroo reports.
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – Ahead of this week's G8 summit at Camp David, Maryland, the musician and global poverty campaigner Bob Geldof has returned to Ethiopia to highlight the issue of famine and climate change – 28 years after his charity appeals first made world headlines.
The singer said G8 leaders have failed to adhere to aid targets set at the Gleneagles summit in 2005.
The G8 "is capable of contributing to end" poverty, he said.
He also acknowledged that people may have grown tired of his campaigning, but said even basic projects such as the irrigation ditch he was inspecting, saved lives. "I know people are like...'Oh, Geldof, give it a break' but the facts is these people [here] are not dead."
Geldof was one of the key figures behind the Band Aid fundraising music project, launched in 1984 after Ethiopia suffered a devastating famine.

Sure, Countries, governments, non profit groups, companies, corporations, and individuals can do anything. The real question is always, "What is in it for them?" No one does anything for nothing! What happens most is changing the way to count things. The number of homeless veterans is dropping, in this country, cause the departments, agencies, and non profits lie about the numbers. The actual soldiers that are homeless is growing and at an alarming rate!
Odds are these veterans would be homeless, even if they didn't serve in the military. The economy means nothing, Same s-x marriage will save the country!!!!!
If they were smart they would sign up for the GI-Bill while in the service and get an education while making the transition back to civilian life. That's 4 yrs of income.
Finding employment afterwards tends to be the more difficult part.
What Geldof didn't say is that the UN is going to end poverty by killing all the poor people.
For a guy who says he cares so much about people, he sure didn't care about the parents and family of Michael Hutchence, the late lead singer of INXS, whose daughter he convinced the UK authorities he should adopt when her mother passed away and then with all his money never allowed her to travel to Australia to see her real family except one time, even when Hutchence's mother was dying.
He is a jerk.
Other than making babies and contributing to poverty, what are these people doing to help themselves?
The governments of these countries are what keeps their people in poverty. As a person who fought his way out of poverty I can say that thanks to the U.S. economic system and the grace of God, I am where I am today. Most other countries' systems are set up to allow only the ruling class economic opportunities.
Yep lets give money to corrupt governments, I'm sure they will help the poor people (sarcasm)
I think we ought to end poverty in our own country first, then maybe, just maybe help other countries out. Besides, any aid in money or food always ends up in the hands of polititians or warlords. Anyhow, I don't like Mondays or Bob Geldorf.
Sincerely,

Africa's problem is Africa.. the cradle of civilization, yet still stuck living in dirt. Still stuck pursuing millenia old tribal conflicts and squabbling over UN handouts. what is one of the most abundant areas of natural resources on the planet is worthless
The only place I am interested in ending poverty is in the USA!!!! I could care less about poverty elsewhere in the world especially 3rd world under-devloped countries Ethopia!!!! Charity Begins at HOME!!!!!
Another performer and 'celebrity wannabe' decides he knows more than all the politicians in the world. Maybe he can run for president of Venezuela when Hugo Chavez dies. The G8 summit can't even clean out its own pants, much less end poverty.
Charity begins at home and those that try to help themselves should be helped first, we shouldn't be helping out the crack whores nor their kids. Screw the under-developed nations, they've had the same opportunities as the rest of the planet. And if they'd stop their fueds, and stop breeding like rats maybe food wouldn't be that difficult to come by. I have no problem letting third world nations fend for themselves may the strong survive. And instead of the WH occupier taking the cash from the liberal asses in Holloywood for his upcoming failed reelection he should have them send it to the poor before he ever commits one cent of our tax dollars
Poverty will never end because its a value judgement laden, elastic term of proportion. What is poverty? Is it the pot bellied starving child, with glassy eyes and flies crawling in and out of his mouth in, or the down trodden US citizen who only has one car and one old TV, is 350 lbs and has a free scooter to haul themselves around the grocery store? Poverty is a word used by people who think they have better means of allocating resources than other people. They are typically people who have done very little actual labor other than to think how other people's labor needs to be confiscated and reallocated. They invert the fact that they have had it pretty good and have had their needs and wants satiated while doing very little, so they think that's the way it is with everybody. Geldof can take his noblesse oblige and stick it. I don't have a problem with PERSONAL involvement in the practice of sacrifice, it is when they rely on the illusion of Statism as the function of reallocation that they prove themselves to be imbeciles. It is Statism that CAUSES poverty to expand rather than contract.
What a dream, if only it were as simple as throwing money at it, all would be cured.
Wait, there is no poverty in the US as we can throw lots of money at it.
WRONG WRONG WRONG
Yes we can provide food, so they don't starve, but how do we educate them to get jobs to be self sufficient, how do we provide health insurance for them.
