An Israeli official on Thursday attacked the International Olympic Committee after it apparently refused to allow a minute's silence at the start of this year's games in memory of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches massacred by Palestinian militants in the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon had asked the IOC to commemorate those killed on the 40th anniversary of their deaths.
In his written response, IOC President Jacques Rogge did not specifically address the request of a minute's silence, The Associated Press reported.
Instead, he said he would personally attend the Israeli delegation's traditional tribute to the victims in London and pointed out that the IOC has officially paid tribute to the victims' memory before. "Please rest assured that, within the Olympic family, the memory of the victims of the terrible massacre in Munich in 1972 will never fade away," Rogge wrote.
'This tragedy is yours alone'
On Thursday Ayalon said the reply was "unacceptable as it rejects the central principles of global fraternity on which the Olympic ideal is supposed to rest," The Times of Israel reported.
“The terrorist murders of the Israeli athletes were not just an attack on people because of their nationality and religion; it was an attack on the Olympic Games and the international community,” he said.
“This rejection told us as Israelis that this tragedy is yours alone and not a tragedy within the family of nations," he added. "This is a very disappointing approach and we hope that this decision will be overturned so the international community as one can remember, reflect and learn the appropriate lesson from this dark stain on Olympic history.”
IOC spokesman Mark Adams told The Associated Press that the Olympic body takes the issue "very, very seriously," but felt that an event at the Guildhall venue in London was "the most appropriate way to pay tribute to the athletes during the games in London."

The 1972 Munich Olympics were the first games held in Germany since the 1936 edition in Berlin, and were meant to erase the images of the competition held under the Nazi regime.

But in the second week of the Munich Games, eight members of the Black September militant group penetrated the minimally secured Olympic Village and took Israeli team members hostage. A day later, all 11 were dead.
German police killed five of the eight assassins during a failed rescue attempt. The games were briefly suspended.
The 2005 Steven Spielberg movie Munich gives a fictionalized account of secret attempts by the Israeli government to track down and kill those it thought responsible for the killings.

With so much terrorism going on the Olympic Committee may feel intimidated. There must already be tremendous stress on the security as it is.
The Olympic Games Committee is not intimidated to say the least- it is the same spirit (not Olympic Spirit)that was relevant in Munich- at that time it was the same head honcho who partook in the Berlin Games 1936 and in Munich in 1972 (Averell Bundridge?)- who was a friend of the antiSemites on both occasions. Even after 40 years the Lonbdon Olympics Committee cannot offer one minute silence to commemorate the 11 Israeli athletes massacred. The olympic committee should be ashamed of itself for not honoring those MURDERED at the Munich games. Abdallah, the answer to your question is simple. If Israel didn't care about civilian casualties, ALL Palestinian civilians would be dead right now. Israel has the military capacity to completely wipe the Palestinian people out of the history books (note: not the RIGHT, just the POWER). The simple fact that the Palestinians are still there to fight is proof that Israel has gone to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties.

This time it did not have to be Israel. The 11 Israely ahtletes were all born in different countries. Any of those countries could have expressed desire to mourn their former citizens.
Geremny lost at least one policeman that day and suffered a blow to their pride, big enough to enspire them into creating GSG. They could've expressed desire to mourn thier losses.
I don't know why Israel is the only country to ask for a moment of silence, but I suspect it has somehting to do with fear.
It always comes back to Israel. Maybe the #2 recipient of American foreign aid, Israel should think of a moment of silence for the Americans killed on 9/11, the Armenians killed by the Turks and the Palestinians, Lebanese and Syrians "they" killed over the years. Christian graves in the Gaza Strip have been dug up. Anti-Christian graffiti has appeared, and Christian cemeteries and statues have been defaced. A Muslim mob in February 2002 attacked churches and Christian shops in Ramallah. The First Baptist Church of Bethlehem was firebombed on at least fourteen occasions, and the pastor, Naem Khoury, was shot. In Gaza in June 2007 a leader of the Baptist Church, one of the oldest in the area and which contains Gaza's only Christian library, was kidnapped and murdered.The Sagrada Familia school in Gaza was torched, and the nuns' building in the Convent of the Sisters of the Rosary in June 2007 was looted, and holy images and sacred books were burned.

The issue here is not Olympic Game competition itself, it is about israel pressuring the Olympic Committee to remember the death of 11 israeli to suit its own agenda.. By the same token, may be US government ought to be pressed to remember the death of 34 innocent US seamen, deliberately killed by the idf thugs.
It's a damned shame that Israel should have to go to the Olympic Committee with this request. The committee should have been savvy and compassionate enough to come up with a memorial remembrance on it's own.