This is a very complex problem and it will probably not get solved in my kids lifetime. Suppose we get a family out of "poverty" but a parent goes on a binge (booze or drugs) all the money is gone, job is gone, back in poverty for the family.
As i said there is no fast easy answer, but LETS try and do it in the US First, that way we have a model to roll out else where
Wrong headline MSNBC it was Bob Geldof Boomtown Rats and Midge Ure of Ultravox, who first raised the awareness of the starving in Africa.
Bono was the Irish diplomat to the US who managed to actually channel the most generous nation on earth (The USA) to act.
I dare say that they all contributed from their vast wealth as well, but they are not in the working class bracket anymore even if the all originated there.
Sure we need to look after people at home in the US but lets not be so insular as to refuse to see with our eyes and act through our hearts.
God Bless All
A non American by the way!
Bubblegum!
Africa has sucked up about one trillion dollars in the past 50 years. Helping others feels good, but causes them to become dependent on us. We land with tons of wheat and corn, immediately wiping out all the indigenous wheat and corn farmers. Once the rains com back, we leave and...
We are very busy right now depleting our food supply, polluting our fresh water, and poisoning the atmosphere. We can't be bothered with something as puny as poverty. Go away Geldof.
Ethiopia has been starving for years...when will they just stop reproducing??? its a sin to bring children into a world like that ...whatever we or anyone has been doing to raise money or give them food for atleast the last 35 years has done nothing to fix the problem...they need to take responsibility for themselves and keep thier damn pants on!
There will ALWAYS be hunger in the world. We can't end hunger......no one can. It's completely disingenuous to keep trying to make that claim.
We just need to GIVE TIL IT HURTS!It'll all be better then
All the west has to do is use all of our resources to save the lives of these people so they can get strong enough to have more kids who need saved.Ah,what the hell, just bring them all here. We're already turning the US into a third world country.
How many billions of dollars has the U.S. poured into Africa to no avail? These people can't seem to help themselves and us pouring billions of dollars into this pit hasn't solved the problem. We've spent money on education, health care, agriculture, water supplies, etc. while our own infrastructure is crumbling here at home.
Given the economic situation we're in, we need to cut back dramatically on foreign aid. Especially since Obama is borrowing 40 cents of every dollar we're spending now. It is unsustainable. We won't be able to help anyone in the future if we don't get our own fiscal affairs in order. A healthy America is a better asset to the world's poor than a broke America.
Right Right
I can tell their are a lot of very loving and carrying people here in this thread. Very civilized indeed.
My people had enough sense to leave Africa hundreds of thousands of years ago, bang neanderthals, and make the modern world. These people sat around and screwed their way to oblivion. No curiosity I guess
Billions have been poured into these countries with most of the food stolen by warlords or criminals. Any money we spend now is money borrowed, we can't afford to borrow money to give to thieves. Like the billions we spent on food and oil to keep North Korea peaceful and all it did was feed their military while their people continued to starve.
You cannot end poverty,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
To end poverty, slimeballs, lazy worthless losers the world over would have to get off their collective asses and go to work. They won't even do that in modern 1st world countries, they will get high, sit in parks and bang garbage can lids demanding you give them money, houses, food, medical and fund their lazy worthless lives.
You can educate them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,then they will blame you for not hiring them to 100K a year jobs.
You can feed them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and they will demand more and better quality food and more flavors to choose from.
You can house them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and they will destroy the homes, crap on the walls, floors and ceiling then burn the place down and demand a new one.
You can give them free lifetime medical,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and they will abuse drugs, engage in risky sexual behavior, grow obese on the free food and smoke their bored days away.
You can buy them cell phones, lap tops and cars,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,they will use them to engage in crime, buy drugs or pimp.
Today in California,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,144,000 people pay 24% of all the states taxes. Those nasty 1%'rs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,meanwhile 24,000,000 are on welfare and not in the least bit interested in anything but taxing those 144K people for the last 40% of their income. They already pay 60% in taxes and to the blood sucking parasites of the world,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,that is not enough.
If you are tired of poverty,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,go find a job, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,then go to work every day and when you are tired of that job, find another one and keep going. Put the money you use for tatts, cable TV, rims, a grill, drugs, booze or abortions in the bank, instead. Move away from your loser friends and improve your lot in life.
Waiting for someone to make you rich,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,is stupid or it means you are "thinking like a democrat".
Poverty ends when people decide they want to end pvoverty,,,,,,,,,,,,,no one in the world ever paid idiots to stop being poor and accomplished a thing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,other than making themselves broke.
Yes, we can end hunger. The problem is corporate greed, thieves and corrupt governments do not want anybody except the wealthy and healthy to have access to these resources.
